A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

October 22, 2017

From 1968-1970, I taught at my High School Alma Mater Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. I taught Juniors American Literature. I remember one class of predominantly lineman for our football team. They were nice young men but not the brightest bulbs in the pack. We were studying a poem whose authorship was anonymous. One lineman raised his hand and asked, “Who’s this Anonymous guy?” I didn’t know whether he was serious or not so I made up an exaggerated explanation of the most famous literary family in French history—the Anonymous (pronounced A-non-a-moo) family. He believed my deceitful response and passed it on to his Jesuit Latin teacher that afternoon.

Questions are very important in our written and spoken language. There are different types of questions. For example, a closed question invites a short, focused answer. They are easy to answer and usually require a “yes” or “no” response. Do you like Brussel Sprouts? You either do or you don’t. That is a closed question. Open questions allow for longer responses and therefore more creativity and information. How do you find your associates at work? What’s your impression of the new Pastoral Associate? What would be your top three priorities, if you were given this job? These are examples of open questions. Two very different types of questions are asked in this weekend’s gospel. The Pharisees and Herodians, who usually don’t have much to do with one another, join forces to trap Jesus with a loaded question. They ask him, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” How is this a loaded question? If Jesus says, “Don’t pay the tax!” He will be arrested by the Romans for sedition. If Jesus says, “Yes, pay the tax!” He will lose his popular following. We know Jesus does neither since he is not arrested and doesn’t lose his popular following at the end of this encounter. In response to the deceitful question asked of him, Jesus responds with a genuine question of his own. It is that question that touched both my mind and my heart this week. Jesus asks to see the special coin that is used to pay the tax and asks, “Whose likeness is on it?” The coin used to pay the tax had Caesar’s image on it. So, treat it with the respect it is due and give it, when required, to the State/Emperor. But there is another part to Jesus’ question implied in the one he asks these deceitful religious leaders. “Whose image is on each and every one of you?” The Baltimore Catechism, echoing the first lines from the Book of Genesis, states that “Human beings were made in the image and likeness of God.” Consequently, we should treat every human being—whether they are like us or unlike us, whether they voted the way we did or voted another way, whether they believe in God or don’t, whether they stand or kneel during the playing of the National Anthem before athletic contests—with the respect they are due as people who are made in God’s image and likeness. Oh, my goodness, that is a lot to take in. But that is what good questions, open questions can do. They call us to ponder or think deeply about them. And remember that these hypocrites prefaced their deceitful question with these words: “We know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion.” So Jesus’ honest and truthful response to their dishonest question is this: “Render un-to Caesar what is Caesar’s. And render unto God what is God’s.” Whether it is a discussion of patriotism or universal healthcare or the death penalty or the protection of the most vulnerable in our society, Jesus defines the attitudes and behaviors that will distinguish his genuine followers.

DOCUMENTARY ON GROUNDBREAKING MONK TO BE SHOWN IN SACRAMENTO

A “The Many Stories and Last Days of Thomas Merton” has been broadcast on PBS stations across the United States over the last two years. It is the story of Merton in the last year of life, embarking on his greatest journey. It’s a tale of adventure and search that takes the viewer from Merton’s home at the Abbey of Gethsemani, across America in the turbulent year of 1968 and finally to Asia to meet with the Dalai Lama as well as other spiritual seekers. Merton believed that serving as a bridge between West an East was an essential part of his vocation as a

Catholic Monk. The one-hour program celebrates the triumph of all that was gained by his journey, reflects on the tragedy of what was lost with his premature death and considers why Merton’s life and work still challenges us today. In a 2015 address to the United States Congress, Pope Francis cited Merton as well as Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln as Americans he most admired. This documentary vividly conveys why Merton would be placed in this company.

1 hour free showing, Monday, November 6th at 7:00 pm

Filmmaker Morgan C. Atkinson will be on hand afterwards to share thoughts and answer questions

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral 2620 Capitol Avenue

Introducing Family Promise

Help St. Ignatius assist families in need — Volunteer. Family Promise is a program hosted by religious congregations in Sacramento for families experiencing crisis homelessness. A host church or congregation agrees to provide housing and meals for up to four families at their church for a week. The Family Promise organization then provides transportation to schools and work or training for work. It also provides other services to assist the family. A family stays in the program moving from church to church for enough time to get back on their feet and save enough money to enable it to move back into housing. St. Ignatius would like to be a support parish to the congregations that are actually providing housing. This would mean that a group of volunteers from St. Ignatius would bring a meal to the facilities housing the families. Volunteers would prepare a designated portion of a dinner and bring it and share it with the families. They would have an opportunity to meet and get to know the families as well as some of the volunteers from the host congregation. If you are willing to volunteer, you can anticipate being asked to assist in this way around once every couple of months. St. Ignatius is expecting to assist the Unitarian Universalist Society and Fremont Presbyterian Church. The only requirement is a generous heart and the willingness to prepare and share a meal. Family Promise, although not large, has been successful in saving families from long-term homelessness. You can find out more details about Family Promise at http://sacfamilypromise.org. If you are interested in helping with this ministry please contact Patty or Joe Symkowick at [email protected] or [email protected]
