Vytenis Andriukaitis was appointed European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety in November 2014. Before, he served as Lith-uania’s Health Minister from 2012 to 2014. He was a Member of the Lithuanian Parliament for a total of six mandates, serving from 2008 to 2014 and from 1992 to 2004. During this time, he led the Lithuanian delegation to the Convention on the Future of Europe and served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs. He was one of the co-authors of the 1992 Constitution, and a signatory of Lithuania’s independence act. He was also one of the founders of the Lithuani-an Social-Democratic party, and in 1990 was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, which preceded the Lithuanian Parliament. He graduated from the Kaunas Institute of Medicine and was a practicing surgeon for more than 20 years. He also holds a degree in History from Vilnius University.

Helene Hellmark Knutsson has been Minister for Higher Education and Research of Sweden since 2014. She is also a politician in the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Hellmark Knutsson was formerly an ombuds-man in the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, as well as a Municipal Commissioner and Mayor of the Municipality of Sundbyberg. Along with other assignments and positions as a board member and chair, Hellmark Knutsson has also been a County Council Commissioner and group leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party at Stockholm County Council.

José Inácio Faria is a Member of the European Parliament and Portu-guese Partido da Terra, part of the European People’s Party. He was elected to the European Parliament in 2014 and sits on several com-mittees, including the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). He is a member of the MEP Interest Group “European Patients’ Rights and Cross-Border Healthcare.” Before his election to the European Parliament, Faria provided legal and political support to the Partido da Terra at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Secretary General of the Partido da Terra and from 2007 to 2009, he was the Partido da Terra’s Chair of the National Jurisdiction Council. Faria is a lawyer and graduated from the Universi-ty of Cáceres.

DACIANA SÂRBU @DacianaSarbu MEP, VICE-CHAIR OF THE ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC HEALTH AND FOOD SAFETY COMMITTEE, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Daciana Sârbu is a Member of the European Parliament and Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD), part of the Group of the Progressive Alli-ance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D). She is vice-chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environ-ment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). Some of her main priorities include child nutrition and the fight against obesity. She co-authored a European Parliament resolution, calling for a legal limit on industrial trans fatty acids in food and she supports legislation to minimize chil-dren’s exposure to advertising for unhealthy foods and alcohol.

AIN AAVIKSOO @ainaaviksooDEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL FOR E-SERVICES AND INNOVATION, MINISTRY OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS, ESTONIA

Ain Aaviksoo is Deputy Secretary General for E-services and Innovation at the Ministry of Social Affairs in Estonia, overseeing digital transfor-mation and innovation of social security in Estonia, including health, labor, and social matters. Aaviksoo also chairs the mHealth working group of the European Commission’s eHealth Network and lectures at the Tallinn University of Technology and the Medical Faculty of the University of Tartu. He has earlier work experience as a physician, sen-ior civil servant, health-tech entrepreneur, an international consultant on large system transformation and technology adoption in health care, and as CEO of public policy think-tank, Praxis. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and contributed several book chapters on health policy and e-health. Aaviksoo obtained an MD from the Uni-versity of Tartu and an MPH from Harvard University.

NICOLA BEDLINGTON @NABedlingtonSECRETARY-GENERAL, EUROPEAN PATIENTS’ FORUM

Nicola Bedlington joined the European Patients’ Forum as its first Executive Director in 2006 and became Secretary-General in 2014. In this capacity, she is the Coordinator of the European Patient Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (EUPATI). From 2004 to 2006, she worked for the Swiss Government, leading the Environment and Schools Initia-tives Secretariat (ENSI). From 1996 to 1999, Bedlington was the founding Director of the European Disability Forum, an umbrella organization uniting over 70 European disability NGOs and National Councils of Disabled People to advocate for the rights and inclusion of disabled citizens. From 1991 to 1996, she led the NGO unit in the HELIOS Pro-gramme, a European Commission Action Programme promoting equal opportunities for disabled people. In Switzerland, she also worked as an independent consultant and evaluator, specializing in European social and development policy and health advocacy. Bedlington studied business and human resource management in the U.K. and France.

