Historic Cancer Research Effort Community Involvement Can Answer Critical Questions about Cancer Causes, Prevention

Submitted by Lourdes Hospital

Residents of western Kentucky and southern Illinois have an op-portunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and

women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diag-nosed with cancer are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 will enroll a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States. The opportunity for local residents to enroll in CPS-3 is being made possible in partnership with Lourdes Hospital in Paducah during November 15–17. CPS-3 will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, envi-ronmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. To enroll in the study, individuals will go to a local enrollment loca-tion and will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. The in-person enrollment process takes approximately 20–30 minutes to complete. At home, individuals will complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for informa-tion on lifestyle, behavioral and other factors related to their health. Upon completion of this process, the Society will continue to send periodic follow-up surveys to update participant information and an-nual newsletters with study updates and results. The initial and follow-up surveys completed at home will take an hour or less of time to complete and are expected to be sent every few years. “Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Alpa V. Patel, PhD, principal investigator of CPS-3. “CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer.” Dr. Patel added, “Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks, and we can only do this if members of the community are willing to become involved.” Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s that collectively have involved millions of volunteer participants. The Hammond-Horn Study and previous Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS-I and CPS-II) have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommenda-tions. Those studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstrated the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and other causes, and showed the considerable impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions. The current study, CPS-II, began in 1982 and is still ongoing. But changes in lifestyle and in the understanding of cancer in the

more than two decades since its launch make it important to begin a new study. The voluntary, long-term commitment by participants is what will produce benefits for decades to come. “Taking an hour or so every few years to fill out a survey— and potentially save someone from being diagnosed with cancer in the future—is a commitment that thousands of volunteer participants have already made. We're look-ing for more like-minded individuals in the Paducah area to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations,” said Dr. Patel.

• Hot flashes• Irregular menstrual periods• Sleeping difficulty• Vaginal dryness• Mood Swings

In most instances, a hot flash involves a sensation of head pressure, feelings of heat spreading throughout the upper body and face, flushing with red blotchy skin on the face, neck and upper chest, a rapid heart-beat, perspiration and feeling chilled when the hot flash eases. In addi-tion, some women experience weakness, fatigue, and dizziness during a hot flash. Also known as night sweats, nighttime hot flashes are common and wake some women up from a sound sleep to sheets drenched in their own perspiration. This can be a very emotional time for women.

Hot flashes can be different for everyone, such as: • Several per day vs. a few per week• Persistent sweating day and night vs. occasional feelings of warmth • Duration of a few minutes vs. half an hour

Women with greater hot flash severity are more than likely to seek help from a massage therapist, alternative healthcare provider, or a conventional doctor.

Massage Can Help With Hot Flashes

By Jenny Stephens, LMT

Massage and Reflexology can help ease women's hot flashes. Massage therapists who incorporate mindfulness-based stress reduction training into their practice can give meno-

pausal clients with this symptom an additional tool for hot flash relief. Defined as the final menstrual period and usually confirmed when a woman has missed her period for 12 consecutive months, menopause is a natural event. Despite menopause being a normal part of the aging process, its symptoms present a challenge to many women. As one of the main symptoms of menopause, hot flashes frequently arise as a massage therapy client's main complaint. A skilled massage therapist has several bodywork approaches to choose from to offer his or her clients hot flash relief.

MENOPAUSE AND HOT FLASHES This is the end of fertility for women; the symptoms of menopause are the direct result of changing estrogen and progesterone levels. The physical signs of menopause begin many years before the final men-strual period. Known as perimenopause, the transition between being fertile and menopause can last six years or more—ending one full year after a woman's final menstrual period. While there are many different ways in how a woman experiences menopause, those who have early or induced menopause typically ex-perience more prominent symptoms. The most common complaints of perimenopause include:

EASING HOT FLASHES Because bodywork has the potential to rebalance hormone levels, massage therapists can help their clients through some of the discom-forts associated with menopause. The following massage modalities may help ease hot flashes:• Swedish Massage: Many studies have found a direct link between stress

and menopausal symptom severity. Since Swedish massage is extremely beneficial to relieving stress, it also can lessen menopausal symptoms.

