From the Desk of the PresidentPaul Egan

Hi! Since PADA has grown rapidly in the lastseveral years, I want to talk about PADA ingeneral to try to give everyone an overviewof what PADA does and is involved with. Ifyou are interested in finding out more on anyof these things or want to volunteer, emailme at [email protected].

Now, on to the many things that PADA isinvolved with:

Obviously, PADA main purpose is to runleagues for everyone to enjoy. This in-cludes Spring, Summer, Fall and the newWinter indoor league. This year Springleague had about 350 people, SummerLeague had about 800 people and FallLeague had about 450 people.

PADA has also recently started aWomen’s league for both the summer andfall and this has proven a great way forwomen in PADA to gain experience andhone skills.

In addition to running the leagues, PADAsupports Juniors activities, including sev-eral tournaments during the year. AlsoPADA runs several Hat tournaments in-cluding Turkey Bowl, Toilet Bowl (NewYear’s day), Mother’s Day and the 4th ofJuly. PADA is also involved in Wildwood,Mikey’s Spring Thing and MOSH.

In addition to organized events, PADAsupports pick-up in the Philadelphia areaby obtaining some permits for fields andposting all the pick-up locations that weknow of on the web. [email protected] for more info.

PADA is involved in field care and main-tenance of our clubhouse. Next time yougo into the clubhouse, check out all thenew ceiling fans and the new light fix-tures. PADA and the PCUA (Philadel-

phia Cricket and Ultimate Association)just spent about $2200 to upgrade theelectrical work in the house. Also, thefields will be seeded, limed and aeratedas soon as we get some rain. I hopethat will take care of the dusty part offield #5!PADA also has at least 2 workdays ev-ery year to help keep the fields and club-house in good shape for our continueduse. Keep your eyes out for the nextworkday and mark it on your calendar.

What is amazing about all of this is thatPADA is an all-volunteer organization. Thanks to everyone who have helped makePADA run.

Hope that gives you an idea of what PADAis involved in!

See you at the Holiday Party!

Elections!

PADA it is time to elect your next board! ThePADA board does tons of things that keepour organization running smoothly. Theboard is involved in selecting and helpingout the league coordinators, planning forvarious tournaments, taking care of field andclubhouse issues and much more.

Please read through the candidates’statements, and VOTE!Ballots must be postmarked by Dec 10, 2001.

Cindy BiddleI want to be on the board again next yearbecause I feel it’s my way of giving backto the PADA community. Making the de-cisions that affect the future of PADA,seeing the direction we are heading withthe size of our leagues, seeing the growthof the organization it’s something that Iwant to be a part of.

Jim BroseMy name’s Jim Brose, and I’m currentlyvice-president of the PADA Board.

I’ve been on the Board for two years. Ilove the sport, the spirit, and thecommaraderie at the Edge and am dedi-cated to making PADA even more wel-coming to new players. My goals for thefuture include developing a better culturefor volunteers, expanding our relationshipwith field providers, and putting more loveback on the fields. We have a great tra-dition of ultimate in Philadelphia and I lookforward to keeping it that way.

Taun ChapmanI first played Ultimate in Ithaca, NY 1974.I was hooked instantly but unfortunatelythere weren’t very many more opportuni-ties to play Ultimate as a teenager. Itwasn’t until the 1990s in Vancouver BC,

Canada that I was able to have fun play-ing Ultimate 3 times or more per week. IfUltimate were a religion, which for someit is, I would place myself on the evan-gelical side of the spectrum. I would liketo help expand the sport in the region sothat people of all ages and levels whowant to enjoy the play and Spirit of Ulti-mate have the opportunity to do so. Oneway of doing this is to represent otherplayers who feel the same way aboutUltimate, on the PADA Board. Thankyou.

Kara CoatsA long time competitive ultimate playerI’m a relative newcomer to PADA havingonly participated in Summer League2000 and 2001. PADA ranks as the bestfringe benefit for returning to the Phila-delphia area. My interest in serving onthe PADA board stems from a desire toincrease my involvement with a strongorganization. As an attorney I possessmany skills useful to board membershipand am a capable organizer and a fledg-ling fundraiser. As a board member mygoal would be to make Philadelphia ulti-mate enjoyable, organized, competitiveand safe for all participants regardlessof gender or skill level.

Louis CoudercMy name is Louis Couderc and I am run-ning for a PADA board member position. I have been a PADA member for the last 13years. In that time I have CO-coordinatedfall league for the last 8 years and haveseen fl league grow from eight teams totwenty-eight. PADA as a whole is experiencing unparal-leled growth as well and is being confrontedwith challenges that affect everyone in thePADA community. My expertise in leaguemanagement and a “spirit above all” phi-losophy towards ultimate make meuniquely qualified to help meet PADA’schallenges in the future.

Paul DarlingPADA has a rich tradition of well-run andexciting Ultimate events. By serving on thePADA board, I hope to raise the level ofquality of each of these events to surpasscurrent expectations. In addition, I wouldlike to participate in the birth of new tradi-tions that will allow PADA to creatively growits membership as expand its range of avail-able activities.

My brief involvement in PADA includes co-ordination of Spring League 2001 and vol-unteering on informal projects. Based onthese successful efforts, I am enthusiasticabout my candidacy for PADA board andanxious to add value wherever I am able.

Paul EganHello PADA! As you may know, I was presi-dent of PADA in 2001 and I am running forreelection to the PADA board again. I’vebeen heavily involved in PADA for many yearand I’ve run Fall League, Summer Leagueand served on the board as VP and nowpresident.

I am very interested in staying on the PADAboard and continuing to work on the overallorganizational structure of PADA so thatwe have a firm (documented) foundation forthe future.

Please Vote!It is important!

Jon FrancisIn the past three years in PADA, I’ve rap-idly grown more involved and invested inthis organization. As I have gone beyondmerely playing ultimate, I have foundmore and more things that I have wantedto do to improve the organization. Forexample, throughout this year I investi-gated and organized an indoor winterleague for this coming winter, because Ithink playing indoors is an extremely funalternative to playing on ice and snow. Ihave also been developing plans to workwith the city to improve the turf on thefields we use for fall league and pickup. Two other goals are currently on myagenda as well. First, I would like to seePADA develop a larger and more estab-lished women’s league, at least for oneseason in the year; this would really helpgive women a more rewarding playingexperience. And second, I would likePADA to place greater responsibility andaccountability on captains; captainsneed to set an example for sportsman-ship, captains need to take responsibil-ity for teaching and involving new play-ers, and PADA needs to actively work tomake sure captains are doing this...it maybe nothing more than talking to captainsbriefly before each season; the point isn’tto be beaurocratic — the point is to careenough to take action. These projectsinvolve the board - they need the board’ssupport - and the best way I can coordi-nate with the board is to be a part of it.

