One: Wonderful God, Creator, the whole earth declares your greatness.

All: Your glory glows throughout the cosmos. It is babbled by babies and sung by children.

Page 3: of Giddings Lovejoy Saturday, February 2018 Meeting Binder … · November 4 meeting. Words of Thank you to the hosts at Webster Groves Report of the Transitional Leader Craig Howard

One: You are safe from all your enemies: those who oppose you are silenced.

All: When I look at the sky which you have made, the moon and the stars that you set in place:

One: Where do human beings fit in the pattern? What are we that you care for us?

All: You have made us only a little lower than yourself; and crowned us with glory and honor.

One: You share with us responsibility to care for sheep and cattle, wild things, birds and fish, and everything that lives in the sea: to work with you, within creation.

All: Wonderful God, Creator, the whole Earth declares your greatness. (Psalm 8)

One: Our faith urges us to defend and heal creation while working to assure justice for all of creation and the human beings who live in it. Rooted in the human vocation of “tilling and keeping” the garden from Genesis 2:15, churches are challenged to live in a manner consistent with God’s call to not only care for creation but commune with creation.

We recognize today that the Florissant Presbyterian Church of Florissant and the LoveJoy Presbyterian Church of Wood River, MO have become Certified Earth Care Congregations by the Presbyterian Church (USA). May they continue to care for God’s good earth through the life and work of their congregations and their outreach to the surrounding community.

May God give them and all the congregations of this presbytery the strength, persistence and imagination necessary to care for God’s creation.

In the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.

Omnibus Motion – February 24, 2018 The Omnibus Motion helps to manage presbytery’s decision-making in a concise manner. It includes significant motions from committees and reports actions taken on behalf of the presbytery by committees. Consideration of the omnibus motion is a decisive moment when members and commissioners act to adopt all the items in a single vote, or ask that an item be withdrawn for full consideration and action. This process places in the hands of presbyters the responsibility for the content and length of its discernment and decision-making. When the omnibus motion comes before presbytery for action the Moderator will provide an opportunity to ask a question or seek clarification; this is not a time for debate. Following the period of questions, any presbyter has the right to request that an item be taken out of the omnibus motion for fuller consideration. Such a request requires no second and without discussion the item will be removed from the omnibus motion. Any items not removed from the omnibus motion will be put to a single vote for approval. Any item removed will be considered during Other Business. Keynote SpeakerRev. Karl Travis

Not long into his first pastorate the Rev. Karl Travis realized that issues of faith and finance were central to his parishioners’ discipleship, and that he was largely unprepared to help. Thus began an immersion in studying, praying, and preaching about Christian generosity. Years later Karl is ever more convinced that stewardship is at once our chief spiritual challenge and opportunity. Active in stewardship issues at every level of the church, he brings a special passion to personal and congregational financial generosity. The Rev. Karl Travis is senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth, Texas. He is a graduate of Trinity University and the University of Edinburgh, and is the recipient of a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Austin

Plenaries: Generosity as the Antidote to Society’s Problems

Session I - What’s your stewardship pitch? Too often, congregations lead with the church’s financial needs – staff salaries, utility bills, building maintenance, etc. The spiritual benefits of individual generosity get washed away in institutional anxiety and the inertia of yesteryear’s stewardship campaigns. What if we began our

stewardship conversations not with the church’s need to receive, but with the individual’s need to give? And what difference would it make if we discovered that our generosity is rooted in God’s generosity?

The guiding thought of this session: Is God generous, and if so, so what?

Session 2 - Each autumn, when we roll out the year’s stewardship campaign, is there a way to open the conversation to God? If our stewardship conversations are about more than meeting the church’s budget, how can we think about generosity that deepens discipleship and enlivens a broader spiritual life? Created in God’s image, fashioned by God to be kind and compassionate, creative and generous, how do we move towards God’s example of self-giving love and conspicuous open-handedness?

The guiding thought of this session: If our discipleship includes changing the world, how does our generosity contribute?

Session 3 - God is generous. We aspire to be. Our generosity empowers us to be creatively counter-cultural. It inoculates us from the chief idols of the age: consumerism, materialism, and acquisition. In a hectic world in which busy people seek rhythm and ritual to ground our faith, consistent generosity leads us into a deeper relationship with God, our families, and ourselves. The bottom line: generosity pays liberating spiritual dividends. Finally, in Session 3 – but not before – we can begin to talk about why giving to the church matters.

The guiding thought of this session: Congregations which care most about their members’ spiritual health will have more money to engage their mission.

...And there will be THREE informative workshop blocks of which you may choose from the FOURTEEN following options:
