NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
THE MUSIC CENTER 16/17 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
My first year as president and CEO of The Music Center has flown by, but what a difference a year makes! We just recently completed one of our most successful summers ever: our DanceDTLA free Friday night dance parties captivated more than 15,000 people; our Moves After Dark site-specific dance performances saw sold-out crowds; our multi-sensory Sleepless: The Music
Center After Hours events introduced thousands to The Music Center; and our Spotlight arts training and scholarship program provided more than 500 students and their families with free art workshops at the Spotlight Academy. In addition, we hosted more than 30,000 people at Grand Park + The Music Center’s 4th of July Block Party. To top it off, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently approved the funds to kick start our plans to renovate The Music Center Plaza, which will help us provide even more access to the arts to all Angelenos. We thank the County, as well as our donors, for their support of our work.
The momentum continues with the opening of our 14th dance season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, a season in which we will break boundaries!
With Celebrate Forsythe, we salute a choreographer who asks us to reimagine ballet. In fact, William Forsythe, one of the world’s most innovative choreographers, has revolutionized classical ballet with his bold contemporary approach. We are so pleased to present three of the nation’s most esteemed ballet companies – Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet – all hand-picked by Mr. Forsythe – which will perform a triple bill of his works during each performance. I hope you will take the opportunity to also experience Forsythe Designed: A Costume Exhibition, which launched on our Music Center Plaza earlier this month and now appears in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The exhibition showcases the creativity of Mr. Forsythe’s aesthetic and how he has transformed the dance landscape with costume design that is radically different from the norm.
Our Celebrate Forsythe engagement and costume exhibition culminate a month-long series of events called Fall for Forsythe, a first-ever partnership of three leading cultural arts institutions, The Music Center, the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Much like Mr. Forsythe has done with ballet, we continue to reimagine what it means to be a performing arts center in the 21st century. This dance season is an important part of that, as we showcase world renowned and up-and-coming choreographers who expand the definition, impact and emotionality of movement. I hope you will continue to join us on this journey.
I value your support and welcome your ideas.
Warmly,
Rachel MoorePresident & CEO, The Music Center

Anchoring a roster of world-class arts organizations in Downtown Los Angeles, The Music Center has long been at the forefront of presenting innovative and critically acclaimed performances since its opening in 1964.
The Music Center’s 22-acre campus includes four spectacular venues— Ahmanson Theater, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Mark Taper Forum and Walt Disney Concert Hall—displaying iconic architecture that is emblematic of Los Angeles' place on the world stage. Celebrated for its illustrious dance programming, Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, and home to four world-class resident companies—Center Theatre Group, LA Opera, LA Phil and Los Angeles Master Chorale—The Music Center is a destination where audiences find inspiration in the very best of live performance.
Drawing on proven experience and long-standing relationships, The Music Center continues its tradition of artistic excellence well beyond its stages and into the community through relevant public engagement programming and nationally recognized arts education programs. Breaking the mold of a traditional performing arts center, The Music Center activates outdoor spaces, such as Grand Park and The Music Center Plaza, providing access and imaginative programming that resonates with and reflects the surrounding community. This programming constantly seeks to provide non-traditional avenues for discovery and ensures the vibrancy and relevancy of The Music Center to future generations of arts lovers whose cultural touchstones are as diverse as Los Angeles itself. Though love of the arts can begin at any age, The Music Center recognizes the arts as a pillar of learning and is a proponent of the arts in any well-rounded education. As such, Music Center staff work year-round to provide lifelong learning opportunities that benefit students in grades K-12, in addition to their teachers, in schools located throughout the County of Los Angeles, as well as directly at The Music Center, cultivating the next generation of artists and arts leaders.
The Music Center is truly a performing arts center for the 21st century, presenting the very best of the classical arts, yet continually pushing the boundaries to further inspire and contribute to the artistic voice of Los Angeles.

