Classroom Highlight—1st Grade 209

1st Grade is off to a great start in room 209! The students are really enjoying science this school year. They have completed different experiments that have helped them learn about making predictions: making slime, making a lava lamp, and making elephant toothpaste. Each time, Ms. Beckert would tell the students about the various materials they were going to mix together and the students were asked to predict what the mixture would be like. The students have also been enjoying many different math games: Penny Dice, Bunny Hop, Roll to 50, and Top-It. In reading, they have been story mapping. After each story they read, the students work to identify the characters, setting, problem, and solution. When Ms. Beckert isn’t teaching 1st grade, she loves spending time with her niece and nephew who live nearby! And, Ms. Holifield not only has a passion for teaching 1st grade, but also for makeup artistry!

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Serving as a Eucharistic Minister at STA Parish involves as-sisting the priest at the sacred liturgy, at the Saturday Vigil Mass or on Sundays, by distributing Holy Communion. Eucharistic Ministers are ministers of hospitality. They are given the distinct privilege of sharing the Body and Blood of Christ with all who come to them. If this ministry is of interest to you and you are at least 16 years of age, contact Jen-nifer Davis at [email protected] or call the parish office at 773-324-2626. Training is provided, and ministers serve twice a month at their preferred Mass time.

Called to Serve! Have you ever wondered what it’s like up on the altar during Mass? Have you ever wanted a closer look at what it is all about? We are seeking 4th to 8th graders and adults at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish who would like to become more involved by serving at Mass. We will provide the training. All you have to do is show up

with enthusiasm and a heart that is ready to participate in Mass in a new way. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please contact Jennifer Davis at [email protected] or call the parish office at 773-324-2626.

Altar Servers

Lectors are the proclaimers of God’s Word. They are lovers of scripture who brings the power of the living word of God to the assembly. If you are 16 years old or older, and would like more information on becoming a Lector, please contact Jennifer Davis, [email protected], or the parish office at 773-324-2626.

The word of God does not dwell in the communal reading,

but in the communal hearing.

The Charismatic Prayer Group meets every Sunday from 12:30 - 1:45pm in St. ThomasSchool for informal praise, worship and intercessory prayer. It now takes place in room 110 of the STA School. All are welcome!

The Rite of Christian Initiation

of Adults (RCIA) is a process through which adults learn about the teachings of Je-sus as the Catholic Church has handed them on and put these teachings into practice by living as part of the Catholic commu-nity, serving others and praying. The RCIA is for three groups of people: those who have never been baptized, people who were baptized in another community of faith, and baptized Catholics who have never received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. For more information please contact Jennifer Davis at [email protected] or call the parish office at 773-324-2626.
