PRESIDENTrsquoS REPORT

Firstly I must apologise that this Report will have to be a short one as I have been unable to attend any of the events so far during September due to other commitments and as I write this Report to have it ready in time for our Editor it is between returning from the Tractor Trek yesterday the Management Meeting this morning and tomorrow morning to Dubbo for three days of work At least things should return to some normality in October

If I can wander off the subject and away from cars for a moment I will provide a brief outline of the 2014 Camp Quality Tractor Trek 29 tractors departed the Orange Field Day site on Thursday morning 18 September on a three day journey to Forbes for the first night via a variety of back country roads The next morning we travelled to Canowindra via Eugowra and Gooloogong and on the Saturday returned from Canowindra to Borenore where the local community had a mini fair to welcome us back Each evening there was a community function in the town and where possible the families and children with cancer being supported by Camp Quality were present We also visited schools along the way much to the delight of the school children as they explored the tractors Camp Quality also had a puppet display the purpose being to explain to children all about cancer and its effects in a way that the children could understand Some Trek statistics distance travelled 325 Km (averaging about 22 kph) administration drivers marshals and support staff approximately 100 and money raised was $23200000

Anyway back to what it is all about our cars and activities I was unable to attend the mid-week outing to Cowra on Thursday 11 September as was the organiser Peter Harper but from reports I have received Peter Moras took over the reins and with some support from other members attending a wonderful day was had by all I suspect there will be a report elsewhere in the Newsletter

The bi-monthly Management Meeting was held on Sunday 21 September A number of items were on the agenda and Secretary Chris in his usual capable manner will have a preacutecis of these in this newsletter however I will mention following reviews of the information we had available and acting on information provided by Fair Trading the Committee could see no good reason to proceed with Public Liability Insurance

October starts off on Thursday 9 with the mid-week outing to the Tarana Hotel for lunch the details being published in the newsletter The newsletter will also provide details of other events occurring during the month In November the Rudge National Motorcycle Rally will be held in Bathurst this coinciding with the 100 th Anniversary of the first Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the old circuit at Kirconnell which incidentally was won by a Rudge Geoff Fry a keen classic motorcyclist and secretary of the organizing committee and a member of the ASCC has asked if we could display our cars on the Saturday of this event This would be a great opportunity to promote the Club Following on the next day those people who were fortunate enough to secure a spot on the Spring Tour will be leaving for the tour taking in the Riverina and Echuca areas

By the time the Newsletter is distributed the jet setting Weily and Gardoll families should be back on home soil and the Smedleyrsquos will also be home hopefully with some stories to tell

Until next month keep cool smooth roads and happy and safe motoring

September 21st Sunday ndash Summary of Decisions from Committee Meeting at the Bathurst

Charles Stammers reported the year to date had been very successful with a number of regular well attended monthly and mid-week outings to interesting venues Considering that the weather until now has not been congenial to outdoor type activities these events have generally been well patronized no doubt due to the interesting and varied venues chosen

Peter Harper reported that mid-week runs were continuing to be popular with members Those members who helped Peter with the recent run to the Cowra Prison Camp were congratulated and thanked for their efforts

Alan Mitchell tabled further information from the CMC and the Department of Fair Trading on Insurance requirements for Incorporated Associations After a short discussion the following motion was put

In light of the information in the letter from the Department of Fair Trading dated 2nd September 2014 stating that ldquothere is no

The most beautiful MG ever Most think it is and it can be the most reliable and enjoyable MGrsquos to drive too Built between1955 to 1962

Generally speaking when shopping for a sports car beauty is 60 and performance is 40 and everything else is irrelevant Thatrsquos

just as well because if the customers especially in America who flocked to buy the gorgeous new MGA had a peak under the skin they might have been surprised The massive separate chassis was antiquated enough but wooden floor boards This would have been the last volume production car to use floor boards A fair amount of wood still appeared in the body too as did aluminium

skins over steel frames all labour intensive and expensive to build and so equally to restore today Thankfully buyers who went beyond the stunning looks were equally captivated by the lively performance precise steering and nimble handling Though no ball of fire it is after all on the heavy side It is still lighter than the MGB and a well prepared MGA can more than hold its own in historic racing Around 100000 MGArsquos were sold during its 7 year production most of which went to America The timeline and changes in each model-

