CONVENTION OF CHRISTIAN CHURCHES SET FOR THIS WEEKCongregations From 49 Districts in Seven Counties With 200 in Attendance'Will Be Held at St. Johns, Lasting Three Days, Commencing Tuesday.

will be the convention of theChristian churches of the Northwestdistrict to be held at the ChristianChurch at St. Johns, March 21 to 21 in-

clusive.The churches included in the North-

west district comprise those fromClackamas, Multnomah, Marion, Polk,Washington, Yamhill and- - Tillamookcounties. In these counties there are49 churches of Christ and it is ex-pected that from the congregations,Kndeavor societies and Sunday schoolsof the 49 churches, at least 200 men,women and children will attend theconference.

The first session of the conference isscheduled for Tuesday night.

A school of methods,' Including ele-mentary, intermediate and adultclasses, will be an opening featuretor all the convention sessions.

The morning sessions will open at8:30 and conclude at noon; beginningat 1:30 o'clock the" afternoon meetingswill continue until 4.

Among the out-of-to- speakers whowill appear on the programme are:Howard McConnell, of Dallas; W. F.Reeder, of Corbett; J. X. McConnell,of McMinnville; J. YV. Baker, of Seattle;Mrs. Mary Ashley, of Forest Grove;Mrs. L. R. Dunn, of Gladstone; B. F.Clay, of Hillsboro, and B. L. Hicks, ofIsewberg.

All phases of religious work will beincluded in the work of the conference.

Dr. J. Earl Else, president of Multno-mah County Sunday School Associa-tion, will preside at the convention tobe held at the First CongregationalChurch, March 28-2- 9. In his position ascounty president and as superintend-ent of one of the most efficiently or-ganized Sunday schools in the city, Dr.Else has gained a peculiar knowledgeof the opportunities before the Sundayschools in Portland, and practical ex-perience ia Sunday school manage-ment.

In giving the second in his series ofsermon-lectur- es on "The Preachers ofProtestantism" at the First MethodistEpiscopal Church tonight. Dr. FrankI. Loveland will delve into history, giv-ing among other things the reason, ashe sees it, for the French Revolution.His topic will be "Henry of Navarre,the Huguenot of France." The dis-course promises to be the most thrillingdescription of former days in Europeyet eriven by him. "Christianity in theFlames," "The Carboniferous Era ofReligion" and "Saint Bartholomew'sDay" will be topics to be discussed. Inthe morning the subject will be, "TheUnseen and Unknown God."

Thursday night Dr. Loveland 'gavethe second in his series of Lenten ad-dresses. The subject was "The SevenWords of the Master." and under thishead, the second words. "In Paradise,"were considered. The attendance wasthe largest in months. Next Thursdaynight he will speak upon the thirdwords, "Thy Mother."...

The 100th anniversary of the death ofthe Rev. Francis Asbury, first Metho-dist bishop and one of the most apos-tolic men in the world's history, willbe observed throughout AmericanMethodism this year, in commemorationof his death, which occurred March 31,lSlti. Irk general, annual and districtconferences. in churches. Suudayschools and Epworth Leagues, the factsof his life, his incalculable services toAmerican Christianity and his part inthe propagation of Methodism will becelebrated.

The Asbury centennial will be ed

with a great mass meeting inCentenary Methodist Episcopal Church,Dr. T. W. Lane, pastor. Sunday after-noon. April 2. at 2:30 o'clock. The anni-versary has been planned by a commit-tee appointed by the Methodist min-isters' meeting, consisting of Dr. C. E.Cline. Dr. E. O. Eldridge and Dr. J. W.McDougall. The superintendent of thedistrict will preside. A great chorusof all Methodist Churches will lead thecongregation in the singing of greatWesleyan hymns. Three themes will

,be presented: (1) "The Life and Workof Asbury and His Influence on Ameri-can Civilization."' (2) "Methodism atPresent. Where it Is and What it Is."(3) "Methodism in. the Future, ItsProspects and Opportunities." AllMethodist pastors are asked to presentthe subject of Asbury to their ownpeople the last Sunday in March.

A contest is on with the Salem school.The schools are evenly matched. TheSalem school last Sunday had an at-tendance of 384. an offering of J22.27.and 31 new members. The Portlandschool had an attendance of 359, an of-fering of $25.10, and 36 new members.Portland now has four points to itscredit and Salem two.

This morning at 11 o'clock Rev.Georire Darsie will take as his subject,"To Every Man His Work." His themeat 7:30 will be "An Ever-Livin- g Ques-tion." In the morning there .will beone anthem by the quartet, "Hear, Oh,My People." by Stevenson.

In the evening they will sing "AndGod Shall Wipe Away all Tears," byCoombs. Mrs. Alexander and Mr. Man-na- n

The general conference of the Meth-odist Episcopal Church will convene atSaratoga Springs. N. Y., Monday, May1. at 10 A. M. The special trains, whichtake the delegates from the West, arescheduled to arrive at Saratoga Springsnot later than 9 o'clock Saturday morn-ing preceding the conference. On Sun-day. April 30, it w planned to have alarire mass meeting in the afternoon, atwhich time Bishop Earl Cranston, ofWashington, senior bishop, will preach.

Beginning with today the St. JamesLutheran Churfrh will have the sessionof the Sunday school on Sunday morn-ing. The object is to get those attend-ing the Sunday school to also attendthe church services and vice versa.

The revival meetings at CentenaryMethodist Episcopal Church, conductedby Jack Godwin, the aredrawing large crowds and many con-verts are being made. Mr. Godwin im-presses everyone with his sincerity andearnestness in trying to undo the rec-ord of the past in his life. The meet-ings will continue every night for anindefinite period. The pastor. Dr.Lane, will preach this morning.

Companies of church members toconduct the every member canvasswill be formed today at the CalvaryPresbyterian Church and a canvassof the entire membership will be madeduring the day. After the completionof the work a praise and victory serv-ice will be held Sunday evening, whenreports will be given.

After graduating from the Universityof Michigan, Mr. Knapp devoted twoyears to general Sunday school work,during which time he attended theWorld's Sunday school convention inthe city of Jerusalem. He then tookfour years' theological seminary workin seminaries in Hartford, New Yorkand Chicago. While in Hartford hewas paid superintendent of the FourthChurch Sunday school, which "becamethe largest in the state of Connecticut.

While in Union Seminary he was thedirector of BNble study for the Broad-way Tabernacle Sunday school. Helater became the paid superintendent oftwo large Sunday schools in Chicago,which met at the same hour, but wereten miles apart. He also lectured onSunday school administration' in theChicago Theological Seminary. first of a' series of four lectures on theinteresting topic, "Taking Men Alive."The lectures are being given by GeorgeB. Pratt, who gave the same talks be-fore the Y. M. C. A. of Tacoma notlong ago.

Young people who believe in "con-versational evangelism" cannot affordto neglect this splendid opportunity ofpreparation for what Henry ClayTrumbull, of the Sunday School Times,called "the greatest, because it is thehardest work In the world."'
