Join area ELCA churches as we work together this fall as we celebrate, God’s Work Our Hands. Each church will be the host of one activity. Zion will be making cards of thanks for veterans and have guest speaker, Chris Reder, from the “Don’t Tread On Me Foundation.” Good Shepherd will be packing kits of all kinds for Lutheran World Relief. Bethlehem will be partnering with Bethesda Home for an intergeneration worship and activity. Those volunteering are encouraged to wear their God’s Work Our Hands shirt, or one of the Thrivent shirts. Bethlehem. We have had a
rich six years of partnership
together - practicing faith,
singing songs filled with hope and purpose, and sharing in
conversations that help us bear one another’s burdens and
celebrate our joy. Please know I will keep you in prayer as I
begin a new call at your sister church along the Missouri
River, Lutheran Memorial in Pierre. We who love our rivers
and our prairies are drawn to them. The Holy Spirit knows
this, and she sends us to them as we keep leaning into the
work of shared ministry. May you be mindful of God’s call
in your own daily life. Thank you for being a blessing to
me. God’s peace be with you all.

Precious People of Bethlehem, We all have our routines: from what we do each morning, to where we shop, to what we eat and drink. These practices shape our lives. They impact our personal health and interpersonal relationships. As Lutheran Christians, we believe that in our Baptism God publicly proclaims his love for us and promises us grace and guidance. We believe that we are called to respond by intentionally living in this relationship with God. We are called to “continue in the covenant God makes with us in Holy Baptism” with routines:
live among God’s faithful people, hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and strive for justice and peace in all the earth
These practices are rooted in Jesus. In the gospels, we see Jesus doing these routines and as followers, we do them as well. I invite you to reflect on your routines, and to consider how the Spirit may be stirring you to adjust or grow. I look forward to sharing in these practices with you when we are gathered together at Bethlehem and scattered out in the community and countryside. Gratefully,

Serve on a Church Team
Do you know someone with gifts for leadership in the church? We’re currently seeking applicants and nominations to serve on our elected leadership teams next year. Are you interested in serving? Do you know someone who would be excellent in these roles? Every year our Nominating Committee recommends a slate of candidates to serve on our Ministry Teams, Resource Teams and our committees. If you know someone you think we should contact about serving, or if you are willing to be personally considered, please let us know. DivorceCare & DivorceCare for kids will begin Sunday, November 3rd
from 4:00-5:30
This small group ministry is open to anyone who is going through or has experienced divorce. Divorce Care for kids will meet at the same time and is open to children, starting at age 5, of parents attending the adult Divorce Care session. Childcare is available for those younger than 5. Please contact Pr. Rhia with questions.

The school year is off to a fantastic start and we've been super busy in the classroom! During the month of September we've been learning about how to work together, make new friends, recognize and create patterns and we started our Letter of the Week study. We also visited the K.O. Lee Public Library and while many of the children have visited with their families it's always fun to go places with your friends too!
We are also partnering with the Primrose Assisted Living community and will be visiting them on a monthly basis for crafts and games. Both the children and the residents at Primrose love our visits!
Thank you to all who have and continue to contribute Kens and Kesslers receipts and Box Tops. The Pre-K earned just over $900 from your January – May 2019 receipts and Box Tops. This is a super simple way for us to bring in extra income! THANK YOU, and keep those receipts and Box Tops coming!!

Celebration of
Confirmation Sunday, October 27

keep the promises made at baptism.
Confirmation is a collection of faith
experiences for the head, heart and hands
of high schoolers at Bethlehem. All are
welcome to thank God and ask the
Holy Spirit to "stir up" a life of faith
in our 10th graders. Watch for their
faith projects in the Narthex that
weekend.
The Youth & Family Team will be selling wreaths, crosses and swags
again this year.
Proceeds will help fund the 2021 National Youth Gathering in
Minneapolis. Pre-order forms can be found at the church office.
Peer Ministry Leadership Training for 10th - 12th Grade Kids
will begin in January 2020
We’ll begin training a new group of High School Peer Ministers in January, 2020. Peer Ministry Leadership is Good Samaritan leadership. It’s a lifestyle of caring, welcoming and affirming everyone and is based on the Good Samaritan Story.
Jesus spent his whole life ministering to others through personal and trusted relationships. Jesus cared enough to make a difference in those lives by showing compassion, love, and honoring the worth and dignity of every human being. He crossed boundaries, took risks, took action. Jesus trained the first 12 Peer Ministers. We want to train YOU! Talk to Denny if you have questions.

