For my rst time away from home to study, Burgmann was the best choice. It is modern and safe, and the community of students is like a family away from home. e facilities and services are excellent, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable.

Why Burgmann?

2

Our community engenders a simple purpose – that everyone achieves their highest possible potential, academically and personally.

Our learning community is based on ‘shared learning’ amongst residents. Academic support is both received and given by all. Burgmann expects all residents to give as well as receive academic support from each other. We oer our residents the opportunity to balance study with the many other interests available to explore, whether they are intellectual, social, sporting, religious, political or artistic. e choices are yours to pursue.

Burgmann emphasises individual freedom and growth on the one hand and collegiate commitment, responsibility and contribution on the other. is balance is integral to creating a truly supportive and vibrant learning atmosphere.

Burgmann College is proud to be the only residence on the ANU campus where both the Principal and Deputy Principal live on-site. Together with our Residential Advisors, Pastoral Fellow and Postgraduate Community Coordinator, there is always someone on-site to assist residents – no matter the time of day or night.

Burgmann is a single community with no hierarchies of residential membership. Residents have a say in running the college.

THE VILLAGEe Village at Burgmann is more than just a place to live - it is a vibrant community of postgraduate residents in a stunning corner of the ANU campus next to Lake Burley Grin. e Village has the National Botanic Gardens as its backyard and everything on campus is only a short walk or bike ride away. Canberra’s city centre (called Civic) is within walking distance and provides plenty of restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs to visit whilst you take a break from your study. Public transport is readily available with a bus stop out the front of the College.

e Village prides itself on its community spirit. ere are many opportunities to get involved in sports and arts activities in an environment with a strong culture of participation. Regular social activities provide an opportunity to relax with fellow residents.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

e best part about living at Burgmann is the balance between a study-friendly environment and all of the sports, arts, academic and social activities that a college life involves. e Village at Burgmann provides the perfect environment for the more “mature” student who is still interested in being involved in a college community. e apartments in the Village are modern and comfortable and provide the perfect quiet study environment to escape to when required. At the same time, however, there are endless opportunities to get involved in all aspects of the college whenever a student’s workload permits.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

Moving to Burgmann was an easy and enjoyable process. Having never lived at college before, I had no idea what to expect. I was greeted very warmly from the moment I arrived and oered plenty of opportunities to meet people straight away. e facilities are of very high standard and there is ample support oered to all residents. I found the transition to college and specically the Village at Burgmann a very smooth process.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmannin 2015?

Burgmann is very suited to a student who is keen to get involved in the college community and lifestyle, rather than someone simply looking for on-site accommodation. ere are endless opportunities to be involved in various sports, arts, academic and social activities and the Village at Burgmann is a constant hub of interaction. All residents are strongly encouraged to participate in these activities and immerse themselves in the college community.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

With limited experience of living at college, my expectation was that there would be a huge focus on socialising and partying, rather than striving for achievement at university. Burgmann, however, completely dees this college stereotype! Academic excellence is encouraged and celebrated by all residents and the college provides year-round study support for students from all academic backgrounds. e college is lled with both undergraduate and postgraduate students who continue to inspire me with their commitment to, and achievements within, their studies.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

e best thing about living at Burgmann has denitely been the opportunity to meet new people. It can be quite isolating being a PhD student, and if it wasn't for living at Burgmann it would have been much harder to meet other students. ere is such a diversity of people from dierent backgrounds and studying dierent things, that I have been exposed to so many dierent personalities and learnt about other people’s interests. Many of these things I may never have had an opportunity to learn about otherwise.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

I had no idea what to expect moving to Burgmann. I had never lived in a college before, nor had I ever moved by myself so it was pretty daunting. However, upon arrival the sta were so kind and helpful and I have a fantastic RA who continues to go out of her way to make sure everyone in our block is ne.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmannin 2015?

As a student from outside of Canberra (NZ), I would advise students to get in touch with someone at your prospective academic school and try to at least have one person who you can contact on arrival. I think it’s important to start building a relationship with sta in your school as early as possible because they are the ones who will keep you updated throughout your university life.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

e one thing I didn't expect from Burgmann was the amount of student run initiatives and activities. ere is literally something available for everyone to get involved in. I wasn't expecting the level of community that is apparent at the college, and it's a really great environment to be a part of.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

I played women's basketball, I'm playing netball, I helped with the B Block bake o and I am also helping with the ‘My Block Rules’ cooking competition.

e College facilitates academic assistance for postgraduates through a peer learning community.

Our peer learning community is led by the Principal, Deputy Principal, Postgraduate Village Community Coordinator and Residential Advisors (RAs). RAs are residents appointed by the College to undertake pastoral and leadership duties and to lead the Academic Assistance Network. ey come under the supervision of the Deputy Principal.

ere are one to two RAs per block in the Village. RAs will make themselves known to residents in their block and around the College. ey oer assistance in a variety of ways:

• providing general advice on study, research and workload management

• connecting residents with peers studying in the same subject area

• suggesting strategies for more eective study techniques

• caring for individual’s issues, and helping to nd the best ways and people to assist block, group and individual care and well-being as well as conict resolution

RAs are residents with strong academic performance and a demonstrated caring attitude, and will be able to help you adjust to your new home here at Burgmann.

