ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
oday’s celebration of the Lord’s Day falls between the memorials of two martyrs or groups of martyrs. Yesterday, October 17, was the memorial of Saint Ignatius of Antioch. Tomorrow, October 19, is the memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues and Companion martyrs. Since the words martyr and martyrdom are used by other religions and can even be used in relation to a purely secular mind set, it may be beneficial to take a look at the
Catholic understanding of martyrs and martyrdom.
A martyr is someone who bears witness to the truth with his or her own life. For this reason, the Catechism of the Catholic Church treats martyrdom with the Eighth Commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Ex 20:16). “Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means bearing witness even unto death. The mar-tyr bears witness to Christ who died and rose, to whom he is united by charity. He bears witness to the truth of the faith and of Christian doctrine. He endures death through an act of fortitude” (CCC 2473).
St. Ignatius of Antioch was martyred around 110 AD for refusing to worship the Roman gods. In one of the letters he wrote while being transported to Rome, St. Ignatius explained: “All the pleasures of the world, and all the kingdoms of this earth, shall profit me nothing. It is better for me to die in behalf of Jesus Christ, than to reign over all the ends of the earth. ‘For what shall a man be profited, if he gain the whole world, but lose his own soul?’ Him I seek, who died for us: Him I desire, who rose again for our sake. This is the gain which is laid up for me.”
Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and six others were Jesuit missionaries sent to evangelize the Native American Indians between northern New York and southeastern Canada (at the time this was called New France). They were martyred between 1642 and 1649. The first to be martyred, Rene Goupil was struck with a tomahawk for making the Sign of the Cross on some children he was catechizing. Some, like Isaac Jogues, were captured and mis-treated for a time by one tribe of Indians or another before escaping or being released. After spending some time in Europe to recuperate, St. Isaac Jogues willing returned to New France so he could continue evangelizing the Indians. He was ultimately martyred. The martyrs are examples of men and women who remained faithful to Christ. They show that it is possible, by God’s grace, to remain faithful in difficult situations. All holy martyrs of God, pray for us! Father Richard Yevchak, IVE
One of the particular charisms of the IVE (Institute of the Incarnate Word) is to preach the Spiritual Exercises according to Ignatius of Loyola. The priests are specially trained for this, and are sought out by many in their parishes, seminar-ies, and houses of formation on both East and West coasts, but never before have they held them in Minnesota– until this year!
Father Mariano Varela, IVE is preaching the Spiritual Exercises at Schoenstatt retreat center in Sleepy Eye, Mn from Jan 4-7, 2016. There are only a number of spots available for this retreat, so if you are interested please contact the Parish office at 388-2995. Deadline for registration is November 1st. Registration infor-mation is on the bulletin board in the Gather Area.
This retreat is silent, and includes all meals, Mass, Confession, Talks, Personal Spiritual Direction, and lodging at the beautiful Schoenstatt Retreat Center. The fee of $70/day for 3 full days is made payable to Schoenstatt, and supports the Sisters and their facilities.
