Mission Statement

The Euclid Symphony Orchestra cultivates community through

music, fosters appreciation of orchestral music, educates children

about the orchestral genre and provides an outlet for musicians to

perform and develop musicianship.

History

The Euclid Symphony Orchestra was organized on January 8, 1961,

after a three year effort by Melvin Robb, then Principal of Euclid

Central Junior High School. Though not a musician himself, Mr.

Robb felt that a community needed an orchestra and sixty musicians

from Euclid, East Cleveland, South Euclid and Willoughby joined

together to form Euclid Orchestra, as it was originally known. Sup-

port was given by the Euclid Inter-Service Club Council and member

service clubs. We have been fortunate to have many musical direc-

tors. In 1961, Harry Hershey was appointed first director.

Today, the orchestra presents five concerts a season, as well as a

children’s concert, at the Shore Cultural Centre in Euclid, which

is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Managed by a

volunteer board, and funded solely through donations and ticket

sales, the orchestra is currently sponsored by the Shore Cultural

Centre Corporation.

Matthew Salvaggio is an American conductor currently holding

several musical directorships. The 2021-2022 season marks his

fifth year as Music Director of the Euclid Symphony Orchestra,

where his responsibilities include conducting classical, pops

and educational concerts. Additionally, he is in his seventh

year as Musical and Artistic Director of the University Heights

Symphonic Band, and is the conductor/co-founder of Orchestra

19, a 19th-century historical performance practice orchestra

based in Cleveland.

Prior to these appointments, Matt has served as Director of

Bands on the faculty at Hiram College, and adjunct professor of

conducting at Lakeland Community College.

An advocate for new music, Matthew has helped commission fifteen works for winds in

the last decade from composers including Mark Camphouse, Anthony O’Toole, Michael

Kallstrom, Kevin Waczyk and Tony Manfredonia. Artistic collaborations include John

Rautenberg (Cleveland Orchestra), John DiCesare (Seattle Symphony), Joshua Lauretig

(Buffalo Philharmonic), Kyra Kester (Akron Symphony), Cameron Leach, J.c. Sherman,

Emily Cornelius and ESO concertmaster Liesl Hook.

In 2019, Matt was a finalist for conducting positions with both the United States Army

and Air Force Bands – an honor reserved for a select few each year. In 2015, he was a

semi-finalist in the National Band Association’s Young Conductor Mentor Project. Mr.

Salvaggio is active as a guest conductor and clinician and has been invited to conduct

local public-school bands, community bands, summer music camps and honors ensem-

bles.

While completing his master’s degree, Mr. Salvaggio was the founder and conductor of

the Kent Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble – a community/service-based ensemble in in

Kent, Ohio. With that group, he conducted several successful world premieres and rec-

orded two film scores. Matt has also served as Graduate Assistant Director of Orchestras

and Graduate Assistant in Bands at Kent State University. In 2007, he was a guest con-

ductor in residence with the Medina Community Band.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Matt earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology

from the University of Akron and a Master of Music degree in conducting from Kent

State University. At Kent State, his primary teachers were Scott Seaton and Wayne Gor-

der, and he has undertaken additional conducting study in symposia with Donald Huns-

berger, Mallory Thompson, Michael Haithcock, Rodney Winther and Michael Votta.

Matt maintains memberships in the College Band Directors National Conference, Na-

tional Conductors Guild, Ohio Music Education Association, National Association for

Music Education, Association of Concert Bands, World Association of Symphonic

Bands and Ensembles, and Tau Beta Sigma (’07).

Matt lives in Cleveland with his partner, Joshua.

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Euclid Symphony Orchestra, thank you for your continued support of live orchestral music. We are so grateful that you are joining us for our 61st season and we sincerely hope you enjoy today’s concert! Any support you can give helps us fulfill our mission to cultivate community through musical experiences, introduce children to the orchestral genre, and provide an outlet for creative expression for area musicians. Helping us reach our $10,000 goal allows us to purchase new music, present guest artists and contribute to our continual operating expenses. All donations received will be listed in the remaining 2021-2022 concert season programs. Together we can keep our music playing for years to come. Thank you for your time, consideration and continued support in making a difference in our community. Yours in Concert, Rachel Schindler Beach President, Euclid Symphony Orchestra

Tom Baker Young Artist Competition About the competition

In the 2019-2020 season, the Euclid Symphony Orchestra held its inaugural Young Artists Competition, named after long-time friend, donor and board member of the ESO Tom Baker. The competition is open to students age 18 and younger who are advanced musicians (instrumental or vocal) capable of playing appropriate level reper-toire, including concerto-level (or equivalent) virtuosic works. The competition winner will receive a $500 cash prize and a performance with the Euclid Symphony Orchestra.

2021 Tom Baker Young Artist Award Winner: Daniel Colaner, pianist and organist

_____________________________________________________________ Daniel Colaner, 16, from Akron, Ohio, captured international media attention at the age of 12 with his performance on piano at Carnegie Hall and on organ at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on the same day. Since then, his talents have been showcased on ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, The Harry (Connick Jr.) Show, and the BBC World Service Newsday. As a pianist, Daniel has been the winner of numerous competitions and awards including the American Protégé Piano Competition, the OhioMTA Buckeye Piano Competition, the Steinway Junior Piano Competition, and the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Concerto Competition.

As an organist, Daniel has been featured on the NPR radio show From the Top (Show #377), performing “Jupiter” from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, and on PBS, performing Doxology Variations with the American Pops Orchestra in One Voice: The Songs We Share – The Sacred. He was the recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award in 2020 and named a 2021 National Young Arts Winner in Classical Music. He was also the 1st Prize and Audience Prize Winner in the Sursa American Organ Competition (HS Divi-sion) in 2019. Most recently The Diapason magazine named him among their “20 Under 30” Class of 2021, a select group of young adults at the forefront of the organ field.

Diagnosed with stage IV cancer as an infant, exposure to music as cognitive therapy combined with his love of sound, unleashed his passion for the piano at age 5 and organ at age 10. Daniel continues to actively promote the study of classical music on television and radio and has helped raise thousands of dollars for music education and music therapy for a variety of non-profit organizations.

Daniel studies piano with Sean Schulze at the Cleveland Institute of Music and organ with David Higgs of the Eastman School of Music. In addition to being an avid chamber musician, Daniel currently serves as Organ Scholar at Cleveland’s Trinity Episcopal Cathedral under Todd Wilson and as an aux-iliary organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Canton, OH. Outside of mu-sic, Daniel’s passions include computer programming, repairing electronics, jazz improvisation, playing tennis, and spending time with his calico cat, Imogene.

Joy to the World, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King! Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and nature sing, And heav'n and heav'n And nature sing.

Deck the Halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la! T'is the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la! Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la la la, la la la la! Troll the ancient yuletide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la!

God rest ye merry gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay. For Jesus Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas Day. To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray. Oh, tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy. Oh, tidings of comfort and joy!

Good King Wenceslas looked out On the Feast of Stephen When the snow lay round about Deep and crisp and even. Brightly shone the moon that night Though the frost was cruel When a poor man came in sight Gathr'ring winter fuel.

Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled! Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th' angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King!

Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin, Mother and child. Holy Infant, So tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Jingle Bells Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh; O'er the fields we go, Laughing all the way! Bells on bobtails ring, Making spirits bright; What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight! Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way! Oh what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way! Oh what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh!

A Christmas Festival
