Welcome to another year and another wonderful programme of films at the Delphi Bank 23rd Greek Film Festival. Your favourite ingredients are all present and accounted for: you’ll find an exciting schedule of Australian and world premieres, Q&A sessions with a rollcall of great filmmakers, actors, and academics, the Greek-Australian Short Film Festival and a retrospective which will transport you to another era of Greek filmmaking.

This year’s Festival is bookended by the films of Christopher Papakaliatis, one of Greece’s most-admired contemporary directors. He has starred in and directed our Opening Night and Closing Night films, Worlds Apart and What If... Both films were box-office hits in Greece and we are sure that Australian audiences will embrace them with the same vigour.

Greece’s Golden Age of Cinema produced many stars, but few shine as brightly as the incomparable Thanasis Veggos, one of the best comic actors of all time who has rightly been described as the ‘Greek Charlie Chaplin’. Do not miss this rare opportunity to see his work on the big screen.

Greek film has enjoyed many successes over the past year and Greek filmmakers have been showered with awards and praise for their innovation. None more so than Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) and Athina Rachel Tsangari (Chevalier), both of whom have films screening during the Festival.

We are extremely thankful to all of our partners and sponsors who are acknowledged in this programme for the essential support that they provide. We thank them enormously for their belief in us which assists us in bringing you this exciting selection of Greek features, documentaries and shorts. We also thank you for embracing the Greek Film Festival as a vibrant and vital cultural exchange.

We hope the stories and ideas you experience at this year’s Festival will stay with you long after the closing night.

After smashing Greek box office records with his spirited debut film, What If…, Christopher Papakaliatis returns to tackle the three pillars of writing, directing and acting with this deeply tender tale of cross-continental love.

Papakaliatis consolidates his canny ability to interweave narratives by presenting a trio of tonally incongruent stories, all set in contemporary Athens and all involving romance between a Greek and a foreigner. With an abundance of affection, humour and gravitas, each story climbs its climactic mountain before shifting to the next. Yet, somehow, all three come together at the end in a way we never anticipate.

Despite their rocky roads to love and the complications of today, Worlds Apart serves as a poetic reminder that truth, beauty and humanity exist even in our darkest hours.

Winner of the Hellenic Film Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (the late Minas Hatzisavvas) and starring the winner of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, 2015).

DATE NIGHT

Fly Emirates to Athens via Dubai.

It might not be a dream date, but it comes pretty close. Enjoy a four-course dinner, with complimentary* drinks and a choice of movies and box sets.

A recent Greek classic and the Opening Night feature of the 2013 GFF returns by popular demand for a very special encore festival season.

Two opposing perspectives are masterfully teased out in Christopher Papakaliatis’ Sliding Doors-inspired style of storytelling: One perspective from a confirmed bachelor, and the other from a couple in love.

Demetris (played by Papakaliatis himself) shares his relatively normal life with a German Shepherd dog. When his canine friend begs to be walked one night, he unwittingly stands on the precipice of a life-changing decision – something the audience knows, even if he does not. Will Demetris go out tonight and meet Christina (Marina Kalogirou), the love of his life? Or will he just stay home?

Whatever Demetris’ decision, the results are anything but black and white in this duet of contrasting tales that come with their own kind of happiness… and tragedy.

Βγάζοντας ένα βράδυ το σκύλο του βόλτα, ο Δημήτρης θα γνωρίσει τη Χριστίνα, την οποία και θα ερωτευτεί. Πώς όμως θα εξελισσόταν η ζωή του αν εκείνο το βράδυ έμενε στο σπίτι;

Magiki Polis (1955). It was not until 1962, however, that he would secure his first major role in the anti-war comedy, Hands Up Hitler, and then his star would meteorically rise.

In 1995, Veggos appeared alongside Harvey Keitel in Theo Angelopoulos’ Ulysses Gaze. In 2008, the Greek President Karolos Papoulias appointed him Commander of the Order of the Phoenix.

In 2011, the whole of Greece mourned when Thanasis Veggos died aged 84 after suffering a severe stroke. This year’s Greek Film Festival pays tribute to the little big man with five classic films seldom screened outside of Greece in a special retrospective, from the subversively political to the outright ridiculously hilarious.