Paul MinecciI started playing Ultimate in Philadelphiain the Summer of 1989, and it has beengreat fun to watch PADA grow tremen-dously during that time, “breeding ulti-mate” as our shirts say. The issues fac-ing our organization today both on andoff the field are often quite complex andchanging, and require us to develop newstrategies to address them. For ex-ample, the models we used when therewere 20 teams in the league have beenseverely stretched to handle the 48 teamswe have now. Issues regarding fieldspace, league administration, and fi-nances are challenges we must addressso that PADA can continue to grow. Ibelieve that I can help to further PADA’sgoals, and I would appreciate the oppor-tunity to continue to serve you.

Ed MontalvoI’ve been involved in PADA for some timenow. Most of that time has been in Sum-mer League, Fall League, Wildwood andlots of parties. I have really enjoyed thistime and now I want to help continue thisgreat tradition by joining the PADA Board. This way I feel that I can give a little backand help forge the future of PADA.

Lisa MontalvoHi everyone. Who do you want on thePADA Board anyway? What does thePADA Board do to make Philly ultimatea great experience year after year?

I had no idea! All I knew was that theboard has been doing a great job of help-ing to make me happy since 1989.

I have been playing Ultimate withinPADA since 1989 and captained since1992. This year I had the chance to runSummer League 2001. Never, did I thinkI was going to work so hard. In reality, the board made it easy be taking manyof the responsibilities. The one thing I diddifferent from any over Summer LeagueCoordinator, was to create an easy tonavigate and informative website for sum-mer league only and introducedwww.scorereporter.com, which was agreat success.

As a PADA Board member, I will do mybest to improve our Web presense andto use the internet to facilitate on-line reg-istration, game scheduling and recordkeeping. A large percentage of PADAmembers are on-line and frequently usethe internet to get information and com-municate with team members and otherPADA members. Let’s use it. I am alsoconcerned with keeping the spirit of PhillyUltimate alive and healthy.

Corinne O’ConnellCorinne has had a hand in organizing sev-eral PADA events since she’s been amember, and became more involved withthe organization when she became aboard member for the past year, holdingone of the four office positions. In addi-tion to working with several smaller eventsthroughout the past year, she worked onorganizing PADA MOSH this year.

Summer League 2001Lisa Montalvo

That went fast again.Summer League wasthe usual blast. Thisyear for the first time, Igot deeply involvedsupporting PhillyUltimate. As SummerLeague Coordinators,Chris and I initiatedour first planning forSL2001 in anextended eveningsession in Chicago atour mutual friendshome, Rita and DougKirk.Chris was there on business and we werevisiting family, then Rita and Doug. Inaddition, a few late night sessions withthe invaluable efforts of a few other dedi-cated and crazy people, including; Tho-mas Taylor, Joe Ford, Paul, Egan, PaulBonfati, Maureen O’Connell, Mo Gavin,Jim Brose, and Joe Sowers, helped toget the season started.

During the season, I received the gamescores from the Captains, and postedthem on www.scoreporter.com for all tosee. Judging from the positive feedback(thanks again), everyone liked knowinghow their competition was doing. I did.To judge from the number of hitsScoreReporter got, people were hunchedover their keyboards checking out thecompetition during playoff time. Afterseeing the results day after day, I didn’tsee any easy pools this year. The newdraft format worked well to spread theUltimate talent throughout the league.

It was no surprise that Trey and Beth’steam won Finals. They routinely beattheir competition in regular season andduring playoffs. What was really fine tomy eyes was to see the relativecaptaining new-comers, MelissaCahnmann & Jon Francis, lead a youngteam to near victory but only losing toTrey and Beth’s team in the Finals. Bythe way, Jon and Melissa’s already out-standing victory was impressive in thatthey lacked their top draft picks Hectorand Lisa Meeden’s contribution until theend of the season (they were away untilplay-off’s). Outstanding!

SPIRIT: In addition to reporting the gamescore, this year we asked teams to givetheir opponents a spirit score. RightfullyGamal Sherif & Kirsten Keefe’s Teamwon the spirit award. But, there whereat least two other teams that were rightup there. Ken Yenoviak and Meg Wise’s, as well as, Uhle and Amy James’ wereboth sitting right behind Gamal and

Kirsten in high spirit ratings. Judgingfrom bountiful spirit five’s given through-out the league (five was the highest score, two was the lowest given to a team), Ican say that most of us had a great sum-mer at the Edge. Of course, there werea couple of unspirited incidences (shameto you). I believe that this year’s spiritwas as good as that seen in previousyears.

PADA’a summer league has a specialplace in the world Ultimate community.Spirit is alive and thriving here in Philly. Iam glad to have been part of it. Thanksfor the good times.

Spirit Spotted at SL FinalsDave “Womz” Whomsley

Every year we rely on the PADA Board to putpolicies in place to improve the league. Atthe start of each season, the draft is designedto ensure that teams start with an equaldistribution of talent. At the end of eachseason, the playoff format is crafted to giveeach team an equal shot at the title. And, ifall goes well, to end the season with anail-biter championship game that gets thecrowd on its feet cheering awesome Ultimate. This year’s championship game certainlydelivered the goods.

Those lucky enough to attend saw thelight shirt team, led by Trey Katzenbachand Beth Pfeiffer, steadily build a lead andthe dark shirt team, led by Jon Francisand Misha Cahnmann, slowly whittle itaway. With equally great offensive anddefensive plays, the lead swung back andforth all the way up to a 15-15 tie. And,finally, the light team captured the title at17-15!

But goals like distribution of talent andgreat playoffs always take the backburnerto the overriding PADA goal – Spirit ofthe Game. We’ve recently seen someexamples of “the Spirit thing” not work-ing out and I’m not so sure what policies,if any, we can put in place to set it right.Funny thing is, bad examples are easyto spot – just look for players arguing onthe field or some guy berating his team-mates from the sidelines.

