Tutor Leaders Request for Tutor Leaders - Spring 2017 This post is an invitation to apply for educational leadership positions for Medical School Tutoring, formerly called Supplemental Instruction. Although the program name has changed, the learning format is very similar to what has been offered previously. That is, student leaders conduct two one-hour tutoring sessions per week for the students currently enrolled in a particular class. This post is an advertisement to recruit for tutors for Spring 2017 courses (Organic Chemistry 320, Pathology 2, Medical Microbiology). If you are interested and meet the criteria, you are invited to respond to this email to Kathleen Moburg at [email protected] with a letter of application. How will I benefit from being a tutoring leader?

• Great opportunity to review the content for future high-stakes tests • Share your enthusiasm and expertise for the topic with others in a leadership role • Earn $10/hour (six hours per week is typical; that is, two one-hour tutoring sessions

and four hours of preparation time)

Qualifications: • Have a cumulative science GPA of 3.0 or above • successfully completed the course(s) you wish to tutor with a grade of A • be able to schedule six hours per week for tutoring (typically two one-hour teaching

sessions and up to four hours of preparation time) • be able to complete the hiring process through Human Resources and the School

of Medicine’s Business office in a timely manner; as well as enter time worked electronically.

• be willing to establish and maintain open and frequent communication with the course professor(s)

• previous tutoring experience helpful, but not required • letter of recommendation is preferred (especially from the professor of the course

you wish to tutor) but is not required.

• your name, course(s) you wish to be considered • responses to the following questions

o why you wish to be a tutor leader o examples of learning strategies you would implement during sessions o why you would be the ideal candidate

Stop Saying ‘Sorry’ if you Mean to Say ‘Thank You’ Over and over when students come into my office they apologize. “Sorry for taking up your time.” “Sorry that I’m crying.” “Sorry that I’m repeating myself.” “Sorry”. “Sorry.” “Sorry.” I always tell students to stop saying “Sorry.” Especially in cases like the ones I just mentioned, where a “thank you” works better. I came across this excellent cartoon the other day about how to say “thank you” instead of “Sorry”. Here are a couple of examples, below (there are many more in the full cartoon):

Scholarship Thomas W. Loeb, MD Scholarship Eligibility: This scholarship award is available to students wit h a physical or a learning disability. Amount: $2,000: The award which will be distributed among three students; there will be one award of $1,000 and two awards of $500. Requirements: Students will be requested to create a graphic on the subject of self-esteem; the requirements for the graphic will be provided upon submission of the application request. There is one section on the homepage (scroll down) titled “Thomas Loeb, MD Scholarship;” students may contact us via this portal to apply. Poetry Awards 14th Annual Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poet ry

Awards

This annual contest honors the legendary, preeminent cardiovascular surgeon, pioneering medical scientist, gifted medical educator, prolific author and scholar, and passionate advocate of optimal healthcare throughout the world. Dr. Michael E. DeBakey strongly advocated a role for the humanities in medical education and in the development of a full, enriching intellectual life.

Guidelines:

1. Only original poetry on a medical subject and by undergraduates currently enrolled in accredited United States medical schools is eligible.

2. Entrants must document enrollment in an accredited American medical school in pursuit of the M.D. degree by a copy of the student photograph I.D. card.

3. Each medical student may submit only one poem, not to exceed two pages.

4. Entries must be postmarked no later than Jan. 31, 2017.

5. Poems must be on a medical subject.

6. Poems must be:

a. Original, not published or under consideration for publication, and not having previously received a poetry award.

b. Limited to two (2) pages, double-spaced.

c. In English; no translations from other languages.

d. Printed on 8.5 x 11 inch bond paper.

e. Accompanied by a cover page, with the following information:

• Poet’s name • Current mailing and e-mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers if available. • Copy of photographed student I.D. card documenting medical school enrollment.

f. Submitted in six (6) hard (print) unstapled copies, as well as emailed to Christine Cummings ([email protected]).

7. Entries will not be acknowledged.

8. A distinguished panel of qualified judges will assess the poems.

9. Winners will be announced in July 2017.

• The first-prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $1,000.00 • The second-prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $500.00 • The third-prize recipient will receive a cash prize of $250.00

10. The first-prize poem will become the property of the Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Awards program and will be submitted to a major medical periodical for consideration for publication. If it is accepted for publication, the publisher will own copyright.

Announcements Format

Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

1) All submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed to

[email protected]

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the bo dy of your email . Please use black font only and include a title for your announcement

such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your specific announcement will not be sent out to the school . The only time a correction email

will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs (mistyped or forgot to include an announcement).

Submissions which do not meet the new requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The announcement may then be resubmitted to

[email protected] for inclusion in the In the Know.

4) To be included in the following Monday’s “In the Know”, announcements must be submitted by 5PM the prior Thursday.
