Welcome to the October issue of the IBIS Care Miranda Newsletter.

Spring has sprung and the weather is racing towards Summer. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you all of the importance of sunscreen, time in the shade and drinking lots of water. We have many wonderful outdoor areas, here at IBIS Care Miranda, it is therefore very important we take extra care when spending time outdoors.

We would like to also welcome EEN’s Tara Danzey and Alessia Banh to IBIS Care Miranda. Tara and Alessia are our first Endorsed Enrolled Nurses and will be working between the Registered Nurse and Personal Care Assistant Team Leader. Their duties will cover wound dressings, assist with clinical reviews, [CONT’D P2]

co-ordination of resident of the day tasks and assist with clinical audits.

In building news, the wander alert is now in operation at the front entrance. This is another successful step towards the security improvements we

have planned for the facility. CCTV is being installed this month in approved common areas, with a new care staff workspace now completed.

In kitchen news, we are in the process of investigating ‘tray service’. As you are aware, we take our food service very seriously, hence the introduction of the Food Focus meeting. All sugges-tions on food service would be greatly appreciated. The recruitment of casual chefs has also com-menced. We will, no doubt, have more news on this in next months newsletter.

We were happy to see the arrival of new air cell mattresses for residents with complex care needs. Eight have been purchased, so far.

Staff were pleased to receive new uniforms this past month. The new garments are made from a more suitable material that compliments the duties of our industry better, making the garments more comfortable to wear, overall.

In IT news, we are in the process of upgrading our IT networks. Most care staff would be aware of the upgrade taking place and can be assured that the upgrade will provide a more effective documenta-tion tool for all care staff.

I hope you all enjoy everything this month has to offer.

Happy Birthday

OCTOBER!

Notes from September…

Our scenic bus trip to La Perouse on the 15th involved a little breeze, a touch of sun and a lot of ice cream. I was thrilled to see Peg, Edna, Elsa and Pat join us on the bus this month. Those that choose to take adventures with Lifestyle, generally seem to enjoy themselves a great deal. We strongly encourage all of you to climb on board and spend some time with us as we explore the surrounding community and places of interest. Art for extension produced some very happy artists this month when we experimented with Canvas Art. The tools for this activity were, a blank canvas, tape, paint and a paint brush. Participants taped geometrical patterns on their canvas then applied their chosen colours. Once the paint had dried, the tape was removed to reveal some pretty impressive pieces. We will be exhibiting these artworks within the facility shortly.

Cards for craft was also an activi-ty we all enjoyed. Destined for family and friends, the cards were crafted from ribbons, stick-ers, feathers and shiny bits and pieces. Notes by Jodie Parker - IBIS Care Miranda Lifestyle Co-ordinator.

Alfredo the accordion player popped in to say hello recently. His unique performance wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but, appre-ciated none the less.

W e tend to take our weekly outing very seriously here at IBIS Care Miranda – due

to the fact that, we are guaranteed to have a seriously good time.

Whether we’re heading to Southgate for a spot of shopping, the club for a chance to dance or our local for brunch or lunch, it’s always a great opportunity to connect with our fellow residents and friends, out-side normal daily routine. Our September trip to the Taren Point Hotel was an interesting one as the club had their plans for renovation displayed for us to see. It was a great opportunity to take a glimpse of what the new venue will look like once completed. It will definitely be on our ‘to visit list’ in the future – if not simply for the oversized portion of chicken schnitzel the club has on offer – scrumptious. Jean thoroughly enjoyed her menu choice of chicken schnitzel, devouring it in its entirety.

Scheduled bus outings are an important part of the IBIS Care Miranda routine. Regular visits exploring the surrounding community is a simple way our resi-

dents can feel connected with life outside of IBIS Care Miranda. It is a safe and supportive gateway to discovering new and exciting things outside of the comfort of home.

Beverley Benger

Beverley was born in Moree, however, she remembers it not being a very good place to grow up. Bev’s father, Belmore Victor, was a carpenter and when jobs became scarce, he moved the family to Sydney. Bev was 8 years old.

Bev remembers her dad being unhappy with the move, but, her mother was excited. Spending some childhood years in Nowra, the family witnessed the 1940s bushfires, first hand. Beverley’s dad was out on the trucks helping providing fire fighting support, including evacuating residents in the area.

Beverley remembers moving around a lot, due to her dad’s occupation and having to find work. The family found a home in Kogarah.

In the early 50s, Bev met her husband Eric and had two children, Leigh and Kent. Bev remembers her husband always saying, after leaving each night, “Why don’t we get mar-ried?”. Bev thought nothing of it, thinking he was joking.

We would like to thank Beverley for sharing a small part of her story with us.

IBIS Care Miranda … Coming up in October...

Do you have any old photographs? Let the Lifestyle team know if you have any photographs from the past that hold a particular story - or something interesting from history, perhaps. We would love to discuss your pictures in a future Newsletter.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

A month of music at Miranda...

Jennifer Avery from Krystal Clear Sounds will be performing this month. She brings with her an extensive song list from the 40s, 50s and 60s, that you are all sure to love. A karaoke machine is also part of her entourage, enabling the audience to join in. I hope you have all got your singing vocals warmed up and ready to go on the 7th.

