Electing God At her founding, the United States of America was unique among the nations of the world. Here, unlike anywhere else, traditional Christianity synthesized with republican political thought. We take this merger for granted today, because the concept of liberty is so fundamental to how we understand both our citizenship and our Christian faith: God set Israel free from slavery; Christ sets sinners free from sin, death, and hell. The American Revolution set the colonies free from the tyranny of King George; a “government of laws, not of men,” established political and individual liberties unlike any the world had ever seen.

To help fathom how radical a change was this partnership of traditional faith and modern politics, let’s take a quick look at biblical and Lutheran precedents. Martin Luther cites Romans 13 in his Table of Duties at the end of his Small Catechism:

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authority. For wherever the governing authority is, it is ordered by God. But whoever resists the governing authority, resists God’s order, and whoever resists will incur judgment, for that authority does not bear the sword in vain. It is God’s handmaid who executes punishment against those who do evil.”

Jesus himself taught us to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, but render unto God what is God’s.”

The reformers’ Augsburg Confession Article XVI “Concerning Civic Affairs” argues “the Gospel does not undermine government or family but completely requires both their preservation as ordinances of God and the exercise of love in these ordinances. Consequently, Christians owe obedience to their magistrates and laws except when commanded to sin.”

In the formation of the United States we see a movement from top-down to bottom-up political theology. Traditionally, God was the Lord and King who established monarchs to rule the state and a pope (or hierarchy of bishops) to rule the church. Trickle-down divine authority. In the Declaration of Independence and elsewhere, we see God as the Creator who endowed men with certain rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is grassroots divine authority, which moves from the Maker of the grass to the human population standing upon the grass as dignified creatures, free to self-govern.

In this new political and religious reality, American Christianity increasingly became more concerned with convincing free people to “elect God” than proclaiming the God who “elected us” in Christ Jesus. The preacher’s new job could be seen as reminding people to register for the religious vote and be sure to elect Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

The good news of the Gospel, however, lies in what God has elected to do for us “while we were yet sinners” (Romans 5:8). Ephesians opens with a beautiful campaign speech about the “God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ [who]…chose/elected us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him in love. He destined us for adoption as His children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will” (1:3-5).

The vote is in. God has elected to be your God. In baptism, Jesus Christ appointed you to his Cabinet as his ambassador to the world. This may become a baptism by fire, but thanks be to our electing God who gives us the victory!

Peace,

Pastor Tom

Loving Our Neighbors I want to tell you about a girl, who grew up in this church. She learned a lot of awesome stuff from many of you and some of your parents and grandparents. She didn't know it at the time but from you she learned that service is very important and because of those early seeds, it has been an integral part of her entire life. She learned that helping, giving, offering is important. That love and kindness and grace and patience matters most. From one of you she learned how to give a hug. From another she learned how to truly, deeply forgive.

But we know that church for many people is a synonym for judgement. This girl has even felt that way at times. She's felt excluded. Unwelcome. Afraid of walking through those doors because of mistakes, because of feelings of not belonging.

So this girl wants to help make sure that here, in this amazing awesome beautiful place with a huge kitchen and big gym and expansive park, that Bethesda has come to a place in its evolution where those old and ugly words and feelings are continually replaced with words like welcoming, and phrases like "come just as you are". She wants all of us to live as Jesus did for the people who DESERVED Him least but NEEDED Him most.

And the cool thing is, that girl is surrounded by many others who want the same thing and last Friday, she got to be a part of this really amazing moment where over 100 people who aren't "church people", but just neighbors to these church people, came in to this place and were welcomed and fed and loved. They came just as they were and ate together, watched a movie together, had some shave ice and popcorn.

We have three more nights like these planned and many more in the works. One a month. Starting October 21 with a Harvest Party for all families...many of whom have already RSVPed. I am asking all of you, each of you, to consider coming. Just to talk to someone. Or help with a game. Or take pictures and smile. For those of you who serve through food, there are recipes we need created for that night that will be in the entryway. Take one if you can do that part. Donating money is also welcome because obviously, this is new and our budget is thin.

But really, most of all, consider just coming and hanging out here for 15 minutes and being a part of something beautiful. Together, let's match how many neighbors come to how many of us show up...so all of those soon to be friends can experience what truly makes Bethesda awesome -- all of you.

I know many of you already do a lot with the food pantry and clothes closet and hospitality committee and a hundred other committees and projects that all make this church amazing. But this, this is more like giving one of those amazing hugs like I received every Sunday as a child. Those one on one connections are truly needed in this world. And Bethesda is here, smack dab in a neighborhood with thousands of families that need it most.

If you have ideas for future events, let us know. Us is me, Kay Kirkpatrick, Pastor Sarah, Stephanie Kinnaman and Pastor Steve.

Thanks for considering, Deanna Rivera

Next Events:

• November 18th, we’ll have a Thanksgiving feast with music by Tommy Parker and hopefully others!

Giving of Bibles Parents, Grandparents, Baptismal Sponsors or Mentors of 3 and 4-year-olds, 3rd and 4th Graders, or other children who may have missed this last year! As trusted and faithful adults in your child’s life, you are called to teach your child(ren) about all the amazing things that God has done in the world through Jesus Christ, by the work of the Holy Spirit. A mighty task! One very important tool needed to help you in this calling is the Bible.