Each RA is responsible for a portfolio. Portfolios have either an academic focus or a community development focus. ere is also an opportunity to have your work published in the Burgmann Journal, the College’s peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal published annually.

e Burgmann Residents’ Association (BRA) is the organisation run by a committee of residents to support all those who live here at Burgmann, in all facets of their college lives. BRA organises and initiates a wide range of activities and events for residents to get involved in, providing essential social, artistic and sporting activities. e committee also ensures that all residents are given a voice in College matters, acting as an important bridge between the college administration and the residents. BRA provides the voice for the residents in the running of the College through communication with the Principal and the College Council.

A sample of events and activities organised by BRA:

BRA Sports Reps will make sure that no matter whether you're a sporting superstar, or the kid who would run away from the ball in a soccer match, you'll become involved in College sport either as a participant, or kitted out in Burgmann colours supporting the team on the eld, court, track or wherever!

Burgmann competes in the Interhall Sports Shield, an annual competition in which all the residential halls, colleges and lodges at ANU participate. Burgmann has a strong record of placing highly in this competition. ere are plenty of sports to get involved in. Sports include: Inward Bound, AFL, Rugby, Volleyball, Hockey, Softball, Athletics, Ultimate Disc as well as many others.

Keep an eye out for Inward Bound (IB) which is held in the rst semester every year. IB is an interhall competition where multiple divisions from each hall, college and lodge on the ANU campus battle it out to see who has the best endurance and orienteering skills. Blindfolded and dropped in an unknown location in the bush, the divisions race to get to the IB end point.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

e diversity of people and interests we have here. ere is a wide variety of specialties and studies covered by Burgmann students, which is a great way to gain insight into dierent elds and learn a bit more about the world around you. Having so many backgrounds present at Burgmann, from interstate to international, also adds to the great collection of experience and knowledge between the students.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

I found the transition very easy. I didn't know what to expect initially, but the great Medicine contingent has made my move from interstate much smoother than I envisioned. My Residential Advisors were also a great help with settling me into the College environment and meeting other students.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmannin 2015?

Don't be afraid to give shared accommodation a chance. I was originally unsure about the idea when trying to decide on a residence, but after speaking with a few friends who helped my decision I haven't looked back. While it seems daunting that you can't pick your housemates, you're going to end up with some great people with whom you’ll remain friends for a long time after the Burgmann days. It's also a great experience to get used to working and living with others on a daily basis.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

e level of support and range of activities and events on at any one time. You can get involved in as many of the events as you like, which caters to all, perfectly based on your study commitments and interests. e supportive environment at Burgmann is exceptionally welcoming. From the team of Residential Advisors, Sta and of course Sally and Dr Phil, everyone is happy to help out where they can or available for a chat about anything.

How do you feel you might be dierent for having lived at Burgmann?

I wouldn't have such an appreciation of the wider world as I do today. e people I've met during my short time here have added so much to my Burgmann experience; even purely from a geographical level, gaining insights into other parts of the world and those from interstate that I wouldn't have encountered elsewhere. Not to mention developing how I interact with others at a personal level.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

I was involved with Basketball this year. It has been a great avenue to meet and get involved with the undergraduate students, whom I don't see regularly living in the Village. My busy timetable has limited my ability to participate in many extracurricular events but I have been able to attend a majority, particularly Burgmann sport. ey're a great way of bringing the whole college together to support our students competing against other colleges.

What’s the best thing about living at Burgmann?

Apart from the convenience and the beautiful spot, it is denitely the people. In the Village we have people from all around the world doing all sorts of degrees I have never even heard of. In the Village you have the unique opportunity to meet these sorts of people that broaden your horizons just by having a chat at dinner.

How did you nd moving to Burgmann? Was it what you expected?

It was even better than I expected, in the little and the big things. It was so lovely, from day one you feel like part of a community. Even though most people spend lots of time working and do something completely dierent from you there is still that understanding that we are all here with a unique opportunity for this moment of our lives. People smile and say hello when you are walking around, I didn't expect it to feel like such a community.

Do you have any advice for students applying to the ANU and Burgmannin 2015?

My advice would be to be open to what Canberra and the ANU can oer, it is a beautiful bush city and living under the botanical gardens and Black Mountain here at Burgmann is a real treat. Make sure you bring some walking shoes and denitely invest in a good second hand bike. It is the best way to see the lake and get around this enormous campus.

What’s the one thing you didn’t expect about Burgmann?

I didn't expect the rooms to be so nice and comfortable. I had in my head it would be a cramped room and that it would get very cold in winter but it’s lovely and open with a really good heater and a huge window that lets so much sunlight in. It is very enjoyable just pottering around in your room.

How do you feel you might be dierent for having lived at Burgmann?

I can denitely say from living here that I have become more condent, more happy and content. I think that comes from living in a community with such a variety of ages, backgrounds and interests. I think I have grown to become more myself.

What are you involved in at Burgmann?

At college each term I really love to get involved in the sports they have to oer. is year I have played hockey, softball and soccer. It is a really great way to unwind and keep t as well as getting to know some of the other residents. I also really enjoy going along to other events like the great comedy debate and the odd bar night. ese are all college run things but I also just really love heading out with my friends from college and getting dinner or an ice-cream from the cinema nearby.