Ron Ashton will hit the IBIS Care Miranda stage on the 14th of this month. Ron is a regular rocker we all know and love. He needs no introduction, he is one of our favourites and guaranteed to get the audience on the dance floor.

Kane and his keyboard w ill also be back this month, taking the stage on the 20th. Kane’s performance will follow the fortnightly barbeque, so be sure to fill up the fuel tank be-fore securing your spot centre stage.

Something NEW! New Horizons Choir w ill make their debut on the 27th of this month. The group brings with them a repertoire of recognisable music that compliments our community era. The choir consists of a huge 30 members, making this performance a stand out for the month and one not to be missed.

Don’t forget David Mason Cox is on the 28th.

Are you coming to the

meeting?

Do you have feedback,

suggestions or a complaint?

Attending the monthly Residents

and Relative meeting provides a

great opportunity to have your say.

All are encouraged to attend.

October 13th 2016

We hope to see you there.

O n the bus this month… Shopping, lunch outings, St

George Leagues, Sightseeing and Men’s Group. We hope to see you on the bus very soon.

We have a 100th Birthday this month! Patricia Dowling will be hitting the century milestone on the 7th of this month. We will be celebrating with cake, balloons and morning tea in the extension dining room. We have word, the local newspaper may also be paying a visit.

In entertainment news, we have a new group popping in this month. New Horizons contacted me recently, in regards to their choir performing for the residents. I am confident this will be a performance we will all enjoy and I look forward to their visit. We also have a new soloist, Jennifer Avery, visiting on the 7th. Jennifer brings with her

a karaoke machine for all of you to make good use of. She is also quite passionate about music from the 40s, 50s and 60s, something I know she will have in common with most of you.

I hope everybody is enjoying our regular BBQ. Please remember to come down to the main lounge should you wish to secure your sausage from the grill. Dining outdoors is one of the fortunate perks we have at IBIS Care Miranda, therefore, don’t be afraid of the sunny days ahead as we have plenty of shaded areas perfect for Spring BBQ’s.

The Residents and Relative meeting is scheduled for the 13th of this month. The scheduled meeting is a great opportunity to have your say or provide feedback on how we can do things better. Please feel encouraged to come along and join the conversation.

The September Food Focus meeting went well. We are finding this is a good opportunity for residents to suggest ways in which we can improve our food service. We have had suggestions to downsize the quantity served, with of course an opportunity in place to request an additional serving, if required. And, dessert was mentioned with a preference to move more towards puddings, as opposed to the quantity of fruit salad and custard currently being served. All suggestions have been recorded and will be discussed in meeting with the ESM and Head Chef.

On the activities schedule, a new word association activity commenced this month. During this activity, participants were asked to connect items and words to specific letters. The feedback provided, would suggest this is an activity enjoyed by all. I will continue to source more activities that provide you all with the mental workout, I know you all love.

I hope you all enjoy the activities and events we have prepared for you this October. Should you have any suggestions, comments or complaints, remember my door is always open. Life is for Living! Jodie Parker Lifestyle Co-Ordinator

Residents enjoyed quite a few trips out and about in Sep-tember, popping in-to Taren Point Hotel for an absolutely scrumptious feast. Whilst at home, we spent some quality time singing and jiving to classics by a few of our favour-ite performers.

As part of our continuous improvement initiatives, a mobile dental service will be attending the facility on the 7th of No-vember and the 19th of December 2016. Consent forms have been sent out to residents representatives and will need to be completed and sent back prior to

your first scheduled visit.

In addition, the hip protectors consent forms have been sent out for those residents identified as ‘in need’. Completed forms are to be returned to me as soon as possible.

If you have any questions in regards to the forms mentioned, please do not hesitate to come and speak with me.

Kylie Gough Care Manager

Letter from the Care Manager... Hip Protectors [Letter distributed as follows] Please be advised through ongoing clinical review your loved one has been identified in the higher Falls Risk category following evaluation by our falls risk assessment tool (FRAT).

Whilst Ibis care Miranda endeavour to support all residents with care needs we also encourage that identified residents of higher falls risks category have the additional support of HIP PROTECTORS.

It is highly documented that persons above 65 are less like to return to normal function following a fracture and as a person ages the likelihood of mortality within 12 months of a fractured neck of femur (NOF) increases. Osteoporosis Interna-tional February 2009, Volume 20, Issue 2 pp 221-229.

Although Hip protectors do not reduce the risk of falls, they do assist with risk minimisation and have a proven outcome of reduction of injury in the event of a fall. So for this reason prevention is the best medicine.

Hip protectors are available for purchase for $50.00 per item through Ibis Care Miranda in conjunction with our physiother-apist provider (Rotas rehab). External recommended retail exceed $90.00 per item.

Ideally it is recommended each resident of the higher falls risk category have access of 3-4 pair to allow for laundering time, however 2 pair would be acceptable.

I have attached a consent for Hip Protectors to your monthly account. The form can also be requested at reception. Please sign with your preference and return to IBISCARE MIRANDA at the above address, Attention; Kylie Gough.
