Defensive Notes The Cats have picked off a pass in three straight games.

Montana State’s fi rst three FCS op-ponents this season averaged 14.0 fi rst downs, 98.3 yards rushing, and 213 yards passing per game. The most recent three, all Big Sky opponents, average 20.3 fi rst downs, 185.3 rushing yards, and 208.0 passing yards per game. That amounts to 393.3 total yards per game.

Texas Tech’s 35 fi rst downs in the season opener is the most by a Bobcat op-ponent in Jeff Choate’s three-plus seasons.MSU’s three other non-conference oppo-nents combined for 42 combined.

Montana State has at least one take-away in the last 14 regular season outings.

Montana State is +3 in turnovers this year after leading the Big Sky in turnover margin (+0.77) in 2018.

MSU and its opponents have each scored 31 points after turnovers in 2019.

MSU’s 11 fumbles recovered in 2018 was two from the school’s single-season top 10 list. The Cats have recovered fi ve in six games this season.

MSU Defensive Player Liner Notes

JAHQUE ALLEYNE: The Virginia Tech transfer picked off fi ve passes in 2018, tied for most in the Big Sky and most by a Bobcat since Michael Beach (fi ve) in 2007... Alleyne recovered a fum-ble at Texas Tech... his two tackles-for-loss vs. NAU are a career high... snagged his fi rst interception of the season just after halftime at Cal Poly

TROY ANDERSEN: Troy Andersen, MSU’s QB in 2018, started at linebacker in the opener for the fi rst time since 2017... in the fi rst 12 scrimmage plays vs. SEMO Andersen scored a touchdown on a 38-yard gallop and terminated an SEMO drive on a sack... career high 10 tackles at Cal Poly... his 3.5 TFL is 5th on the team

JOSH HILL: In his only game played in 2018, Josh Hill intercepted a pass against #1 NDSU in the FCS Playoffs... has missed three straight, but is expected to return vs. UND

JASON SCREMPOS: Logged a half-tackle-for-loss vs. NAU... 8 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, in the last three games

BRAYDEN KONKOL: Brayden Konkol extends the string of Bobcats originally from the Treasure State wearing jer-sey #41 to eight straight years. The list includes Buck Buchanan Award win-ner Brad Daly and Grant Collins. The recently-implemented legacy number is a tribute to Montana, the 41st state inducted into the Union, and the school’s 1941 team, which was named consensus All-America by famed sportscaster Bill Stern because 13 Bobcats from 1939-41 lost their lives during World War II.

DAMIEN WASHINGTON: Damien Washington intercepted his fi rst pass as a Bobcat at Western Illinois... Washington’s 37 career games played is second among current Bobcat defensive players, behind Brayden Konkol’s 41.

MSU’s string of interceptions in four straight games last season ended at Idaho State, but the Cats recovered 11 opponent fumbles in their last six games of 2018. Montana State had 15 takeaways over that same six-game stretch.

Defensive end Bryce Sterk’s 11.5 tackles-for-loss leads the Big Sky, and his 8.5 sacks is 2nd. As a junior last fall he logged 17 tackles-for-loss in his 11 regular season games to lead the Big Sky, and his 8.5 regular season sacks also paced the conference. In the regular season those totals led the Big Sky, but factoring in the post-season he fi nished second in per-game rates in those categories.

Three of Montana State’s defensive starters (nose tackle Jason Scrempos, end Bryce Sterk and outside linebacker Aman-dre Williams) and two coaching staff analysts (Jonathan Amosa, Hayden Schuh) played at the University of Washington before coming to MSU. MSU defensive coordinator Kane Ioane also spent the past two seasons at UW.

Kick Team Notes Jered Padmos has punted 34 times in 2019, with 12 of those traveling at least 50 yards and only nine returned.

JoJo Henderson’s forced fumble on a kickoff vs. NAU was MSU’s fi rst kick teams takeaway this season.

Josh Hill logged his fi rst two special teams tackles of the year vs. Norfolk State, and both pinned the Spartans inside the 25-yard line on kickoffs.

Coy Steel blocked a Southeast Missouri punt, the fi rst of his career and MSU’s fi rst of 2019. Backing up to the Incarnate Word playoff game, the Cats blocked two punts in a four-game span.

Jered Padmos averaged 51.4 yards per punt at Texas Tech, second-best in the na-tion during Week One, pinning the oppo-nent inside the 20 four times and inside the fi ve once.