William Forsythe was one of the first choreographers Helgi Tomasson engaged after Tomasson became San Francisco Ballet’s (SF Ballet) artistic director and principal choreographer in 1985. Forsythe made New Sleep for San Francisco Ballet in 1987. He has staged several of his ballets here since, and in 2015 returned to the Company to remake his ballet Pas/Parts. In revising the work created for Paris Opera Ballet in 1999, he changed it so significantly that instead of a North American premiere, it became, in effect, a 2016 world premiere. Forsythe had long wanted to revisit this ballet to make it more classical—“it was unnecessarily modern in some respects,” he says. And he wanted to do it at SF Ballet “because of this musical quality I’ve seen here for 30 years,” he says. “It’s something that Helgi has insisted upon.” Working with the Company’s dancers, he “found new freedom in it by revisiting the classicism.” Forsythe is known for his use of syncopation and counterpoint and the three-dimensionality of his movement, in which épaulement (use of the head and upper body in opposition to the rest of the body) figures large. In Pas/Parts 2016, he uses stylistic differences to enhance the counterpoint. “I’m trying to alternate between very symmetrical classical counterpoints and more amorphous counterpoints that flow,” he says. The ballet’s name suggests a series of parts, visible in
PAUSE
the flow of solos, duets, trios and mercurial groupings. “What I like,” Forsythe says, “is that first you think it’s about a few people. Then they diminish as others take over, and then, near the end, another group takes over, people you didn’t see at the beginning.” Forsythe works fast, and he likes to experiment, which means the dancers had to radically change things they’d memorized, and do so on the spot. In playing with movement for the new finale, for example, Forsythe called on one dancer to do her part in a duet, but alone, and double time, leaving out all repeats and adding a cha-cha rhythm. Working in this collaborative way is something Forsythe encourages dancers to do. “Don’t be afraid to offer yourselves,” he tells them. He asks them to help him build structure by inserting pauses, not stopping “in the most logical place,” or doing a phrase backward. Collaboration gives the dancers a sense of ownership. “That’s very important,” he says. “That’s what creates a performing community: ‘These are your steps. They were made for you.”

INTERMISSION (20 minutes)
Set to the final movement from Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 9, The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude displays all the traditional accoutrements of classical dance: tutus, point shoes, virtuosity, lyricism and a friendly display of formal manners between the sexes. Originally the last part of the full-length Six Counter Points, the pas de cinq (three women, two men) provides a breathtaking display of classical technique that serves to illustrate the way in which Forsythe sees the ballet vocabulary as part of a range of choreographic possibilities—distilled here to its purest and most brilliant form. An affectionate homage to both Petipa and Balanchine in its courtly partnering conventions, compositional structure (solo variations set amongst pas de deux, pas de trois, and ensemble sections), and speedy, precise allegro work, The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude nonetheless belongs utterly to our time in its overt celebration of the dancers’ ability to make technical difficulty into a triumph of physical mastery and in its self-aware embodiment of a whole tradition of dance.
Notes by Roslyn Sulcas, courtesy of Forsythe Productions. Used by permission.
Set for the entire ensemble of a ballet company, William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite contains massive group sections amongst volatile solos and pas de deux. A single dancer labeled as the “Other Person” stands out from the crowd as a remnant from Forsythe’s preceding work, Artifact. Created in three weeks during Forsythe’s first year at Ballet Frankfurt, Artifact is Forsythe’s first full-length ballet, which incorporated theatrical roles for the dancers and paid homage to the great epochs of ballet. Distinguished dance educator and former Forsythe dancer Jodie Gates was the first person to help rework the initial four-act work into a one-act abstraction, titled Suite From Artifact, in 2004 for Scottish Ballet. It contains the dance-only segments but remains highly inquisitive of the traditional elements of ballet. For 32 years, Forsythe has been exploring Artifact Suite with specific companies by encouraging dancers to approach his choreography with curiosity. After spending weeks learning the choreography with stagers Kathryn Bennetts and Noah Gelber and discovering the particulars of hand movements and forming partnerships in the pas de deuxs for a few days with Forsythe, Houston Ballet added its own texture to Artifact Suite with its premiere performances in September. “With Artifact Suite,” Gates recalls, “every dancer on stage is entirely important. They all discover the work together through Bill’s demand for hyper musicality and pointe work, his extreme attention to counterpoint and balance.” Throughout Artifact Suite dancers dissect traditional ballet movements across every corner of the stage in jewel-colored leotards and black tights. Iconic moments from ballet’s history, such as George Balanchine’s enigmatic Rubies from his ballet Jewels, are referenced and transformed in the women’s epaulement and mannerisms during Artifact Suite’s “9 Point” and “1,000 Piques” sections. Forsythe’s meticulous exploration of the performance space and musical composition is also made evident with drastic lighting changes and sudden curtain drops (used to signify the various musical caesuras in the composition) during Bach’s energetic Chaconne from “Partita No 2 in D minor” and Eva Crossman-Hecht’s Chaconne improvisations for piano. After three decades of choreographic investigation, Artifact Suite continues to be one of Forsythe’s stylistic masterpieces for ballet.