This is our small Greek-Australian way of saluting the great Thanasis Veggos, Καλέ µου άνθρωπε (my good man).

This mini retrospective has been madepossible due to the support of Finos Film. All associated screening fees will be donated to the Actor’s House in Athens;a charity established over 25 years agoto support Greek actors.

“I work instinctively, I have no talent, just this face. Here is imprinted all the misery, all the adversity, all the pain of the insignificant Greek.” Thanasis Veggos

One of the best comedic actors of all time – the ‘Greek Charlie Chaplin’ – made a living out of playing the every man, putting so much of himself into his roles that his characters often bore his name: Thanasis.

Having starred in over 50 films and roles from klutz to anti-hero, Thanasis Veggos defined the masculinity of a generation and represented everything Greece had to smile about during the ‘50s and ‘60s Golden Age of Cinema. He never studied acting; he was a natural from the school of slapstick and became renowned for performing his own stunts, even the insanely dangerous ones.

Exiled to Makronisos from 1948 to 1950 during the Greek Civil War because of his political beliefs, Veggos fortuitously met fellow exile, filmmaker Nikos Koundouros, which lead to his break in Koundouros’ film,

HOLIDAYS IN VIETNAMDICTATOR CALLS THANASIS

Thanasis Veggos does what he does best – explores the predicament of an ordinary individual who unknowingly becomes part of the larger political picture.

While trying to take a photograph, a lowly yet ambitious photojournalist finds himself the sole witness to the death of a dictator. He is also inadvertently handed the code to the dictator’s bank account, which his children are desperate to obtain.

Dictator Calls Thanasis is particularly interesting in its prophesising of the fall of the Greek dictator George Papadopoulos during his decline in 1973.

A stunningly insightful and successful anti-war comedy about the conflict in Vietnam and the way it impacted the lives of ordinary people.

Returning after three years of war-time captivity, a kind and generous chemist finds his wife married to his former boss and profiting from his own invention.

Holidays in Vietnam was banned by the Greek dictatorship at the time and remains one of Veggos’ most political films.

THANASIS IN THE LAND OF SLAPSTHE CARELESS IDIOT

The form of the traditional feature film gets subverted in this experimental comedy divided into two parts, written and directed by different filmmakers.

Both parts have one thing in common: an average fellow is forced to make his own personal revolution against an oppressive dictatorship to protect his friends from being arrested and tortured.

In part one, this all takes place during the 1936 Metaxas dictatorship where Veggos plays a clown to cover the resistance of his young colleague against the police state. In the second part, we’re taken to the 1967 Colonel dictatorship and its absurd policies.

Professor Vrasidas Karalis (University of Sydney) will attend the session on Sunday 16 October at Palace Norton Street and take part in a Q&A following the film.

In his first colour film, Thanasis Veggos looks at the ‘American Dream’ with all its hopes and bitter disappointments, as seen through the eyes of Greek immigrants.

A poor man has one purpose in life: to immigrate to America. But when that moment comes thanks to the help of a loyal friend and his fiancée, he gets sidetracked and all dreams of greater things fall through.

While not the most commercially successful of Veggos’ films, The Careless Idiot is notable for kickstarting a new chapter of his artistic development in psychological comedies.

THE CHARLATAN

One of the more humanistic comedies from Thanasis Veggos highlights the cruel reception endured by Greek migrants from the new establishment of the dictatorship in Greece.

A Greek gastarbeiter (guest worker) arrives home from Germany to his native Greek village to visit his dying father. The thing is, he has returned illegally, and two advertising firms jump on this predicament as an opportunity to make money.

A film that presents issues as salient today as when they occurred over 40 years ago.

Stampeding onto the film festival circuit and taking audiences by surprise is newcomer Joyce A. Nashawati with her pre-apocalyptic slow-burn, Blind Sun – “a mystery film in daylight”, as she chooses to describe it.