Padmos’ 76-yard punt at Western Illinois was his career long, and tied for sixth-longest in school history

On three kickoffs at Texas Tech, Tristan Bailey pinned the opponent at or inside the 25-yard line all three times

Since replacing Willie Patterson (8.5 yards per return) as Montana State’s primary punt returner, Jahque Alleyne has averaged 9.2 yards per return.

Josh Hill, in time limited by injury, has made two special teams tackles this season, both to pin the opponent inside the 20-yard line.

GAME #2#13 MSU 38, #12 Southeast Missouri 17Sept 7 * Bobcat Stadium * Bozeman, MT (19,497

Game RecapBOZEMAN, Montana -- Montana State put together a dominating third quar-ter Saturday night to pull away from Southeast Missouri 38-17. The game was tied 10-10 at halftime, but sparked by Troy Andersen and a bevy of other runners, the 13th-ranked Bobcats gave No. 12 SEMO no chance in front of a yellow-clad, sellout crowd of 19,497. Taking the opening kickoff in the third quarter, MSU (1-1) marched down the fi eld, where a 9-yard run by true freshman DeMareus Hosey made it 17-10. The key play was a 44-yard jaunt by Andersen, who fi nished with 102 yards while getting a quarterback sack from his defensive linebacker position. After a SEMO punt, Andersen ended another Bobcat drive with a 2-yard dash. His yardage on offense gives him over 2,000 in his career. The rushing touchdown was his second of the night, giving him 28 in his career, good for fourth on the Bobcats’ all-time list, one more than the legendary Ryan John-son. Leading 24-10, the Bobcats weren’t done as Logan Jones took a shovel pass from Travis Jonsen and scampered 55 yards around the right end, making it 31-10. The Bobcats’ fi nal score came on a 4-yard run by Karl Tucker II. For the quarter, MSU outgained SEMO 250 to 44 while shutting out the Redhawks 28-0. A late score by SEMO’s Mark Robinson accounted for the fi nal score. Sparked by Bryce Sterk, the Bobcats sacked SEMO (1-1) quarterback Daniel Santacaterina fi ve times, three by Sterk. MSU also got an interception by JoJo Henderson. Up 10-0 in the second quarter thanks to Andersen’s fi rst score, a 38-yard-er, and a 34-yard fi eld goal by Tristan Bailey, a few miscues by MSU allowed the Redhawks to tie the game at halftime. A dropped snap by MSU’s punter gave SEMO the ball on the 9-yard line, resulting in a 5-yard touchdown toss from Santacaterina to Zion Curtis. Isaiah Ifanse answered with a 62-yard gallop, but a series of snafus pushed the Bobcats back and led to a missed fi eld goal. And on the fi nal play of the half, an interception by Jahque Alleyne was negated by a roughing the passer call. Making the most of the opportunity, Kendrick Tiller slipped a 55-yard fi eld goal over the crossbar to tie the game, 10-10. Ifanse fi nished the night with 114 yards on the ground, all in the fi rst half as he didn’t return to the game after halftime due to an undetermined injury.