But great Spirit, like a ghost, can passyou by in the wink of an eye. Mixed inwith all those great things we did see, Ibet 99% of everyone watching the cham-pionship game missed one of the bestSpirit calls of the season. I was fortunateenough to notice it only when I replayedmy videotape in slow motion.During the heat of battle, a long hucksoared into the end zone. Receiver anddefender went up and with a slap the disc

came down. “Foul!” rang out. Then, be-tween blinks, the Spirit of the Gamecame and went and “Turnover” was called.

That Spirit the camera caught between“Foul!” and “Turnover” was a defendernamed Trey urging the receiver to rethinkhis call. “Come on, Eggs, my hand hityour arm AFTER you missed the catch.”I can only imagine what Eggs was think-ing… “It’s the Championship Game. It’sanybody’s victory to take and this is areally important point. My team’s rely-ing on me to call a foul a foul and notback down. Why do they call me Eggs?”But Trey hadn’t screamed. He hadn’tprefaced his argument with “You frikkin’,cheatin’ A-hole, “. He simply asked theguy to think about what had just hap-pened.

Silently, Eggs looked at the groundwatching the instant replay in his head -the same replay I saw on videotape. Hewent up, the disc glanced off his finger-tips THEN Trey slapped his arm. Whilehe missed the catch, the camera caughtpure Spirit of the Game. Eggs turned toTrey and said, “You’re right, I missed it.Turnover.”

So hats off to the Board for the hoursdedicated to giving us a great champion-ship game and to Trey and Eggs for re-minding us in a fleeting moment what theleague and the game are really all about.

Captains Shout Outs!A gigantic thank you is definitely in orderfor all PADA Captains. Summer league2001 was led fearlessly under the direc-tion of 96 captains. From Draft Night toA pool finals, Summer League Captainsmade it happen. The PADA Communityappreciates the time, talent, energy, andspirit each captain brought to the league.Game schedules, t-shirts, post game fes-tivities, reschedules, score reporting, fieldset ups, beer duty, emails, emails, andmore emails…are just some of the finercaptaining duties.

As the PADA summer league continuesto grow, we have to rely more and moreon energetic, spirited captains. Thankyou to those captains who have been vol-unteering for many years like Edie & Joe,Brendan & Nancy, Keith & Stacey, Boots& Julie, Chris & Lou…the list could goon and on. Thanks also, to those newfolks who stepped forward to help prov-ing that you don’t have to be a PADA“legend” to be a captain. To each of youwho made the commitment, PADAthanks you. We look forward to your re-turn next summer.

Captaining is often a thankless job but acritical element for the League. It’s afantastic way to give back to PADA. So,the next time you see or hear about cap-tains needed, throw your name into themix. PADA needs you.

Page 8: Ode to Pada, A League For All Seasons · 2016. 4. 27. · Your whitest teeth. Not in three months. Not in three weeks. In just about an hour . Introducing the BriteSmile Professional

Then there’s the matter of how you sayit. Gently is usually best.

“I use a lot of I’s - I have noticed that youlean back on your throws,” Beth said.“This is less threatening in general andpeople tend to not get defensive then ifthey did not initially ask for the feedback.”

Brendan said he emphasizes the posi-tive and makes his expectations clear.“Do tell them to practice a flick beforethe game because it is not as strong astheir backhand,” Brendan said, “and thatyou expect them to throw a few flicks inthe game ‘whether you can completethem or not.’ Don’t tell them that theirflick sucks and that they should just fo-cus on the backhand.”

Take a lesson from Frank Sinatra andaccentuate the positive.

“The main thing here is to pay attention, notice improvements when they happen, and let the player know you noticed,”Kareem said. “Encouragement can go along way to letting a frustrated player re-lax and learn without feeling pressured. Also, sometimes you have to just backoff and let the person figure it out.”

Focusing on what a player can do canhelp you find ways to incorporate thatperson in the game. For example,Brendan had a player on his summerleague team who had trouble catchinghigher throws, but she caught almost any-thing below her shoulders. Brendan sim-ply adjusted his throws for her, giving herconfidence in catching. Sometimes, it’s

Captaining EffectivelyMiriam Hill

You fake a cut down field and turn around, envisioning yourself completely open, onlyto find that your teammate is hovering aroundthe disc. Your cut quietly dies.

You throw the disc to a teammate whopromptly heaves it long, even though hedoesn’t have that throw. Turnover.Just about everyone who has ever playedUltimate has been in situations likethese. They’re frustrating. Some peopleyell. Others complain to everybody onthe team but the person who made themistake. Both of these techniques workabout as well as when parents yell attheir kids to clean their rooms.

Many players, however, manage to giveadvice and leave their teammates smil-ing. In the belief that every player cantame her inner Tanya Harding, PADAsought advice from three people as wellknown for their athleticism as for theirtact. Many people in PADA fill that bill, but we settled on Jon Moore, also knownas Kareem, who plays with Rage; BethPfeiffer, a Philly Pepper and co-captainof this year’s winning summer leagueteam; and Brendan Smith, who, well,he’s Brendan.

Their responses to questions on this topicwere so similar that it almost looked likethey were written by the same person, one sign that there probably is a rightway.

Their biggest point: Try to avoid offeringtips on the field. Adrenaline is pumping, which makes it easier for people to getupset. Also, it’s impossible to have a con-versation during a game, so ifsomeone doesn’t understand your point, you won’t have time to explain.

“For these kinds of talks: on the sidelineis better than on the field, and at a barover beers is probably better than on thesideline,” Kareem said.

wise to let the whole team know, gently, ofcourse, about what works best for certainplayers. Brendan said he also goes out ofhis way to throw to newer players to helpthem feel like part of the team and to givethem confidence.

“Whenever possible you should get theseteammates the disc in the endzone,” hesaid. “Sometimes it is not even necessarythat they catch the disc, as long as theyunderstand that they are a target and the

Page 9: Ode to Pada, A League For All Seasons · 2016. 4. 27. · Your whitest teeth. Not in three months. Not in three weeks. In just about an hour . Introducing the BriteSmile Professional

disc will be thrown to them. I think it isimportant that the veteran players on theteam understand that they may have toblow off open cuts in an effort to get cer-tain people the disc. It always feels goodto score a goal. If the pass is dropped ormisread, then your opponent still has towork it the length of the field, which isn’tall that easy for most teams.”Beth and Brendan said they have bothoffered to help players work on certainskills before games. One of Brendan’s

“Eat. Sleep. Breed Ultimate.” The Phila-delphia Area Disc Alliance has remainedtrue to its motto experiencing a tremen-dous growth within the last few years. For example, Fall League grew from 21teams in 2000 to 28 teams in 2002. An-other exciting addition is on the horizonas plans are brewing for a new women’sclub team.

