On October 29th, the Chamber along with the City of Lawrence, Douglas County, Lawrence Journal-World and the League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County will co-sponsor a community forum on job growth. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lawrence High School cafeteria, and I encourage you to come and participate.

Over the last ten months, we have heard a lot about job growth, or maybe more accurately, the lack of job growth in Lawrence and Douglas County. It is evident that beyond the short term issues that this present recession is creating, we need to get a better understanding of what limits job growth in our com-munity. We also need to come to some sort of agree-ment regarding what industries we want to grow and where we want to focus our economic development resources.

The first step in the process will occur on October 29th. This will be an evening event and will consist of small groups of people discussing job growth issues and reporting their findings to the larger group. Once the issues limiting job growth in the community have been identified and prioritized, the group will be asked to work on developing solutions to the issues that limit job growth. The final outcome of this fo-rum will be a listing of the issues that limit job growth and some proposed solutions to address those issues.

Tom Kern President&

CEO

This community forum is a cooperative effort be-tween the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, the City of Lawrence, Douglas County, Lawrence Journal-World and the League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County. This will be the first time in recent years that these five organizations have worked col-laboratively on a community issue.

Job growth is critical to the future of our commu-nity. Without it, there will be less resources to cover the community related expenses that define the great quality of life we have here.

I encourage you to come and participate on October 29th and be part of this exciting process.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

In January 2008, Johnson County Commu-nity College (JCCC) opened a small loca-tion in Lawrence at 2145 Louisiana Street (the former Centennial School) with the mission of providing career and technical training for Lawrence and Douglas County residents. A committee, comprised of rep-resentatives from USD 497, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and area manufac-turers, had been working toward the goal of expanding technical training in Douglas County for four years prior to JCCC open-ing its doors in a shared location with the Lawrence Virtual School in the heart of Lawrence.

“We had a very humble beginning,” said Loralee Stevens, assistant dean of commu-nity outreach at JCCC. “That first semes-ter in January 2008 we had an enrollment of 40 students. This fall we topped 200 students in 15 classes.”

The types of classes offered at JCCC in Lawrence are not in competition with the University of Kansas.

“JCCC’s presence in Lawrence is intended to support learning that is not in conflict with the mission of KU,” said Bill Osborn, associate vice president of instruction at JCCC. “We deliver programs that meet the needs of those seeking career or technical training.” Some of the classes that have been offered by JCCC in Lawrence are Certified Nurse Aide, Metal Fabrication and Welding, Perspectives on Hospitality Management, Workplace Skills, and Tech-nical Math.

JCCC in Lawrence offers more than just classroom space. The location has a resource room that provides informa-tion for prospective and current students.

“We get a lot of questions on the K-10 connector and how to order books online,” said Debbie Burns, reception staff member at the JCCC site.

There is always someone working at the location when classes are in session, providing a personal resource for those who stop in to ask questions or want to know how to apply for admission.

“We always try to answer students’ questions or direct them to the office or person on the main campus who can help them,” Burns said.

The proximity to home is another benefit for students wanting to start or continue college courses.

“Taking classes here in Lawrence is beneficial because I am closer to home and save time and money,” said Poppy Reumund who is taking classes at both JCCC and KU this semester. “I am also a KU student so JCCC in Lawrence allows me to take extra classes during the evening,” she said of her Certified Nurse Aide class.

“Offering classes in Lawrence provides potential students an opportunity to complete classes in a small, relaxed en-vironment without the commute,” said JCCC instructor Caroline Pravecek.

The classroom site is located within the school district in a former elementary school. It offers wireless Internet access and audiovisual equipment like the classrooms on campus.

“The Lawrence Public Schools are excited to have John-son County Community College as a local option for our students,” said Patrick Kelly, curriculum specialist in fine arts and career and technical education at Lawrence Pub-lic Schools. “JCCC’s presence helps our teachers and coun-selors educate our students and parents about the many options available to them. We hope to continue to build our relationship with JCCC to offer more curriculum and instructional opportunities for students in Lawrence.”

One example of collaboration with the local school dis-trict and JCCC is a health care class that meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4 to 6 p.m. Students earn four college credit hours for Health Careers 101 and Emergency Medical Sciences 121 at the Lawrence loca-tion. Students from both Lawrence High and Lawrence Free State have enrolled in this combined course the last two fall semesters. The courses review health career op-tions in detail, prepare students to be competitive for selective admission healthcare programs, and certify stu-dents in the necessary CPR to move forward for other healthcare classes.

“We are so pleased to be a part of the Lawrence commu-nity,” Stevens said. “At the Lawrence location we serve a diverse group of students as they start or continue their education.”

Welcome PIECE Project Class of 2010!

The PIECE Class of 2010 held its Opening Retreat on Sat-urday, August 29 at Fire Station #5. With the help of PIECE Curriculum Chair Kathy Branson, State Representative Barbara Ballard, Sara Dawson of Willis HRH and Glynn Sheridan of Sunflower Bank, the class got off to a great start. Rep. Ballard led the class through a forced choice exercise designed to help the members of the class get to know each other. Sara Dawson led the students through a learning styles activity, which will help the participants see how they learn, how they deal with new situations, and how they can work well as a group of individuals with different learning styles. Following this activity, a parent meeting was held while the PIECE class took a tour of the Fire Station. Through the generosity of Sunflower Bank and the skills of Chef Glynn Sheridan, a great meal was served to the families.
