If you haven’t seen it by now, Tom Brady is a great example of hard work. In a recent
advertisement, Tom is seen on the screen with 100 other computer created Tom
Brady’s all doing the same thing; exercising over and over again. You see him
straining and working hard but all he says is, “Every Day”. He knows that to be ready
and strong, you need to work at it every day. He is committed to being at his mental
and physical best.
When I lived in Hanover, Mass, I had a walking buddy. We would meet every morning
at 6:00 am and walk 3 miles together. When we first started walking it was hard. We were committed to the
“idea” of being healthy but neither one of us wanted to get up early. There were rainy days and cold days, days
when we wanted to roll over and go back to sleep. Once it became a healthy habit, however, we forgot how hard
it had been to get up so early. If we ever missed this habitual exercise routine, our whole day would seem off. If
we missed more than one or two days, our muscles weakened. Though it was sometimes hard to keep up, having
another person there helped us to stay true to our commitment to health and we were both the better for it. After a
few months, it became a healthy habit, like flossing or getting 8 hours of sleep.
To me, going to church is important in our relationship with God. It is a spiritual exercise that leads to spiritual
health. Recently, people have begun to realize that attending church leads to physical and mental health as well.
Some would even dare say that worshipping is truly a healthy habit.
In a website article from Florida Hospital (https://www.healthy100.org), it reads, “One study found that
attending religious services can increase the lifespan by an average of seven years for whites and potentially 14
years for African-Americans. An additional study of over 100,000 people done at Johns-Hopkins University
found that attending religious services on a weekly basis reduced the risk of death the following year by almost
50 percent.”
T. M. Luhrmann, (http://web.stanford.edu/dept/anthropology/cgi-bin/web/?q=node/105) a professor of
anthropology at Stanford, the author of “When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical
Relationship With God,” and a guest columnist for the New York Times, wrote recently, “One of the most
striking scientific discoveries about religion in recent years is that going to church weekly is good for you.
Religious attendance — at least, religiosity — boosts the immune system and decreases blood pressure. It may
add as much as two to three years to your life.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/21/opinion/sunday/luhrmann-why-going-to-church-is-good-for-you.html?_r=0
In other words, attending church on a regular basis is good for us! Who knew? God knew. God still knows.
When Tom Brady, shows up on the field, you can be sure he is physically and mentally ready. So is his
community of teammates like his Offensive line (we hope). That strength and readiness doesn’t appear without a
serious work ethic. He is working on these muscles every day. Having strong “spiritual muscles” will help us
meet our days. When we get in “the pocket” of church, we can count on our Faith line to help us.
If it has been a while since you have come to church, won’t you consider dusting off your church cleats and
jogging on over? If you know of someone who may need a church buddy, to encourage them to come, won’t you
give them a nice call and invite them to “walk with you”? If you are someone who needs a way to get here,
won’t you let us know and if you cannot get here, then let us know that too and we will bring the “church” to
you! Fall is a perfect time to gather together to give thanks and keep our strength up, so come to church, it “does
a body good”!

From our Associate Minister …..
“Rejoice always! Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Fall is already in full swing and as we move toward the autumnal feasts of harvest and thanksgiving, I’d like
to invite us to view “gratitude,” as a spiritual practice! I remember an elder from a church I attended as a
child who still exemplifies for me how we can actually practice gratitude with intentionality! She would say,
“I make sure the first thing I do each morning when my feet touch the ground is to give thanks to God for all
life and for the day!” Not surprisingly, a joyfulness of spirit flowed from this person and I imagine she’d
been honoring and maintaining her practice of gratitude for a long time. She was able to give and share so
much by resting her heart in a spirit of thankfulness. Sometimes it can be easy to forget to do this.
Have you ever kept a gratitude journal? It’s a great practice! Each day by answering three simple questions,
“Who or what inspired me today? What brought me joy today? and what brought me peace today?” creates
a space to intentionally remember what’s going well. It helps us get in the habit of keeping our awareness
grounded in a positive and life affirming spirit! When I’ve tried this I was surprised how long the list of
things to be grateful for could get at times! I found myself noticing simple and ordinary things, like
water. There are so many blessings and simple joys to remember and celebrate! When we do this, giving
becomes natural.
Church is a way of practicing gratitude! Church is a place where we all give and receive so much both as
individuals and as a community! There will be so many opportunities to practice gratitude this season with
fundraisers to support our church’s 2016 mission trip, apple picking, corn mazes, book drives, trips to the
soup kitchen, a jazz worship service, and enriching events like Sharon Key’s non-violence training! (Stay
tuned to the announcements for details!) I find the more we come together in community to remember the
Spirit, the more we discover we have to be thankful for and the more we find ourselves giving! So let’s keep
coming to Church and practice gratitude together this season of harvest and thanksgiving!
Blessings of joy and gratitude,

BCCUCC CHATS AND OUR STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
We are gathering to chat together about our future, our joys and concerns, and our stewardship needs. Join us for one or all of the scheduled chats that will be held after worship or attend a smaller conversation in our cottage chats. They will each have the same format but the conversation will of course be different. The chats held in homes will need you to sign up so they can plan. (See the information on the next page on how to Sign Up)
If you cannot use the link, you may call the church office and we will be glad to help you sign up. There will be a questionnaire that Rev. Sue will be asking us to focus on in our chats along with other handouts giving you information about giving to our church.
If you cannot attend any of the chats, you can pick up a packet of handouts in the office after October 4th. This will be an important time for Rev. Sue and the church leadership to listen to your ideas and concerns so that they can better inform the Search Committee and help leadership to plan a budget for next year. Hope to see you all!

