Their country was having real problems and the people were los- ing hope. The king didn’t like this much, so he threw Jeremiah in prison. God told Jeremiah to buy a piece of property while in prison. God had the full picture; Jeremiah trusting God followed through, though not fully knowing the impact of this purchase. God knew the people would not obey and the consequence was that Babylon, an enemy of the nation of Israel, would be warring with them within the year and Israel was going to lose. Why would God ask Jeremiah to buy a property knowing full well that Jeremiah would never be able to enjoy the property he had paid top dollar for? The answer is to give hope to the people! By the time, some 75 years later when Israel would return after being taken over, Jeremiah would be dead, but the people remembered his actions. God had a bigger plan for his people, even the rebellious ones! Even the sinful ones. This event helps us to also recognize the sacrifices of those who have gone before us as people of faith, some not having the privilege to witness the fruition of their efforts, but trusting that God’s plan included their faithfulness. That is often what God is asking from His people. He is asking His people to trust that He has a big- ger plan. He is asking us to prayerfully seek His direction and sacrificially give of our time, talents, gifts, service and witness, sometimes only trusting that our obedience will make a dif- ference in the lives of others, many we may not know. Being a part of something larger than we are should motivate and inspire us to affirm He is using us for His larger plan. What an exciting prospect. Dear Church Family,

This month of October is often the month for our Charge Conference. As

you probably know, this is the time for our annual meeting with our

District Superintendant and our church leaders to review the current year

and consider what is ahead for next year. Every time I begin to prepare

for this meeting, I am reminded of the great commitment our church has

to come together, each using your gifts and talents to be the body of

Christ. I want to thank everyone who has givien of your time, prayers,

resources and encouragement to share the love of Christ to our community

and beyond.

In our Tuesday morning Bible Study this week, one of the Scriptures was

from Jeremiah 32. Jeremiah was a prophet about 600 BC, who was hearing the voice of God,

who was asking him to share a warning to the people, that they needed to get their priorities

straight, the king included. Their country was having real problems and the people were los-

ing hope. The king didn’t like this much, so he threw Jeremiah in prison. God told Jeremiah

to buy a piece of property while in prison. God had the full picture; Jeremiah trusting God

followed through, though not fully knowing the impact of this purchase. God knew the people

would not obey and the consequence was that Babylon, an enemy of the nation of Israel,

would be warring with them within the year and Israel was going to lose. Why would God

ask Jeremiah to buy a property knowing full well that Jeremiah would never be able to enjoy

the property he had paid top dollar for? The answer is to give hope to the people! By the

time, some 75 years later when Israel would return after being taken over, Jeremiah would

be dead, but the people remembered his actions. God had a bigger plan for his people, even

the rebellious ones! Even the sinful ones. This event helps us to also recognize the sacrifices

of those who have gone before us as people of faith, some not having the privilege to witness

the fruition of their efforts, but trusting that God’s plan included their faithfulness. That is

often what God is asking from His people. He is asking His people to trust that He has a big-

ger plan. He is asking us to prayerfully seek His direction and sacrificially give of our time,

talents, gifts, service and witness, sometimes only trusting that our obedience will make a dif-

ference in the lives of others, many we may not know. Being a part of something larger than

we are should motivate and inspire us to affirm He is using us for His larger plan. What an

exciting prospect. Almighty God desires for us to be His hands, feet, ie. the body of Christ, in

the world today.

Thank you for your commitment to His purposes.

Needs of the KAIROS

Prison Ministry

Carol and Rev. Russ Munch will be joining Willie Younger

(Weekend Leader) for a 3 ½ day spiritual retreat at the Stevenson

Correctional Unit for men in Cuero on Oct. 27-30. In support of this

outreach initiative, the following tangible expressions of Christ’s

unconditional love (i.e., agape) are needed in order for this trio to

fully complete their discipleship mission:

I. Thirty (30) minute blocks of prayer for the prisoners,

their famlies, the prison staff and the Kairos team

members…as facilitated by the colored prayer vigil

sign-up sheet packets circulated at our two Sunday

morning church services.

II. Homemade Cookies to serve to the residents selected to

participate in this Kairos event (our 3 missionaries need

25 dozen each or 75 dozen total to take inside the prison).

III. Monetary donations to buy bakery cookies (i.e., edible

agape) to gift each of the 2400 inmates at Stevenson with

one dozen of these treats apiece.

IV. Sponsorships (whole or partial) to cover the $225-plus

dollars it cost to host each inmate engaged in this life-

changing experience. NOTE: the goal is to have FUMC

sponsor at least one inmate.

All home-baked cookies and money must be turned in to Ronica in

the church office by noon on Wednesday, October 26th. Sign up to

pray on the sign-up sheets in the back of the Chapel and in the

narthex of the sanctuary.

[FYI – “Kairos” is a Greek word meaning God’s special time. This ministry focuses

heavily on the love and forgiveness offered through the blood of Jesus and

on becoming “The Church” inside of the prison fences.]

In July, 2016 Troop 45 became 80 years old. At the Court of Honor held

the evening of September 21 Troop members were given new combination

patches with the Troop number and the veterans bar for 80 years. About 120

Troop members and their families plus a few former members attended. We

started with a fried chicken dinner followed by the Court of Honor. Eagle ceremo-

nies were held for 2 Eagle Scouts whose families were unable to have a ceremony.

Recognitions were given to a man who donated material and time to build the inside

shelving for the new Scout trailer and to Scoutmaster Tim Greaud who donated much

time organizing the purchase and getting the trailer to Bay City and putting on the finish-

ing touches. Tim’s plaque will be installed inside the trailer.

The Scout Troop is planning a campout the last weekend of September. Nothing special is

planned for October but the usual work on merit badges and rank advancements will con-

tinue.

The Troop has added 1 new Scout and 2 transfer Scouts. Cub Pack 4545 now has about

100 Cubs and 20 adults. The oldest Cub Scouts meet with Troop 45 on Wednesday nights

but have their own program. Six of about 20 Cubs with parents and their leader were at

the September 14th meeting. The Youth Building looked a bit crowded but was abuzz with

activity.

The Cub Scouts received information about this year’s popcorn sales at the Pack meeting

held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Thursday, September 22. They will soon be sell-

ing. Popcorn sales and a cake auction in the spring are fund raisers for the Pack. Proceeds

help fund their program yearly.

COURT OF HONOR 5

Help for the HomelessHelp for the HomelessHelp for the HomelessHelp for the Homeless

Bay City FUMC’s Missions Committee will be conducting a

church-wide/community-wide collection of sleeping bags,

coats and personal hygiene items for homeless men, women and

children. As cooler weather approaches, these items will be distributed to

the disenfranchised who, by circumstance or choice, find themselves to be

homeless.

Church members are asked to search their storage areas (i.e., closets,

garages, chests, etc.) for ‘respectfully-used’ sleeping bags and outerwear

to bring by the church office. Hygiene products such as toothbrushes,

toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, dental floss, foot powder, etc. can

also be dropped off. This collection will continue until December 19th

with final distribution to be completed no later than Christmas Eve.

As this effort progresses, volunteers will be needed to assist with

cleaning and packing sleeping bags and coats before giving them to these

residents of the streets. So, you are asked to prayerfully consider this

invitation to be a tangible part of this special project.

If you wish to become involved and/or need to have your

donations picked up, call Willie Younger at 979-240-4872.
