From the ISS, astronauts take millions of photos of the Earth below. Bringing scientific results back to Earth is an important role for the ISS. From December 1998 to March 2019 78,514 kg of research resources were brought to the station, and 23,559 kg were returned to Earth. In 24 hours, the space station makes 16 orbits of Earth, traveling through 16 sunrises and sunsets. The ISS travels at a speed of 5 miles per second or 17,500 mph. The ISS is approximately 260 miles above the surface of the Earth, just a bit farther than the distance between Washington, D.C. and New York City. It can take as few as 6 hours for a spacecraft to arrive to the station from Earth. 240 individuals from 19 countries have visited the International Space Station. An international crew of six live and work aboard the ISS. Between December 1998 and March 2019, over 4,200 investigators representing more than 100 countries and counting carried out almost 3,000 completed and ongoing investigations. The ISS is the only place we can conduct long-duration research on how living in microgravity affects the human body. 1000s of researchers on the ground from more than 100 countries and counting have conducted almost 3,000 experiments in microgravity. To mitigate the loss of muscle and bone mass in microgravity, astronauts exercise at least 2 hours per day and follow a careful diet. Microgravity turns everything we know upside down. Fluids behave differently. Fires burn in new ways. New insights into systems are revealed, creating new understandings. We continue to study changes in vision, cognition, fine motor skills and other physiological systems to develop ways to keep astronauts safe in space and help people back on Earth. Research on the station, from growing plants in space to understanding how cement behaves in microgravity, has benefits for our future exploration of deep space as well as benefits back on our home planet. The space station offers a great vantage point from which we can study the Earth, allows scientists to expose materials to the harsh environment of space and lets us test technologies that could help take us farther into deep space, including to the Moon and Mars. Christina Koch and Jessica Meir conducted the first all-woman spacewalk in October 2019. Astronauts have conducted more than 227 spacewalks (and counting!) since 1998, of which 173 were in U.S. spacesuits and 54 were in Russian spacesuits.
