Please allow me to take this moment to introduce myself. I’m Daphne Dowdy and I have the great pleasure of joining you as part of the OETA family. I come to you by way of PBS stations in West Texas and Miami, Florida but I grew up watching OETA as a kid in Tulsa. In fact, Big Bird taught me to count to 10 in Spanish; Dad and I bonded over Austin City Limits and This Old House; and after Dad passed away, Mom and I shared meaningful evenings with BJ and The Movie Club. Thank you for making OETA available for me as a kid and young adult. I’m thrilled to do my part now to repay your generosity. On to business. You’ve likely noticed a few changes here in Odyssey. Our printer closed up shop so we are taking the opportunity to upgrade our look and content a bit. We hope to do more so, please, let us know what you think at [email protected]. A big thanks to the 6500 people who called in or clicked online to contribute during Festival. Final numbers are in and you made this the best Festival since 2007 at $1,061,500 - blowing away our $1M goal. What a way to honor the powerful educational service OETA Members have built over 58 years. YOU are positively affecting Oklahoma in a profound way. Thank you.

Watch Coming Back with Wes Moore,

TuesdaysMay 13-27 at 7PM

U.S. Army veteran and best-selling author Wes Moore has found a new mission – helping his fellow veterans reintegrate into society and helping citizens learn how to help make reintegration easier. His new series, COMING BACK WITH WES MOORE, reveals the experiences of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans as they return home to their families and society. The series recounts Moore’s search for answers to some of the most difficult questions related to returning from war. “We want to better humanize re-integration by taking the audience into the lives of these men and women as they return from war,” said Moore, who is an Army combat

veteran. “I want to make sure people understand these stories and who these people are who are coming back from combat.”

COMING BACK WITH WES MOORE airs Tuesdays May 13-27 at 7 p.m.

Also this month, OETA continues to honor our veterans with special programs dedicated to uncovering, sharing and preserving the history created by their service. On Memorial Day, Monday May 26 at 8 p.m., OETA presents a special encore of OKLAHOMA WORLD WAR II STORIES, featuring compelling stories from Oklahoma’s Greatest Generation as they recount their time in the European and

Pacific theaters, as well as the home front. Then at 9 p.m. on Monday May 26, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: DEATH AND THE CIVIL WAR examines how the generation of Americans that survived the Civil War lived the rest of their lives with grief and loss. Their struggle to give meaning to the seemingly senseless deaths of so many still haunts us today. Then on, Tuesday May 27 at 8 p.m., NOVA reveals D-DAY’s SUNKEN SECRETS. Dive teams, submersibles and underwater robots will identify ingenious technology that helped the Allies overcome the German defenses, and Allied veterans return to the site of this epic battle to share their harrowing stories.

Follow the U.S. Army veteran as he chronicles the lives of different soldiers as they attempt to reintegrate into society, establish new identities and – for many – find a new mission.

BEWARE THE SWARM & LEAVE IT TO BEAVERS!

Did you know scientists consider beavers as brilliant hydro-engineers? On Wednesday May 14 at 10

p.m., NATURE explores why these natural builders are being recruited to accomplish everything from finding water in a bone-dry desert to recharging water tables and coaxing life back into damaged lands. A growing number of scientists, conservationists and grass-roots environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools when it comes to reversing the disastrous effects of climate change and world-wide water shortages. Once valued for their fur or hunted as pests, these industrious rodents are seen in a new light through the eyes of this novel assembly of beaver enthusiasts and “employers” who reveal the ways in which the presence of beavers can transform and revive landscapes. Then on Wednesday May 21 at 10 p.m., NATURE looks at some of the most extraordinary swarms on the planet, including a view from inside a locust swarm, mayflies along the Mississippi, 17-year cicadas, and brine fly hatches over Lake Victoria. Superswarms of finch-like quelea in Africa merit attempts at control through assaults on their roosts, while aggressive swarms of silver carp in North American seem able to overcome any kind of restraint. Dangerous swarms of killer bees, however, can be controlled to the point that they can be worn as a human bee suit. But beyond the power of sheer numbers, increasingly complex and organized swarms eventually give rise to swarm intelligence that allows complex decisions to be made.

WHEN COAL WAS KINGOETA goes BACK IN TIME to a time when coal brought big money to Oklahoma.

