Morning Drop- off During the morning rush between 8:30 and 8:50, we have many cars and busses dropping students off at the school. In order to keep this as safe as possible, we are requesting that all drivers follow these instructions:

• Do not park anywhere in front of the school during this time. If you need to park while you run into the school for a few minutes, please pull into the staff parking lot, leaving a lane for busses to go around the school.• If dropping off students, pull in front of the main doors. Do not pass other vehicles. We have asked our bus drivers to follow this same rule; and they will wait behind a passenger vehicle until students have unloaded.• The speed limit is 30 km in the school area. Please slow down.

Afternoon Dismissal• Only bus students are dismissed at 3:15. All other students and staff are remaining inside the school until the busses have departed. This typically takes until 3:19. • Passenger vehicles can wait in front of the school building at the end of the day.• The speed limit is 30 km in the school area. Slow down.

Our Heating and Air Units All supplies are now on site for the replacement of our air handling units. We expect to have all units online and operational before Halloween. Classrooms will be on the cool side in the mornings, so please encourage students to dress warmly.

East Side Trailers

! Our Division carpenters will continue work on refurbishing these trailers, with an expected completion date in late November. We plan to use these trailers for our small engine courses, welding, and graphic arts programs. The small engines course will be the first program to be on site.

SAFE Workers for Tomorrow A big thank you to the Wawanesa and area businesses/facilities who so willingly partnered with Wawanesa School and the SAFE Workers of Tomorrow in offering the “SAFE Workers of Tomorrow” practicum tours for Wawanesa School’s Grade 11’s. A sincere note of appreciation goes out to Norbert’s Manufacturing (Carlos Vanwynseberg), Cargill (Kelly Armitage), and Wawanesa Health Centre ( Earl Vidler/Kyle McDougall).

VolleyballGrade 7/8 Boys

Our 7/8 volleyball team played their first games last Monday. They had some very close sets with Killarney and Boissevain. We will now travel to both towns for league play the following Mondays. Our Zone tournament is on November 7 in Deloraine at 12:00 pm.

Grade 7/8 Girls The Gr. 7/8 Girls’ Volleyball team is already half way through their season and have showed great progress in their skills. The girls have improved in their serves, blocks and digs. In their home opener, they won two of the six sets. At their second game in Killarney, they won four out of the six sets. The girls travel to Killarney this Saturday, October 22nd for the Raiders’ Grade 7/8 Girls’ Tournament. Come out this weekend and cheer the girls on.

Varsity Boys The varsity boys have passed the midway point of the season and their play is steadily improving. They faced a tough test last week against Souris (ranked 2nd in ‘AA’ in Manitoba) and put in a solid performance, stealing a one set win before losing in a 3-1 loss. Any other team in the Zone would have had their hands full with the boys that night! The regular season is winding down with only one home game left against Boissevain on October 25 before playoffs start. The boys will be looking for revenge against Boissevain after dropping a match against them earlier this season. Playoff locations are still to be determined. We are hoping that we will finish high enough in the standings to host the ‘A’ provincial berth playdowns for Zone 9 on Nov. 8. Stay tuned for more details!

P. Friesen

Varsity Girls The varsity girls’ volleyball season has been flying by, and with only four league games left Wawanesa is currently ranked 5th in the East half of the zone. The girls suffered a loss this week to Killarney in three sets (25-21, 25-14, 25-12). The girls’ next match is in Sioux Valley on Thursday October 20th and their last varsity tournament of the season will be in Hamiota on October 28th and 29th. We hope to see you out to cheer on the girls in their last home game of the season on Tuesday October 25th vs. Boissevain!

Telescope Project The concrete is poured for the base of the telescope, walls are up and the floor is in place. Next step is the roof which must be removable. Henry Hanssen has been working hard on this project and we hope to have it up and running this fall!

Playground Equipment We are in the process of replacing and adding some equipment to the playground. At this time we have bought and installed new soccer goals. We also have tetherball poles on site waiting for installation, as well as a X-Wave for the playground. Grass has been seeded and we hope to get a good catch this fall.

Western Manitoba Youth Choir Wawanesa School was proud to host the Western Manitoba Youth Choir on Monday, October 17. We were very excited to see two of our students, Asia Oleson and Matthew Lahner, participating in this choir. The choir performed a wide variety of styles of music ranging from world music, to classical, to country, to folk, to pop, to Canadiana. The audience never knew what to expect next in terms of the choreography. It was a visual and auditory feast! Thank you to the members of the community of Wawanesa who opened up their homes in order to billet the group of sixty people. To staff and parents who donated food, we wish to express our sincere appreciation. Also a huge thank you to the committee who helped to organize the billets and meal, namely Brenda Boyd, Stephanie Emberly, Craig Vint, Emma Case, Tanner McDonald, Jan McDonald, Marge Hanssen, Christine Helgason, Charlene Henderson, Lucille Penner, Megan Ellis and Travis Marshall.

Library News Our Scholastic Book Fair has been a huge success. We must once again thank everyone who attended the fair. Without your support, we would not be able to have so many wonderful books in our library. The total for this Fair was $2079.00. The winner of the parent evening draw was Amber Sullivan and Mrs. McKinnon’s Grade 5 class. They each receive $25 in books. Door prizes have been delivered to the winners. I would also like to thank the people who made the goodies, and Michele and Patrick Day for their help on the Books and Brownie evening.
