Diana Godinez, 16 Years Old,

Crandall High School 10th Grade Diana loves creating new memories and building life long friendships here in Heartland. The fact that our community comes to-gether as one to support the local sports teams, academics and every-thing in between brings joy to Diana’s heart. Diana believes that you must find a way to give back to others and she has found her niche in volunteering at the Fall Festival every year. She is also involved in community service and picks up trash along the highway with a team that is sponsored by Crandall High School. Diana helps teachers prepare their class-room before school starts, helps out at the Thanksgiving Festival and the North Texas Food Bank. Diana feels it is cool to volunteer!

Best Decorated Yard

Halloween is just around the corner and that means lots of outdoor fall decorations. Halloween decorations

are permitted inside windows, on the exterior of your home and in the front yard. Decorations should be kept

to a proportionate size and setback of the home; they should not create excessive noise or light disturbance

for neighboring homes and should be appropriate for the holiday. Please do not install holiday decorations

any earlier that ten(10) days before the holiday and remove no later than seven (7) days after the holiday.

Time to ‘boo-tify’ your front yard for a chance to win Yard of the Month for October. The Beautification Com-

mittee will be selecting the Yard of the Month for the best decorated home using the following criteria: Ani-

mation ( moving parts), Sound Effects, Special Effects (fog, lighting & so forth), Interaction (feeling like part of

the scene when visiting) and Effective Use of Space.

Winners will be awarded a $25 credit through Calloway’s Blooming Rewards Loyalty Program

Judging will take place on Sunday. October 22nd between 7:00pm -9:00 pm

Timely Tips for October Gardeners Usher in the autumn season with creative displays for indoors and out! Transformation quickly occurs with pots of

mums, pansies, cabbages and ornamental peppers when combined with pumpkins, gourds and bales of hay.

Create a spectacular vignette in your landscape with bales of hay, a scarecrow or two, multiple sizes of pumpkins

and gourds, pots of garden mums, corn stalks and for more texture consider adding old tools, a set of antlers or bird-

houses. The autumn color palette offers a myriad of wonderful colors from which to choose; purples, rusts, gold’s,

yellows, oranges, deep greens and browns can be used. Simply displaying a “pile” of pumpkins in the same color

palette and different sizes will draw ones eye and interest to an area of your landscape. Fill a favorite basket or pot

with a mixture of produce for a simple, impressive look. Add a bit of nature into your containers with branches, corn

husks, berries and other materials to enhance the overall look.

If you did not apply a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn in September; apply it by the first two weeks of October.

You should also fertilize your St. Augustine or Bermuda lawns no later than the first week of October.

October is bulb buying month. They are in fresh supply and will provide welcome late winter and early spring color

for the landscape.

The October 1st Deadline To Replace Your Dead Tree Or

Missing Tree Or Shrub Is Here!

Remember To Plant The Correct Size Tree For Your Lot and the Approved

Type Of Tree.

See The Community Website For Approved Tree Type: www.Heartlandtx.net

If You Plant A Tree That Is Too Small, You Will Be Required To Remove It and

Plant The Correct Size.

Be Sure To Give Your New Tree/Shrub Plenty Of Water So That It Will Survive

The Winter.

Make sure that you accompany your children

on their trick-or-treat route.

Visit houses that are well lit and never enter a

stranger's home.

Insist that treats be brought home for inspection

before anything is eaten.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Always carry a spare bag just in case your

breaks.

Pin a slip of paper with the child's name; ad-

dress and phone number inside a pocket in

case the youngster gets separated from the

group.

Try to use face make up instead of a

mask. Masks can obstruct your child’s vision.

Wear reflective tape, comfortable shoes.

Carrying flashlights will help children see better

and be seen more clearly.

Walk; do not run, from house to house.

Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.

Say Trick or Trick! And Thank You!

Normally lights off means the homeowner is not

participating.

Participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project- Pro-

vide non-food treats for trick-or-treaters and

paint a pumpkin teal to place in front of your

home. Examples of non-food treats: glow

sticks/necklaces, erasers, pencils, stickers and

other novelty toys. Fore more information about

the Teal Pumpkin Project, please visit their

website at http://www.foodallergy.org/teal-

pumpkin-project.

SEPTEMBER YARDS OF THE MONTH! Thank you, Heartland Residents for your Nominations for the Yard of the Month, Sponsored by

Calloway’s Nursery in Mesquite. The Beautification Committee really appreciates your continued support. The members of the Resident Advisory Committee and one resident guest were able to view

the homes and present to you the finalist in no particular order.

2117 Brenham Dr.

Home to new residents, the Rowley's. Patricia "encourages" hubby Dan to plant TEXAS native plants for the less demand of water ... They also prefer to plant per-ennials that come back year after year. They chose to re-furbish a few yard art pieces from their 14-year Greenville farm to incorporate in their patriotic red/white/blue flower beds which sets it all off beautifully! The Rowley's daugh-ter is even thinking about moving from Garland to Heart-land ... It says a lot about our great community when other family members want to move here too!

3117 Buckthorn St.

Located at the corner of Trumpet Vine. Relocating from Uptown to Heartland is a real new-life adven-ture for these new residents since March! You can tell they love their new home by how the plantings complement the aesthetics of the stone, fence and mulch. It all comes together with a welcome flag out front that beacons all to stop by for a chat. You might also catch them outside walking their little dog or mowing the yard every SAT AM ...

4108 Sandalwood Ct

The Lastinger family located from FT Worth to Heartland. This young family enjoys the family-friendly atmosphere of Heartland and can hardly wait for all of the new amenities to open that will be in close walking distance. Ashley shared her secret to keeping the whiskey barrel planter light weight by putting in cut up pool noodles in the bottom before filling with dirt and her annual flow-er "pops of color". They have a very pretty fall wreath on the front door crafted by Ashley, while Brent shares the love of his alma mater by displaying his Georgia Bulk dog flag. They top off the beautifully "free of weeds" mowed yard with a TEXAS star in the way to their front door. When you see these folks out, give them a Howdy for a job well done!
