IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!
2016 Gala & Awards Night
Welcome to the October edition of the
Compass newsletter. I can’t get over
how fast this year is going. I trust
everyone had a refreshing break over
the holidays and you’re ready to power
through what’s left of 2016. It has been
a very exciting time over the past
month, with Open Days, EOI’s coming
in, talks around funding or lack there
of, and reviewing the 2017 Compass
Calendar. I have enjoyed having a
“consolidation” year, but what lies
ahead for Compass is shaping up to be
something pretty special.
The Compass brand is strong across
the Sunshine Coast and every
potential new trainee has had
Compass in their top 3 picks for 2017.
We have slightly changed the look and
the feel in way we are promoting
Compass and it is generating a great
deal of positive feedback. The trial
days are commencing over the coming
month and I for one am looking forward
to a healthy intake of new trainees next
year.
A special thank you must go to our
good friends at Cricks Nambour. Matt,
Dan and the team once again helped
make the 2016 Compass Charity Golf
Day another hugely successful event.
With 86 golfers and another 10 guests
for lunch, the day was again
unforgettable. Loads of prizes, raffles,
auctions and giveaways raised a
massive $23,000 that will be put to
DJ’S 2
CENTS
good use in the Compass Assistance
Dogs program. Special thanks must
also go to all the Hole Sponsors, prize
donors and our guest speaker Clint
Robinson who endured a barrage of
questions and “man crush” moments
from his biggest fan Matt Murray.
During September I also took a trip
down the Bruce Highway to attend the
Fresh Futures Market held in Ipswich.
The expo invites over 80 service
providers from the Disability and
Mental Health sectors to come
together and present their business to
more than 400 prospective clients and
families. The day was a huge
success, with over 40 EOI’s handed
out over the course of the day, along
with numerous possible collaborations
with other organisations in the area.
Something to keep an eye out for over
the coming month, is the design and
construction of the first portion of the
Sensory Garden at our Caloundra
campus. Over the past month we
have been approached by the team
from SmartCity to undertake some
practical work experience in a
community based organisation. As
most of you are aware, it has been a
long time in waiting for the roll out of
the Sensory Garden and this
collaboration will allow for a staged
approach until its completion. Rob
also has plans to commence work on
the pizza oven that will be the main
attraction of the area.
The Compass Assistance Dogs
program gained some added traction
over the month, with an invitation to
the Maroochy RSL staff and families
breakfast. Continuing on from their
generous sponsorship of Watson,
Compass was invited to attend as an
introduction to all staff. This was truly
inspiring, not only with the sheer
amount of numbers that attended, but
the way in which we (mostly Watson)
were immediately taken in as part of
the Maroochy RSL family. Thank you
to CEO Clare Patton and her team for
this opportunity and we look forward
to what the future holds for the two
businesses. Just a quick note for
those that haven’t booked in their staff
Christmas Party as yet… Hosted by
Hot 91 the Maroochy RSL Tinsels and
Ties Christmas Gala is one not to be
missed. $10 from every ticket sold will
be donated to
the Compass
Assistance
Dogs
program.
Please call
Maroochy RSL
events team 07
5443 2211 to
book your
tickets. Hope to see you there.
Until next month , I will wish you all
the very best and look forward to
speaking with you soon.
Cheers DJ

Malo!
This means “hello” in Tongan! I have
just returned from two wonderful
weeks in Tonga as part of my annual
leave. Tonga is made up of 177
individual islands and really is a
paradise. I was privileged to go
swimming with the hump back whales,
who migrate every year up from the
Antarctic, by the east coast of
Australia and then stop at Tonga
where the female whales give birth to
their calves. A big thank you to the
management and staff who stepped in
and ensured the centres ran well in
my absence; I don’t think anyone
really missed me as it appeared to be
business as usual when I returned!
The staff and trainees have returned
from a well-earned rest over the
September holiday break and have all
settled back into their centres and
programs. We held a very successful
two days of training for all of the staff
where we focussed on a review of
specific policies and procedures and
also had an inspiring talk from an
education expert Jonathon Anstock,
who provided a very inspirational
session on how to work effectively
with students of all ages. The staff
particularly benefitted from a session
with Ian Newton who challenged us on
our current eating habits, especially
the consumption of sugar! As a result,
a number of us have committed to a
30 day challenge where we have
given up not only sugar, but all
processed foods, grains and our
addiction to the occasional glass of
wine, or other alcoholic beverages.
We will keep you informed as to our

progress. I am very impressed with
the dedication shown so far, given we
are only two weeks into the challenge.
October promises to be a busy month;
we will be preparing for the visits by
potential trainees and their families
and scheduling trial days for them. A
number of the centres will again host
Open Days and both trainees, families
and staff are commencing work on
their costumes for the Awards Night
scheduled for the 26th November. We
are receiving some great feedback
and suggestions for the theme of
Kings and Queens, with some people
keeping this a secret, so they can
surprise us all on the night. I will look
forward to seeing the innovative
costumes on the evening.
Until next month,

September Memories
Considering Martial Arts? Con-
tact us to find out more today!
Erin Cameron, Palmwoods trainee, spent the month of August completing a 400km walk, The European Peace
Walk. She has walked across Hungary, Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia, to reach Italy, with
her friend Gail, and her mum. She walked through villages
and woods, staying with host families along the way. As
well, she visited the cities of Zagreb, Ljubljana, Trieste, Vi-
enna, Bratislava and Buda-pest. Well done Erin! We are
proud of you.
Just a couple of the beautiful
photos Helen took while she
was away.

COMPASS GYMPIE
COMPASS CABOOLTURE
The team in Gympie celebrated another busy term by visiting the Cobb & Co tourist park outside of town. Pirate ship, petting zoo and flying fox adventure playground contributed to a
fun day all fuelled on a sausage sizzle by the lake. Excellent day, great company and well earned rest.

We enjoyed a really busy month with lots of hard work in our gardens for our Open Days and
preparations for our spring planting. We have put in new gardens and recycled some old tyres for
herbs and flowers too. Our centre looks “blooming terrific!”
We are starting to pick fresh
salads and herbs for our
food prep session.
We continue to enjoy our walks around the park and have
enjoyed seeing the green foliage emerging with the recent
rains and warmer weather.
We have been discussing a new venture that will see us try-
ing new things in the kitch-
en, we can’t wait to see how
this goes, can you guess!
