Please keep Jan Fausset and her mother, Tricia in your prayers as Tricia transitions into new life. As announced on Sunday, Tricia went into a coma this past weekend. She came out of her coma briefly, however, she has stopped eating. Jan will be flying out on tomorrow to be with her in her last days.

I would like to ask for prayers for my neighbor Glenn Bugay. Last Monday Sept. 17 he was riding his bike to work and was struck by a hit-and-run driver at 112th and Pecos. (It may have been in the news). He is in the hospital with many broken bones and possible brain injury, and last we heard, still unconscious. Please pray for his healing, his family, and for the driver's reconciliation. Thank you to all and for previous prayers on my behalf.

Upcoming Events Fall Study 2018

Jesus Before the Gospels Monday nights Sept. 24th to Nov. 12th from 7-8:30 PM

(skipping 10/1 due to BRONCOS game)

The class will be discussing Bart Ehrman’s book, Jesus Before the Gospels

Throughout much of human history, our most important stories were passed down orally—including the stories about Jesus before they became written down in the Gospels. In this fascinating and deeply researched work, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Erhman investigates the role oral history has played in the New Testament—how the telling of these stories not only spread Jesus’ message but helped shape it.

A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology and anthropology, to examine the role of memory in the creation of the Gospels. Explaining how oral tradition evolves based on the latest scientific research, he demonstrates how the act of telling and retelling impacts the story, the storyteller, and the listener—crucial insights that challenge our typical historical understanding of the silent period between when Jesus lived and died and when his stories began to be written down.

Disclaimer (warning): The book is well written and easy to read, but the subject matter is very challenging and faith changing.

Please have the first weeks reading done before class. Week 1: Introduction & Oral Traditions and Oral Inventions Week 2 The History of Invention Week 3 Eyewitness Testimonies and Our Surviving Gospels Week 4 Distorted Memories and the Death of Jesus Week 5 Distorted Memories and the Life of Jesus Week 6 Collective Memory: Our Earliest Gospel of Mark Week 7 The Kaleidoscopic Memories of Jesus & Conclusion

Please sign up at the Welcome Table or RSVP to Pastor Greg or Pastor Michael.

Did you Know - October 2018

Hello from your Members at Large:

The All Joy Group luncheon was very successful and well attended. For some of us who no longer had a group, Jane Shelton has been hard at work organizing a new group or two. Now that summer is ending, we will be looking forward to getting together, getting to know each other and enjoying each other's company. Thank You Jane for all the work

you put into this effort.

Did you know that our own Jean Markel participated in "Dancing with the Broomfield Stars" on September 20th with proceeds going to Broomfield Community Foundation. Not only did she participate, she WON!! We now have a "STAR" among us. Congratulations Jean (you go girl) and blessings for all you do for the community.

I don't know if any of you have noticed on Facebook, but due to very disappointing and unforeseen circumstances, we are once again looking for a new Director for our Kohl Street Kids Preschool & Before/After School Program. Thank you Gary McKee for posting this opening on Facebook and other sites. Plus, a huge thank you to Nancy McKee and Pastor Michael who have graciously accepted the challenge of stepping in to keep the program running until we can find a new person to fill the position. So, if

any of you know of a certified individual who may be interested in this position, please let them know we are looking. Another thank you to the dedicated teachers and staff who are carrying on with teaching and taking excellent care of the kiddo's during this transition. Additionally, if you know of anyone looking for an excellent preschool and/or before/after school care, let them know we are always looking for additional students. Taken from a posting by one of the mothers on Google Business, KSK is “one of Broomfield's Best Kept Secrets” and she wants other parents to know we exist and encourages them to take advantage of our program and reasonable prices.

Our sympathy to Jan Faussett as her mother passed into new life on Saturday, Sept. 15th. She was able to be with her mother as she passed. On the other side of "The Circle of Life" as stated by Jan, she is awaiting the arrival, any time now, of a new grandchild. So, with sadness on one side, joy will appear on the other. Please keep Jan in your prayers as her bag is packed and she is awaiting the call to help with her

granddaughter while Mom and Dad are busy delivering the new baby.