Pastor Jeff on Nicaragua Pastoral Exchange Pastor Jeff, along with Pastor Charlie Bunk and Deacon Barbara Bunk, will be going to Nicaragua October 30th – November 6th to share in Bible study and worship, learning and fellowship. Pastor Jeff will be the guest preacher for All Saints Day worship at the central church in Managua. The three South Dakota ministers were able to meet with leaders from Nicaragua in September at the installation of Bishop Hagmaier. Please pray for our companion synod Iglesia Lutherana Fe y Esperanza (Lutheran Church of Faith & Hope of Nicaragua). Holy Land Trip 2020 Plans are being made for Bethlehem to host a trip to the Holy Land in late fall of 2020. Those interested please plan to attend a
quick meeting on Sunday, October 6th at noon in the Hub. We will be discussing possible dates, review the sites that will be
visited and have information available about the travel agency (Group Travel Directors). If this is something you might even be
slightly interested in, you are encouraged to attend. Contact Pr . Rhia for more information.
Bethlehem will again be sponsoring a Coat Drive. Clean coats of all sizes can
be dropped off at the church office beginning October 6.
The coats will be available to people
from October 20, 2019 through November 29, 2019. Any leftover
coats will be donated.

October Study & Share
Regular monthly Study and Share Bible study will be the second Saturday, October 12, at 9:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room.
The Bible study, from the “Gather” magazine, is session two of “No hard feelings?” The ache of grief considers how grief and lament can each be acts of faith and occasions for healing and uses scripture passages from Lamentations and several Psalms. There will be coffee and extra copies of the Bible study available. And a chair for YOU. Hope you can come!

Spark Joy...The Art and Joy of
Sisterhood: Finding Strength
through Connection Friday, October 18

of self-improvement that was first sparked by
author, motivational speaker and podcaster,
Rachel Hollis. Helen refers to the following
quote from Michelle Obama, which speaks to

“Let’s invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer
wrong assumptions, to let go of the biases
and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the
ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get
yourself in the end. There’s power in
allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using
your authentic voice. And there’s grace in
being willing to know and hear others.”

Tuesday Ladies The Tuesday Night Ladies will be starting their second study of The
Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis on October
15th. Although this is a children's book, Lewis's goal is to present us
with a variation of the Christian account and help the story of Jesus
come to life. As we read, we will compare different events from the
Bible with these in the book. If you would like to join this study,
you can get a book from Sandy Kleinknecht or the church office.
Men Wanting More
Many men are very busy, yet longing for more... more connection with God, more opportunity to think and talk about everyday life, more community. Each Tuesday over lunch an informal group of guys gather at Bethlehem. Together they talk about life, read a passage from the Bible, and talk about how it connects with them. No experience necessary. Any guys are welcome whenever they can make it. Bring your lunch if you'd like. Noon to 1:00 on Tuesdays in Conference Room 1. Contact Pr. Jeff with any questions.
Aging Gracefully A group gathering to celebrate faith, community and education.
Join with others the second Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in the East Fellowship Hall to gather, hear a good speaker and share fellowship (and awesome treats)! There is room for you!

President Jason Uttermark called the meeting to order. For devotions, Pr. Jeff led Dwelling in the Word reflecting on the Affirmation of Baptism faith practices. Joint Commission mem-bers shared their reflections on these practices in their lives as well as how this liturgy leads Bethlehem into the future. Deacon Kris Wollman shared a summary of her new call as well as her gratitude for the nearly 6 years of partnership with Bethlehem. The Joint Commission thanked her for her service in her call to Bethlehem and wished her well with her new call.
Joint Commission adopted a Continuing Resolution recommended by the Financial Resources Team regarding who is authorized to conduct day-to-day business: The following persons are authorized to sign checks and other documents on behalf of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the exception of contracts, deeds, and corporate instruments: Director of Administration, President of the Congregation, Secretary/Treasurer of the Congregation, and Commissioner of the Financial Resources Team.
Collaborating – Reports from each of the teams were shared including: EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM: Reminded Commissioners to be working on suggested nominees for elected leadership positions.
SAFETY & SECURITY TASK FORCE: Work continues on implementing the security infrastructure grant including: door control & monitoring system and telephone and intercom system.
FINANCIAL RESOURCES TEAM: Received a financial update.
HUMAN RESOURCES TEAM: Shared staffing updates.
PROPERTY RESOURCES TEAM: The south driveway loop island landscaping has been completed in thanks to an anonymous donor.
WELCOMING MINISTRY TEAM: They are looking for door greeters on Sunday mornings. It was requested that all teams consider if they would like to help in this way. This is a way to let others see who is on teams as there are name tags that identify them. The team will also be having a contest with NSU, Central and BLC members to submit entries to paint the entryway into the cry room to help people notice the location.
TEACHING MINISTRY TEAM: There are a few openings for teachers. The Book Fair will be in November.
YOUTH & FAMILY MINISTRY TEAM: Bridge 8 is still in need of a leader on Wednesdays. Trunk or Treat will be held in October.
PRE-K TEAM: There is 1 spot remaining in the Pre-K afternoon class.

