Safety Concerns

For those families who wait for older siblings in

front of the school, we ask that you continue to

enforce the school’s rules. There should be no

wrestling, chasing, play fighting, etc. We also ask

that your children not play in the bushes, pick

flowers, etc. Please be mindful that school is still in

session.

If you plan to have snack after school, please

be conscious of students with allergies and eat in

appropriate areas. Our campus is a shared space

and we need to keep it safe for all students.

Safety Concerns:

❖Children must sit on bench until an adult escorts them to their car.

❖Children may not stand behind a car to load their own backpacks.

❖Adults should not walk children through or across parking lot, but use

sidewalks.

❖Do not take your child from dismissal line or area without notifying the

teaching parent who is in charge of your child’s safety.

❖Adult should always be at the front of the line when walking to curb or to any

other place on campus. DO NOT allow a child to be the first one to lead a

class. If worried about losing a child, assign a responsible child to be the

caboose for your line. Instruct them not to let anyone get behind them in the

line.

❖When picking up your child please show your child’s name card, and be

patient while the teaching parents attempt to load all of the children safely.

❖Please pull all the way down the curb, do not stop near your child for

convenience sake. We will walk you child to your car, but we need to get as

many cars lined up on our curb as possible.

❖Please drive safely through the parking lot.

Small Group

Management Procedures

For Teaching Parents

The following procedures will allow you to maintain positive control of

small groups. The same procedures may be used with larger groups of

children. It is important to be knowledgeable about these procedures,

implement them when appropriate, and be consistent!

Before the lesson:

1. Read the directions for the small group activity. If you do not

understand the activity, ask the teacher before you start working with the

children.

2. Make sure you know where you will be working and ensure that all

supplies you need are at your area. You may need to double-check the

materials in the baggie. There have been times when we are short of some

of the supplies.

3. Think about where you will have children sit. Some children will be

more successful if they are next to you. This may be because they need

some extra help, are shy, or need to be separated from someone else in the

group.

During:1.. Make sure that you have the attention of all of the children before

starting. Keep eye contact and make sure they can all hear you. Anticipate

and prevent distractions.

2. Show the example or the materials and explain the procedure for doing

the activity. Check for understanding, e.g. ask individual children to tell

you and the group what they are to do first, second, next, etc. Different

children can provide the answer to each of those questions. This keeps

them all thinking and paying attention to each other.

3. Provide positive feedback to those children that listened well and are

following directions. Here are some examples of things you can say: I like

the way you are working. You’re getting it! Sue is working quietly. You put a

lot of work into this. Super. I like the way John has settled down. Everyone is

working so hard. Much better. Terrific!

During:• 4. Be aware that our activities are often designed to have children really think.

Children need to learn to be positive contributors to the lesson. Interacting with each other in conversation or actions about the lesson is an important skill to learn. This behavior needs to be recognized by you. At the same time, make sure that one child does not dominate the discussion.

• 5. Children need to learn that being disruptive is not appropriate behavior during a lesson or classroom activity. Children being disruptive should be asked to stop, always reviewing what is acceptable. If the child continues, please inform the teacher right away.

• 6. It is vital that all children are listening and engaged. Watch and be aware of students that are losing interest and adapt lesson.

After:1. Please keep your group occupied while other groups are working.

You can have them read quiety, practice rhyming skills, counting aloud, count items, reading sight words etc. You can also ask them more questions about the skill or activity and encourage more language and a deeper understanding.

2. Please make sure you have gathered all of the materials, game pieces etc. and put all materials away-Thank you!

Cornerstone Class of 2018My son's Cornerstone class met yesterday to take a senior photo together for the high school yearbooks. Just for a

moment, it was like we were back in time to those golden days of Cornerstone Elementary School! You and your

child are just starting your journey...enjoy all of it!