Game RecapMACOMB, Ill. – Montana State remained poised late and kept Western Illinois off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter to pick up a 23-14 nonconference football win on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Hanson Field. The Bobcats jumped out of the gate with momentum. After the MSU defense drove Western Illinois back 13 yards on its opening drive, the Bobcat offense responded. A 10-play, 64-yard drive was highlighted by three Casey Bauman completions. The Bobcats found the end zone when Logan Jones burst through the MSU offensive line on a 14-yard touchdown run. The Montana State defense kept Western Illinois off the fi eld throughout the fi rst half. Four of the Leathernecks’ fi rst fi ve drives ended with punts. MSU’s Chase Benson forced a fumble on WIU’s fourth drive which Brayden Konkol recovered. Western Illinois tied the score at 7-7 with a 65-yard touchdown pass mid-way through the second quarter. The score remained square heading into the second half. Montana State re-gained the lead on its opening second half drive. The Bob-cats moved into the WIU red zone when Bauman connected with Travis Jonsen for a 46-yard strike. MSU drove down to the WIU 2-yard line, but an errant snap forced the Bobcats to settle for a Tristan Bailey 27-yard fi eld goal. The MSU defense held Western Illinois to just one fi rst down on its ensuing drive. Following a Leathernecks punt, the Bobcats capitalized. Jones ripped off an 87-yard rushing touchdown to put Montana State up 17-7. The Leathernecks wouldn’t go away easily. WIU came right back to complete an 8-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that spanned just over 4 minutes. The score remained 17-14 heading into the fourth quarter. Western Illinois began the fourth quarter driving into the MSU territory. The Leathernecks reached the Bobcat 22-yard line, but that’s where the drive would end. WIU quarterback Connor Sampson was intercepted by MSU cornerback Damien Washington. He returned the pick to the Western Illinois end zone, but a holding call forced MSU to take over on its own 30. Special teams played a big role in the fi nal 12 minutes of the game. MSU’s offense was unable to get anything going and went 3-and-out on its next drive. Jered Padmos was forced to punt, but his boot glanced off a Leather-neck back and MSU’s JoJo Henderson pounced on the live ball. Bailey eventually put Montana State ahead 20-14 behind a 41-yard fi eld goal at the 11:13 mark in the fourth quarter. Another drive brought Western Illinois into MSU territory. The Leathernecks drove 42 yards but had to settle for a fi eld goal attempt. A 35-yard attempt sailed wide right to give Montana State the ball back. Montana State was able to move the ball down fi eld thanks to roughing the passer and defensive pass interference calls on its ensuing drive. Facing fourth-and-5, the Bobcats sent Bailey on to the fi eld who completed a 47-yard fi eld goal with 2:40 left on the clock. It put MSU up by two possessions, 23-14. The Bobcat defense remained strong late. The Leathernecks’ fi nal drive ended in a 3-and-out and Montana State wrapped it up in the victory formation. Montana State narrowly outgained Western Illinois (443-437), but did most of its work on the ground with 194 yards rushing. Jones was MSU’s top ball car-rier with 167 yards rushing on 21 carries. Jonsen led the team with 6 receptions and 71 yards receiving, while Coy Steel (5 receptions) and Kevin Kassis (4 recep-tions) followed. Casey Bauman went 16-for-30 through the air for 149 yards passing. Bryce Sterk notched a team-high tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack. Michael Jobman had fi ve tackles on the Bobcat defensive side and Jahque Alleyne earned a sack. Konkol and Washington each had two pass breakups.

Game RecapBOZEMAN, Montana – Three different Montana State runners surpassed 100 yards and the Bobcats gained a season best 670 total yards on Saturday while beating visiting Norfolk State 56-21. The game marked the fi nal non-conference game for the eighth-ranked Bobcats, and was their third straight win after a season-opening loss at Texas Tech. The overnight and morning rain that soaked Bozeman prior to the game was gone by kickoff, and as the clouds lifted over the Gallatin Valley, the crowed of 17,647 got a glimpse of the season’s fi rst snow which had settled in the higher elevations. Surprise starter Tucker Rovig sparked the Bobcats offense, throwing for 221 yards and four touchdowns. It was Rovig fi rst start since starting two games in 2018. For the season, the Bobcats (3-1) have still not thrown an interception. In all, eight different Bobcats ran the ball and eight different receivers made catches, including Rovig who pulled a defl ected ball out of the air for a three-yard completion in the third quarter. Leading the way on the ground was Lane Sumner with a career high 113 yards and two touchdowns. Shane Perry chipped in with a career best 111 yards. Meanwhile, Logan Jones fi nished with 101 yards and two scores, all in the fi rst half. Rovig’s top receiver was Kevin Kassis with six catches and his fi rst touchdown of the season, coming in the third quarter. In addition, Coy Steel caught fi ve balls and reached the end zone in the second and third quar-ters, and Travis Jonsen caught fi ve passes and scored a touchdown in the second quarter. While Norfolk State (1-3) did gain 351 total yards, including 112 yards rush-ing by Kevin Johnson, Bryce Sterk sparked MSU’s defense with 3.5 sacks and 10 total tackles. MSU had the ball for nearly 32 minutes and averaged almost 8.5 yards per play. The Bobcats’ offense clicked in the fi rst half as MSU built a 28-14 halftime lead. Behind a strong run game, MSU totaled 369 yards in the fi rst two quarters. Rovig hit his fi rst four passes and fi nished the half with 146 yards. The Spartans moved the ball well against the Bobcats, totaling 202 yards in the half, but Michael Jobman forced a fumble and Amandre Williams recovered it leading directly to Jones’ second score. Rovig’s 34-yard scoring pass to Steel made it 21-7 and just before the half, Rovig connected with Jonsen from 8 yards out to account for the halftime score. The Bobcats’ fi rst score followed a faked fi eld goal in which kicker Tristan Bailey, one of the eight Bobcat runners, scooted around the right side for a fi rst down. Two plays later, MSU, which trailed early 7-0, tied the game as Jones raced in from the 16 yard line.