• Reflexology: Utilizing pressure points on the foot that correlate with the internal organs, this modality may help balance the hormones. Experts suggest areas that correspond with the kidney, adrenals, pituitary, brain, uterus, thyroid, heart, and liver for this purpose. In-dividuals have reflex points on the hands and feet for every internal organ, bones, and muscles of the body.

Lifestyle changes are an integral part of any natural approach to treating hot flashes and the massage therapist's first line of defense in treating hot flashes is a soothing massage that increases endorphins and reduces stress. Pressing special reflex points on the great toes and thumbs can help ease hot flashes. When seeing female clients in their late 40s and 50s, hot flashes are likely to be a dominant health complaint. Working with massage techniques that induce relaxation and help balance hormonal levels can benefit menopausal clients. Some factors that might trigger hot flashes can be the reaction to thoughts and emotions. Spicy food, hot drinks, alcohol, sugar, caffeine, stress, heated environments, and tobacco also might be triggers.

They can be short, lasting only a few seconds or as long as 30 min-utes, although most diminish after 5 minutes. They can occur every hour or occasionally. They can disturb sleep at night or creep up at any time during the day, and they can drag on for years, well into menopause. Simple lifestyle changes include wearing layers of loose clothing made of natural fibers, exercising daily, sipping a cool drink at the onset of a hot flash, avoiding excess alcohol and avoiding spicy food and caf-feine. Employing stress reduction techniques such as massage, reflex-ology, yoga, and meditation can help ease symptoms. Also, stopping smoking, sleeping in a cool room, keeping a fan and cold packs handy, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day can also help. Women can't avoid menopause, it is just a matter of normal aging, and these power surges are an annoying part of it. But women can be more in control of their bodies by adopting simple lifestyle changes and understanding that this, too, shall pass

MASSAGE DOES A BODY GOOD: Massage gets the blood and lymph o flowing. Individuals that re-ceive regular massages do not get sick as often as individuals who do not receive regular massages. Plus, massage is very relaxing and rejuvenating. For an hour or more, you get to go on vacation without ever leaving town!

For most every major as-pect of life we have a plan. We plan for a family, plan

a vacation, plan a wedding, and plan for retirement. We prepare for the “what ifs” in life such as a fire, accident, or flood. Yet, because most of us do not like to think about death, we avoid making important decisions about our funeral in advance. It is important to plan ahead now more than ever. Life is more complicated, family members live away from one another, and every household is feeling the impact of inflation. When family members have to make funeral arrangements directly following a loved one’s death, they are usually con-fused and upset. Often times, they do not have the informa-tion needed to claim benefits. Every year millions of insurance and government dollars go un-claimed. Pre-planning keeps emotional overspending from happening and protects the family’s best interests while al-lowing the loved one’s wishes to be met.

Why should we think about pre-arranging a funeral?• The family: Without a doubt

the most important reason for making funeral and other estate plans in advance is to take away this responsibility from family members during the difficult time. At the time of planning a funeral, there are so many decisions to be made. By arranging these decisions ahead of time, it al-lows you and your loved ones to make logical, well thought out plans that your family will appreciate later.

• Lower Costs: Most of us today have life insurance or retirement funds set aside for the living, not to meet the needs of the cost of the funeral. Yet, in many situations, funds invested today will be enough to cover the total cost of a funeral when it is needed. The interest earned by the account or policy will help offset the effects of inflation. Government regulations protect investments so the funds will always be ready for your family’s use.

• Securing Benefits: Given the number of changes to govern-ment benefits over the years regarding Social Security, Veterans’ Benefits, and Medicaid it is imperative for each person to know of these revisions and how to safeguard those benefits prior to needing them.

• Peace of Mind: Often times, we have certain desires such as where to be buried, the individuals to whom our belongings should go, and how we would like to be memorialized. By pre-arranging our funeral, we can do just that. Allowing the time to give attention to every detail. People gain assurance by making informed decisions. In addition, your family and loved ones have peace of mind knowing the arrangements are pleasing to you.

Pre-arranging is peace of mind.

How much are you really aware of the positive or negative effect that food has on your body’s health? If you knew what to put into your body that could make you stronger or increase your body’s resistance, it would be easy to choose to eat

better and improve your health. In order to make that choice, you need to educate yourself. Foods have many healing qualities. One just needs to learn what food does what for your body. The following foods are just a sampling of ones that can help with breast cancer.

• Garlic is a powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal food, and is known to be a cancer-preventing nutrient.

