    Dear Parent,During the 20102011 school year, all students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, andtake the Online Hawaii State Reading and Mathematics Assessments. In additionstudents in grades 4, 8, and 10 will take the Online Hawaii State ScienceAssessment. Your child will take the assessments during the school year. We willinform you of the specific dates for each assessment. The purposes of the Haw

    State Assessment (HSA) are to (1) meet or exceed the requirements of NCLB(2001), Chapter 302A of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, and Hawaii Board ofEducation Policy 2520Statewide Assessment Program, (2) promote and measurethe attainment of the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS) inreading, mathematics, and science, (3) provide information to stakeholders aboutthe achievement of students, schools, complex areas and the state relative to theHCPS, and (4) support instructional program improvement efforts. Moreinformation about the HSA can be found atwww.alohahsa.org.

    The Department of Education requires students to participate in the assessments.If you wish to request that your child be excused from the assessments, pleasesubmit a letter to the school principal that states the reasons. A copy of your lewill be forwarded to the Systems Accountability Office, Student AssessmentSection, where your request will be reviewed for approval.

    On Thursday, November 4 our middle school and high school

    environmental club members will be visiting Waimea Valley. Students willlearn about the Hawaiian ahupua a system and resource management,native Hawaiian plants and their cultural uses, and endangered speciesliving in the valley. In addition, we will be doing volunteer work with thecaretakers of Waimea Valley. Work may include garden, nursery, and trailmaintenance, pond and stream clearing, and/or invasive species removal.New members are welcome. Please contact Mr. Gasda (grades 9-12) orMr. Zitello grades (7-8) for more information information.

    HTA ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB BEACH CLEAN UP ATPOKAI BAY

    On Thursday, September 30 our middle and high school environmental club members went tPokai bay to do volunteer work by picking up rubbish around the beach. We filled up aboubig black trash bags full of disgusting things like dirty socks, food wrappers, glass, bottles,cigarettes, and plastic wrappers. All these things that we found are hurtful for ourenvironment. While we were cleaning up the area we were approached by a lady whowanted to give our school money for our service to the community. After a long day of gowork, we cooled off for a swim, with a special thanks to Uncle George for letting us usestand up paddle boards! After our swim we cooked up some burgers and hotdogs, courtesyHTA...yum! If you are interested in joining our fun for everyone environmental club pleasecontact Mr. Gasda (high school students) or Mr. Zitello (middle school students). Our nextenvironmental club trip will be to Waimea Valley on November 4th!! New memberswelcome!!

    ChaperoneOn Monday at the LSB meeting theBoard approved the following policyand procedures regarding havingChaperones and Volunteers at HTA.

    Any and all persons who actthe capacity as a chaperoneor a volunteer for HTA mushave a clean backgroundcheck and Tuberculosis (TB

    test on file with HTA. The procedure is as follows: 1. The individual must complete the

    HTA Chaperone/VolunteerBackground Check AuthorizationForm (a copy is attached, but themay get them from the front deskat the Oahu LC).

    2. The individual must submit a copof their TB clearance card (thismay come from their personal

    doctor or they can have it donefor free at any community healthclinic).

    3. Once both of these documentsare on file with the HTA personnofficer, the name of the individuawill be put on a list of approvedChaperone/Volunteers. This listwill be available for teachers.

    4. The individual is responsible forthe cost of the background check(about $18). However, any personacting as a chaperone orvolunteer on 3 or more occasionswithin a school year will bereimbursed for the cost of thebackground check by HTA.
