DATA...what that means for BISDThe Question everyone should be able to answer: Do you know your data, and is it driving your instructional decision making?

Keep this issue of the INSPIRE as your GO TO issue for Quizzes & Assessments.

ASSESSMENTS - WHAT ARE THEYTHE DETAILS

• Every teacher should have 3 assessments for each 6 weeks

• These could be a grade from the essay that the students have written, these could be a Unit Test or multiple Unit Tests (depending on what is available based on the YAG and where you are in the TEKS Resource System) [Unit Tests should come from the TEKS Resource System], and assessment grades could come from a project that is assigned. In some classes (electives) these could be performance assessments.

•These along with weekly quizzes should be part of your DATA portfolio that you analyze to support instructional adjustments.

FRIDAY QUIZZES - THE WHAT, HOW & WHY

Every teacher on campus should be giving Friday quizzes to their students.

THE WHAT:

• A 10 question quiz that is TEK Standard driven based on your TEKS that you want to cover & the students should understand by end of week.

• These quizzes should directly align with your TEKS driven lesson plans. Based on the YAG what am I covering this week, what TEKS do I need the students to master, what questions should they be able to answer? This is all front end thinking...this is “beginning with the end in mind” thinking. The information you are going to assess the students on for the Friday quiz should be decided when you are planning on Monday.

• During the course of the week, as you are formatively assessing students, you may decide that the students are all getting a certain standard but you are concerned about another one -- the quiz can be altered to address specific TEKS for that week or all the TEKS you wanted the students to know for that week.

• These quizzes should count as DAILY GRADES. Remember you are supposed to have at least 8 daily grades per 6 weeks and 3 Assessments.

THE HOW:

• These quizzes should be created using TEKS Resources materials. These should be aligned with the STAAR test. (Subject areas NOT addressed in the TEKS resource system &/or not tested will just design your own quiz based on your subject standards).

• These should be scanned so that we have weekly data that can be reviewed of student understanding of the TEKS addressed. [Core content areas & STAAR tested areas should have these scores back by the following Tuesday, so adjustments in instruction can be made].

• In grades 3 - 12 there should be a Short Answer Question (designed like STAAR) each week on the weekly quiz. The students should be taught the RACE acronym when answering.

• These quizzes will be turned in to Ms. Beam for scanning and score retrieval. [if you need help with this process. Talk to Ms. Beam.

• The quiz should be turned in to Ms. Peace on Monday mornings.

THE WHY:

• We want to make sure that you have the most accurate, aligned to standards data possible each week. We do not want you to have to course correct at the end of the 6 six weeks when you find out there is a gap in student understanding.

• This weekly data should also help you with informal student collaboration...pair share, student to student work stations, etc.

• The information gained from these weekly quizzes not only should impact your instruction but should be indicators for the unit assessments.

The volleyball team will go as the number 1 seed from our district in the class A playoffs. They will receive a bye in the

first round and their first playoff game should be onNovember 5.

Our varsity cross country teams should do well in the district meet which will be held in Moody on October 19th.

The boys football program did exceptionally well academically the first six weeks.

No junior highers were lost to grades and only 2 high schoolers. We shoot for 100% but this is a good start. Of the

26 varsity players, 70% made at least the A/B honor roll. Thank you teachers for your hard work and encouragement

of these young men.