• Green Tea contains catechins and flavonoids, which may be protective against estro-gen-dominate breast cancers.

• Curcumin (the yellowish pigment in turmeric) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and protects against inflammatory calcium loss from bones.

• Rosemary is a powerful antioxidant that helps to remove estrogens and may inhibit breast cancer development.

• Dandelion Root, Red Clover, and Milk Thistle all protect the liver and aid in cleansing the blood.

• Lycopene is found in tomatoes, red bell peppers, and watermelon may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Eating a high fiber diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables plus grains will help with proper elimination which gets rid of toxins in the body.

Consider having plenty of “color” in your diet. Eat green vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and asparagus. These contain chlorophyll, which has been studied as a cancer fighter. Yellow and orange foods such as carrots, pumpkin, squash, and yams also help to fight cancer. Berries in a variety of colors help to protect the DNA from damage. Red, yellow, orange, and blue vegetables and fruits are good sources of antioxidants, which help to pull toxins from the body. Consider drinking green drinks as a way to lower the body’s ph level to a more alkaline state. The goal is to find foods that will help to remove toxins from the body and that will improve the immune system. In addition to choosing the foods that you eat, carefully consider getting regular exercise. Physically active people have lower cancer rates than inactive people. Exercise promotes oxygenation of the tis-sues in the body, which also helps with optimal health. Learn relax-ation and stress management techniques to help deal with stress. With proper diet, rest, stress management, and exercise you can help your body deal with any disease process.

As you can tell, there are many foods and supplements options available that may help with reducing and/or preventing breast cancer.

Chosen by the PaducahSun’s readers in the “Best of Everything” reader’s choice awards, Re-bath of the Four Rivers was recently named number one for Best Bathroom Remodeling. After visit-

ing the Paducah Re-Bath showroom and speaking with the owner, Geoff Droke, as well as many of the company’s highly trained and dedicated employees, it is apparent why so many people in this region choose Re-bath when it is time to update or modify their bathrooms. Droke, who began working for Re-Bath as a salesman in 1999, actu-ally opened his own franchise, Re-Bath of the Four Rivers, in 2007.

Re-Bath to the Rescue:For a Safe, Convenient, and

Beautiful New BathroomBy Kim Gregory Russell

Prior to that, the company operated as Re-Bath of West Kentucky under different ownership and management. Today, not only does our region prefer Re-Bath for their bathroom remodeling needs, but so do consumers internationally. Re-Bath is actually the world’s largest bathroom remodeler. Several reasons exist for this local and interna-tional success. According to Droke, “It is my hope that everyone in our region knows what Re-Bath can offer. We don’t just cover up your old, outdated, unattractive bathtubs anymore. Today’s Re-Bath offers its clients in

