Airbus Little Engineer

The Airbus Little Engineer is an award winning initiative dedicated to educating young increasing public understanding and appreciation of science technology, engineering and mathematics through interactive tailored programs.Based on the industry's growth figures and discussions with key players in the region's aerospace sector, Airbus recognized that in order to sustain the future growth of industry minds and the Africa and Middle East's aerospace and economy, there's a need to inspire more of the region's youth to focus on their science and technology studies. With that in mind, Airbus decided that investing in students' future career choices would help in fueling their potential for innovation in the aerospace sector. This passion would also contribute towards creating talent that the global aerospace industry can attract nurture and retain. Airbus Little

Engineer is an initiative dedicated to instilling an appreciation of science and technology among the talent of the region. Since its launch in 2012, the Airbus Little Engineer program has successfully positioned itself as an effective vehicle for discovery-based learning, working to enlighten and empower youth in the areas of science and technology through robotics and aerospace. To date, the Airbus Little Engineer initiative has inspired over 6,000 students, whom have taken part in its activities in over 12 countries.

A Childs mind is like a sponge. Early stimulation and exposure is critical in their development. If you miss this ‘window’ opportunity, it may be a challenge to regain and built the interest when they’re older. Most of us did our Math and Physics not because we liked it or enjoyed it but we were just told, that to get a good pay cheque and live a comfortable life, we’d probably need to do it. (They were wrong)

How times have changed. That mentality doesn’t necessarily guarantee that comfortable life. One thing that the World of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics does, is open up yourmind into solving the complex problems of todays world and its future. My short lived experience with the Little Engineer Foundation allowed me to share and to be a part of instilling what could be a passion to the students we managed to reach, by introducing them to theworld of space exploration through robotics. I was inspired myself. In SA, the ages between 15-17 have become a very crucial stage with teens battling with substance abuse, pregnancy and poverty. To have been part of something that shifts the attention from all of that and inspire the youth to the exciting opportunities that STEM has, was an amazing experience. The workshop were delivered in an easy-effective way. The concept was basically taking theoretical understanding and expressing it practically. I saw the students practice soft skills including teamwork, communication, critical thinking, public speaking and creativity. It was exciting to see the curiosity, frustration and excitement in their faces through the workshops we had.The team we got to work with (Mohamad and Joey) was great, glad to have met them. Most of all, we had so much fun. Thank you so much. Kind Regards Heidi MALINGAAircraft Maintenance EngineerOperationsAirbus Helicopters

Two members from the winning startup received an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in a future TechCrunch Disrupt in San

Francisco. After a day of incredibly fierce competition, the winner was announced. “Buildink” won the competition; this startup offers a solution for real estate construction firms, via a scalable and mobile-friendly robot concrete 3D printer and signature concrete mixture. The company says 3D printing will not only open the space for unlimited architectural designs, but also reduce the overall construction cost. The event kicked off with a panel between Imad Kreidieh, Chairman and General Director of Ogero Telecom, and Ari Kesisoglu from Facebook discussing the Telco industry and how it is changing in Lebanon and the region, and how this translates in the business world.Kesisoglu, Vice President, Middle East, Turkey, and Africa at FBstart said: “As Facebook, we recognize the potential of entrepreneurial talent in the region and we want to help them develop their digital skills so they

expand their businesses and create new jobs. That’s why we are very excited about TechCrunch Startup Battlefield MENA.”For his part, Kreidieh encouraged the startups, “providing an adequate infrastructure is a key point in retaining talent in Lebanon, but we also need to have legislation that helps young entrepreneurs access the market.”The 15 teams competed in three preliminary rounds, consisting of five startups per round. They had six minutes to pitch and present a live demo to the panel of judges who were expert technologists and VC investors in their respective fields. One of the judges, Rana El Chemaitelly, founder of The Little Engineer, expressed her joy that BDD has become a key technological and co-work hub attracting people with an intellectual and IT background to create a whole new work sector for the Lebanese economy.(source: en.annahar.com/article)

Today bionic arms use vibrations and a sensory illusion to give wearers a natural sense of their robotic appendage moving through space. Even when blindfolded and wearing noise-canceling headphones, subjects know what their arms are doing. Controlling a robotic limb with your brainwaves seems routine by placing several motors and sensors into the bionic limbs capable of fine, dexterous movement. This Technology has advanced to a degree where some appendages can send feelings of touch back to their wearer for sensation. The main issue was that without a direct visual, the wearer does not know what their bionic arm is doing, its position in space, and how fast it’s moving. Let’s just say it would be relatively impossible to eat popcorn while keeping your eyes on the big screen. New devices restore kinesthesia by causing tendons to vibrate which makes it feel like the joint is moving. Volunteers undergo surgery to rewire the nerves in their upper bodies to other muscles. For example, the nerve that controls the elbow is hooked up to chest muscles. When the patient thinks about moving his elbow, the nerve sends the command to the

chest muscle. This activity is then picked up by a sensor that makes the prosthetic arm’s elbow to move.

Scientists developed a neural-machine interface with two lines of communication. When the patient thinks about moving the bionic arm, the signal is picked up from the re- muscle to control the prosthesis, and then a small but powerful motor is triggered to vibrate the muscle, generating the kinesthetic illusion. The improvement was evident within minutes. Using computer simulation software, the volunteers could easily close their virtual prosthetic hands a quarter, half, or three quarters of the way without watching the hand. In contrast, with the vibrations turned off they performed significantly worse—one patient had nearly no sense of hand position without adding the hack.

The results were remarkable. Even with blindfolds and noise-canceling headphones on to block off the world, the volunteers easily followed instructions to close the bionic hand into a cylinder grip. The vibrations blurred the lines between human limb and machine in the patients’ brains. The bionic hand felt like their own.The ultimate goal is to integrate bionic limbs that feel touch, movement, temperature, kinesthesia, and other senses to run simultaneously in the same bionic arm. So, when patients think about moving the arm, they feel that it’s moving through space and when they grab something, they feel that touch as though it’s theirs.Reference: https://singularityhub.com/2018/04/04/new-bionic-arm-blurs-line-between-self-and-machine-for-wearers/#sm.0001i5hj0c201dm210kxvpecyudbc
