50th Anniversary
Celebration Recital
with Gordon Turk!
On Sunday, October 21 at 4:00 p.m., organist Gordon Turk will perform "Fisk Organ Fiftieth" in our sanctuary. Renowned for his improvisational skills (where he makes up a complex piece on the spot, based on melodic fragments given to him by the audience), Dr. Turk will provide a varied program highlighting the tonal beauty of Zion's Fisk Organ. Having performed here twice before, he has stated he loves playing Zion's organ because it is so perfectly suited for the room and he praises the architect and organ builder for designing such a perfect acoustical match. Dr. Turk is the recipient of numerous awards and is internationally recognized for his impressive technique. This will be a recital not to miss!
There is no admission fee for the recital; however, a free will offering will be collected at the door at the end of the program. There will be a reception in Fellowship Hall following the program and all are invited.

Making Advent Meaningful
Special Advent activity for moms, mom-moms, and even dads
Have you ever wondered how you might make Advent a little more deliberately Christian and a little less consumer-oriented for your family?
Join me in Fellowship Hall on Saturday morning, Oct 20 at 10:00 am to create a simple advent calendar for your family. We’ll have the supplies to put together a fun pocket calendar with ideas for each day to help your family enjoy the real meaning of the season. Zion will provide materials. I will provide some ideas and you’ll pro-vide the creativity to make a daily calendar with simple family activities for each day through the season of Advent.
Don’t bring the kids, they’ll enjoy the surprise of pulling out ideas to implement each day during Advent. This is an activity for the adults who’ll organize their family festivities later in the season.
Sign up on the sheet outside Fellowship Hall. Or RSVP to Jenn Moyer in the office.

wall calendars and pocket planners for 2019 will be accepted (no spiral-bound calendars or calendars with provocative themes/pictures, and no pictures of young children). Also, NO Bibles, booklets, and devotional books will be allowed. Drop your calendars in the box in the office. Thanks to you we will be donating 359 pairs of shoes to Soles 4 Souls this year. We thank you also for your help in tying or rubber banding the shoes. That helped us immensely by saving time and allowing us to just bag and count. Our collection is just in time as Soles 4 Souls is preparing a response effort for those affected by tropical storm Florence. As
we know from the news there are a lot of people that have lost everything except the clothes on their back. All usable shoes will be given to those in need. Only those totally unusable will be ground up and properly disposed of.
Thanks again for your generous donations!

Providing weekly food bags
to children in the Souderton Area School
District.
E.M. Crouthamel Elementary School is only a few blocks away from Zion with 378 students in attendance. Almost 50% (188) of these students live in a low income household. Low income leads to food insecurity.
Food insecurity is the lack of access to enough affordable, healthy food.
Insufficient healthy foods can lead to developmental delays, mental health problems and poor education outcomes.
YOU can make a difference. Please pray for: Funds to support the program The health and well being of each child receiving a back pack School staff distributing and directly connecting with the

ZION’S ANNUAL GOLF OUTING HAS A WINNER!
Congratulations to the Godshall Group!
Despite having to be rescheduled from June, we had a
good turnout of golfers for our annual golf outing. We had 25 people, including 2 women, join us at the Butter Valley Golf Port. The golfers enjoyed a delicious lunch
following the outing. Thank you to all who participated and helped with the outing! It is always a fun time to get together. Congratulations to Glenn and Justin Godshall
and Mark Watkins for being the 2018 Zion Golf Outing Winners!
If you think it is hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.

Table of Plenty Talk
Moving? Downsizing? See Double?
The next time you may be cleaning the garage, using your work bench or simply going into your shed, think of Zion. Zion may be able to use some tools or storage cabinets you may no longer need. If you have multiple this or I’ll never use that again, please think about donating them to Church. Examples of tools that are still in good shape, that could be donated would be electrical, carpentry, basic hand tools, automotive as well as outdoor landscaping tools. If you have something you think may be of use
at church, please speak with Mike Landis.
Table of Plenty finished out summer with plenty of patrons thankful for the cool place to enjoy a delicious meal. The rain and sun allowed us to serve folks extra produce from volunteers’ gardens and patrons were also treated to eggs from members of the congregation. What good fortune to share our abundance with the community.
As we look ahead to fall, I am excited to note a few new names on my volunteer sheet. It is heartwarming to see Zion's enthusiasm for this ministry growing!
TOP is still in need of a temporary lead for Wednesdays (from October-December). Shopping will be done for you; the position would include delegating and overseeing duties in the kitchen as well as communicating the shopping needs for Friday. Please see Katie if you are interested! Thank you for your support of Table of Plenty!