At Bethesda, we give you the opportunity to present these scriptures to your child during worship. This helps show your child how important it is to immerse themselves in the biblical story and reminds the entire congregation of the promises they make to support and nurture both you and your child(ren) in your lives of faith.

This year, we will present these bibles during both worship services on October 23 with words of encouragement and prayer. If you would like to participate in this tradition, please call the church office at 541-688-9085 so that we can order enough bibles and let us know which service you plan on attending. If you forget, however, we will have a few extras!

Following are the two age appropriate Scriptures that we have chosen that best suit 3 and 4-year-olds and 3rd and 4th graders…

Preschool (3 and 4 year olds) The Spark Story Bible $20

3rd and 4th graders The Spark Bible $20

If the price of these bibles are an issue, please let us know! It is more important that the Word of God finds its way into your child’s hands. We are so excited to partner with you on this journey of nurturing your children in faith.

See you on October 23! If you have any questions, please talk to Pastor Sarah.

Reformation Party You are Invited to a Reformation Party for all ages from preschool to adult! This party will be on October 30 at 9:45am (during Sunday School time) in the Fellowship Hall. We’ll have hands-on, cross-generational games and stations to make Martin Luther and the Reformation come alive.

Even if you don’t normally come to Sunday School, this is a perfect opportunity to meet a few new people and learn a bit about how the church was changed almost 500 years ago! If you have any questions, talk to Pastor Sarah!

My Favorite Read in September: This Road We Traveled by Jane Kirkpatrick.

This is among my favorite Kirkpatrick books. She tells the story of Tabitha Brown who followed her family to Oregon in 1846 at age 66, nearly dying on the Applegate Trail, and eventually establishing the Tualatin Academy in Forest Grove, Oregon which became Pacific University. Good history, well told.

One of our early goals was to provide a variety of days and hours that we're open. Wed. evening appointments have been very popular with our shoppers. This week we had three families shop for free, fun, and fashionable clothing.

Thank you for the many donations of brand new and gently used clothing! Melva and I have been surprised at the amount of donations dropped off each week. Any extras are shared with Hosea House and Catholic Family Services for distribution.

A special thank you to our volunteers who have altered, mended, and ironed clothing! The front desk volunteers really help us out by scheduling appointments and making reminder phone calls. They also keep smiling as we drop off a basket to sort, etc. at their desk. You're terrific!

Ongoing needs:

• Shopping bags with handles

• Oregon and Oregon State clothing

• Socks in all sizes for toddlers/girls/boys/women/men

• Volunteers for Weds. evenings

• Girls sizes 6-14 cute shirts and tops, skirts, dresses

• Toddler underwear

Seasons Change…Give Thanks “In the just reward of labor, God’s will is done. In the help we give our neighbor, God’s will is done. In our world-wide task of caring for the hungry and despairing, in the harvest we are sharing, God’s will is done.” —ELW 679 v2

As fall begins, something seems to change in our hearts. We move from the enjoyment of creation that happens when the sun burns long in the sky to a feeling of gratitude and thankfulness that comes from the air being crisp and the days becoming shorter. I think that this change has been a natural occurrence for most of history. When crops are harvested and God has provided, the people are thankful. These days, we aren’t as tide to the cycles of the land. It was always a shocking day when the corn was harvested around the parsonage in which we lived in Illinois. We went from having the summer privacy fence of tall corn to the ground surrounding our home being fallow for the winter.

I know that some of you are glad that your gardens are slowing down or have stopped because you don’t want to can more or freeze more. But even without these connections, we feel the season change and we become a bit more thankful. In the hymn I quoted above, verse 2 speaks of God’s will being done. As God’s people, we can know that we are doing God’s will when we fulfill our calling, when we help those around us, when we share with those in need throughout the world, and we share what God has given to us. Verses 1 and 3 of the hymn names some of the things for which we are to be grateful. The final two lines of the hymn speak to the mystery and grace of God, “For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us, most of all, that love has found us, thanks be to God.”

We all have different ways that we express our thankfulness and gratitude. Some give away jars of the things that they have canned over the summer, some make special donations to projects and places that are dear to them, some volunteer time in their community, some spend a little more time with family, some give thanks by consuming anything with pumpkin pie spice, some give thanks by avoiding anything with pumpkin pie spice, and some give thanks in the depths or their hearts as the pray for those in need both near and far. As God’s people, created in God’s own image, we reflect who God is to the world and to one another. So the ways and the places that we are able to give thanks are unlimited because God is unlimited.

Today, I am thankful for each one of you. Who have taken a little time to read and reflect on these words I share but who also take their thankfulness seriously. You all teach me a lot about what it means to be generous, gracious, and thankful. Let us work together so that God’s will is done.

~ Pastor Steve

Bethesda Lutheran Church

Leave A Legacy Have you thought of including Bethesda in your will or living trust? Would you like to leave a lasting legacy to the church? Such bequests strengthen the ministry both now and into the future.

It can be as simple as including in your will:

“I leave ____% to Bethesda Lutheran Church, an Oregon non-profit corporation, 4445 Royal Avenue, Eugene, Oregon, 97401.”

Feel free to contact Pastor Steve, or Lois Toftemark about the Bethesda Foundation, or Dave Bullard about the Bethesda Mission Endowment Fund.