October 2012 — Western Kentucky — Healthy Cells Magazine — Page 13

Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and West Tennessee a chance to totally transform their bathrooms into exactly what they want and need. However, this kind of dramatic transformation occurs at a fraction of the time and cost typically involved in such a project.” Many custom-ers are also not aware that Re-Bath can tailor-make certain products to fit any sized facility. For example, if a homeowner’s tub or shower is not “standard sized”, Re-Bath can custom make any size shower, and have options for bathtubs as well. Often times what clients need is a bathroom that can provide more safety and comfort features than a traditional bathroom typically offers. For millions of older people or for those who live with a variety of dis-abilities that make bathing difficult, being able to stay independent and remain in the home they know and love is the new “American Dream”. However, the risk of injuries due to falls in the bathroom is a daunting reality for an ever-growing number of people. According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about two-thirds of injuries happen in the bathtub or shower. The slippery surfaces com-bined with the challenge of getting in and out of these spaces make the bathroom a potentially deadly area of any home. Since people cannot simply choose to give up personal hygiene, they must find ways to make this space safer for themselves and their loved ones. Walk-in bathtubs have become a more visible and available solution to the challenges of an unsafe traditional tub or shower. Geoff Droke, who has had many opportunities to see firsthand how a walk-in tub can transform the quality of life of his customers, shares, “I was sad-dened and actually kind of shocked to learn that so many people who decided to finally call Re-Bath had given up taking baths even though it was something they had really enjoyed.” He explained that one of the most fulfilling aspects of his job is seeing how adding a feature such as a walk-in tub or shower makes such a difference in people’s every day lives. “A bathroom really isn’t just a bathroom. It’s so much more than that because a nice bathroom can be a place for a person to experience relaxation and rejuvenation by doing something so simple as taking a long, warm soak,” explains Droke. “Before working for Re-Bath, I took for granted the ability to bathe and shower in safety and in comfort. It is my goal that nobody is afraid to use their tub or shower because they fear an accident,” he adds. Walk-in bathtubs are a safe way for people with limited mobility or chronic pain to experience the therapeutic benefits of hydrotherapy. They feature, among other things, convenient and safe grab bars, a handheld shower fixture, an outswing door that allows full passage in and out of the tub, a fast flow drain, and an ADA compliant seat. By installing a walk-in tub from Re-Bath, clients can bathe daily in a comfortable and safe environment, maintain more privacy and dignity by bathing independently, avoid the high cost of having to leave home and live in assisted living facilities in order to have access to safer bath-ing procedures, and relieve tension and pain with a relaxing whirlpool bathing experience. “I really encourage anyone who is considering this option to visit our showroom or give us a call and let one of our sales professionals share information and materials about these walk-in tubs. I think people would be surprised at how attractive and luxurious these tubs are,” states Droke. Additionally, Re-Bath can help customers co-ordinate funding and seek out options to pay for this kind of tub. For example, many disabled veterans have been able to have their bath-room remodeled for little to no money out of their own pockets. The same holds true for many others with a variety of needs or challenges, including income-based limits. Droke suggests that people who think they might qualify for this kind of benefit should call Re-Bath, and they will be happy to do the leg work. However, for those who are not currently in the market for a walk-in tub, Re-Bath offers other products that can convert an inconvenient,

unsafe bathing area. There are several more affordable ways to make an existing bathtub a safer place. For instance, the Safeway Step is a product that quickly and easily converts an existing tub into a functional shower that users can access much more easily. This product al-lows users the ability to enter and exit the tub in a safer way, providing users and their loved ones greater peace of mind. This professionally installed product is both affordable and quickly done, typically taking just two to four hours. For people who are not ready to tear out exist-ing facilities or who would like a more cost-effective alternative, this product are worthy of consideration. It can be installed on most tubs including those that are fiberglass, cast iron, and steel. Re-Bath can also add grab bars, benches, and handheld showers for additional convenience, comfort, and safety. Though safety and convenience in the bathroom are important to all homeowners, another priority for many is attractiveness and style. The average person will spend approximately 182 hours per year in the bathroom, and a person who lives to be 75 years old will likely spend at least a year and a half of that time in the bathroom (www.wikianswers.com). It is no wonder that it’s a priority for a bathroom to be a relaxing and attractive place. Of course, there are more tangible benefits to having an attractive, functional bathroom. While pride in one’s home is certainly important, bathrooms are also

Page 14 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — October 2012

feature story continued

a huge factor in figuring the overall value of most people’s largest investment, their homes. According to most real estate experts, one of the biggest selling features in a home is the quality of the bathrooms. Also, most appraisal sources indicate that a moderately priced, quality bathroom remodel more than pays for itself when considering the overall value of a home. An article called “13 Big Threats to Your Home’s Value” from MSNRealEstate explains that rooms that are not up to date can be a huge turnoff for potential buyers, who can be picky these days due to a competitive market. Buyers will often choose, instead of purchasing a home that needs updates, to “just move on to another home that won’t require as much work and vision.” Not surprisingly, though, most homeowners are more than a little intimidated by the idea of undertaking a huge bathroom remodel. The idea of giving up a bathroom for a lengthy remodeling process, particu-larly if it is the only full bathroom in a home, is simply unfathomable. The inconvenience, discomfort, and expense of doing without those essen-tial facilities keeps many people from making the decision to transform a space, no matter how much they hate it. Fortunately, this is where Re-Bath’s unique “refreshing remodel” can take away this burden for reluctant remodelers. A bathroom remodel done by Re-Bath, according to Geoff Droke, typically takes around two days, sometimes less. Most of the time a homeowner will be without a tub for one day or less. This convenient,

