The Open Education Resource is a openly licensed educational materials for teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain that are useful to understand the basics of Computer Networks. OER is built as a website using wordpress with the link “https://oercomputernetworksandsecurity.wordpress.com”

The OER is very useful learning platform for different types of learners who expect different learning process and hence it offers lessons in presentation slides (Only visual effect) as well as Videos (Multimedia effect) and course materials for different learners (eg.slow or fast). Students can download the materials available in the link mentioned above

The design decisions involved in the creation of this OER were of broadly three types:1. Content Decisions2. Pedagogic Decisions3. Technology Decisions

Content Decisions

Nowadays, data and information communication plays a vital role in the world. A computer network or data network is a digital telecommunications network which allows nodes to share resources. In computer networks, networked computing devices exchange data with each other using a data link. The connections between nodes are established using either cable media or wireless media.

In the computer network, devices that originate, route and terminate the data are called network nodes. Nodes can include hosts such as personal computers, phones, servers as well as networking hardware. Two such devices can be said to be networked together when one device is able to exchange information with the other device, whether or not they have a direct connection to each other. In most cases, application-specific communications protocols are layered (i.e. carried as payload) over other more general communications protocols.

Computer networks support an enormous number of applications and services such as access to the World Wide Web, digital video, digital audio, shared use of application and storage servers, printers, and fax machines, and use of email and instant messaging applications as well as many others. Computer networks differ in the transmission medium used to carry their signals, communications protocols to organize network traffic, the network's size, topology and organizational intent. The best-known computer network is the Internet. In order to provide security to the data in the Internet, network security is very much needed. Hence the content decisions are OSI layers, Network Topology, Network Connecting Devices, TCP, Network Security Basics, RSA algorithm. It is much useful for beginners in network.

Pedagogic Decisions

Different teaching methodologies are needed for different learners (slow and fast) to understand the concept efficiently. Hence this OER offers content through presentation slides in visual effect and videos as well as course materials.

Cognitive Levels of Questions to be asked along with the resources – Mostly Recall to Apply level question which are inserted in the learning materials itself.

Separate Assessment Strategies – Multiple choice questions for recall level are given in quizstar.

While developing the Out-of-Class and In-class activities, the major technology decisions taken were:a. Tool used for creating screencast – Screen o matic b. Tool used for slides –MS Power pointc. Tool used for assessment – Quizstar and Gnomio Moodle Sited. Tool used for feedback –Google forms and Gnomio Moodle Sitee. Tool used to upload created screencast – Youtube.

Customizing the word press

Click edit and customize. The required content of the web page are added in the OER. Sample screenshots of word press are given below. The site itself guides the user to

develop the webpage and hence it is simple to use.

As the working with screen casting software is well defined in previous works clearly, that part is omitted in this report.

Gmail is mandatory for generating google forms. For every gmail account these forms can be generated at free of cost and can be used as feedback form which is used to measure the effectiveness of OER from consumer point of view.

WORKING WITH GOOGLE FORMSGoogle forms can be used for variety of data entry options. This OER contains a

Google form that allows students to provide feedback and suggestions on the topics they learn through this OER.

WORKING WITH QUIZSTAR

Login to the website http://quizstar.4teachers.org/indexs.jsp and register as a instructor. Select the domain and prepare a quiz. The quiz can be attempted by students from their login and the detailed report can be viewed from the instructor login.

LESSON SETTINGS

TEACHING - LEARNING CONTEXT:

The licence learning materials are useful for the students to get the knowledge about the basic concepts of computer networks and security. Student can reuse and download the learning material many number of times. At the end of the day 5, they should attend the assessment in the form of quiz in QuizStar site create their own login and select the class CSE & IT and solve the application in design problems. Finally students submit their feedback through Google forms.