It is the near future in Greece and it is hot. Damn hot. A foreigner in his 40s looks after a French expat’s seaside villa on a desolate stretch of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. A policeman takes his residents permit, the unbearable heat results in water shortages and the locals eye him with distrust in a pressure-cooker environment that looks set to explode.

With this extraordinary debut, Nashawati washes us in an evocative wave of juxtaposing imagery, drawing on the cinematographic expertise of veteran Yorgos Arvanitis (a regular collaborator with Theo Angelopoulos). The result is an

unsettling and claustrophobic story about psychological and environmental collapse.

“Impressively juggles genre contrivances and a dense personal drama on social dynamics.” Cineuropa.

“A startlingly bold and confident debut.”TIFF

Continuing to fly the flag for the Greek Weird Wave in the most brilliant of ways is filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari’s feminist portrait of men without women – a gentle, critical comedy that knows how far to push.

Six average guys are on a private yacht in the Aegean Sea for who-really-knows-what reason. When a mechanical hiccup leaves them marooned at sea, they choose to wile away the time playing a game of one-upmanship called ‘Chevalier’.

Amid the penis measuring, Ikea furniture assemblage and comparison of cellular ringtones, an insightful and wry unpicking of human male pack behaviour occurs, as well as the revelation of personalities within the pack. But, as one of the participants admits, “Even if you win, it doesn’t mean you’re best in general.”

Winner of Best Film at the Thessaloniki Film Festival 2015 and London Film Festival 2015, and Best Screenplay at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards 2016.

With Invisible, filmmaker Dimitris Athanitis adeptly draws from western tropes to tell of a gritty fight against injustice in urban Greece.

In a career-defining, bravura performance, Yannis Stankoglou (who also appears in this year’s Blind Sun) plays Aris – a 38-year-old factory worker who is fired without warning. He is floored by the shock and any attempts to be re-hired fail miserably. As his distress builds, he becomes more and more fixated on taking justice into his own hands but even these plans are thwarted when his ex-wife saddles him with their six-year-old son.

With eerie accuracy and detail, Athanitis shows how the powerless and undervalued can be society’s most dangerous time bombs… just waiting to explode.

If you thought the western genre only exists against the prairies of an American frontier, think again.

In this inspired culture-clash comedy, filmmaker Aron Lehman makes light of the stereotypical distrust of Greeks by Germans when he sends Joerg Geissner, employee of the Munich AVA Bank, to the island of Paladiki to check on a loan granted years ago.

The registered securities used for this loan – a hospital and power-generating plant – appear not to exist. Not that anyone will admit that. Geissner gets sent on a wild goose chase as the locals do all they can to continue the charade and save their already destitute island, even trying to pass a decrepit sheep-pen for a power plant.

The closer Geissner gets to the truth, the fonder he becomes of the island and soon he has to make an important decision: the bank or the people of Paladiki.

Interestingly, Highway to Hellas tickled the fancy of Asian cinemagoers, taking out the Audience Award at Busan International Film Festival 2015.

Today’s toxic Greco-German relations are played out against a parent’s worst nightmare in Christian Zubert’s at once stunning and disarming One Breath.

The heart–stopping drama begins with a young Greek immigrant, Elena, arriving in Frankfurt, discovering she is in the early stages of pregnancy and then accepting a job as a nanny for a well-heeled couple, Tessa and Jan, and their cherubic daughter, Lotte. Given Tessa’s neuroses, the job is anything but easy for Elena, yet nothing can prepare her for that instant when she turns her back on Lotte’s stroller only for her to disappear.

Just as we hit this point of maximum suspense, Christian Zubert changes storytelling tack and regresses back in time so we can see things differently from Tessa’s perspective. What follows is a kaleidoscope

of raw, jagged emotion and a brutal wake-up call for making rash decisions at moments of peak stress.

Taking the sub-genre of psychological drama on a existential odyssey is Australian filmmaker Kosta Nikas’ corrosive feature film debut, Sacred Heart.

A layered film, Sacred Heart shows no fear in the face of controversy tackling the most inflammatory of issues such as abortion, celibacy in the clergy and the sanctity of confession without ever taking the foot off the throttle.