quick approach to remodeling is one factor that has made so many consumers choose Re-Bath to transform their outdated, unattractive bathrooms into beautiful, functional new spaces. Droke explains, “We know people don’t want to wait a long time to be back into their bath-rooms, which is why we specialize in doing a great job with excellent materials in a short time. Though we definitely don’t rush a homeowner when it comes to choose their features and styles, and we also don’t hurry and do sloppy work, we have highly trained installers who are certified to do a professional job in a small amount of time.” Re-Bath also offers a “one stop shop” approach to the bathroom re-modeling process. Many homeowners find the process of working with multiple contractors on multiple tasks in the bathroom highly stressful and challenging. Organizing the project, ensuring contractors get their jobs done in a timely manner, finding reliable people to do each task, and having several strangers in the house for extended periods of time can be quite daunting. Yet another advantage of choosing a Re-Bath remodel is the fact that Re-Bath can install bathing facilities, tile floors, toilets, vanities, and even faucets. Though they do not sell all of these products, they will gladly go shopping with homeowners and even help them make those design and product choice decisions. And once those items are purchased, Re-Bath’s installers will be happy to install them in the new bathroom. “One of the greatest strengths of our company is our commitment to building a personal connection with our customers. When Re-Bath remodels your bathroom, you can be assured that we treat your home as if it’s ours. We’re committed to professionalism, courtesy, and quality,” says Droke. He notes that Re-Bath’s customers consistently communicate high levels of satisfaction with their new bathrooms and with the service they receive, and he takes a great deal of pride in con-fidently stating that Re-Bath is a company that people can trust. Droke explains, “Trust is a very big deal to us. We take is very seriously, and our reputation is the very most important thing we have.” It’s that commitment to great service along with the opportunity to provide the public with products, many with a lifetime warranty, that has earned Re-Bath of the Four Rivers many prestigious awards over the years. In both 2008 and 2009, Droke’s Re-Bath of the Four Rivers was awarded a Top 10 small market franchise award from the cor-poration. He is eagerly anticipating results from 2010 and 2011 and will soon travel to Arizona to Re-Bath corporate headquarters to their convention, which takes place every 18 months. Representatives from the over 200 worldwide Re-Bath dealers will be there, and he is excited to share his local franchise’s success stories and also learn about new products from the company. Droke notes that the team at Re-Bath is committed to helping peo-ple and to making a difference in their lives. Whether a person needs a safer environment in which they can take care of personal hygiene in their own homes, or whether a person is ashamed to have visitors in their home due to the current state of their unattractive bathroom, Re-Bath is ready to meet those needs. “I believe in our brand and in the integrity of our products as well as the people who sell and install those products,” says Droke. blemish balms

Aging is a puzzle that has women of all different age groups searching to find the best remedy or regimen. We hope to help educate you on what the best options are for helping everyone

to age well. First, answer this question: “have you ever wanted your skin to look as flawless as some of the gorgeous people on the cover of a stylish magazine?” You may be surprised to know that over the past year a new item has exploded into the beauty industry that can help you with the answer. A new type of product called BB creams (also known as blemish balms) can give the same amount of coverage as your typical tinted moisturizer but is less heavy than a foundation or concealer. Many of the BB creams on the market, in addition to light coverage, also have multiple treatment benefits. They function as a primer to give you even coverage, an anti-aging serum to help fight wrinkles and lines, an anti-inflammatory to reduce any swelling, a sunscreen from UVA and UVB rays to give you full coverage against the sun’s dangerous rays, a tone-evener for redness, dark spots and blemishes, and a moisturizer—all-in-one. Best of all, over time, these multi-taskers promise to rejuvenate skin and brighten complexions.

It’s a one-step product that can be used in the place of several products. BB creams give sheer to heavy coverage, which will allow your skin to be so incredibly smooth just like it could look only with heavy foundations in the past. Another positive of BB creams is that it can minimize pores and wrinkles, and it smoothes and brightens skin. Many people with large pores and deep wrinkles have a very hard time finding some form of coverage that will allow the skin to look smooth while covering imperfections. All of these pieces to the big anti-aging puzzle can be taken care of with a BB cream. In short, this is a major breakthrough in makeup that will have you looking amazing! Makeup plus skincare equals BB creams and they are taking over the makeup world.