Philadelphia currently has 1 women’sclub team, the Philly Peppers—Go Pep-pers! But while the number of women inPADA continues to grow, the number ofwomen’s club teams has not. PADA hasorganized many opportunities for womento have more playing time throughwomen’s summer and fall pick-up league.

While running drills, playing fabulous pick-up through rain and shine, and doing gru-eling monster sprints, women involved inwomen’s fall league decided that wewanted more. We tossed around the ideafor the new women’s club team and dis-cussed what the goals of the team should

teammates wanted to work on pulling,so Brendan agreed to meet him beforesummer league to work on it. WhenBrendan’s teammate failed to show upearly, however, Brendan didn’t let him pullin games.Often, the biggest challenge is keepingyourself calm. Kareem said he followsseveral rules to keep a lid on negativefeelings.“Always go up to the person you want totalk to - you’ll be less likely to yell if

they’re right next to you; it will be less pub-lic than screaming across the field at some-one, so he or she will feel less defensiveand may be more receptive,” he said. “Andgetting over to them in the first place willgive you a couple of seconds to cool down.”

Or take Brendan’s advice: “When indoubt...shut up.”

Dogs and DiscsJim Brose

Dogs and frisbees go together like DerrickColeman and doughnuts. While I don’t owna dog, I’m sure it is quite nice to be able tobring one out to the park to get a little funand exercise while you play some disc. You can probably save on food costs toosince there’s usually someone who leavesan unprotected hunk of protein on the side-lines. And of course there’s the high flirtfactor. Yes, dogs and frisbee go togetherlike Howard Eskin and idiotic comments.

Unfortunately, last summer dogs and bitesand went together too. One dog bit a child. The same dog bit at least one other dog. Isaw several dogfights on the sidelines.Perhaps it is because of my new status asa father that these incidents seemed moreprevalent than in the past, or perhaps therewere just more dogs and incidents. I haveseen what a dog-bite can do a small child’sface.

The purpose of this note is to help preventsuch a tragedy. The PADA Board is notready to ban dogs from the fields. Wewelcome dogs and we welcome playerswith dogs. However, we are looking for thedogs to be handled more responsibly. Ifyou know that your dog has bitten some-one or some thing (including the mailman),or if you believe it has a propensity for bit-ing, please leave your dog at home. If yourdog comes to the field and acts badly, please respect us if we ask you to leash itor take it away. If you have a complaintabout a dog, please talk to a Board mem-ber (there’s usually one picking up trasharound the clubhouse).

This would involve attendingpractices and clinics aimed at betteringour skills, which is important for the nextgoal of being a competitive team. Theteam plans to hold scrimmages againstother women college and club teams inaddition to entering tournaments. Mostimportant is the goal of having fun andspreading the spirit of ultimate.

Captain Profiles:Gil Wernovsky, AKA Dr. Gil Nancy ReigelWhen did you Start playing ultimate?Informally began 1973 in Cheltenham,PA. First ‘official’ ultimate game was withBrandeis Whippets (with PADA memberTim Feeman), where we lost to Tufts 46-16 in the days of timed games. Playedwith Brandeis 1975-1978, Hershey Medi-cal Nukes and Philly Frisbee Club 1978-81; U Penn refubees 1982; Seven Sagesof the Bamboo Grove 1983-

How or better yet, why did you getinvolved with Ultimate? It was the 70’s, and I wanted to rebel. Iwas tired of my lacrosse coach havingtestosterone storm and screaming that‘we weren’t REAL men’ while we didpushups with full pads. Also, I was get-ting the crap beat out of me as a 5’9”crease attackman. Ultimate was muchmore appealing, and the people weremuch more NORMAL.

Favorite Ultimate Tournament:Worlds 1995, Street, England. Traveledtrans-atlantic and played with my son(then aged 11), and the Seven Sages wonour 3rd consecutive Master’s title.

When did you Start playing ultimate?Throwing in the street in the 70’s… club inspring of 1988

How or better yet, why did you get in-volved with Ultimate? My older brother started playing ultimateat Columbia University & when he camehome for break, he made me throw withhim. I remember hitting parked cars, get-ting yelled at & running in the house frus-trated!! But something stuckJ

Favorite Ultimate Tournament:1995 World’s in England

How long playing with PADA?Since summer of 1988 with a few breaksfor children & this year played in the newWest Chester suburban summer league.

Best thing about PADA?People like Dave Keiser (my frisbee hus-band - ahh), Big Rick (frisbee husband inmy dreams), Bob Nape (Ooo la la!), MarkRosser (haven’t seen him out-heckled yet!),Alicia Shultz (gotta love her!), Sue Mac(mischievous smile), Ana Santoyo (Keepthat shirt on!), Clapper (trying to be humble),Deb Dickens (rumored to be at sectionals),Shuttle, Uhle, Stevie and all the rest of youfun-loving ultimate creaturesJ

What would you change about PADA?Captains need to feel responsible for teach-ing the newer folks the importance of spiritof the game.

Signature throw:Actually it’s my diving catch!!J

Favorite Ultimate Experience:Winning women’s masters at Nationals inLexington, KY in or around 1996

Post Game Beverage of Choice:Body shots

How long have you been playing withPADA?Since I moved back to Philly in 1995

Best thing about PADA?The EDGE! The ability to have a centralgathering place for Ultimate in this city istruly unique. The people are terrific, andwhat make this game great.

What would you change about PADA?I would suggest that we try new ideas forthe league system, such as a full teamentry for one of the leagues. Also, thetrue “spirit of the game” is very variable inthe current day.

Signature throw:Blind backhand (into the dirt, or out ofbounds)

Favorite Ultimate Experience:See Worlds, 1995

Post Game Beverage of Choice:1. Cold frosty brew2. Warm sudsy gun3. Anything made by Uhle.