GAME #5Montana State 49, Northern Ariz. 31September 28 * Bobcat Stadium * Bozeman, MT

Game RecapBOZEMAN, Montana - Montana State went on a 35-0 scoring streak to turn back visiting Northern Arizona on Saturday, 49-31. Down 31-14 early in the third quarter, seventh-ranked MSU scratched and clawed its way to the win, fi nally taking a 35-31 lead in the fourth quarter behind Travis Jonsen’s short scoring run in the fourth quarter. With 19,257 fans on hand in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams, MSU (4-1, 1-0) totaled 340 yards on the ground as Jonsen led all rushers with a career best 105 yards. Jonsen scored two touchdowns, as did Shane Perry, who gained 67 yards on the ground. MSU also got a rushing touchdown from Troy Andersen. Overall, MSU gained 443 total yards to 437 for the Lumberjacks (2-3, 0-1), but more importantly held the ball for nearly nine minutes more. On a cold, blustery day, MSU’s comeback began when quarterback Tucker Rovig recovered a loose ball in the end zone that made it 31-21 heading into the fourth quarter. The offensive attack continued into the fi nal period as MSU’s stuck to the ground, at one point calling 22 consecutive running plays. Ander-sen’s short burst made it 31-28 before Jonsen’s score put MSU ahead to stay. Perry’s two scores fi nished the onslaught. Defensive plays led to both of Perry’s scores. The fi rst came after JoJo Henderson forced a fumble on the kickoff following Jonsen’s second score. The loose ball was recovered by James Campbell and Perry responded with a 15-yard dash. Perry’s second score came after Amandre Williams’ intercepted Case Cookus to stymie NAU’s comeback. On the play, a blitzing Brayden Konkol leveled Cookus who threw the wobbler right to Williams. Jonsen also led all Bobcat receivers with fi ve catches for 36 yards as Rovig hit on 11 of 23 passes for 106 yards. Jahque Alleyne led MSU with eight tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and Konkol added seven tackles. Giveaways hurt the Bobcats in the fi rst half. The day’s fi rst touchdown occurred when NAU’s Taylor Powell returned an interception 28 yards for a score. A second-quarter MSU fumble led to a Cookus scoring pass to George Romero-Robinson. Down 21-0, MSU’s Alleyne returned a short punt to the NAU 14-yard line and Jonsen sprinted into the end zone on the next play for his fi rst score. The Bobcats trimmed the defi cit to 21-14 when Rovig hit Coy Steel, who managed to hang on after being sandwiched by two NAU defenders and trot in for a 49-yard score. But just before the half, NAU scored on a wide receiver sweep by Stacy Chukwumezie to make it 28-14 at the intermission. The second half was yet to come, and the Bobcats made the most of it. After punting six times in the fi rst half, Bobcat Jared Padmos only kicked twice in the second half. * Travis Jonsen rushed for 105 yards on Saturday, his career high, becoming the sixth different Bobcat to rush for at least 100 yards in the fi rst fi ve games of 2019.* Montana State rushed for 340 yards on Saturday, and in the last two games has gained 789 yards on the ground (110 carries). That happened without start-ing running back Isaiah Ifanse playing in either game.* Junior linebacker Troy Andersen scored his third touchdown of 2019 on a two-yard run, giving him 29 rushing touchdowns and 30 total TDs in his career. He’s now tied with Don Hass and Chad Newell for second place on MSU’s career rushing touchdowns list.* After Northern Arizona scored on a 46-yard fi eld goal with 11:28 remaining in the third quarter, Montana State scored the game’s fi nal 35 point.* The Bobcats rushed for 244 yards after halftime.* There were no sacks in Saturday’s game.