If you love to entertain and want to support a good cause, now you can do both at the same time. Now in its 10th year, Cook for the Cure presented by KitchenAid is a program that gives people with a

passion for cooking a way to support the fight against breast cancer. Through culinary-based fundraising, events, auctions and the sale of pink products, the partnership between KitchenAid and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has raised over $8 million for the cause. “It adds another layer of purpose to one of life’s great pleasures, cooking and enjoying food with family and friends,” said Debbie O’Connor, senior manager of brand experience for KitchenAid. You can make a difference by hosting a party that lets you Cook for the Cure by raising awareness and funds for breast cancer re-search. Here are some ideas to get you started:• Invite guests for an evening of appetizers and drinks. (Try these Mush-

room-Onion Tartlets.) Encourage fundraising by awarding a prize to the guest with the highest donation. Or, let donors enter their name into a drawing to win a restaurant gift certificate or spa treatment.

• Organize a fundraising bake sale. Get the neighbors involved in baking, promoting and selling — it’s a great way to bring everyone together.

• Host a potluck brainstorming party. Invite people who share your pas-sion for helping others to bring their favorite dish and think up creative ways you can support the cause as a group. Vote on a project and then let everyone pitch in to get started.

Yearly Mammograms Can Help

Submitted by Western Baptist

Having yearly mammograms can help in detecting breast cancer earlier and there-fore help in the effectiveness of treatment. Take the case of Kay Travis, an administrator at West Kentucky Community & Technical College.

She says her annual mammogram saved her from extensive treatment and maybe even saved her life. After a mammogram last December at the Baptist Imaging Center, she was noti-fied to return for a second mammogram and an ultrasound. "That led to a biopsy, and then eventually to a lumpectomy and radiation treatment," said Travis of Calvert

City. "I'm very thankful because I feel like the yearly mammogram is what enabled me to have successful treatment, because it was caught so early." Travis chose surgeon David West, MD, for her lumpectomy. Dr. West said that finding the cancer early made Travis' treatment easier and more effective. "The size of the tumor was small," Dr. West said. "With minimally-invasive surgery, like Kay had, she was able to return to her family, and her occupation (with) minimal time down."

Baptist Imaging Center Travis chose to have all her care—mammograms, breast ultrasound, surgery, and radiation—at Baptist Imaging Center. "From the time I started until I finished my last treat-ment, I did not meet one person who worked at this hospital who did not treat me with respect and kind-ness," she said. "It was not the experience I wanted to have in my life; however, I think I can say I found a group of people who made me realize that this is something I can beat." The hospital's breast imaging services—including mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy—are accred-ited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, a distinc-tion awarded to just the top three percent in the nation. Baptist Imaging Center Director, Betty Brown, said its spa-like setting makes mammograms comfortable and convenient, with soft robes, soothing music, fresh flowers, and more importantly, a caring and compas-sionate staff. "It's kind of like when you go to your hairdresser, you only want a certain person to cut your hair," Brown said. "Well, the same holds true when you have a mammogram. You get accustomed to the same faces, the same people, the same personalities and the relationship that you build."

CASH FOR CANDYTake a Stand Against Sweets this Halloween

Submitted by Bohle Family Dentistry

Global sugar consumption for kids increases by about two per-cent annually and currently sits at 50 million tons per year. This means that parents need to be sure their kid’s teeth are being

cared for now more than ever. Candy can also lead to hyperactivity and weight gain, as well as hurting children's teeth. In some cases, the wrong types of candy can also lead to broken teeth and damaged braces. (moved from 4th paragraph)

Halloween Candy Buy Back Program Bohle Family Dentistry is redefining the phrase "put your money where your mouth is." This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Bohle Family Dentistry in Paducah and receive $1 per pound, up to five pounds. The candy must be unopened and please—no bites. It will then be sent to Operation Gratitude, which sends the candy to U.S. Military troops deployed in harm's way.