The Roots Stay StrongMark Rosser

Thirty three years ago, ultimate Frisbeewas invented at Columbia High School inMaplewood, New Jersey. Do they stillplay there? They sure do. On October 27, ColumbiaHigh School repeated as the winner ofDivision I in the Kat in the Hat High SchoolTournament. This was only one of themany highlights throughout the day.

The 6th Annual Kat in the Hat took placeon a windy day at Edgely. Juniors ulti-mate has grown in Philadelphia andthroughout the country. There were 18teams in attendance and five more on thewaiting list for the largest fall high schooltournament in the country. Seven teamsrepresented the Philadelphia area. Wewere also very happy that Stuyvessant,a school which is located only a fewblocks from where the World Trade Cen-ter stood, was able to come participate.Winning the award for the longest travel(just barely defeating Nacho), was JRTucker School from Richmond, Virginia. There were two pools of three in DivisionI and four pools of three in Division II.Three rounds of pool play were followedby two playoff rounds. The results arebelow.

A surprise in this year’s tournament wasthe play of Ozymandias, the team fromPenn Charter in their first year of com-petitive play. Their athletic abilities andtheir teamwork helped them to capturethe Division II Championship. In DivisionII, three of the four pools were won byPhiladelphia teams. Wissahickon andPennsbury showed that they would alsobe leading contenders when the third an-nual city championship is played in Mayof 2002. There was good spirit through-out the day. In Division II the Dead Par-rot Society of Lower Merion was awardedthe “Spirit of the Game” trophy.

Division I was made up of some peren-nial powerhouses as well as some freshnew faces. Columbia High School hassuch a strong program that they actuallybrought a varsity team and their JV team(the JV team competed in Div II).Scarsdale High continues to excel, justas they did when players like Fortunat

Mueller or Lindsay Goldsmith were there.Stuyvessant is one of those New Yorkteams that is always strong. AlthoughPrinceton High School did not bring theirwhole squad, they will be talented thisyear. One of their players told me theirgoal this year was to win junior nation-als. It was also exciting seeingWatchung Hills and JR Tucker competein Division I. Watchung Hills played welltogether, and JR Tucker was awarded the“Spirit of the Game “ trophy for Division I.The games were exciting and well spir-ited. In the end Columbia proved theywere the cream of the crop. They wentthrough the day 4-0, and their closestgame was their 11-6 victory overStuyvessant in the championship game.

Those of you who were there saw somegreat ultimate. If you weren’t there, checkout the photos that are available. Pho-tos from this tournament (and other PADAtournaments) are posted on the EarthPilotweb site at www.earthpilot.com Also, other information about juniors events isposted on the juniors link onwww.pada.org

The Few, The Proud, The Creative:The Knights of the Garden CommitteeBy Gamal Sherif

Once upon a time, like around 1993, therewere some beautiful ultimate fields nextto the Castle Edgely in the Kingdom ofFairmount Park. Players would gatherfrom all over the Delaware Valley (almost300 every summer!) to huck, sky and bidon the beautiful fields. The players werehappy, however a little naïve. Little didthey realize that there was an evil dragonnamed “Nee-Glect” who would terrorizetheir fields and allow trash and grass topile way up high, all the way to theirchests. The players had to depart theirwagons amid this trash and high-growngrass—it was surely a bummer.

Luckily, some male and female Knightsof PADA got together and decided to dosomething about Nee-Glect. Theystarted cutting down the weeds, pickingup the trash, and planting flowers in an-cient gardens, some of which dated backto the years 1938-1942, when CastleEdgely was first built. The Knights of theGarden Committee were born, and theplayers were happy that Nee-Glect hadbeen scared away. Unfortunately, afterNee-Glect left, other demons rushed into take his place.

One demon was called “Invasive.” Inva-sive ate up all of the indigenous plantsand totally messed around with the eco-system. The Knights realized that theyhad to avoid introducing all sorts of veg-etation that would feed Invasive. Theneeded a long-term flower plan. Theygathered the best gardeners in the Dela-ware Valley and went to work. After an-other year, the flowers were in bloom andthe players were happy once again.

Another demon was named “Rat,” be-cause she was a bureaucrat. Rat wasthe kind of demon that would swoop downon the Knights and start screaming“weed, weed, weed!” or “water, water, water!” The Knights realized that in or-der to keep their ancient gardens look-ing swell, they would have to weed andwater - - - basic things that go along withgarden stewardship. The Knights real-ized that Rat was really a friend and, in1998, they set up a rotating weeding andwatering schedule for all the players tosee. The players, and Rat, were veryhappy.

What started out as one simple gardenhad now grown into six. The Knightsasked PADA for a $100 budget, and thePADA lords agreed. “Gardening is good!”exclaimed Lady Major, and “Bring on thehoses!” chimed Lord Egan. The Knightsof the Garden Committee would be wellfunded in the future.

But the Knights had grown old after sevenyears of dragon-chasing and demon-deal-ing. Glorious Knights such as LauraGeorge, Kenny Levin, Stacey Bilinski,Ed Addams, Lynn McGinley and othershad moved on to tend their boats, ridetheir rollerblades, and heal the sick. Anew batch of Knights would have to jointhe Garden Committee in order to keepthe dragons and demons at bay. Butwhere would these Knights come from? Why, the PADA players of course!

If you’d like to get involved with the Gar-den Committee, contact the PADA Boardfor Spring Training. Times are tough - - -and PADA could use a few good, proudand creative men and women for theKnights of the Gardening Committee.

The Road to Nationals...Final Destination: Sarasota, FLMike Adlis

Philadelphia’s Masters Team OLD SAG,played its 2nd season together under thecaptaincy of Jim Brose, Jim Viner, & SteveWherry. The road to Nationals featuredseveral stops. The first stop was Lehigh University inlate September. The chance to playagainst open club teams & young col-lege teams was a good test for OLD SAGwho finished 7th in the PA/NJ/DE sec-tion. The next stop would be MastersRegionals in rebel country, Raleigh, NCin mid October.

SAG arrives in Raleigh & breaks out itsnew “O” the Homey Double Stack. Afera 1st round scare with Hoss, SAG per-fects their O & peaks when it defeatsthe Regions #1 seed Cranky on its wayto a 6-0 record in earning the #1 seedfrom the Mid-Atlantic region. Final Des-tination: The Polo Fields, Sarasota, FL(Nov. 1st-4th).

