The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

1st Lesson Job 1:1; 2:1-10

A man in the land of Uz was named Job. That man was honest, a person of absolute integrity; he feared God and avoided evil. One day the divine beings came to present themselves before the Lord. The Adversary also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to the Adversary, “Where have you come from?” The Adversary answered the Lord, “From wandering throughout the earth.” The Lord said to the Adversary, “Have you thought about my servant Job, for there is no one like him on earth, a man who is honest, who is of absolute integrity, who reveres God and avoids evil? He still holds on to his integrity, even though you incited me to ruin him for no reason.” The Adversary responded to the Lord, “Skin for skin—people will give up everything they have in exchange for their lives. But stretch out your hand and strike his bones and flesh. Then he will definitely curse you to your face.” The Lord answered the Adversary, “There he is—within your power; only preserve his life.” The Adversary departed from the Lord’s presence and struck Job with severe sores from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. Job took a piece of broken pottery to scratch himself and sat down on a mound of ashes. Job’s wife said to him, “Are you still clinging to your integrity? Curse God, and die.” Job said to her, “You’re talking like a foolish woman. Will we receive good from God but not also receive bad?” In all this, Job didn’t sin with his lips.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 26 All sing the refrain after the choir, and where indicated.

Give judgment for me, O Lord, for I have lived with integrity; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, O Lord, and try me; examine my heart and my mind. Refrain.

For your love is before my eyes; I have walked faithfully with you. I have not sat with the worthless, nor do I consort with the deceitful. Refrain.

I have hated the company of evildoers; I will not sit down with the wicked. I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord, that I may go in procession round your altar, Refrain.

Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving and recounting all your wonderful deeds. Lord, I love the house in which you dwell and the place where your glory abides. Refrain.

Do not sweep me away with sinners, nor my life with those who thirst for blood, Whose hands are full of evil plots, and their right hand full of bribes. Refrain.

As for me, I will live with integrity; redeem me, O Lord, and have pity on me. My foot stands on level ground; in the full assembly I will bless the Lord. Refrain.

2nd Lesson Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12

In the past, God spoke through the prophets to our ancestors in many times and many ways. In these final days, though, he spoke to us through a Son. God made his Son the heir of everything and created the world through him. The Son is the light of God’s glory and the imprint of God’s being. He maintains everything with his powerful message. After he carried out the cleansing of people from their sins, he sat down at the right side of the highest majesty. And the Son became so much greater than the other messengers, such as angels, that he received a more important title than theirs. God didn’t put the world that is coming (the world we are talking about) under the angels’ control. Instead, someone declared somewhere, What is humanity that you think about them? Or what are the human beings that you care about them? For a while you made them lower than angels. You crowned the human beings with glory and honor. You put everything under their control. When he puts everything under their control, he doesn’t leave anything out of control. But right now, we don’t see everything under their control yet. However, we do see the one who was made lower in order than the angels for a little while—it’s Jesus! He’s the one who is now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of his death. He suffered death so that he could taste death for everyone through God’s grace. It was appropriate for God, for whom and through whom everything exists, to use experiences of suffering to make perfect the pioneer of salvation. This salvation belongs to many sons and daughters whom he’s leading to glory. This is because the one who makes people holy and the people who are being made holy all come from one source. That is why Jesus isn’t ashamed to call them brothers and sisters when he says, I will publicly announce your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you in the middle of the assembly.

La Palabra del Señor. Demos Gracias a Dios.

The Holy Gospel Please stand. Mark 10:2-16

The congregation is invited to sing “Heleluyan” three times before the Gospel.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Some Pharisees came and, trying to test him, they asked, “Does the Law allow a man to

divorce his wife?” Jesus answered, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses

allowed a man to write a divorce certificate and to divorce his wife.” Jesus said to them, “He

wrote this commandment for you because of your unyielding hearts. At the beginning of

creation, God made them male and female. Because of this, a man should leave his father

and mother and be joined together with his wife, and the two will be one flesh. So they are

no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, humans must not pull apart what God has put

together.” Inside the house, the disciples asked him again about this. He said to them,

“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if a wife

divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” People were bringing

children to Jesus so that he would bless them. But the disciples scolded them. When Jesus

saw this, he grew angry and said to them, “Allow the children to come to me. Don’t forbid

them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people like these children.

I assure you that whoever doesn’t welcome God’s kingdom like a child will never enter it.” Then he hugged the children and blessed them.

The Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The congregation is invited to sing “Heleluyan” twice after the Gospel.

The Sermon Please be seated at the invitation of the Preacher. Noah Bullock Executive Director, Cristosal

The Nicene Creed Please stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Please stand or kneel

In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.