Drs. Bohle, Mahan, Sparks, and Johnson are leading this anti-de-cay movement by giving away dollars in exchange for cavity-provoking candy. “Ditch the candy, that's what we're saying. Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost. Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, and now their piggy banks will benefit as well.” Candy will be collected at Bohle Family Dentistry on Friday, Novem-ber 2 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. They are located at 1836 Broadway Street in Paducah. Call 270-442-0256 or visit www.smilepaducah.com for more information.

caring and support

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and soon we will be seeing pink ribbons and pink signs everywhere. The fact that the world is recognizing the triumphs and tribulations

of breast cancer helps renew our hopes for continuing progress and improving chances of a cure. Those of us who deal with breast cancer on a daily basis and those courageous women battling breast cancer need no reminder to be aware of this disease. Every day all of our associates and patients continue to “fight the good fight”. In particular, there are three areas where the last year has been very pro-ductive at Lourdes Women’s Center for our patients battling breast cancer:1. The region’s only nurse navigator program is providing emotional

support and education for all of our patients with breast cancer. We recently added physical therapy to the Lourdes Women’s Center to facilitate women returning to normal activity and provide early detec-tion of long-term problems like lymphedema.

2. “Beads of Courage” has been in place for a year and is available for all of our new breast cancer patients at no charge. It provides a tangible reminder of each woman’s journey to healing with her

breast cancer. Many tears of hope, joy, and fear accompany every woman's battle with breast cancer. Caring and support during this process is very reassuring and helpful for these ladies.

3. As we become increasingly sophisticated in our initial evaluation of breast cancer, it is becoming clear that one size does NOT fit all. In-dividualizing therapy for each woman based on the particulars of her cancer is now a reality. While we are still at the early phase of this part of our journey to a cure, there is ongoing progress being made. I am par-ticipating in a study involving genetics and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemo given before the surgery). It will hopefully provide valuable infor-mation regarding which medication to use with which breast cancers.

Help support breast cancer awareness with your prayers, time and financial support. There are always needs at every level for these cou-rageous women.

affected, often resulting in unwanted wrinkles and fine lines, sunspots, and larger pores. Volunteer with Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)

SMP is a group of highly trained volunteers, who help beneficiaries prevent and detect health care fraud

through education and outreach.

Qualifications: ability and willingness to communicate health care information to seniors and the general public

Duties: participate in community outreach activities; distribute educational resources; assist with

administrative tasks; additional opportunities available depending on experience

Training: core training on the SMP program, Medicare Basics, and Fraud and Abuse provided

Commitment: Minimum 4 hours per month

Other requirements: Criminal Background check

How does it work? Your doctor will use the SmartSkin laser to apply a series of tiny pulses of laser energy to your skin. As these microscopic holes heal, new younger looking skin is revealed and collagen is stimulated deep within your skin.

What should I expect following the treatment? Immediately after the treatment, your skin will feel warm and appear to be sunburned. Your body naturally starts working by replacing the aged skin cells with new ones. You may see some redness and swell-ing, which is completely normal. Over time, collagen will regenerate and restore the supporting structure of your skin.

What is your recovery time? Each tiny hole will heal quickly. Four days is the normal recovery time. You will be able to apply make-up on the treated surface and return to your normal lifestyle.

How Can I Lose 30 Pounds Fast?By Jeff Moore, Owner of Revolution Fitness in Calvert City, AFAA Certified Personal Trainer and Sports Nutrition Counselor

People ask me all the time, “How can I lose 30 pounds fast?” Short of major surgical intervention, or losing a limb, you can’t lose significant amounts of weight fast, and still be healthy.

Most people fall into one of two categories. They start a diet or exercise program and either lose five to seven pounds immedi-ately (which is usually water weight) and then don’t lose anymore for weeks; or they don’t lose any weight at all for the first six weeks and then seem to wake up one morning and have lost several pounds and their clothes don’t fit anymore. There are exceptions of course, but most people fit one of those two scenarios. It is possible to lose weight by eating healthy and adopting a proper diet. It is also possible to lose weight by exercising and increasing cardio and aerobic activities. However, the synergistic combination of the two programs will greatly increase your chances for losing weight safely and becoming healthier. Fad diets, diet pills or drinks and ineffective exercise programs do more to discourage people and very little to actually help.