Has anyone noticed a nice set of wheels around the Orange area lately Hope to get a closer look in the near future

COEFFICIENT OF DRAG Slip sliding or reducing drag At 100 kph it is estimated that aerodynamic drag accounts for roughly 80 of the total road resistance encountered by a medium size car The resistance of air on an object is usually expressed as its Coefficient of Drag (CD) The lower the CD the more aerodynamically efficient the shape Consider a brick as an example it has a CD of approximately 21 The early history of motoring shows that car bodies were basically copies of horse drawn carriages so the drag factor was quite high The Model T Ford had a CD of 080 During the late 1930s some cars were improving the Volkswagen had a CD 51 The Chrysler Airflow which was marketed for its aerodynamic performance had a CD of 05 but failed to gain successful sales With lack of interest by American buyers most manufacturers gave up on real aerodynamics for example a Chevrolet Impala Coupe of the mid 1960s had a CD of 060 On the other hand in Europe the Citroen DS had a CD of 037 Designers have the task of making the modern car fuel efficient with the body shape being reasonably comfortable for entering and alighting together with engine design The latest model Mercedes -Benz CLA class for example has a CD of 022 so modern thinking and technology is working Problems can arise in the process of streamlining as the same volume of air is passing over the top as underneath the air underneath has a shorter distance to travel and will create lift Drivers of the E type Jaguar the Datsun 240 Z and some Ferraris have experienced the front end lifting and getting lighter in the steering due to the shape of the front guiding more air under the car Owners of Datsun 240 have been known to put an air dam across the front of their cars below the bumper area to redirect the airflow Air dams which became popular in the 1960s continue to be used to- day (Reported by John Donohoe)

Until next month keep cool smooth roads and happy and safe motoring

just as well because if the customers especially in America who flocked to buy the gorgeous new MGA had a peak under the skin they might have been surprised The massive separate chassis was antiquated enough but wooden floor boards This would have been the last volume production car to use floor boards A fair amount of wood still appeared in the body too as did aluminium

skins over steel frames all labour intensive and expensive to build and so equally to restore today Thankfully buyers who went beyond the stunning looks were equally captivated by the lively performance precise steering and nimble handling Though no ball of fire it is after all on the heavy side It is still lighter than the MGB and a well prepared MGA can more than hold its own in historic racing Around 100000 MGArsquos were sold during its 7 year production most of which went to America The timeline and changes in each model-

There are no new members to report this month With the help of Peter Moras and John Donohoe I have been undertaking a few housekeeping tasks this month One of these tasks was to ensure all members with email addresses have their current email address listed in our ASCC Yahoo Groups site As this task was becoming a little cumbersome for some of the newer members an alternative solution was reviewed with Peter Moras It seemed a simpler method to update and then maintain the email list was using our ascc1930yahoocomau mail system I crossed-checked every member and updated the list and assigned a category of ldquoASCC Newsletterrdquo to each We now have all 84 members with email addresses now on that system Our last newsletter was issued using that list and neither Peter nor I had any contact from members not receiving their newsletter If the newsletter had not been delivered due to an incorrect email addresses I would have received a ldquofailed to deliverrdquo email from Yahoo mail In the future when a new member joins the club after I issue the new member pack I will access our email site and add the new memberrsquos email address naturally assuming they have provided one This will ensure our mailing list is current so members get their newsletter early along with any bulletins This process also removes the present need of me having to ldquoinviterdquo a new member to join the ASCC Yahoo Groups list and them acceptingrdquo that invitation before they can be added to the list This process can sometimes become confusing If they have difficulty or simply donrsquot respond we cannot email them and I cannot add them to the list automatically As a result I think we can let the use of the ASCC Yahoo Groups site lapse Another task this month has been to update the Shannonrsquos hosted Australian Sporting Car Club site Our Vice President John Donohoe has kindly offered to take over the maintenance of the site Our Editor has included a hyperlink to this site in our Newsletter Directory Each Month John will upload our latest newsletter and delete the old one Any For Sale items will also be updated A copy of the ASCC Constitution is also available on the site and will be referenced in welcoming letters to new members The site is capable of taking photos of our club activities

MGA Buying Guide ndash Classic Cars September 2003