For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

For all who are in authority; for this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble, For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For the Church in El Salvador; [here the leader prays for a church or ministry in the cycle of prayer of Diocese of Missouri]; for Michael, our Presiding Bishop, for George Wayne, our bishop, and for all bishops and other ministers. For all who serve God in the Church.

Offertory Anthem: Cuando el pobre nada tiene J. A. Olivar

and Miguel Manzano

When the poor ones, who have nothing, still are giving; when the thirsty, pass the cup, water to share;

when the wounded offer others strength and healing: we see God, here by our side, walking our way, we see God, here by our side, walking our way.

When compassion gives the suff'ring consolation; when expecting brings to birth hope that was lost; when we choose love, not the hatred all around us:

we see God, here by our side, walking our way, we see God, here by our side, walking our way.

When our spirits, like a chalice, brim with gladness; when our voices, full and clear, sing out the truth; when our longings, free from envy, seek the humble:

we see God, here by our side, walking our way, we see God, here by our side, walking our way.

When the goodness poured from heaven fills our dwellings; when the nations work to change war into peace; when the stranger is accepted as our neighbor:

we see God, here by our side, walking our way, we see God, here by our side, walking our way.

The presider offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ. In response all sing:

The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ’s passion and resurrection and prays over

the bread and wine.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The presider concludes with prayer for the coming of God’s reign.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, By him, and with him, and in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

The congregation sings the Great Amen to the tune of Heleluyan.

The Lord’s Prayer (prayed in English, Spanish, or the language of your choosing).

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Amen.

Our Partnership with Cristosal

In 2017 Holy Communion committed to partnership with the Anglican-founded non-governmental organization Cristosal.

Cristosal is a nongovernmental organization based in El Salvador advancing human rights in Central America through rights-based programming, research, and learning. They take a human rights-based approach to community development and poverty reduction that recognizes at its core the inherent dignity, equality and inalienable rights of every human being. This principle repositions the poor in the development enterprise from beneficiaries of charity to citizen partners, architects and owners of their own development process. We approach this relationship as a “partnership for mission.” We often hear stories about the abuse that is possible when a church from the developed world engages in work in the developing world. Historically, the question of missionary engagement has been complex. Our church has a history of missionary work with both beautiful and tragic dimensions. Through the current partnership, we strive to learn together with Salvadorans through Cristosal’s “Global School.” These seminars include reading, dialogue and a week-long intensive learning experience in El Salvador. The seminar process generates new ideas, proposals, and actions by engaging individuals from different cultures and backgrounds in dialogue, shared learning, and capacity-building to address universal human rights issues. Every other year, we put together a conference in St. Louis with Cristosal, to bring the groundbreaking work they are doing in Central America to the United States. We believe in our region, which has its own struggles with poverty, racism, and gun violence, we have a great deal to learn from the human-rights based approached to community organizing being practiced by Cristosal.

Liturgical Changes for October

October is Hispanic month in the United States. Many of our liturgical changes reflect our vestry's goal to incorporate more Spanish in our liturgy, and work to embrace our relationship with our partners in El Salvador.

• Spanish in the Liturgy: As more Spanish-speakers and folks with Latino heritage are joining the church, and moving into the area, the Worship Committee decided to intentionally include Spanish in some specific places in our liturgy. You’ll notice that the Lord’s Prayer is printed both in Spanish and English and the Blessing will be given by the priest in Spanish. We will also include Spanish language music regularly in this month.

• Gender Expansive Language: Holy Communion often intentionally uses liturgical sources that expand upon traditionally gendered language for God and for people. The prayers for this season are from “Enriching Our Worship,” a collection of expansive language worship services which intentionally include male, female, and nonspecific pronouns and imagery for God and the human community.

• Scripture Readings from the Common English Bible: We first started using this translation of the Bible over the summer, and have chosen to continue into the Fall. This Bible translation was edited by the most diverse group of translators that have ever come together on a Bible edition, and was written to be accessible for most readers of English. What phrases or changes in translation do you notice?

• Building of a Dia De Los Muertos Ofrenda: In Latin America, the dead are remembered – and celebrated – in a unique way every year. Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is celebrated on November 2, All Soul’s Day, with colorful, joyous altars filled with mementos and photos of the beloved to honor and remember those who have died. Throughout October, all are encouraged to bring a photo or other memento of a loved one who has died and place it on the altar. We’ll bless the “ofrenda” on All Saints Sunday November 4 during the services at church.

From our Diocesan Gun Violence Prevention Ministry: When we proclaim a principle in our public witness, it is important to practice it personally. Along with the Diocese of Missouri we ask all gun owners: Please ensure that all guns in your home are locked and secured against use by children or those suffering agonizing despair.