Joint Commission Meeting Highlights September 17, 2019
Wednesday Evening Adult Education
Would you like to learn more about the Bible? Where does the Bible come from? What are all these different translations? Pull up a chair on Wednesday nights after worship as Adult Education will be discussing, “How Lutherans Interpret The Bible.” Mark Allen Powell, a Lutheran pastor and Bible professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary will lead us through these topics and more on a video series that will help us better understand our most sacred book. Wednesdays at 7:10 p.m. in the Hub. Contact Pr. Rhia with questions.
Sunday Morning Adult Education
What does this mean? This fall adult Sunday School is looking more closely at what it means to be Lutheran. Using Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, we will take a look at the foundations of our faith: the 10 Commandments, the Creed, and the sacraments. As we continue to learn what it means to practice our faith, we will dig deeper into these ancient practices. Sundays at 9:40 a.m. in the East Fellowship Hall. See Pr. Rhia with any questions.

Beginning the week of October 27, Adult Sunday School will begin a 4-part adult forum on death & dying called, Remembering God’s Promises. Topics covered include: end of life decisions, hospice care, funeral and burial planning and funeral and liturgy planning. In God’s promise, we remember that even at the grave we make our song!

MEET THE LEADERS OF BETHLEHEM Bobbi Anderson - Teaching Ministry Team
Have you served on any teams in years past at BLC? I have not served as a member of an elected team prior to the TMT. I am a member of an usher team, Home Communion Ministry, Altar Guild and recently became a Pastoral Care Minister.
Background: I grew up at Gwinner, North Dakota and moved to Aberdeen to practice Dental Hygiene after graduating from North Dakota State College of Science.
Family: I have a son, Kyle, who is a recent graduate from the University of Nebraska/Lincoln with a math degree.
Work: Currently, I am not working as I rehab from a work-related injury but hope to return to the dental field again
in the future. I practiced dental hygiene for 38 years prior to my injury.
Hobbies: I enjoy reading, movies, card making, baking and spending time with family and friends, both new and old.
How long have you been a member of BLC? I have been a member for about 35 years.
What brought you to Bethlehem? When I first moved to Aberdeen, I visited each Lutheran Church. Bethlehem felt the most like home, so I kept coming to worship when I was in town on the weekends. Don and Rosemary Reshetar asked me to join them for coffee often after church and invited me to join.
What keeps you at Bethlehem? I have to say that Bethlehem continues to feel like home. I have found opportunities to volunteer, groups and programs to be involved as a participant or leader no matter where I was in my personal or spiritual life. Probably more than anything though is the relationships that come from being part of this congregation. We are all on a journey and learn from each other as we go.
How have the ministries at BLC affected your life and your faith? The ministries of Bethlehem work toward fulfilling our mission of Welcoming, Worshiping, Teaching and Serving. The most important to me is Serving
because as you serve you welcome and teach others and by serving others you worship Jesus.
When Kyle was little, I felt it was important to bring him to worship and involve him in Christian education and teach him the importance of being a servant. Kyle was given the gift of attending camps and the National Youth Gathering as ways to grow in his faith. I also wanted him to have strong role models to emulate. I feel that Bethlehem is wonderful in providing an environment for all to grow in faith and community.
As for myself, I feel like I gain more for myself by being involved and participating in the ministries at Bethlehem than I have given. Tuesday Ladies has provided me with sisters and prayer warriors that challenge me to look deeper into faith as they share their faith and questions and help me to find answers to mine. I enjoy ushering and participating in worship as an assisting minister and serving communion, attending Friends and Fellowship, Spark Joy and Aging Gracefully. The relationships that develop through Home Communion Ministry hold a very special place in my heart. There is a ministry for all and if you don’t see one for you maybe you can help establish a new one, because if you see a need there is likely someone else that feels the same way!
How has your involvement with your team affected your perspective of this church and/or yourself? Bethlehem has amazing leadership! Our pastors, our staff and elected leadership have a genuine caring for all members and non-members alike. We are commissioned to love one another as we love ourselves, a work in progress. Some days I greatly need the love of others to love myself, likely you or others may feel the same way. Together, we need to be there for each other.
What is the biggest challenge placed before your team? Involvement by everyone is key! Bishop Constanze Hagmaier asks us to “show up”. For many this may feel like a natural thing to do, some need gentle nudging, and others may need to be led into involvement. Lives are very busy with day to day needs and expectations, each of us can find where we fit in and this can be challenging but may be the best fun we can have!
If you had to pick one current ministry at BLC you think instrumental for the future development of this church, what would that be? I feel Christian education is instrumental for Bethlehem at all ages. Learning in all aspects of life can allow for change and acceptance while preserving tradition. We can learn from scripture, sermons, hymns, testimonies, teaching but also from watching, joining in conversation at coffee or supper. We just need to look as the opportunity is here!

Audit Committee Review
The Audit Committee conducted an annual review of fiscal records and procedures of the 2018 records, completing their field work and testing on August 7, 2019.
The Committee reported that the financial records were accurate and procedures followed properly, in accordance with policy.

Landscaping Update
Thanks be to an anonymous donor with a passion for landscaping design, Bethlehem has been gifted with a beautiful new landscape near the front entrance of the church building.
This south entrance, near the main doors, is a primary focal point for
all persons entering the church, making this designated gift deeply appreciated.