The Key is to Not Give Up… A lot of people get frustrated when they don’t see immediate results, or when their progress stalls. The cruel reality is that it just takes time and continuous effort. Diet and exercise are the only true ways to get healthy and fit. At Revolution Fitness, we always stress the importance of a proper diet and an effective workout plan. We have everything you need to help you reach your goal and become a healthier you. Five Time-SavingLaundry Tips

From messy meals to remnants of craft time creations, parents know that life is full of all kinds of stain-inducing—yet magical—adventures. However, the great times should live on through cherished memo-

ries, not through permanently stained clothing. When it comes to removing those stains—from mud to markers and everything in between—knowing how to care for your child’s garments means you can get out of the laundry room more quickly and focus on the activities your family enjoys. Aside from letting your washer and dryer do the heavy lifting, there are a few tricks of the trade worth keeping in mind when it comes to protecting clothing items, according to laundry expert Tara Aronson. “There’s more to prolonging the life of your garments than simply checking pockets and choosing the right cycle,” offers Aronson. Put these five tips from Aronson to the test to help better care for your garments, so you can spend less time sorting and treating stains, and more time with the family. 1. Spot, Treat, and Check—If you spill on a garment, immediately rinse or blot away the stain using cool water to prevent it from setting. Make sure to read fabric care labels and wash accordingly to help clothing last. Also before you toss garments into the wash, be sure to double-check the pockets, as well as zip zippers and fasten buttons—this helps cut down on snags, holes, etc.

2. Sort, Sort, Sort—Sort laundry by color, wash cycle, and water temperature required. Make it easier on yourself and your family by placing bins marked for whites, darks, mediums, and delicates in your laundry room. 3. Choose the Right Cycle—High efficiency appliances, such as the line of Affinity washers and dryers from Frigidaire, can wash clothing on various cycles. This means you can launder sturdy items such as jeans on the permanent press cycle using warm water, causing less agitation, while washing swimsuits, fine knits, and undergarments on the delicates cycle with cold water. The Affinity collection also features quick cycles, allowing you to wash and dry a load in 45 minutes, so you can run a full load while preparing dinner for the family. 4. Double-duty—If your clothing is heavily soiled, extra-large, or you want to use the cold-water setting, add extra laundry detergent when you start the cycle. Some high efficiency washers feature a sanitize setting, which uses the hottest water available to thoroughly get rid of germs and grime.5. Quick Dry—Dry only full loads—drying only a handful of garments prolongs the drying time by reducing the tumbling. If you have to dry a smaller load, add a few bath towels to help with tumbling. If you’re looking to purchase a dryer that can save you time, check out the Frigidaire Affinity Dryer featuring Ready Steam, which reduces wrinkles, can dry a full load in just 25 minutes, and uses 35 percent less energy compared to other machines. “Remember that properly caring for your garments can help sustain your favorite clothing,” says Aronson.

surgical treatment

Your eyes are one of your most precious senses and properly caring for them requires access to the best ophthalmologists, treatments, and technologies. Who can you turn to when deter-

mining your best cataract treatment options — and what treatments are covered by insurance? Thankfully, there are proven resources you can depend on for outstanding eye care in the local area. Cataract surgery, in its current form, is one of the safest surgeries performed worldwide. The procedures performed are constantly being refined with smaller incisions, better lens calculations, and more rapid healing. New technologies in eye surgery are also constantly being investigated so that thousands of patients can enjoy the benefits of restored vision through advanced microsurgical cataract procedures. Patients should ensure that only the latest, proven technologies that are safe, effective, and affordable are used. This can be done through extensive examinations and consultations with your physician. When seeking an ophthalmologist, it is also beneficial to the patient to have a team of experienced ophthalmologists who can collaborate to come up with the best possible treatment plan specific to each patient. Many patients often see an ophthalmologist to determine whether their vision loss is related to cataract or other eye disorders. Cataract surgery is often recommended when the patient has changes in vision that interfere with daily activity, such as watching television, driving, reading, sports or other activities. Symptoms of a cataract include

foggy vision, colors that seem faded, seeing glare or halo, and some-times even seeing double images. These types of vision changes, along with cataract appearance, justify coverage by insurance and Medicare for traditional/standard cataract surgery. Cecilia Toren, 69, and a patient of a local ophthalmologist, who was pleased with her results, said, “I avoided having my cataract treated for years because I did not like the idea of having surgery on my eye. Now, I am so grateful for the procedure. My doctor helps his patients make educated decisions, “she said. Another patient, Carmen Thompson, 62, had surgery performed that required cataract removal, and she chose to have multi-focal lenses implanted. This is a traditional surgery, with an implant that provides excellent vision both at a distance and near. “My results are phenomenal and I am so happy with the proce-dure,” said Carmen. “It’s great to be able to reach for a book without having to reach for my glasses as well – I never thought I’d be saying that at my age.”
