75th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Friday, October 20, 6:30pm - Dinner and Silent Auction in the Fellowship Hall
Sunday, October 22, 10:30am - Worship Service with Communion and Special Music
Guest Preacher Rev. Dr. Susan DeWyngaert Reception in the Fellowship Hall following Worship.
You can donate your talent to the 75th Anniversary Dinner. Can you play an instrument, sing, act, read aloud? Then consider donating your talent during the evening’s festivities. Performers of all ages are needed throughout
the evening. There will be time for our more shy performers and also time for our real Selwyn divas. All interested performing artists should contact Eric Winkenwerder, [email protected] or 704-408-3517.
For the silent auction, if you own a business or a vacation home, provide a service, bake, create art or jewelry,
or have other items to contribute (or can reach out to a nonmember who would like to contribute), please email Mai-Lis Bahr, [email protected].
Your donation is greatly appreciated; all proceeds will go towards mission initiatives.
WHO ARE RHESA AND EVALYN “PETE” PURNELL?
The Purnells joined Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1980. They were a dignified, devoted, faithful couple. They were good financial stewards and especially loved worship here at Selwyn.
“Pete” was active with Presbyterian Women and her Circle. Rhesa died in 2003 and “Pete” in 2015. The church is the recipient of their extensive collection of
sterling silver and silverplate hollowware. At the 75th Anniversary Celebration Dinner these beautiful pieces of silver will be included in the silent auction.
Selwyn has been blessed throughout its 75 years by loving, generous members such as the Purnells.
We are truly grateful.

SELWYN'S NEW ORGANIST IS GAY PAPPIN
Gay grew up in Arkansas and graduated from Ouchita Baptist University with a degree in music education, and later received a master's degree and doctorate in music from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Gay has played organ and piano in churches all of her youth and adult life, most recently in Charlotte at Quail Hollow Presbyterian Church and previously at the Christian Science congregation on Morehead. She is employed as
administrator at the Southern Park Music School on Park Road, where she previously taught piano and organ. Active in the Charlotte chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Gay has held leadership positions including Dean and member of the Stigall Scholarship committee and registrar for the
2015 Regional Conference. Her husband is Joe Pappin, a retired professor of philosophy and formerly dean of the Lancaster campus of the University of South Carolina. They have two adult children and are also grandparents.
We are grateful to the Search Committee members who have worked long hours through the summer-- Joe Anne Cole, Dianne Cordell, Ellen Harris, Jackie Salinas, Ed Thomas, Bruce Walker, and Mary Ward, along with staff Rush Otey and Fred Spano.

COME JOIN SELWYN’S HABITAT DAY ON OCTOBER 7 AND HABITAT LUNCH ON OCTOBER 8
On Saturday, childcare is available in the morning for children 0 - 4. Camp Habitat is available in the afternoon for children 4 - 12. Are you looking for ways for your child to learn the value of helping others?
While you’re at the Habitat site or volunteering at ReStore, send your kids to Camp Habitat. We’ll be hammering and constructing to get a feel for what the Habitat volunteers are doing onsite, baking, designing, sewing and crafting all to understand more about Habitat for Humanity. Hands-on, exciting activities will keep kids engaged while doing things for someone else. They’ll spend the afternoon rotating through four exploratory centers and learning and playing together.
Adults and youth can help on the construction site or at the ReStore. Sign up through www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e49aba723a20-selwyn4 or follow the link on Selwyn’s website.

CHOIR RETREAT
The Chancel Choir is having its annual retreat on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Our gracious hosts, once again, will be Joe Anne and Bob Cole, and we will be focusing on our Advent music. If you are interested in singing in the choir for the special Advent service or just want to come and join us for the day, please do. This year we are singing Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi at the December 10 service. Please come and sing with us, and have lunch, too. The rehearsal begins at 10am and will end by 3pm, with a lunch break for fellowship. Please contact any choir member or Fred Spano ([email protected]) for more information.
75th ANNIVERSARY MUSIC GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
Anniversary Handbells: The handbell choir is completing its upper octave of bells with the purchase of five bells that have been sorely missing. Each bell costs $220 plus cost of the case and mallets. The Callaghan Family purchased the original 3-octave bell set, and other bells have been donated in honor of other members at Selwyn, handsomely noted in the handle of the bell. If you would like to donate a bell, or contribute to the cost of our handbells, please send your donation to Tonya or to Fred (indicate in your check memo "for new handbells"). Each member that donates a bell will be recognized on the bell, inside the handle, and in the next Spire/Church Notes. The total cost of the bells, case, and mallets is $1300.
Music Scholarship Fund: Thank you to those who have contributed to the music scholarship fund to maintain a paid singer in our choir. This position is extremely important in the musical worship of the church. I hope that the generosity of the congregation will continue.
CALENDAR
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND FORMATION
A Taste of Night and Day! Creation Tag! The Birds of the Air! Oh My!
Our Sunday School theme for October 8 through November 5 is Creation!
Children will get a taste of night and day by making (and tasting) cookies for our Child Development Center teachers; learn the days of creation by
playing creation tag; consider the birds of the air by building bird houses; discover how deep and wide the love of God is by going on a creation hunt; and recognize that just as God created the creatures to care for us, God also created us to take care of the creatures by making dog biscuits for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Shelter.
Throughout the month of October, consider donating any of the following items for the Humane Society of Charlotte: paper towels, six foot standard dog leashes, Fancy Feast Classic Pate Formula for cats, food puzzles for cats and/or dogs, and expo markers. You may bring your offering to Sunday school any Sunday in October. We will gather and sort our offerings on Sunday, November 5 and I will take it to the Charlotte Humane Society.
Habitat for Humanity will be our running theme. Each Sunday, we will be writing or drawing our “new-home prayers” on a piece of drywall for our Habitat home; and writing or drawing notes of encouragement for our Habitat family.
And if all that wasn’t enough, we will be learning a song to sing in worship throughout the month of October.
Blessings on each of you,
Kim
Making bread for World Communion Day.
STEWARDSHIP AT SELWYN: A DISCIPLES CALL TO CARE AND COMMIT
Stewardship season is upon us. The stewardship committee asks that you save the date for Dedication Sunday on November 5.
Be on the lookout for more information about the campaign throughout the month of October as we explore our call to discipleship demonstrated through our care and commitment to the community at Selwyn Avenue and beyond.

YOUTH NEWS Hello SAPC Family! We can’t believe that summer has already come to a close. As we slide into Fall, we are looking forward to what’s in store for our youth. Please keep an eye on your email as we have a few items coming up in the near future. SAPC’s 75th Anniversary is of particular interest, along with the family-friendly Habitat Build Day. Looking to the end of October, the youth will be involved in the CDC’s Fall Festival by creating and running the game stations. All Selwyn members are invited and proceeds go directly to our CDC! A special thanks to all the volunteers that have helped coordinate our Fall programming, Session members supporting our efforts, and the Sunday Dinner crew. We thank God for you! Jay