WHO'S WHO – SAN FRANCISCO BALLET
ABOUT SAN FR ANCISCO BALLETSan Francisco Ballet, the oldest professional ballet company in America, has emerged as a globally renowned arts organization since its founding in 1933. Headed by brothers Willam, Lew and Harold Christensen from the late 1930s through the ’70s, it made its mark by staging the first full-length American productions of Swan Lake and Nutcracker in the early 1940s. Helgi Tomasson’s arrival as artistic director in 1985 marked the beginning of a new era. With SF Ballet, he has staged acclaimed full-length productions of Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, Giselle, Nutcracker and others. In recent years, the Company’s touring programs have become increasingly ambitious, with engagements in Washington, D.C.; Moscow; Paris; London; Hamburg; Beijing and Reykjavík, Iceland. A readers’ poll conducted in 2006 by Dance Europe magazine named SF Ballet “Company of the Year,” marking the first time a non-European company took that honor. In 2008, SF Ballet and the SF Ballet School celebrated their 75th anniversary. In October 2013, the Company performed at Lincoln Center in New York, where The New York Times declared SF Ballet “a national treasure.”

Subsequently, he began his professional career with The Joffrey Ballet and Harkness Ballet. He later joined New York City Ballet where he became one of the company’s most celebrated principal dancers. Tomasson has choreographed more than 40 works. His numerous awards include being named Officier in the French Order of Arts, an honorary degree from The Juilliard School and the Grand Cross Star of the Order of the Falcon, Iceland’s most prestigious honor. WHO'S WHO – HOUSTON BALLET
ABOUT HOUSTON BALLETOn February 17, 1969, a troupe of 15 young dancers made its stage debut at Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. Since that time, Houston Ballet has evolved into a company of 59 dancers with a state-of-the-art performance space build especially for the company, the Wortham Theater Center. The company is housed in Houston Ballet's $46.6 million Center for Dance, the largest professional dance facility in America which opened in April 2011. Australian choreographer Stanton Welch has served as artistic director of Houston Ballet since 2003, raising the level of the Company’s classical technique and commissioning many new works from dance makers such as Christopher Bruce, Jorma Elo, James Kudelka, Trey McIntyre, Julia Adam, Natalie Weir, Nicolo Fonte and Edwaard Liang. Executive Director James Nelson serves as the administrative leader of the company, a position he assumed in February 2012 after serving as the company’s general manager for over a decade. Houston Ballet has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. Over the past 15 years, the company has appeared in London at Sadler’s Wells; at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Russia; in six cities in Spain; in Montréal and Ottawa; at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; in New York at City Center and The Joyce Theater; at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris; at the Arts Centre Melbourne State Theatre in Melbourne, Australia; and in cities large and small across the United States. Houston Ballet has emerged as a leader in the expensive, labor-intensive task of nurturing the creation and development of new full-length narrative ballets. Houston Ballet Orchestra was established in the late 1970s and currently consists of 61 professional musicians who play all ballet performances at Wortham Theater Center under Music Director Ermanno Florio. Houston Ballet’s Education and Outreach Program has reached approximately 50,000 Houston area students (as of January 2016). Houston Ballet’s Academy has over 1,000 students and has had five academy students win awards at the prestigious international ballet competition, the Prix de Lausanne, with one student winning the overall competition in 2010.

Welch has created works for such prestigious international companies as Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet. Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones, O.B.E., and Garth Welch, A.M., two of Australia’s most gifted dancers of the 1960s and 1970s.