Stories of terminal cancer are unlikely to be audience favourites but SMAC well and truly bucks this trend with its profound, loving and ultimately fulfilling depiction of one woman’s fight against her mortality.

In a career-defining, tour-de-force performance, Evangelia Andreadaki plays Eleni – a middle-aged woman who has just been diagnosed with cancer. After overcoming the initial shock, she’s given a chance to look at her life in a different way. She brings a homeless man into her home to stave off her fear of dying alone but soon realises it is not death she fears – it is something else.

Winner of the Best Actress prize at theHellenic Film Academy Awards 2016.

Just as American filmmaker Larry Clark controversially captured the ferocity of maligned youth with Kids, so does Constantine Giannaris (From the Edge of the City (GFF 1999), One Day in August (GFF 2002)) with Spring Awakening – but this time tapping into a vein that is manifestly contemporary Greece.

It’s the birth of another summer in Athens, and a group of five disenfranchised teenagers – armed with guns and romanticised Bonnie-and-Clyde ideals – embark on a rampage across a city reeling under social and economic collapse. Their reality is a complex mosaic of adolescent love, failed family units and youthful nihilism, and one that doesn’t bode well for fairytale happy-endings.

Constantine Giannaris’ cautionary tale may be extreme in its vision but, nonetheless,

strikes squarely at the heart of one of Greece’s most salient issues: if there’s no hope in our youth, what hope do we have for the future?

Winner of the Audience Award for Greek Films at the Thessaloniki Film Festival 2015.

Some Bronze. Others Burn.

The hedonistic shenanigans of summer take a creepy turn into dark territory with Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ unsettling depiction of a lonely, middle-aged doctor who takes an unhealthy shine to a young tourist.

Kostis (a remarkably raw performance by Makis Papadimitriou, also appearing in Chevalier in this year’s program) arrives on the little island of Antiparos in the middle of winter where he is the new GP. What starts as a drab community transforms into an island paradise as soon as the summer swings around. When the much younger, sexually liberated tourist Anna arrives, Kostis does everything he can to impress her, even if it means outstaying his welcome.

A visually seductive depiction of a Greek summer, Suntan is an enthralling exercise

in voyeurism and the violent depths of one man’s obsession.

“Feels at times like your pervy uncle has somehow wandered into 1982’s Summer Lovers.” Film School Rejects.

“Midlife crises don’t get much messier than [this].”Screen Daily

Iconoclastic filmmaking team Yorgos Lanthimos and writer Efthymis Filippou make a bravura English language debut, which is – as its absurd title fails to suggest – a love story set in a dystopian future.

In this future, according to the rules of The City, single people are arrested and transferred to The Hotel. Upon check-in, they are obliged to find a love match in 45 days and, if they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods.

Colin Farrell puts forward a career-best performance as a desperate Man who escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live. Unwittingly, he falls in love (with Rachel Weisz), although ‘coupling’ is against the rules of The Loners who live in proud defiance of The City.

“Watching the film is like observing some alien game played in front of you, the pleasure derived both from puzzling out the rules and the surprise of what is or is not allowed, how it must be played.” MUBI’s Notebook.

After a high-profile television journalism career, Helen Kapalos took out a loan for kitchen renovations that never happened, and invested the money into her first feature film – a deeply personal documentary about medical marijuana.

The project was born from one of her reports: a young man called Dan Haslam, his battle with cancer and his usage of marijuana to relieve excruciating physical pain. Couple that story with the one of Helen Kapalos’ mother who also suffered for many years at the mercy of cancer, and Kapalos found herself propelled on an international fact-finding mission that would lead her from Australia’s black market to radical (yet legal) research in Israel.

Speaking to The Greek Reporter, Kapalos said, “This feels like the most important thing that I have ever done in my life.” What

she has achieved is not only a gripping, emotional human narrative but also a convincing clarion call for change.

Director Helen Kapalos will attend the session on Saturday 22 October at Palace Norton Street and take part in a Q&A following the film.