Game RecapSAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Jeff Choate isn’t worried about style points. “It doesn’t matter by how much,” Montana State’s fourth-year head coach said after his team earned a 34-28 overtime win at Cal Poly on Saturday. “Just how many.” Travis Jonsen scampered in from 10 yards out to seal the win, after the Mus-tangs missed a fi eld goal on their fi rst overtime possession. But it was a miss set up by two tackles-for-loss by Bobcat defensive tackle Derek Marks. “His demeanor belies it,” Choate said, “but Derek is such a competitive kid. He rises to big occasions.” After falling behind 7-0 when Cal Poly engineered a 12-minute plus fi rst quarter drive, the Bobcats built a 28-7 lead. A fourth-quarter turnover and shanked punt gave Cal Poly two short scoring drives, then the Mustangs tied the game late to force MSU’s fi rst overtime since a 2010 win at Idaho State. The Bobcats outgained the Mustangs in total offense (376-340). Tucker Rovig threw for 163 yards on 12 of 24 passing, which included an interception and a second quarter touchdown pass to Kevin Kassis. Jonsen had 155 yards of total offense and two rushing touchdowns for MSU. Isaiah Ifanse made a return to the Bobcat backfi eld and rushed 10 times for 69 yards. Callahan O’Reilly led Montana State’s defense with 16 tackles. He was fol-lowed by Michael Jobman (13), Marks (11) and Troy Andersen (10). Marks had a team-high 3 tackles-for-loss while Amandre Williams added two. Jahque Alleyne had an interception for MSU and JoJo Henderson broke up two passes.

GAME #7Sacramento State 34, MSU 21October 12 * Bobcat Stadium * Bozeman, MT (19,437)

Game RecapBOZEMAN, Montana – Kevin Thomson threw for three touchdowns and ran for two others to lead Sacramento State to a 34-21 win over Montana State on Saturday. Thomson, a sixth-year junior, fi nished with 23 completions in 30 at-tempts for 260 yards while adding 74 more yards on the ground. With the score 21-14 at halftime, the Hornets (4-2 overall, 2-0 Big Sky) upped their lead on a Thomson run and a Thomson pass to Marshall Martin to make it 34-14 after three quarters. In front of a Homecoming crowd of 19,437, the Bobcats couldn’t close the gap until the end of the game when Tucker Rovig hit Kevin Kassis for a 2-yard touchdown. Prior to that, MSU twice came close to scoring in the fourth quarter. The fi rst followed a Tyrel Thomas interception of Thomson in the end zone. Two long passes from Rovig to Kassis put the ball inside the 10-yard line, but the Hornets held on fourth down. Later, the Bobcats were stopped on downs from the Sac State 13-yard line. Overall, MSU (5-2, 2-1) was fi ve of eight on fourth down and four of 15 on third down as its fi ve-game win streak came to an end. Sac State was a combined 10 of 14 and had the ball for fi ve minutes more than MSU. Rovig completed 16 of 29 passes for 262 yards. Kassis was his favorite receiver, hauling in six balls for 119 yards. Travis Jonsen caught fi ve passes for 109 yards. Logan Jones topped the Bobcat ground game with 60 yards. Overall, MSU totaled 403 yards to 378 for Sac State. The sixth-ranked Bobcats fell behind early as Thomson scored his fi rst touchdown to open the scoring in the fi rst quarter. But Jones’ 40-yard sprint set up a 17-yard game-tying jaunt by Jonsen who took the direct snap and got a key block downfi eld from Rovig. Another short run by Thomson and a short scoring pass from Thomson to Pierre Williams put the Hornets up 21-7. In the wan-ing moments of the fi rst half, the Bobcats went for it on 4th and 3 from the Sac State 6-yard line. This time Troy Andersen took the direct snap and followed the blocking of his old high school teammate R. J. Fitzgerald to make it 21-14 at the half. Andersen’s touchdown was the 30th of his career on the ground, the second most ever for a Bobcat.

I feel like they beat us on both sides of the line of scrimmage, something we’ve clearly hung our hat on around here. Our inability to win those short-yardage situations was a big factor in the game. (We played) a very good football team today. They executed at a very high level, we did not in any phase, in my opinion, up to our capability.”On MSU’s struggles on third down defensively: “I think that was a huge issue in the game. We got them off schedule a couple of times but they were a step ahead of us, quite honestly. Every time we played man they had a little pick route to get a guy open, and every time we played zone they had the right call. You have to compliment them. There were some things we left out there, certainly, but we were beat by a better team today.”On Sac State’s ability to mitigate MSU’s pass rush: “They do a great job getting the ball out fast. A lot of their stuff is (run-pass option), and those were things they executed at a really high level. Every time we went into a dime package those guys would sneak down thinking they had to defend the run and he did a nice job riding the RPO and was very accurate when he threw the ball. They don’t give up a lot of sacks anyway because they do get the ball out so quickly.”