THOMAS BOMBELLES @WIPOHEAD, NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS AND INDUSTRY RELATION SECTION, WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION Thomas Bombelles is Head of the Non-Governmental Organizations and Industry Relation Section at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to joining WIPO, Bombelles worked in the pharmaceutical industry as an international policy analyst based in Washington D.C., working first for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and subsequently for Merck & Co., Inc. He has a BA degree in English from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MA degree in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Washington D.C.

PETER BRAUN @Roche HEAD OF GLOBAL ACCESS STRATEGY AND HEALTH POLICY, ROCHE

Peter Braun is Head of Global Access Strategy and Health Policy at Roche in Switzerland. Braun is responsible for leading global health policy, product communications and access strategy across the or-ganization. Braun’s career at Roche began in 1991 and has spanned a variety of global, regional and affiliate roles across developed as well as emerging countries (U.S., Mexico, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Peru). In his role as Lifecycle Leader of Herceptin and Tarceva, he led teams through multiple clinical study readouts, as well as two global regula-tory approvals. Prior to his current role, he worked as Roche’s General Manager of Peru. Braun holds an MBA from the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) and undergraduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School of Business.

KARL BRAUNER @wtoDEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL, WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION

Karl Brauner has been Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since 2013. Before, he was Director-General for external economic policy at the German Federal Ministry of Economics, where he was Germany’s member in the European Union’s (EU) Trade Policy Committee, taking part in WTO ministerial conferences. As Direc-tor-General, he administered all the instruments of export promotion, export controls and all bilateral economic relations outside the EU. In Berlin, his responsibilities covered budget, human resources and general administration, including cabinet and parliamentary matters. He was involved in the Government move from Bonn to Berlin. He also worked at the German Mission to the United Nations in New York, Athens and Sydney. Brauner started his career in the legal department of the German Ministry of Economics. He is a lawyer, with degrees from Germany and Cambridge.

SALLY DAVIES @CMO_EnglandCHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, UNITED KINGDOM

Sally Davies was appointed Chief Medical Officer for England and Chief Medical Advisor to the United Kingdom in 2010. She advises on medical matters with a particular focus on public health and providing leadership to public health directors. Before, she was the Department of Health’s Chief Scientific Advisor and Research Development lead. Davies has spent her career raising public awareness on Antimicro-bial Resistance (AMR). She chairs the World Health Organization AMR Strategic & Technical Advisory Group, and wrote a Penguin book and performed a TED Talk on the issue. In 2006, she founded the National Institute for Health Research. Davies is Fellow of the Royal Society and member of the National Academy of Medicine.

BRUNO DE OLIVEIRA ALVES @EU_Commission POLICY ADVISOR, DG CONNECT, EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Bruno Alves is Policy Advisor at the European Commission Directo-rate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), working on policy and research and innovation (R&I) initiatives promoting Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Before joining the European Commission, he was the head of Nike Inc.’s European Public Policy. During his time at Nike, he also served as elected President of the European Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) and Board Member of leading European think-tank “Sport & Citizenship.” In 1998, he moved from the Council of Europe in Strasbourg to Brussels to join Ernst & Young and launch an advisory practice for the Technology, Communication and Entertainment (TCE) industries. He started his career at Portugal’s national public television and radio broadcaster (RTP) and has 20 years’ experience in interna-tional public policy having worked in Lisbon, London, Strasbourg and Brussels. Bruno holds a degree in European Community Law from King’s College University, London.

SOHIER ELNEIL @ElneilSuzy CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FORWARD AND CONSULTANT IN UROGYNAECOLOGY, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LONDON, INSTITUTE OF WOMEN’S HEALTH

Sohier Elneil is a Urogynaecologist Consultant and Gynaecologist at the University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurol-ogy and Neurosurgery in London. She started her career in the field of Urogynaecology in the early 1990’s when she became involved with patients who suffered vesicovaginal fistulas and female genital mutilation in under-resourced settings. This formed the basis of a career that started with gynaecology and went onto sub-specialization in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. Over the last decade, she has developed the field of neuro-urogynaecology. Her work involves both clinical and basic science research and collaborates with colleagues in the United Kingdom, Europe, America, Africa and Asia. Elneil has been awarded grants for her work on sensory mechanisms in the bladder, mechanism of action studies in neuromodulation, the role of chemo-neuromodulation in chronic pain states, obstetric fistula research, and female genital mutilation research.

