Our Wonderful Volunteer Gardeners are Busy!

Workers last week were Alana Pharis, Elaine Hanna, Cindy Battiste, and Barry & Connie Gaston. They were busy re-planting the iris bed, adding four new hosta plants and four penstemon plants in the interior garden. They will re-plant the iris bed in the sign garden this week. They have 100 tulip bulbs en-route, so will have a big tulip planting day soon. If you have an interest and would like to be involved with this group, please contact Connie Gaston via email at: [email protected] or call the church office and leave your name and phone number and we will have Connie return your call. Thanks to all the volunteers that work in the gardens and everyone should be sure to take a moment to enjoy them!

Thankful for Diversity … Stronger Together We are seeking ways to bridge the gaps in our community and in our world so on Sunday, November 5, from 5:00 - 7:00pm a potluck dinner will be held in Fellowship Hall. After the meal there will be three diverse speakers. All are invited to attend and are welcome to bring friends. Please make sure to not bring any dishes to the dinner that contain pork or marshmallows.

Our Sympathy to … Brian Sutton & family, in the death of two cousins this past week.

*********************** Meet & Greet Meet & Greet is a time following the 9:00 service and prior to the 10:15 service, when we gather in the Parlor for a light snack, cup of coffee and great conversation. It’s a time to catch up with others in our church. It’s a time that we all enjoy. There are many openings to host Meet & Greet in October, November and December. Simply provide a light snack for 60-70 people. Cookies, bowl of pretzels, fruit, a cake, etc. It doesn’t have to be a big expensive spread. If you and your friends or your group would like to host a Meet & Greet, please sign up on the clipboard in the church office. If you would rather not host, but would like to donate an item to be served for Meet & Greet, please do. Let’s keep Meet & Greet going. Call Debbie in the office if you have any questions.

Congratulations to … Larry Schmidt for taking First Place in his age division in the Prairie Fire 5K on Sunday,

October 8th. We also congratulate Nancy Rusanowsky for finishing the Full Marathon of 26.2 miles … WAY TO GO Larry and Nancy!

Just a Note – I want to say thank you for the continued humbling honor and privilege it is for me to serve CHUM as your pastor. I believe, with our new Visioning Task Force great things are in store for our congregation as we continue the work of kindom in the world. While TruDee and I were in Colorado, I was rereading a couple of Thich Nhat Hanh’s books, one of which is Living Buddha, Living Christ. It was encouraging and inspiring to be reminded of our calling and purpose in these words he writes: “For the Buddha to be present to the Sangha, we must practice in a way that keeps his teachings alive, and not confined to sermons and scriptures. The best way a Buddhist can keep the teachings of the Buddha alive is to live mindfully in the way Buddha and his community lived. Likewise, for Christians, the way to make the Holy Spirit truly present in the church [and the world] is to practice thoroughly what Jesus lived and taught. It is not only true Christians need Jesus, but Jesus needs Christians also for his presence to continue in the world.” CHUM, may we keep on the work and presence of Christ into the future unafraid and sharing the light of love and peace in the world around us.
