PRESIDENT’S CORNER
The curtain call for Rotary Year 2014-2015 is definitely just around the corner. And
what better way to make a fitting climax to an exciting year than to award deserving
personalities and clubs for their exemplary performance in making the Rotary year
one for the books. Hence, this coming Saturday, May 23, 2015, the Rotary
International District 3810 Awards Night 2015 will be held at the Fiesta Pavilion of
the historic Manila Hotel. This is hosted by the Rotary Club of Paco Manila. Time
check for this event is 5:30 pm. Unlike all other annual awards held in the district in
recent years, the district will recognize Rotarians who have given their time, talent
and treasure to the district during the Rotary year that was as well as the respective
Rotary clubs to which they belong to be billed as the “Rotary Service Award”. On
this note, I encourage our fellow Manila Rotarians to attend this awards night in a
Gatsby-inspired costume where tickets are at Php 1,800.00 per person.
On news within our club, our Valedictory Fellowship for Rotary Year 2014-2015 is in the works under the leadership of
IPSDG/PP Cesar Ubaldo as Chairman of the Fellowship Committee and Rtn. Hermie Esguerra as Co-Chairman. And what way
to end an exciting year than to hold it at the home of the World Famous Chorale right at the Central Colleges of the Philippines of
PP Babes Reyes, Chairman of the World Famous Chorale, on Friday, May 29, 2015. It will be held specifically at the Central
Colleges of the Philippines Studio Theatre along 52 Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City, near UERMMMC and SM Centerpoint. As
such, this early, mark this red letter date, a Friday, on your appointment book as it will surely be a night of fun, friendship,
fellowship and camaraderie complete with great entertainment singers where singing and dancing will be non-stop, not to
mention the sumptuous buffet and bottomless drinks waiting for one and all FREE OF CHARGE. Your voluntary donation of
your favorite wine will be highly appreciated. This early, i already wish to convey my sincere thanks and profound gratitude to
my fellow Manila Rotarians who have fully supported me through their active involvement in the various club service groups this
Rotary year.
On news around the district, I joined my Best Class Presidents last May 18, 2015 at the Past Presidents Council’s “A
First Class Spring Blossom Presentation” hosted by the First Class Presidents as we were officially welcomed at a dinner
reception held at the Midas Tent of the Midas Hotel. Earlier that day, DGE/PP Obet Pagdanganan, ICOS/AG/IPP Rudy
Bediones and I were in meeting with our fellow Manila Rotarian Rickie Yap who is the Executive Vice President of the Manila
Hotel for preparations regarding the District Conference under the governorship of DGE/PP Obet Pagdanganan which will be
held sometime in April 2016 at the historic Manila Hotel.
Today’s Rotary Club of Manila Luncheon Meeting is a first of its kind for Rotary Year 2014-2015 as we will all be treated
to a FREE LUNCH through the courtesy and generosity of The Standard – Defining The News which was made possible through
our energetic Program Co-Chairman Rtn. Babe Romualdez. This luncheon meeting will serve as a Public Forum on Territorial
Issues of the West Philippine Seas where there will be a panel of pro’s and con’s on the issue and who will likewise serve as our
guests of honor and speakers. A pro-active open forum will definitely follow right after their respective presentations so don’t
miss this one of a kind luncheon as I urge each and every Manila Rotarian to actively participate in the activities of our club on
this final leg of our Rotary year.

Dr. Mariano B. Lopez is the 51st President of the Philippine College of Physicians. He will begin his presidency on 01 June 2015 to 31 May 2016. The Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) is the umbrella organization of internal medicine specialists in the Philippines and was organized 61 years ago, in 1953. It has 22 regional chapters, 8 NCR chapters and 18 component and affiliate subspecialty societies. It has approximately 9,400 members belonging to internal medicine and the different subspecialties. The PCP Annual Convention is the largest medical convention being held in the country each year. The PCP is an affiliate society of the Philippine Medical Association and a member-society of the International Society of Internal Medicine (ISIM) and the ASEAN Federation of Internal Medicine (AFIM). Its vision is to be a world-class organization of physicians that sets the highest standards and ethical ideals in the practice of Internal Medicine and provides dynamic leadership in the promotion of health and quality of life in the management of disease in the formulation of relevant health policies. PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE
LONG LIFE, Part 2 (It’s more than just healthy foods and exercise)
Elias D. Adamos, M.D.
I would like to continue quoting from the book “Outliers” The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. Here’s the continuation to last week’s article: “The Rosetans began buying land on a rock hillside connected to Bangor by a steep, rutted wagon path. They built closely clustered two-story stone houses with slate roofs on narrow streets running up and down the hillside. They built a church and called it Our Lady of Mount Carmel and named the main street, on which it stood, Garibaldi Avenue, after the great hero of Italian unification. In the beginning, they called their town New Italy. But they soon changed it to Roseto, which seemed only appropriate given that almost all of them had come from the same village in Italy. In 1896, a dynamic young priest by the name of Father Pasquale de Nisco took over at Our Lad of Mount Carmel. De Nisco set up spiritual societies and organized festivals. He encouraged the townsfolk to clear the land and plant onions, beans, potatoes, melons, and fruit trees in the long backyards behind their houses. He gave out seeds and bulbs. The town came to life. The Rosetans began raising pigs in their backyards and growing grapes for homemade wine. Schools, a park, a convent, and a cemetery were built. Small shops and bakeries and restaurants and bars opened along Garibaldi Avenue. More than a dozen factories sprang up making blouses for the garment trade. Neighboring Bangor was largely Welsh and English, and the next town over was overwhelmingly German, which meant – given the fractious relationships the English and Germans and Italians in those years – that Roseto stayed strictly for Rosetans. If you had wandered up and down the streets of Roseto in Pennsylvania in the first few decades after 1900, you would have heard only Italian, and not just any Italian but the precise Foggian southern dialect spoken back in the Italian Roseto. Roseto, Pennsylvania, was its own tiny, self-sufficient world – all but unknown by the society around it – and it might well have remained so but for a man named Stewart Wolf. Wolf was a physician. He studied digestion and the stomach and taught in the medical school at the University of Oklahoma. He spent the summers on a farm in Pennsylvania, not far from Roseto – although that, of course, didn’t mean much, since Roseto was so much in its own world that it was possible to live in the next town snd never know much about it. “One of the times when we were out there for the summer – this would have been in the late nineteen fifties – I was invited to give a talk at the local medical society.” Wolf said years later in an interview, “After the talk was over, one of the local doctors invited me to have a beer. And while we were having a drink, he said, ‘You know, I’ve been practicing for seventeen years. I got patients from all over, and I rarely find anyone from Roseto under the age of sixty-five with heart disease.’ “ In Gladwell’s words, “Wolf was taken aback.” (To be continued)
