The Three Crosses

God has given to us the gift of life, breathing life into our bodies and our souls. God has given to us the gift of life, abundant and eternal, claiming us as children of God through the cross of Jesus Christ, who was crucified between two sinners. We often see this gift symbolized by three crosses in various places, often by the side of the road as a regular reminder of that gift.

All that we are about in the church is in response to God’s life-gifts to us, symbolized through the three crosses. Every gift that we return to God is in response to God’s first gift to us. Every good deed. Every act of love and charity. Every resource that we share. Every prayer. Every refrain from hurting another. Everything that we do as a follower of Jesus is a response to God’s life-gifts to us.

How is God calling you to share your resources of time and energy and passion, as well as your financial resources for today and tomorrow? During this fall, particularly on three Sundays, we will explore “The Three Crosses—The Three T’s.”

On Sunday, October 8, we will explore together our response to God through Time (and

Talents) that we may share through Windsor Hills UMC. There are nearly 100 ways that we may serve in response to God’s gifts on what we call our “Call and Response Sheets.” This is your regular opportunity to prayerfully and thoughtfully consider how God is calling you to serve through Windsor Hills. Some new things will be highlighted that will enhance our ministry as a church in the community and the world. You may return on that day your “Call and Response Sheet” to better prepare us for 2018.

On Sunday, October 22, we will explore together how God is calling us to share our financial resources, Today, for the current work and life of the church. God’s generosity has brought us together and your generosity keeps us together in faithful service year after year after year. Through your gifts, amazing things happen, God’s mighty works are visible, both here in our church and in our community, both locally and globally. On that day, you may return your estimate of giving for 2018, when even more amazing things, mighty works of God will be happening here at Windsor Hills.

On Sunday, November 5, we will explore together how those saints who have gone before us have helped us, through their legacy gifts to the church, to make an impact in our community and our world in ways that we didn’t dream possible. We will give thanks for those saints who have died in the past year on that day, “All Saints Sunday.” We will give thanks for those saints whose gifts to the church continue to make a difference in the lives of our community and celebrate what those gifts have enabled us to do. And we will think towards Tomorrow and the legacy that we may leave behind us ourselves, that future generations may be blessed beyond measure in their service to God.

Make sure you are with us on

these three crucial days, so that we may cross all of our

T’s as we prepare for 2018 and beyond.

Peace, Doug

UMM [United Methodist Men]

The 17 members the Windsor Hills United Methodist Men saw the close and in your face what “Bobby Burns” meant by the ‘best laid plans of men and mice’ when we were confronted by members of the Hunters for the Hungry at our September meeting at Famous Anthony’s in Salem on September the 18th.

The manager of Famous Anthony’s had scheduled meetings of the two groups for the same time in the one available space. Fortunately, the Hunters meeting was set for 6:30 pm and ours for 6:00 pm allowing our guest speaker, Al Soltis of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to graciously shorten his PowerPoint projection to a much shorter talk after which we moved to the sunny northwest corner of the premises for our dinner. This was in no small part made possible by the fact that the United Methodist Church is a major support of Hunters for the Hungry as they arrived first and had established squatter’s rights.

On October 6th at 8 pm, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is having a program called “Fields of Faith” at Salem Stadium. This is a free concert with music, a race, and guest Wayne Robinson, former NBA player. Registration is at 4:45 pm and the race at 5:15 pm. It should be an enjoyable event for young people.

This was our first meeting with the program arranged by our new program director, Perry Pence. My sincere thanks to him and his predecessor, Ira Chaffin.

Junius E. Crowgey, UMM President

Trustees Git 'Er Done For the last couple of months, we have been working on doors and locks to the entrances and exits of the church. The exterior door next to the parlor has a new locking mechanism on the inside and the church keys now work on the lock on the outside of that door. The lock on the Education wing door has been replaced with a new mechanism that works with the current keys but does not stick. The door to the office has a completely new system installed for the safety of our staff and office volunteers. The door has an intercom, video camera and “buzzer” so that those in the office can see who is at the door and buzz them in from the office.

We have also installed a new phone system to replace our 11 year old system. And we have a newly updated fire alarm system that will help keep Trustees from getting false alarm calls at 5 AM and will protect the church better.

The Trustees are very appreciative of the work Audrey Kidd and all the volunteers she recruited and organized to complete her Girl Scout Gold Award which resulted in 3 newly renovated children’s Sunday School classrooms. We also want to thank Heather Case and all the volunteers that helped her renovate the children’s Worship Room and the hallways in the children’s Sunday School area.

Church Security

Did you unlock a door when you came into the church? If you did please make sure that it is locked when you leave.

Think about coming into the church for a meeting or first thing in the morning for work and finding that one or two doors have been left open all night. You don’t know if there is someone in the church or not. So you go looking through the halls, cell phone clutched in your hand checking to see if there is someone there. This should not be happening!

If you have a key to the church you are a responsible person. That means you make sure that the doors are locked when you leave. Please take extra care to make sure that you check doors before you leave.

We care about the safety of our staff and church members.