Thursday, Nov. 1st: OLD SAG leavestheir beach apartments on Lido Key at7:00am sporting 3 red ragtop convertiblesas they parade into the first day of poolplay at Nationals. The polo fields featuresome of the sweetest, softest, andplushiest fields from one end to the otherand “GETTING H” is a must! Having beenwarned the previous year that it’s alwayswindy at the Polo Fields this year wasno different. The fact that HurricaneMichelle was heading toward Fl madelast year’s condition seem calm com-pared to this year. It was really F...n’Windy at the Polo Fields! The wind wassuch a factor that several Masters gamesfinished with one goal being scored up-wind. The outcome of the game couldbe determined by winning the flip of thedisc and taking the downwind side to startthe game. For OLD SAG its offensiveweapon the Homey Double Stack thatwas working to perfection at regionalswould be rendered ineffective & had tobe put on the shelve. The strategy

changed to: do not turn the disc in yourown end of the field when going down-wind. The O would now consist of the “GoPlay” downwind followed by a tight zonecup if the disc was turned over. Teamsthat could score upwind would gain a hugeMojo advantage as if it were a 2 point play.

SAG draws Old & Crabby (San Francisco)in their first game. SAG wins the flip &chooses to pull not realizing the troublegoing upwind would be. Crabby receivesgoing downwind and scores first. SAG an-swers going downwind while the teamstrade several points going downwind. Asthe half continues Crabbyis able to use it’s height advantage overSAG when going upwind to grab theirswilly throws when a crowd camps underthe hanging disc. Crabby finally managesto score an upwind goal. SAG must an-swer with an upwinder to stay one behindbut SAG turns the disc & Crabby scoresthe downwinder to open a lead that OLDSAG cannot overcome. Crabby takes thehalf and wins the game (15-8) mostly ontheir ability to score 4 upwind goals. SAGis unable to score an upwind goal becauseit’s windy at the polo fields! SAG (0-1)

In the second round SAG plays Lung Ma-chine (0-1) (Kentucky / Cincinnati combo). This time SAG wins the flip and takesthe wind. On the first point SAG forcesthe turn and scores the downwinder andtake a 1-0 lead. SAG plays better and isable to score upwind goals and goes onto win 15-7. SAG (1-1)

The 3rd game is the last one for the firstday of pool play. SAG goes up againstAlzhammers (1-1) (Alabama). Sag losesthe flip. Bama pulls downwind to SAG andgets SAG to turn the disc and Bama

scores first: 1-0. SAG answers with adownwinder & then the teams trade pointsgoing downwind until the end of the firsthalf. Bama makes a huge play when oneof their players breaks SAG’s zone D andis able to send a huck into the wind. ABama player runs it down and has to lay-out to make the catch in front of SAG’sgoal line. Bamascores the first upwinder in the game totake a 2 goal lead and big Mojo advantageas Bama takes the half. In the second halfSAG continues to trade points with Bamawhen the wind suddenly lets up. SAG isable to take advantage and scores upwindand ties the game at 10 - 10. Bama is pres-sured into scoring upwind and turns thedisc and SAG scores to go up 11-10 withthe cap on & game to 13. Bama scoresthe next downwinder to tie the game up at11-11. The teams again trade points to 12-12. SAG gets the pull & is unable to putthe game away going downwind. Bamahucks the disc into the wind that they catchjust inside the sideline past midfield. TheBama player then grips and rips abackhander before SAG can get a markon. A Bama player is deep and starts run-ning, twisting and turning. He backs up &leaps up with one hand & reaches for thedisc. He then falls & bounces off the groundas he somehow manages to hold on tocatch the disc for a stunning, shocking, &agonizing 13-12 victory over OLD SAG! Ata loss for words SAG realizes it lost anopportunity to secure a bid to the quarters.SAG (1-2). Still numb from the loss SAGheads to Tourney Headquarters to drinksome Bass Ale and mingle with the otherteams. As the sunsets SAG parades theragtop convoy from the fields to the SaltyDog for some grub. To cheer up our spiritsa little game of the price is right landsBarndog a free dinner and the Wildwood

TD was the winner of the first round ofcredit card roulette (Winner pays the din-ner for everyone who plays!).

Friday morning SAG faces the former Na-tional & World Champs Old & In the Way(O&ITW) from Colorado (3-0). Coloradohas only one loss in the last two yearsand SAG must take out Colorado to haveany chance to advance to the quarters.SAG loses the flip and this time decidesto pull into the wind to O&ITW. Thegame stays on schedule with each teamscoring downwind for the first 10 points(5-5). Old gets the first break and getsan upwinder and takes the half 8-5. SAGtries to rally in the second half but O&ITWuses the call game against SAG to stopany flow when SAG breaks out upwind. The call game continues with O&ITW con-testing stall counts and catches. Thegame gets heated when Barndog goeschest to chest with O&ITW over a call.Old & In the Way prevails winning 15-9.SAG (1-3)

In the last game of pool play SAG facesHerniated Disc (HD)from West Palm / Mi-ami combo (3-1). SAG loses the flip andpulls the disc upwind to HD. The gamestarts will each team scoring when go-ing downwind. HD gets the first upwinderand takes the half. SAG stays withinreach at 12-9 and 13-10 but cannot getthe next upwinder to close the gap. HDholds off SAG 15-11. SAG goes 1-4 inpool play and does not make the quarterfinals. So a little down SAG decides tojust say F...it and goes to the beach. Itwas during this game that SAG findsKenny Dubin, Sauce’s old buddy fromback in the day. Kenny has been SAG’spersonal tour guide when in Sarasota. We decide to go to the Sport’s Page forsome lunch and some cold brews wherewe meet Lisa, Kenny’s wife, SAG’s fa-vorite fan! Another game of the price isright is won by Barry Leeper comingwithin $2 of the price to win a free lunch!Next stop is the beach for a dip in theGulf, some sun, cold brews, and a killerview of the sunset.

Next stop is the much anticipated partyat Mr. Kelly’s (Chris Kelly’s dad’s place). We arrive at the secluded Beverly Hillstype house on the water where we areshowered with buffet food and cases ofbeer. A short walk thru the woods lead tothe dock where the huge 40 something

foot cruiser is suspended above the wa-ter as we glance at the near full moon.We hook up with Chris’ former mastersteam Chicago (Chronic) and celebratewith them as they went from being 0-2 tofinish at 3-2 and make it to the quarters.Chronic beat the same 2 teams we beatat our regionals (Cranky and Hoss). Andtheir 3rd win was against NY who wewould eventually face the next day.

