Hello SOSC Members Recently, as I read my book Simple Abundance, one of the daily readings reminded me of our roles as Military Spouses. I thought I would share it with you all: "These are challenging times in which to live. But we are not the only generation of women to

days. It is comforting to realize that others before us have preserved and prospered. During the dark days of the Depression an editorial in the October 1932 issue of Ladies Home Journal encouraged readers to remember that " The return of good times is not wholly a matter of money. There is prosperity of living which is quite important as prosperity

of the pocketbook". But the magazine stressed that, " It is not enough to be willing to make the  best of things as they are. Resignation will get us nowhere. We must build what amounts to a new country. We must revive the ideals of the founders. We must learn the new values of money. It is time for pioneering - to create a new security for the home and the

family...Where we were specialists in spending, we are becoming specialists in living." This passage inspired many 'pioneering women' to step up and make a difference. We too can be pioneers and make a difference. Investing your talents, experience

and your creative energy will truly make a positive difference for the SOSC this upcoming board year! Please let us know how you'd like to contribute in order to make our club continue with this positive momentum. We look forward to seeing you at

We are still looking for board members for the following positions:

Scholarships Chair

Various Supporting Roles

Please e-mail Deb Arquiette via [email protected] if you’re interested!

Associate MembersWe don’t believe the camaraderie ends with retirement...we have a lot of living to share!

Just who is an Associate Member?

Associate spouses share all the privileges of regular members except the right to hold the

President or 1st Vice President board position. They may, however, hold governing board positions

and vote at meetings. OSC dues are $40.00 annually for associate members. Associate members

who are widows or widowers do not pay dues.

If your spouse recently retired, or has been retired and your life style has changed in such a way

that you can now participate in additional activities, come on out and join the fun and adventure.

Please, don’t let the words “retired spouse” frighten you. Our membership includes men and

women of all ages and backgrounds. The primary purpose of our group is to relax, enjoy

fellowship, and share common interests.

We meet bi-monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Usually, two or three ladies

volunteer to be hostess for the month’s meeting. Typically, they organize a luncheon at a nearby

restaurant and send out information concerning the event. We also use this newsletter to

publicize our events.

If you have further questions or would like more information on the Associate spouse group,

please e-mail our Associate Spouse chairperson at [email protected].

A Big Air Show Thank You Shout Out!!

The Air Show is one of our largest fundraisers for the year. There were 62 private organizations applying to work 41 of the possible concession stands. The Private Organization office paired up organizations so that everyone could participate. We were fortunate to work with the First Four Organization, whose volunteers cooked the chicken tenders & french fries. We sold over $11,000 over the weekend and the SOSC will receive 10% of the proceeds.

The weather was pleasant & we had lots of time to meet new friends. Thanks to the support of the Kohls’ Associates in Action program, we will receive an additional $500 from our fundraiser. All proceeds will be deposited on our Charitable side for scholarships, scholastic grants & charitable distributions.

Thank you to the following volunteers that were so generous with their time and talents: Deb Arquiette, Andrea Barnes, Amy Bogan, Yvonne Callaway, Carol Carlson, Angela Cawdery, Sheri Chandler, Wayne Clough, Katy Cole, Bea Donelson, Tammye Gerdes, Kristin Gittner, Susan Green, Marcie Hermann, Tony &

The September luncheon was a huge success! We had 130 members attend, new vendors, wonderful singing, and a fantastic speaker! Mary Engelbreit was so inspired after our event that she went home to her studio and started working on more cards!

We asked Mary for a comment about the day:

“Will and I were so impressed with the optimism and can-do spirit of everyone we met! Neither of us can imagine having to start over as often as you all do, but everyone seemed to be great friends at the luncheon, whether they just met or had been there for a

while. And we instantly felt like old friends, too! Thanks so much for inviting us!”

Constitution & By-Laws

The 2012-2013 Executive Board spent many hours over the summer on the constitution & by-laws. They researched the SOSC papers from 2004-2006, 2011-2012 as well as a template provided from the AFOWC. Using all three documents the board came up with new, very detailed, constitution & by-laws. Many thanks for the votes at our event on September 12. Please look over the documents as they provide information regarding membership, attending events, committee members and POC’s, etc. For more information, check them out at www.scottosc.com.

SOSC & SOSC Budgets

Thank you for your recent vote on the updated budgets. We apologize that there wasn't more discussion regarding the changes. We wanted to make the changes more apparent, so we listed the actual expenses from last year, the approved May vote & then the proposed changes for the fall. Please take a look at them on the SOSC website.

For the social side, we added the vendor table income and advertising income to the budget & moved the opportunity sales over to the charitable side. The major changes on the Charitable side were adding the opportunity income and including a line for the Kohl’s Donation. We also detailed out the Charitable donations with a small amount left over for unexpected requests throughout the year.