September Church Board Highlights
Rod Kratz, as Ministry Representative for Congregational Care,
shared about all the activities and programs of that particular ministry group.
Board Approved the creation of a Spiritual Council. Nominations for four Spiritual Council members will be solicited from the congregation, reviewed by the Gift Discernment Committee, further processed along with the potential candidates, the pastors, board officers, and then affirmed by the congregation at the Congregational Annual Meeting in January, 2019.
A one time stipend was approved for the work performed by the Youth Advisors.
The Front Street property was discussed as possible office space for Keystone Opportunity Center instead of as a day center. This was a request of Keystone. Estimates will be secured to determine the cost of lead remediation before Keystone can continue to use the building.

At this time, work on the house in Clendenin is progressing. All framing, doors and windows are installed, the electric is in and plumbing is ongoing. Mother Nature has taught her lesson and the home is being constructed on higher ground on the Rucker homestead. A special thanks to the Zion members who gave a Saturday or two to come out and help and maybe learn a bit about MDS. If you’d like to view a video about the Ruckers, it is on YouTube. Search MDS Ruckers or use the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5HKdPTGpxQ

Anna and Jerry Rucker of Clendenin, West Virginia sat on the porch and watched the storm. In their many years of living along the banks of the Elk River, they’d seen the rains fall and the river rise many times before... but nev-er like this. On June 23, 2016, flash floods rose to levels not seen since 1888. With no time to spare, the Ruckers scrambled across the country road to higher ground, but rising water destroyed their home. Enter Mennonite Disaster Service. Headquartered in Lititz, Pa. MDS Rep Larry Stoner reached out to the eastern regional churches, including Zion, to see if they’d be interested in helping to replace the Ruckers’ home through the Partnership Home Project. The regional committee approved the project, Keith and Dottie Freed of Souderton Mennonite agreed to be the local coordinators, and planning began. The idea behind the Partnership Home Project is to allow volunteers to work locally to pre-fabricate the walls and flooring before being sent in sections to the eventual home site. It is meant to allow those who can’t get away for a week of travel to volunteer on a weekend where they live. It also exposes those volunteers to the work that MDS does and maybe sparks a flame for future volunteer projects. So, with a thumbs up from Souderton Mennonite to be the location, area churches went to work. On Saturday, June 30, skilled framers and lay workers from Zion, Souderton, Indian Valley, Swamp, Perkiomenville, Ambler, and Butter Valley Mennonite churches came together in Souderton’s parking lot and work began. Within 2 weeks, all the layout, flooring and framing was completed. Then, on the third Saturday of work, all the walls were labeled and taken apart to be loaded on a flatbed truck for delivery in Clendenin. This day also included a couple hours of volunteer time from a local resident who knew his way around a forklift and eased the process of getting the sections to the flatbed. The Ruckers themselves were on site July 7. They drove up to share with the volunteers, pose for pictures with the group, and mostly to express their gratitude for what the Lord, through MDS was doing for them.

People use the term hope all the time. Students “hope” they do well on their tests. We “hope” the policeman we speed by on the interstate doesn’t pull out and fall in behind us with his lights on. Folks buy lottery tickets and “hope” they have the winner. As Christians we are supposed to have hope. What is the difference between the “hope” we hear people talking about in everyday conversation and the hope we hear about in church? Should we hope for things we don’t expect to receive or see? Join us for the adult Bible study at the Gatherings on Tuesdays beginning October 2 as we discuss hope. We’ll utilize Old Testament scripture in the Book of Daniel, the Gospel in Luke, and 1 and 2 Peter.
