INTRODUCTION

Good air quality improves personal wellbeing and the health of a customer who – every

day – has to use these enclosed spaces.

Microorganisms and mold release spores, cells and volatile organic compounds into the

air, and these cause not just poor air but also serious effects on the respiratory system.

Lead carbon oxide, breathable particulates and biological agents all contribute to

worsening the quality of the air in these environments.

Many risk factors may be modified thanks to a greater awareness, one that seeks to adopt

adequate preventive measures that are geared to making such environments safe and

easy to use.

MVT srls has always studied complete systems (equipment and detergent products) that

aid operators in this task. With this in mind, and in exclusive for Italy, it proposes GelOdor,

an absolutely new approach, and a radical solution to the problem.

The purpose of this proposal

The proposal has as its aim the presentation of a particular methodology, one that seeks

to remove any odour from within enclosed spaces, and at the same time guarantees fresh,

lightly-perfumed air. The concentration of people in these spaces, along with the climatic

conditions of the different seasons, makes it necessary to treat the air, and so reduce the

impact of bad odour.

Description of the technology

Although MVT has been producing and selling liquid products for the treatment and deodorisation of air for many years, the company chose a while back to research and develop new materials that would avoid the need for aerosols, with the related problems and disadvantages arising from the presence of water. The consequence of this is a new solution based on the principle of reduction/oxidisation that comes about between the flow of malodorous molecules and the active elements contained in a new, gel-based product called GelOdor. The reaction that develops is not linear but, as shown in the diagram below, shows a sharp decrease in the level of odours at the specific point at which neutralisation happens. This reaction gives elevated results of above 65%, although due to the laws of chemistry this can never arrive at 100%. Specific release systems have been developed which allow the end user to maintain a constant level of treatment all day long throughout the entire year.

Gel-O-Dor is a polymer matrix containing active agents which are released following a spectrum model of linear diffusion. It remains active for several months. Effectively, it is a flow of nano-particles of the active ingredients, which react with the molecules responsible for bad odours, making them odour-free and eliminating them. After evaluating each individual situation to understand how bad odours are being produced, the company is able to identify the exact quantity of gel necessary to treat the environment and reach the best possible results. All Gel-O-Dor products are authorised for sale in Italy by the Ministry of Health, and have been studied and tested, and are guaranteed non-toxic, by the Long Lasting Innovation Laboratories, accredited by the French Ministry for Education, Teaching and Research.

Depending on each individual case, the air in small, medium and large spaces may be treated with bars of Gel-O-Dor contained in suitable diffusers that are placed inside the ventilation conduits, avoiding any contact with hot air emissions, in such a way as to guarantee continuous emission of the neutralising molecules into the environment to be treated. Product activity is guaranteed by the air flow generated by the ventilation system of the carriage.

The number of diffusers necessary is in relation to the volume of the air to be treated and the intensity of the odours. Generally each diffuser is capable of treating a variable amount

of air of between 500 and 800 m3/h.

To carry out this type of treatment we suggest the use of GelOdor from the range of gel-

based products. As well as its active neutralising agents, this contains a perfume which is

constantly released into the air.

Practical experience in the field has shown that the Gel-O-Dor product is effective for a period of between 3 to 5 months, during which time the user may easily sense the olfactory trace of the product, that is, its perfume. To guarantee the constant treatment capacity of the product it is necessary to substitute a part of the product placed inside the carriages at regular intervals. Practical experience in similar installations – underground railways and trains – suggests the following renewal cycles for the gel:
