CHARMS OF A RUSTIC ANCIENT CITY– BAGAN

Bagan? Pagan? To many people, this city may notsound as glamorous as big places like New Yorkor Beijing. However, this ancient sleepy city inMyanmar, which rest alongside the AyeyarwaddyRiver, is one of the richest archaeological sites inAsia. Bagan is also well known for its tranquillityand majesty.

Upon touchdown at the Bagan airport via AirYangon domestic flight, the team of photographersfrom The Photographic Society of Singapore in

this specially organized photography tour weregreeted by the friendly Myanmese who did theirdaily chores in a slow idyllic pace. This is in starkcontrast to what we saw in Yangon.

Cows on the side of the mud path, horse cartsferrying commodities as well as tourists, publictransport that is overloaded with passengers, thenumerous ancient temple ruins and magnificentarchitecture, the rural taste of life, the handicraftshops, the faithful monks, the local procession,

Rice is a staple diet for the locals. You wull not see much noodles here.

The locals made very good pots out of clay.

Our Bagan trip was wrapped up with a boat ridealong the Ayeyarwaddy River in the late afternoon. For a while, the thick clouds dampened our mood.We hoped for good weather, and our prayers worked. The setting sun suddenly shone its golden light ontothe coast, while the locals go about their evening bathand washing of clothes in the river.

As we were on our way to the Bagan airport on thelast day, probably in all our hearts, we were tellingourselves: “We will be back!”

the local cultural entertainment, were what madeus busy photographing throughout the 3 daysthere.

For some of us, it was the first time we walkedbarefooted in the temple premises. The path was filledwith small stones. The climb up the stupa was anotheradventurous feat. The steep and high steps made ita vertical challenge for us who lugged heavy camerabags and tripods. Certainly, the descent down thesteps was sure a bold attempt. We had to “sit” ourway down the steps.

From the top of the newly built Sunset tower, wewitnessed a breathtaking panaromic view of thetemple ruins in the midst of the setting sun. Catch thefresh and strong gust of cool wind, as the setting sunsets the clouds into tints of red. For a moment, wewished for the time to stop.

Bullock carts can be seen in many places.

Represented by Max Photo Pte Ltd, this was the

2nd show we participated in year 2005 after the

IT Show which was held six months ago. Comex

2005 drew slightly more crowd of 589,000 visitors

compared to IT Show of 560,000.

Coolpix S1 was our top selling model in our

compact digital camera range. We attributed the

success to the attractive price tag and special

lamination wrap which gave S1 a new refreshing

look.