Our new intercom is mounted to the right

side of the office door.

page 6 Volume 10 † MISSIONS †

The Missions Committee looks forward to Missions Sunday, October 1, when we will celebrate the projects that we have been engaged in throughout the summer and now beyond. Come prepared to share your experience.

We plan to continue our 5 Mile Mission Challenge into 2018, and hope to increase our impact and presence in our community. Get on board and make a difference!

Join us “Operation Christmas Child” Shoebox Packing

Party – October 8 at 4:30 in Windsor Hall. Dinner will be served when the packing is done. Feel God’s love as we hear about how our gift-filled shoeboxes are changing children’s lives all over the world!

We received wonderful items through our Christmas in July gifts, plus our VBS children brought a lot of toys and school supplies. BUT…we have some needs that we’ll share and if you are able to help, please do!

† Small sewing kits for the older girls; Children’s clothing, for kids ages 4-14 such as t-shirts, shorts, socks, underwear, flip flops; Wash cloths/soap (even motel-size soap). Soap and washcloth together shall be placed in a sandwich-sized baggie; Coloring books; ink pens; small notebooks; erasers; blunt scissors; rulers; solar calculators; stuffed animals

Last year we packed 117 shoeboxes at our packing party and then our church members packed another 140 shoeboxes for children living in difficult situations around the world. Our challenge is to exceed the 257 shoebox gifts this year to grow the Kingdom of God worldwide even in places where the Gospel has never been heard.

Bring a neighbor, a friend, or two. Everyone is welcome!!

KAIROS Prison Ministry—Our KAIROS Prison Ministry Team is preparing for a “four day short course in Christianity” at Keen Mountain Correctional Center on October 24-27. To learn more about KAIROS, you are invited to visit www.kairosprisonministry.org. Please take time to click on some of the videos that show what God is doing inside of prison walls.

Dave Benson, Richard Lawson, and Ken Briggs will be representing our congregation on the “Inside Team” in October. However, KAIROS allows for many Christians to support the ministry from the comfort of home. Three ways of support are:

PRAYER—During the period of October 24-27, someone will be praying for the residents and our team for 24 hours/day. If you would like to cover a 30 minute time of prayer, please see Dave, Richard, or Ken.

COOKIES—Home baked and ‘prayed over’ cookies are at the heart of this ministry. We have heard many times, “I came for the cookies, and I found Jesus”. WHUMC is responsible for filling the container that will be in the Narthex until October 22. On the evening on October 22, WHY (Windsor Hills Youth) will be baking additional cookies and packing those that you bake at home.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT—It costs about $12,000./year for the KAIROS Ministry at Keen Mountain. If you’d like to help, see Dave, Richard, or Ken. Checks should be payable to ‘KAIROS of Virginia’.

Thank you for supporting KAIROS and the many other ministries of WHUMC.

Volume 10 CHILDREN † YOUTH † YOUNG ADULTS MINISTRIES

Greetings In Christ from W.H.Y.

It’s almost time for our annual Trunk or Treat! It will be on October 28 from 5 pm - 7 pm. Please bring a car or two so we can make it even better than last year! Contact Dana if you can help out!

We’ve been enjoying our newly revamped youth room downstairs. We’re planning on repainting pretty soon and making some other upgrades. Our youth attendance continues to grow and the more the merrier. If you know of any youth that want to join in on the fun, our regular Sunday meetings are from 5pm -7pm.

As our spiritual growth exercise for this year, we are keeping individual journals. We are referencing Wesley’s small group accountability questions as the basis of our reflections. The idea is for the youth to become more aware of how God is working in their lives and how well they are

coping with the many challenges they are facing in school and their social lives. We look forward to a lot of spiritual breakthroughs!

We are still looking for volunteers to provide meals for our Sunday meetings. Please contact Dana Bledsoe if

you would like to volunteer: 521-0168 or [email protected].

As always, we are praying for our church family and thank you for your support and blessings!

The lazy days of summer have come and gone! Kids are back in school and October is upon us. Many thanks to the numerous hands

which helped complete the renovation in the Children’s Education Wing. It truly was a joy to see so many come together to create such an inviting space for our children. Windsor continues to amaze me with its generosity of time, talents, and gifts! I am humbled to be serving in this role alongside each of you .

On September 17th, we celebrated our teachers and children with a Move-Up Celebration. What a glorious day of recognition and fellowship. If you are interested in joining us on this journey of making young disciples for Christ, please contact me to see how you can assist.

Movie Night served over 104 people from the community and was a huge success. I think it might have been the nachos, ha ha! Thanks to all of those who helped create such a wonderful event. Big thanks to Brando the Great! He is always a Big Hit! October proves to be a relaxing month as we seek to get back into our routine in the classrooms. Join us on October 8th, as we pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

*Remember, bring your children to the Worship Room (Old Preschool Room) to start the Sunday School hour!

Blessings, Heather W. Case Director, Ministries with Young People [email protected] - (540) 774-4730

"Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

Mark your calendars for another great outing! On November 19th, we will be foregoing Sunday School and heading to Amazement Square in Lynchburg after

the 9 o’clock service to spend the day together! Hope you can join us.
