Odor Evaluation and Modeling

TRC is nationally recognized in the field of odor measurement, odor identification, odor modeling, and odor control engineering. We have conducted hundreds of studies involving:• Sensory quantification of odor emissions• Identification and quantification of specific

odorants• Determination of the impact of specific

emission sources on community odor levels and the degree of control required to prevent odor complaints

• Specification of odor control systems• Product claims

TRC’s dispersion odor modeling techniques are designed to predict instantaneous occurrences of odors at various receptor locations, for both point and area sources.

The model can accurately predict potential odor impacts for odor control systems under design, and it can predict control requirements necessary to preclude odor complaints.

TRC has a fully equipped olfactory laboratory for sensory odor evaluation. The laboratory contains dynamic dilution, forced-choice triangle olfactometers and a standard butanol reference olfactometer. Sensory evaluation procedures meet ASTM standard practices. TRC has also designed and assembled portable dynamic dilution, forced-choice olfactometers for use in the field. These mobile olfactometers also meet ASTM standard practices. TRC also provides emission sampling systems used for sample collection.

TRC manages the continuous odor monitoring of an agricultural facility in the Midwest in support of litigation. Forty local odor monitors were hired and trained by TRC.

TRC has evaluated odors and testified about neighbor exposures for many industrial sources such as wood treatment plants, organic waste to fertilizer plants, paper recycling plants, food production plants.

TRC evaluates significant sources of odor at WWTPs to determine potential contributions to local odor levels and to evaluate the efficacy of odor control systems.

For a waste to energy plant, TRC performs odor monitoring and responds to complaint calls from local citizens through the 24-hour odor complaint hotline managed by TRC.