When people speak about energy in Oklahoma today they refer to oil and gas, but a century

ago coal was king and Oklahoma had plenty. J.J. McAlister attracted the railroads into Indian Territory with the promise of cheap and abundant coal to fuel their expansion westward – making McAlister and a handful of coal barons very rich. For the men and boys who went into the mines and dug in the dark it was a dirty and dangerous way to eke out a meager living. Most miners would go to work before sunrise and come home after dark, waiting till Sunday to see the light. OETA’s historical documentary series BACK IN TIME explores a period before statehood when the promise of steady pay brought immigrants from Europe to work in mines that were among the most dangerous in the world. Communities flourished in the sunshine even

as lives were lost in the darkness below, as workers struggled with the backbreaking job of hauling to the surface ton after ton of “Oklahoma Coal.” Don’t miss an all-new BACK IN TIME,

What’s behind the mysterious arrival of this apex predator in an area where it’s rarely been seen for hundreds of years? Are deadly encounters with tourists inevitable?

100 YEARS OF OKLAHOMA EXTENSIONThursday May 8 at 7 p.m.Discover the history of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the people and programs that make it a vital service to Oklahoma today. Early Extension agents crisscrossed the state in horses and buggies, trains and the occasional Model-T, showing farmers and ranchers a new type of agriculture. Those early days were the start of boys’ and girls’ clubs, which eventually became the 4-H program, and home demonstration programs for families.

Today’s Extension service is still a vital service in Oklahoma, providing scientifically based and unbiased research to agricultural producers, helping them increase yields and be good stewards of the land, as well as overcome obstacles like pests, diseases and drought. Short courses such as Master Cattleman help producers improve efficiency and profitability of their operations. Local educators can provide information on everything from gardening to bedbugs, tailored for their part of the state.

Take a look back at the start of the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, visit with some of the people and programs that serve Oklahomans today, and see how Extension will be there in the future for the people of our state.

Statewide Poll Results

A new statewide poll shows Oklahomans consider OETA the state’s most trusted institution.

A new statewide poll shows Oklahomans consider OETA the state’s most trusted institution. OETA, Oklahoma’s only statewide educational television network, is also the state’s only PBS member station.

The University of Oklahoma Public Opinion Learning Laboratory (OU POLL) released the comprehensive results from a recent statewide survey conducted to learn how well OETA serves children and adults across the state.

“These poll results validate OETA’s fundamental role in providing essential educational content and services that enrich the quality of life for all Oklahomans,” Dan Schiedel, OETA Executive Director, said. “The responses overwhelmingly demonstrate the strong support Oklahomans have for OETA, as well as the tremendous impact our programs and resources have in their lives, and, we are humbled by this response.”

According to survey participants from across the state, OETA – a state agency – is the most trusted among all government and media organizations and provides some of the most beneficial state services such as improving literacy levels for children (91.2 percent) and adults (81.5 percent). Additional survey highlights: State Funding: More than 90 percent of Oklahomans believe state funding for OETA is a smart investment. The majority of Oklahomans support state funding for OETA (80.6 percent).

Most Trusted: According to 89.1 percent of Oklahomans, OETA is the most trusted organization in the state. And, OETA remains Oklahoma’s source for the most trusted news and public affairs programming, with 86.3 percent trusting OETA more than any other network. Most Valuable: Close to 85 percent of Oklahomans believe educational television is one of the most valuable services provided by the state of Oklahoma, while 86.5 percent believe OETA is the most important content provider. Most Approved: OETA is the most approved media provider in Oklahoma, with 86.4 percent rating OETA highest in satisfaction. Also, the poll results found that 87.5 percent of Oklahomans watch OETA.

Explore the OutdoorsWith OETA

This spring, OETA, PBS KIDS and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) have partnered for the annual Explore the Outdoors initiative, which encourages families to celebrate nature and the outdoors this spring. PBS KIDS kicks off Earth Month with themed on-air programming and online and mobile content. Families will have the option to continue their explorations with OETA at Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, Oklahoma on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The day of discover and exploration will include hands-on activities, nature tours with park guides, picnic areas, play areas and OETA goodies. Bring a picnic lunch, wear comfortable shoes and don’t forget to hydrate. More information about the event is available at www.oeta.tv .