Day 3, Saturday it’s the consolationbracket for OLD SAG. The Saggers getto play Hoss in it’s first game. This timeSAG is determined to jump out quicklyinstead of falling behind 4-0 to Hoss likeit did at regionals in Raleigh. SAG learnedit’s lesson well and goes up on Hoss 5-0and never lets Hoss into the game. SAGcruises to a 15-7 victory. SAG (2-4)NextSAG faces NY who last year came frombehind to beat SAG at the cap 13-12 &keep SAG out of the quarters. SAGwanted to even the score with NY. SAGpulls upwind to NY who scores downwind. Both teams trade downwind points untilNY gets the first upwinder to take a 2goal lead. SAG answers back with anupwinder and continues on a roll to takethe lead at 5-4. NY calls time out andcomes out & takes the half 8-6. SAGstarts the 2nd half slow and digs a holeby going down 10-6. However just like lastyear SAG rallies & ties the score at 10-

Mark Rosser lays out for the score

10. SAG keeps the flow going and stayspatient in working upwind against the NYzone to score and take an 11-10 lead.SAG keeps the Mojo going and finishesoff NY for the win and the B pool title forthe 2nd year and finishes 9th overall. Af-ter the game NY displays an unusual sideby giving the Saggers a cheer. NY singsa song parody “You are the Chumpions”to the Saggers. A true classic and onefor the archives that JB captured on videorevealing a side of NY that is rarely seen.SAG gives NY a 6 out of a possible 5 forthe spirit vote...much to the surprise ofthe tourney official.

For OLD SAG the road to Sarasota hascome to the end and we now know thatthe road to HI had to go upwind! The dreamof going to Worlds in HI for 2002 will re-main an Ultimate fantasy but it’s a dreamthat lives on! Now its back home to Phillywhere the wind is kinder and it’s time torest those beat up old bones. And thenwe’ll decide if there is still time for:

One Last Ditch......Shot At Glory........OLD SAG!

UPA Nationals Report Nov 1-4

Mike Adlis

The finals for summer league can be the endof one Ultimate season for some players butfor club players it signals the beginning of theseason for Nationals. The months ofSeptember & October require a dedicationwhere family, friends, and work are pushedaside because Ultimate becomes priority.

A demanding schedule of usually 2 prac-tices during the week nights at odd hours,at least one weekend practice on nontourney weekends, combined with yourown workouts in between. Tourney week-ends may include traveling to Chicago forthe Tune Up toruney where 80 of the topteams converge to check out the compe-tition in their respective divisions. Nextcomes sectionals where the top 5-6teams in each division will advance toRegionals where 16 teams playoff untilthe top 2 teams earn bids to the UPA(Ultimate Players Association) NationalChampionship.

This past Nov 1st -4th 60 of the nationstop teams participated in UPA’s champi-onship in Sarasota, FL. The sight of look-ing out over those 30 fields and seeing60 teams in different colored uniformswarming up & running drills is truly anunforgettable picture! There is an excite-ment and anticipation just before playstarts that each team feels in having achance to compete for the National titlethat welcomes you to the Greatest Showon Earth! This year’s Nationals includedthe added bonus of qualifying for the WorldClub Championships to be held in Ha-waii next summer. Different countries will

be sending teams to play for the World Title! It is almost 8:30am: Let the Games Begin!

At nationals all games in all divisions startand end on the same exact schedule soplaying and seeing other games is not pos-sible. Noticeable of local interest on thefirst day of play was Electric Pig (DC / Philacombo) went 2-1 losing only to the Con-dors the defending champs.

The Phila contingency consisted of one timeRage players (Alex Eiteljorg, AndrewLoughrey, Keith Scott, Rick “Ringo”Swedloff, & Brad Xanthopoulos) After ad-

Exercising in the ColdR. Scott Cochrane

Despite the cold temperatures we stillrun and the disk still flies – although ittends to hurt more when it hits your handfunny! Exercising in the cold has its fairshare of hazards, so be sure to prepareproperly before venturing out. Here are afew things to keep in mind for cold weatherworkouts:

Layer your clothing-several layers arewarmer than a single thick layer and youcan remove a layer if necessary. Manypeople like to wear a long sleeve shirtunder their team t-shirt. Certain fabricsare designed to wick the perspirationaway from the body which will help keepyou warmer. You can find them in anyathletic sports shop.

Cover your head-most of your body heat

is lost through your head. This is trueeven if you have more hair than me!

Drink fluids - replenishing your fluids isjust as important during the cold weatheras it is in the heat of summer. Dehydra-tion can increase your risk of frostbite.Water, fruit juice, or of course STRIVEenergy drink are a must before, duringand after the game! Drink even if you arenot thirsty.

Protect your hands - mittens will keepyour hands warmer than gloves, but theymake it tough to catch a disk. Manypeople use leather football receiver’sgloves. Personally, I prefer warm waterSCUBA gloves. The thin rubber materialis great for gripping in wet weather, givesa good tactile feel, and provides just

enough protection against a cold, hard disk.Okay, okay – stop laughing, but it’s true –I really use them!

Stretching is especially important. Don’ttry to stretch or exercise with cold musclesbecause you will increase the risk of in-jury. Always warm up by walking or march-ing in place for at least 5 minutes. Stretchslowly and gently to your own comfortablelimit without bouncing. Try to hold eachstretch 15-30 seconds. Breathing slowlyand deeply will enhance your stretch.Remember your body’s rate of heat pro-duction is less when exercising on a coolor cold day so be sure to dress appropri-ately. The falling temperatures shouldn’tstop you from exercising; just be aware andprepared.

vancing as a higher seed for the secondday, Pig lost to DOG (Boston) in the quar-ters and then finished 6th. Look for Pig toget a bid to Worlds in HI next summer!Congrats to those Phila players!