FELIX FRAUENDORF @MoodpathAppCO-FOUNDER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR, AURORA HEALTH

Felix Frauendorf is co-founder and managing director of Aurora Health, a Berlin-based technology company developing digital solutions to im-prove the detection and treatment of mental health disorders. Before founding Aurora Health, Frauendorf worked for the company builder Hitfox Group in Berlin as group strategy manager. In this role he helped to start three new companies in the financial technology sector. Prior to Hitfox, Frauendorf spent two years in management consulting, focusing on the development of business steering models for interna-tional clients in the health care and specialty chemicals industry. He holds an MSc in international business and graduated with distinction from ESCP Europe Business School in Berlin and New Delhi.

FUMIE GRIEGO @IFPMAASSISTANT DIRECTOR-GENERAL, INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS & ASSOCIATIONS

Fumie Griego was appointed Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning, Policy and Research at the International Federation of Phar-maceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA) in early 2017. Griego leads IFPMA’s work on health economics and policy, such as the value of medicines, pricing and reimbursement, and metrics and evalua-tion. Prior to joining IFPMA, she was Head of Global Oncology Policy and Strategy, Global Government Affairs & Policy at Merck KGaA and Vice President for International Health Policy at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). Before PhRMA, Griego was a senior economist at the White House Office of Management and Budget where she provided U.S. senior officials in both the Bush and Obama Administrations policy advice on a range of health policy issues. Griego holds a PhD in Health Policy from Harvard University and BA and MSc of Science degrees in Earth Systems from Stanford University.

SINÉAD HEWSON @sineadhewson MEMBER OF THE BOARD, EUROPEAN INSTITUTE OF WOMEN’S HEALTH

Sinéad Hewson is Board Member of the European Institute of Wom-en’s Health. She has a background in health and communications and works with clients on how gender and diversity can increase perfor-mance in teams, organizations, and society at large. Hewson also acts as a strategic advisor to the Women’s Business Initiative International, counseling on areas of women and entrepreneurship, and The Bijlmer project, helping people who have been trafficked to become independ-ent and rebuild their lives. She was a lecturer at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and is a PhD candidate.

ILONA KICKBUSCH @IlonaKickbusch DIRECTOR, GLOBAL HEALTH CENTRE AND ADJUNCT PROFESSOR, GRADUATE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

Ilona Kickbusch is Director of the Global Health Centre and Adjunct Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. Her specialties include global health governance, health security, public health, health promotion, health literacy and health in all policies. She is a senior advisor to the Regional Directors of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Offices for Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and has advised many countries on their global health strategies. Kickbusch was recently awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdien-stkreuz) in recognition of her contributions to innovation in govern-ance for global health and global health diplomacy. Kickbusch has been deeply involved in the development of the Health 2020 European health policy framework, and was previously a member of the inde-pendent Ebola interim assessment panel of the WHO. She has contrib-uted to innovation in health in many ways throughout her career and is strongly committed to the empowerment of women.

Markram founded the Blue Brain Project in 2005, digitally reconstructing and simulating the brain on supercomputers. In 2011, he started forming a consortium of 112 universities and developed a proposal for the Human Brain Project to scale up to reconstructing and eventually simulating the human brain. In 2013, the Human Brain Project won a €1 billion euro grant for over 10 years from the European Commission. He finished school in 1980 at Kearsney College in South Africa, studied medicine and neuroscience at Cape Town University in 1988, obtained a PhD in neuroscience at the Weizmann Institute in 1991, completed postdoctoral work as a Fulbright Scholar at the Nation-al Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1992, and was a Minerva Fellow at the Max-Planck in 1994.

Prior, she worked in EU affairs for 12 years, first as a liai-son officer of the Romanian Senate to the European Parliament for four years, and subsequently as a policy adviser at the European Parliament for eight years. During her final years in the European Parliament, she focused on health care policy, particularly on how to improve EU-level measures to fight diseases, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and fibro-myalgia.