Our participation in the Broomfield Days was well attended and successful. Thank you to everyone who marched and let people know who we are and what we do for the community. By the way, we were able wear the new t-shirts with our new logo. Signs telling of all of our activities were carried so people were able to see the faces of Broomfield's United Church of Christ.

Those who have been to FISH tell us that our shelf is very popular, which also makes it constantly in need and often sparse. It isn't that we aren't generous enough with our donations, it just means that these items are not available with food stamps making it a

much needed shelf of items. Thank you for your generous donations. We are hoping that perhaps we can co-sponsor this shelf with another church or two making personal items [soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes] more accessible and plentiful to those in need.

The Mission Committee is letting us know that on November 10th we will be collecting food for Thanksgiving in support of Henderson UCC. Please mark your calendars and give what you can to make someone less fortunate have a better Thanksgiving meal..

Don't forget about the Craft Fair we will be holding on November 17th and 18th. We hope you will participate with your goods and don't forget to tell your crafty friends, too. Tables are available and we hope to have a good turnout with as many vendors as possible. To reintroduce this event, the cost of the tables will be a few personal items for our shelf at FISH. Contact Carol Bliss or Emily Joo to let us know

you would like to have a table.

I hope your September was good as we move into Fall.

Respectfully - Your Members at Large, Jan Faussett @ [email protected] and Carol Bliss @ 303-953-2767 or [email protected]. (We are here for you should you have any questions or concerns.)

for Michael and for our Christian Education team and which will strengthen our youth and family programming.

Also very exciting: we rolled out a new logo and web page. If you haven’t had an opportunity to do so, please check both out at broomfielducc.org. The new logo and tag line really reflect who we are as a church. The tree, with its subtle nod to the trinity and the cross, suggests life, growth, and rootedness, a theme made more explicit with our tag line: “#rooted: rooted in love, rooted in faith, rooted in community.” Thanks to the folks who have worked so hard to make this possible, especially Corey Hill and Matt Davis.

This is your church, so if you have any questions and concerns, please let me, one of our pastors, or a member of council know. If you haven’t already done so, I hope you will participate in something that will help you feel “rooted”: check out our calendar for upcoming events. And, of course there is worship and Sunday school for youth and adults every Sunday. See you soon!

Sacrifice

This gander truly lives up to the notion of a mental gander.

Almost all of us are Christians because that’s how we were brought up. And even if we didn’t grow up with religious training, we did grow up in a country where a great deal of our culture was affected by Christianity. So, being a Christian isn’t all that difficult. But why would a pagan in ancient Rome who had huge cultural, peer, and even governmental pressure, not to become a Christian do so; especially when their current religion seemed to be working so well?

Here’s something that might have had an effect.

The idea that Jesus died for our sins (was sacrificed) is really meaningless to us and hard for us to understand because we don’t live in a socio-religious environment that requires us to make sacrifices to the gods for our own good and the good the nation.

That was the case for the Jews of Jesus day and more importantly for the Romans.

The idea that Jesus died, was sacrificed for my sins, would have been a wonderful selling point for Romans who then would not need to spend their resources to sacrifice to the gods. It was already done for them by Jesus. This of course is also why Christians were seen as heretics and enemies of the state. The Romans believed that you had to sacrifice to the gods to keep them happy and mollified. Christians didn’t do this because Jesus was the sacrifice for all and the Romans saw this as a threat to the nation as such heresy would anger the gods.

It is easier for us to see that Jesus’s life and death were gifts—sacrifices-- for us, to us, from God. But since we really don’t have a pre-establish cultural expectation that we must make sacrifices to the gods; we really don’t have a full understanding of what that sacrifice meant to pagan Romans.

For us it is easy to see Jesus life and death as a gift from Jesus revealing the depths of God’s love. But if you decided that Jesus’s gift is not important to you, you’re not going to feel an overwhelming pressure to start making sacrifices to the gods in order to secure your and the nation’s prosperity.

That being said, I am very grateful for Jesus’s sacrifice, for all that he gave us.