THE TRUTH ABOUTMEDICAL MARIJUANA

A series of secret journals were found buried beneath an olive tree on the island of Trikeri, the site of a concentration camp during the Greek Civil War of 1946 to 1949. Inside were stories of thousands of everyday women –political exiles – accused of crimes they did not commit.

Despite being suppressed for years, their stories were so fierce they stretched across the decades to inspire a young Greek woman in New York, Stavroula Toska, to track down the few surviving women who were teenagers at the time. Two of the original notebook writers even emerged. And little did she know that asking her own mother a simple question about the civil war would change her life forever.

Narrated by Toska’s mentor Olympia Dukakis – and using an evocative combination of archival footage, contemporary interviews

and motion capture technology – Beneath the Olive Tree is an expose of courage, ideals, forgiveness, healing, and the important role our past plays in our present and future.

Winner of the Van Vlahakis Award for Innovative Filmmaking at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival.

A Sydney-sider by background, writer-director Billy Cotsis has dedicated his life to documenting the worldwide Greek Diaspora, and never so passionately as this cinematic love letter to Lesbos. Spending more than a year in Lesbos afforded Billy the opportunity to get under the skin of Lesbos village life and know it like a local – so much so, he now refers to Lesbos in the first-person possessive of ‘our’.

Teaming up with London filmmaker Basil Genimahaliotis and another Sydney cohort, the group set out on a road-trip to uncover all that is unique and wonderful about Lesbos, as well as the current refugee crisis that has well and truly hit the island. They have some laughs as they look into the making of ouzo, discover must-see sights and pay homage to Sappho, the first everlesbian.

A number of local identities and award-winning Turkish actress, Ayca Damgaci, also make an appearance.

January 2015. A radical left party called Syriza wins the Greek elections. With over 50% youth unemployment, unimaginable public debt and the people struggling under crippling austerity measures, Syriza and its charismatic leader, Alexis Tsipras, is handed a clear mandate for change.

In this four-part unravelling of events, Theopi Skarlatos and Paul Mason look at how Syriza won, what they did, how they clashed with the global financial system and how it all ended. Fully exploiting their unprecedented access to politicians and venturing behind the doors where decisions were made, they chronicle a ‘war’ that highlights the democratic deficit at the heart of the EU.

Underpinning all this political posturing is also a strong vein of hope. As Skarlatos told The Voice of Europe, “The people always felt they were stronger than the politicians who

eventually didn’t live up to the promises they made back in January.”

3“The extraordinary resilience of the Greek people – in retreat but notdefeated – is a key message of the film.” Filmmaker Theopi Skarlatos

At the turn of the 20th century, approximately 500 Greeks (mostly Cretans found themselves working in deplorable conditions in the Rockefeller Colorado coalmines.

In 1913, they joined with fellow immigrants and waged a landmark uprising. The confrontation culminated in a bloody clampdown in April 1914 – the Ludlow Massacre – after the Colorado national guard raided a tent colony inhabited by more than 1,200 miners and their families, leaving an estimated 20 people dead.

By digging up very rare archival materials and presenting them with interviews from family members of the miners, this documentary is a one-of-a-kind moving image tribute to a proud yet bloody page in American labour history, not often written about in books mainly due to Rockefeller’s attempts to erase it.

GREEKSTUDENTFILMFESTIVAL

The Greek Student Film Festival returns for a 6th year, presenting a selection of imaginative films from primary and secondary students studying the Greek language.

The Greek Student Film Festival continues to offer students the opportunity to use the Greek language in creative and innovative ways, whilst simultaneously encouraging the preservation of Greek culture.

The project in New South Wales is presented by the following organisations: The Greek Film Festival, Greek Orthodox Community of NSW and the Education Office of the Greek Consulate General. This initiative has the support of the NSW Department of Education.

In order to be eligible, the films must be a short fiction, animation or documentary and must incorporate the chosen theme. This year’s theme is ’FROM MORNING TO NIGHT’ and is open to the interpretation and creativity of the students and teachers involved. Each short must also include the ‘signature item’, which this year is a CLOCK.

The films will be screened at the Delphi Bank 23rd Greek Film Festival at Palace Cinemas, where cash prizes will be awarded.
