Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2017

Sunday in Ordinary Time – Some Musings “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” The gospel for this weekend admonishes us to

keep our priorities in order; putting God first and foremost in our daily lives and ensuring that we are open to His word. When we get up in the morning, our first priority ought to be our morning devotions but frequently, there are other things that take our attention. There’s breakfast to prepare; we need to rush into the shower to be ready to go for work; the lunches need to be packed and the morning goes and our prayer life is put off. Or we become so engrossed in worldly things that we miss those marvelous opportunities that come to us when God reveals Himself in so many small and wondrous ways. When I read the gospels and hear the subterfuge of the Scribes and Pharisees as they try to trap Jesus, I realize that very often we can do exactly the same thing. When we try to weasel our way out of doing our moral duty, when we try to find ways to excuse our poor behaviour, when we do all those little things that can come so easily when the task at hand is difficult, we’re exactly like the Scribes and Pharisees. We can easily point fingers at those in the gospel who do not recognize Jesus for what He truly is, but all too frequently, we do exactly the same thing. We try to trap Jesus and in doing so we further burden His cross. This gospel reading reminds us that we need to get our priorities straight. We need, at all times, to put God first in our lives. When we don’t do that we can find ourselves running in circles, never sure where to spend our time, never sure what the right thing to do is. It’s why we can become so stressed, so anxious, so worried. We need to remember the lilies of the field. Getting our priorities straight is not always easy; living as we do in a world that is constantly changing, we are inundated on so many sides with things meant to distract us, to entertain us, to keep us busy with the things of this world that we lose sight of what is really important. We lose family time, we lose time with friends, we lose ourselves in the hubbub of earthly duties. And most of all we lose time with God. Sitting in the stillness where our cell phones, our iPads, our laptops, are set aside, where we can spend time in prayer, in listening, in reading His word or the words of the wise, allows us time to refuel our depleted resources. It gives us time to set our priorities. I try to start and end each day with prayer and spiritual reading. I don’t always spend a lot of time but I do try to ensure that the time I spend is focused solely on my prayer. I find these moments calm an otherwise hurried spirit and allow me time to set my path along His way. I’ve watched the seasons slowly changing, the wind whipping leaves in a death spiral, the creatures scurrying to prepare for the onset of winter, and I realize that if I don’t take these precious moments, I become blown about by the winds of change and the world. I become uncentred and unfocused. I’m like a lost child. Let’s give to God the things that are His. And if we truly understand our God, everything is His. His mighty hand holds it all and we are blessed when we share the things He puts before us: the warm breeze, the majesty of oaks and willows, the tiny creatures that bless our world. I truly believe that if we knew how to look at life, all life would become prayer. Wishing you a week of many prayer filled moments and many small miracles. Betty Bruch

Reflection on our Gospel Reading

From today’s Isaiah reading: God says to God’s anointed, Cyrus...

"I have called you by name, Giving you a title, though you knew me not."

Reflection: Isaiah provides us with insight: God even uses non-believing humans to accomplish God’s will. We see God’s hand working through the gifts of others, "anointed" to do good. It is obvious that our God’s good actions are not restricted to a church building, or to any one faith community. God works outside the box too. So we ask ourselves:

From our Baptism we have been anointed.

To whom and where am I anointed by God to serve?

Do I see the hand of God in those doing good who have no explicit faith?

Bereavement Support Loving Creator…. We have heard the cries for justice and peace from all over the earth. We are moved to tears by the suffering and struggles of so many around the globe. We sense the dark clouds of war looming over us; we sit in the shadow of death. Grant us the grace to walk in righteousness. Draw us closer to you that our hearts and minds may discern the way of peace shown by your son, Jesus. For you alone have been our help in ages past, and you are our shelter and our hope in the years to come.

(Prayer for Peace; by Denise Colterman-Fox; October- Living with Christ; page 182)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) “Walking is one of my favorite words when I think about a Christian and about the Church. I think this is truly the most wonderful experience we can have; to belong to a people walking, journeying through history together with our Lord, who walks among us! We are not alone; we do not walk alone. We are part of the one flock of Christ that walks together. What can be more beautiful than this? I repeat often: walking with our people, sometimes in front, sometimes behind, and sometimes in the middle. We walk in front in order to guide the community, in the middle in order to encourage and support, and at the back so that no one lags too far behind, to keep them united. Here let us ask ourselves: How do we walk?”

(The Church of Mercy; by Pope Francis, pages 75 & 76, Loyola Press)

Fr. Eugene O’Reilly Father O’Reilly told the congregation back in November 2016 that when the DVD was finished he would send some down to Woodstock. They have arrived! “Reflections On The Ordinary” is filled with his talks, his music and a few of his jokes. Father uses music and beautiful scenic images to get his message out. A very inspiring DVD that I think you will enjoy as much as I have. The cost is $10. Please call Bunny at 519-421-2232 if you would like a copy.
