It’s a funny old world we live in. Let me give you an example.More years ago than I care to remember we slapped a set of adventure knobbies on Kawasaki’s then new W 650 and dispatched stunt man Stretch and shooter Osborne to a gravel forestry road near the office for a cover shoot which we loved, Kawasaki was not particularly happy with, and – from the feedback we got at the time – had most readers wondering what we were thinking…The idea – and yes, I know, that if you have to explain a photo with words you’re missing the point but bear with me here – was to re-create a true mid-capacity all-rounder, the kind of bike our fathers might have ridden in the late ‘50s and/or early to mid 1960s, on tarseal, gravel and the odd paper or fire-road.

TIMES PASTAt the time – and this was pre re-born Bonneville remember – the W 650 was the only retro-style mid-size twin on the market and – from memory – it handled well enough on gravel on its standard road tyres and positively brilliantly on the adventure knobs.The problem was…nobody else seemed to get what we were trying to do….which makes it all the more galling these days when every time I click on YouTube to check out the latest bike vids all I see are chopped up/down late model Triumph Scramblers or Bonnevilles fitted with – you guessed it – adventure knobbies. And if you don’t believe me, or you are way behind the times, check out www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgbXb1YYCIM.What’s happening, in a nutshell is that the latest generation of

bike buyers, is looking back rather than forward. In much the same way their forebears did immediately after World War 11.

BOBBER STYLE Then, as now, times – economically-speaking – were tight and pre-war or army surplus Indians and Harley-Davidsons were bought cheap then personalised in what we know now as the back-to-basics ‘Bobber’ style.It’s no secret that Harley-Davidson design guru Willie G based the renaissance of the ‘family business’ on the look and feel of these customised bikes. And, as I found out when talking recently to custom scene aficionado Chris Hunter (of which more next month) the pattern is being repeated.Not just in the United States either.

WHEELS & WAVESAt the recent Wheels and Waves gathering (a sort of Sweetwaters or Burning Man-type festival of all things, custom and café) in Biarritz, France, Chris reports spotting a who’s who of European industry design talent. What they are going to produce over the next three or four years is anyone’s guess. But the trends are there for all to see. Bikes are no longer all about speed. Nor technology. There’s also a strong social element to the new scene. And perhaps best of all the battle lines that have existed between pure road and pure off-road bikes for so long are finally being blurred, opening the way for, let’s see…how about a light, nimble all-rounder, one powered by a mid-size parallel twin engine, and with a distinct retro look… ■ gs-feeling. everywhere.