By the end of the second day quarters forall divisions are set. On Sat in the men’ssemi-finals Jam (San Francisco) wasplaying Furious George (Vancouver). WithJam up 15-14 and Furious going down-wind Furious throws into endzone butdoes not score. A Jam player brings thedisc up to his corner goal line & fakes ahuck and the Furious marker goes downtrying to block the throw. The Jam playertakes advantage to send a huck upwindjust outside the Furious goal line. A travelcall is overruled and Jam scores upwindto beat Furious George 16-14 and ad-vance to the finals. The other men’s semihad Condors (Santa Barbara) beating Dogto return to the finals.

The Sat. showcase game was the Mas-ters finals which featured the last twomasters champs Keg Workers of America(KWA from Seattle) and Old & in the Way(Colorado). KWA took an early lead andwas never really challenge by Colorado. In a reverse trend most of the goals in thesecond half were scored upwind with nei-ther team playing zone. KWA beats Old

& in the Way to defend its title.

Sunday’s first final is the Women’s Openwith Lady Godiva (Boston) playing Riot(Seattle). Godiva was up a few goals inthe second half and was able to defeatRiot to retain their National title. Thisgame featured two former PADA playersBeth Wise for Riot and Chris Cianfranifor Godiva. Chris threw the winning scorefor Godiva and she wins her first Women’sOpen Natioanal title! Congrats to Chris!

In the men’s open final it was Condorsplaying Jam. In an unusual trend for amen’s open final this game featured noth-ing but downwind goals for 28 straightpoints. This game probably will not makethe top ten finals of all time even thoughthe score was never more than a one pointlead. Nothing in the way of the spectacu-lar was on display in this game. A Con-dor upwind goal was negated by a travelcall & another Condor opportunity wasstopped when an observer ruled a discdown. Jam had only one chance at anupwinder when they had a player alonein the endzone but an attempt to catchwhat looked like an easy score wasmacked and Jam was never close afterthat. The last point did feature the game’sonly upwind goal by the Condors to win17-15.

The last final featured Trigger Hippy (Ca)playing Blue Ridge Ultimate (Va). Triggertook an early lead and was in control thewhole game as they won over BRU.Sightings at Nats: Steve Finn playing withBonzi, Melissa Ditz (Backhoe: Triangle,NC), Jon Proctor (Ring of Fire: Triangle,NC), Jen Barton (Tattoo Hottie: NYC), anda complete surprise from out of nowherelooking thin and still drinking beer: Shakaand his lovely wife Karen who are now re-siding in Fl.

That’s all for this year from Sarasota, Fl.But there is one thing missing from thiscast of 60 teams. With PADA’s awesomeUltimate Community of young, up & com-ing Stars of the Game we need more teamsfrom PADA at Nationals! Let’s start now &plan to host Regionals up in the Phila areaand make those Carolina Rebel teams makethat 8 hour trip up North. That way we cansleep in our beds and have a short ride tothe fields. We can have our best teamsplaying in front of our Great Ultimate Com-munity! Let’s get together and send fourteams from PADA next year to the Great-est Show on Earth!

Winter League is Coming!Tom Lenar

During last Winter, many of us couldn’tjust take a little time to rest, and playedpick-up two nights a week through theseason in every kind of inclimate weatheryou’d expect for that time of year. It wasa great time, however, in the process ofthis, we did quite a bit of damage toJohnson Field before we moved on toanother location as the weather began toimprove. The result of this was that afterthe field was repaired in the Spring, wewere told that we would not be able toretain permission to play there in the fu-ture.

As a result of this, we looked for alterna-tives that would help keep those of uswho can’t control themselves from goingoutside and beating up another field thisWinter. One option was to eliminateWinter play all together. Being that

people have been voicing complaintsabout the lack of pick-up games evenwhile Fall League is still going on, it’sunlikely that this option would work.Another alternative was to form an indoorleague that would run through the Win-ter. It’s been less than a year now sincethat idea was first put out into the open, and plans are in place to move forwardwith Winter League 2002.

This new league will hold games at theUnited Sports Training Center inDowningtown on Tuesday and Wednes-day nights. Its about a 45 minute ridefrom Center City. Games are currentlyplanned to begin at 9:00 and 10:00 oneach of those evenings, which is lateenough to keep you out of the rush hourtraffic. The league will begin on January22 and end on March 20. The field area

will be somewhat smaller than a typicalUltimate field, and the playing surface willbe fast. Because of this, games will beplayed with six on the line (4 men/2women), instead of 7. There’s no wind tothrow into, and no rain or snow to fall onyou. The indoor complex is heated, butnot so much that you wouldn’t be able tocool down between points.

You can register a full team if you’d like. Ifthat’s not an option for you, then you canregister as part of a core or as an individual.

Check out the details of the new leagueand register online, or send Jon Francisyour questions.

RTS 9Oct 27-28

Brian Canniff

RTS 9 was a 13-team event held inMonmouth County’ Freehold NJ (that’sabout 75 minutes from Philly near GreatAdventure). Teams came from MD, RI,NJ, PA, and NY for the one-day event. Youmay remember the nice by Dr. Pull, took2nd with a harrowing 1-point win over tra-ditional rival NYCE. Animal, DonkeyBomb, and NYCE all tied to win the SpiritAward. Nice work Philly! Wins and SpiritAward is an amazingly good day andhasn’t been repeated at an RTS eventsince RTS 6 when Jay Soda’s FYeah wonOPEN and OPEN SPIRIT.

In Open, host team Retired to Stud com-bined with some guys from NYC’s Man-dible to form Maxilla. This team beat allcomers, including parent-team Mandible.Maxilla’s toughest game was an ‘at thehorn’ comeback against 4th place Balti-more. Baltimore had been up 11-8 with10 minutes to play. Rochester, includinglocal NJ masters, took 2nd running out ofsteam in their fifth and last game in theexciting 4-0 v. 4-0 final against Maxilla.Special mention to RTS’s Mitch Baker whois an offensive work horse and almost im-possible to cover near the disc. Solidperformances by Kasey R., Matt L., androokie league sensation Dave “Nupe” N.and Brian/Mary C. helped round out thePhilly contingent on the winning team.RIUT (Rhode Island) won the Spirit Awardin Open.

RTS 9 raised over $400 for charity – aspecial education program at NorthleyMiddle School in Aston, PA. ThanksPADA Board for the continuing support ofRTS events!

Some RTS event in the near future willattempt to feature multiple venues and upto 50 teams in 2002. We’ll need an as-sistant TD or two at the second site. Letme know if you’re interested in helping [email protected]