New Member Sunday is November 15th
At the 10 a.m. service we look forward to receiving new members
into this church. Please join us and welcome those
who will become members.
Anyone interested in becoming a member is asked
to attend ‘Conversations about our Church’ before
worship on Sunday, October 25th
(see article above for details)
Want to learn more about our church? Maybe interested in becoming a member? Then come to...
Conversations About Our Church
with Rev. Sue Remick before church 8:45—9:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 25th in the Library.
Coffee and muffins will be provided. ‘Conversations’ is an opportunity for those new to our church community to meet each other and learn more about our church, and is also for those preparing for membership, whether they’re new or have been attending for a long time. There will be a general overview of our community – why we do things the way we do, our history, sacraments and organizational structure. ‘Conversations’ is open to all for informational purposes but those interested in becoming official members of our church should attend. New members will be received on Sunday, November 15th during the worship service.
For planning purposes it is helpful to know how many will be attending so if possible please let Rev. Sue know ([email protected] or 246-0111 x 103) if you will be coming. Child care can also be arranged if needed—just let us know ahead of time. This is an informal gathering so older children are welcome to sit in.

Happy Birthday, Rinchen.
Richen will be 9 years old on October 10, 2015.
Our Church School children, through their weekly offerings, are
continuing to support a young Tibetan refugee’s education and
care this coming year. Her name is Rinchen Lhamu and she is the
oldest of 3 children from an extremely poor farming family living on the India-Tibet border. Her
parents are no longer able to care for her so she is at the Tibetan Refugee School in Kalimpong,
India, a city of 43,000 in the Darjeeling district. A recent letter from Rinchen reads:
Dear sponsors,
Hello, how are you? Hope you are fine there. I am fine and happy here and doing my lessons well in school. Our mid-term exams have just finished and I have done well. In the past month there were heavy earthquakes in our region for many days but no damage done here like Nepal. We are all very sad for Nepal and its people. On the 6th July, 2015 there was His Holiness Dalai Lama’s birthday of 80 years which was celebrated by the Tibetan communities in a grand way organizing cultural programs in our school for 2 days. There was birthday cake, tea, cold drinks and food for all the people. We all enjoyed the celebration very much. I stop my letter with much of my love and kisses to you all.
Your little friend, Rinchen Lhamu
Children’s Offering Envelopes
Special, pre-dated, children’s offering books are available for each child after they have been registered for the 2015-2016 church school year. Please help your child remember their offering and to use the special envelopes that they have been given. The children’s offering is collected in the classroom when there is Church School, or can be put in the offering plate on Sunday’s when there is no church school.
If your child doesn't have a set of children’s envelopes, please see Andrea Bullard to register your child and get a set.
OWL group donates to Youth Pride Inc.
Last spring the Our Whole Lives team found that
there was an overage in their budget. They asked the
youth what they thought they should do with it, and
the whole group decided to make a donation to Youth
Pride Incorporated in Providence.
“YPI is the state’s only safe drop-in
space dedicated to meeting the social,
educational and emotional needs of
young people throughout the state
impacted by their sexual orientation
and/or gender identity.”
YPI sent us a kind letter thanking us for our donation.
THANK YOU…... to everyone who has
registered their child/youth for 2015-2016. Our
Safe Church Policy requires that all children from
Nursery through 12th Grade be registered in order
to participate in programs offered here at the
church—including Church School, Youth Groups,
Confirmation and OWL. Each child needs their
own registration form.
If you haven’t yet registered your child/youth,
please do so by completing a registration form -
available from outside Andrea’s office or from the
church website www.bccucc.org. Parents who
registered their child in 2014-15 need only update
and initial last year’s form — see Andrea.

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that
supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of
NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Two-thirds of the
offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety
of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.
The 2015 theme for NIN is "Unexpected Places" and connects to the work of the UCC’s Council for American Indian
Ministries (CAIM) and our denominational advocacy to address centuries of injustice stemming from the Doctrine of
Discovery*. Historically, forebears of the UCC established churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota,
Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today there
are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000

PB & J and other items needed for TAPIN
Our Mission and Justice Ministry team is asking the congregation to bring in jars of peanut butter and jelly to help stock TAPIN’s shelves. Our ministry of supporting TAPIN (our local food pantry) by donating
non-perishable food items dropped off considerably over the summer and we need to get it going again!
Other items that TAPIN currently needs are cereals, pasta, cookies, Progresso soups, and toilet paper. Donated items can be put in the plastic bins in the narthex or dropped off directly at TAPIN located in the basement of the Barrington Library building.
Our church will once again be donating items to TAPIN for their Thanksgiving Food Drive. Watch the weekly announcements for what they need us to provide this year.
TAPIN, (Touch A Person in Need) is a non-profit organization, made up of volunteers from our community. If you have time available and you want to help, there is always room for more volunteers to help in a number of different ways. To volunteer or for more info call TAPIN at 247-1444 between 9 am and Noon, Mon—Fri or visit www.tapinri.com
Our church is totally self-supporting and relies on your donations—whether from a pledge or a gift in the offering plate—to pay the clergy and staff, all of the bills, for children and youth programs etc. Thank you for financially supporting your church.

Q. What’s missing from this photo?
A. The top of the weather vane on the steeple.
The fish part of the weather vane broke off and fell down over a year ago,
leaving just the arrow pointer and the compass points on top of the steeple.
This week we were finally able to remove the broken part when the steeple
was painted. Catanzaro painters, using an airlift, were able to take it down
leaving just the compass points (see photo). The two pieces—the fish vane
and the arrow part—were taken to a weathervane maker/repairer who gave
us the bad news that the weathervane was not repairable.
The White Church steeple with a weathervane on top has been a landmark in
the area since 1851 when a spire was added to the church building. There
have been several weathervanes since then.
