a scholarship to become a Christian Minister. In 1975 he went to India tostudy Islam and became the first student from the Caribbean and NorthAmerica to have enrolled in Darul Uloom Deoband, which is the largestand oldest Islamic Institute in India. In addition to graduating as a Qaariand Islamic Scholar, he also did a course in Journalism and established theAl Hikmat Muslim Magazine. He has also produced many television andradio programs in Trinidad and Florida USA. In 1983 he founded theNational Muslim Sports League of Trinidad and Tobago, which estab-lished the Islamic Home for Children. He is the Founder/Principal ofDarul Uloom Institute in Pembroke Pines and the first Muslim to becomePresident of the Interfaith Council of South Florida in the year 2002. Heis the pioneer of many Christian / Muslim / Jewish Dialogues in Churches,Synagogues and Islamic Centers in the U.S.A. Shaikh Shafayat was thefirst Muslim to represent Islam at a Florida State Faith Summit, held atthe Capitol Building with Gov. Jeb Bush in the year 2000.He is a recipi-ent of the Silver Medallion Award from NCCJ (a national interfaith orga-nization) and a recipient of the Peacemaker Award from St. Thomas Uni-versity in Miami. For many years he has been lecturing on Islam andterrorism to college and university students plus to Pembroke Pines Po-lice of South Florida and other Law Enforcement Officers. He lecturesthroughout the U.S.A. and worldwide on Interfaith Issues and CulturalDiversity.

In the93rd chap-ter of theH o l yQ u r ’ a n ,

Surah Dhuhaa, Allaah (SWT)reminds us of the importanceof being positive. It is aSurah of motivation to upliftour spirit and Iman, and con-sole us when we suffer hard-ships, a reminder thatAllaah’s (SWT) mercy willlighten every suffering, eitherin this world or in the life tocome. When things mightlook bad to us, know thatAllaah (SWT) has a betterplan. There was a time in theProphet’s (SAW) life inMecca when revelationsseemed to have stopped. The

disbelievers were mocking himwith taunts of “Where’s yourGod ? “ and “Where’s yourJibraeel?” Chapter 93 (TheBright Morning Hours) was re-vealed at this time of frustra-tion and persecution. It is likea direct message of encourage-ment to the Prophet (SAW)and therefore an indirect mes-sage of encouragement to allof us. In verses 1 – 4, Allaah(SWT) consoles us: “Considerthe bright morning hours, andthe night when it grows still anddark. Thy Lord has not for-saken thee, nor is He dis-pleased. And indeed the here-after will be better for thee thanthe present.” Yes, we havetroubles, some darkness in ourlives, but the light will come!

Don’t think that Allaah(SWT) has ignored you anddoesn’t answer our du’a.There is a hadith about mak-ing du’a: Don’t ask Allaah(SWT) in a negative way orwith hesitation. Don’t ask,“Would You find me a wife?”Say “Allah, grant me a pi-ous wife!” Be positive thatAllaah (SWT) is all-power-ful in His blessings. Be posi-tive that Allaah (SWT) seesus and knows us. Even ifthings seem difficult rightnow, count your blessingsthat at least you can prayyour salaah, make du’a, anddo good deeds for yourhereafter. The Hereafter isbetter than this dunya. Thisis just a trial, a test, so wecan be better, do more good,and be more charitable. In93:5, Allaah (SWT) prom-ises, “Very soon you willhave everything and you willbe well-pleased.” So don’tlet these hurdles keep usback! Be prepared for tri-als. If we don’t experienceany problems, then maybesomething is wrong with ourIman. Allaah tests those Heloves. In 93:6-8, Allaah(SWT) asks, “Did He notfind thee an orphan and givethee shelter? And found theelost and guided thee? Andfound thee in want, and madethee independent?” The or-phaned Prophet (SAW) wentfrom his uncle’s home of noIman to Khadijah’s wealth,and success, andprophethood. We can bepositive that Allaah will pro-vide for us, too.Continued on Page 33,

right hand.” (Q. 29 :48) There are traditions narrated about themanner in which the Qur‘an used to be compiled: “Differentsuras used to be revealed on the Prophet (peace be upon him),and when something was revealed on him he used to send forsome of his stenos and dictate to write a particular verse in aparticular surah in the context of particular verses. “The Prophet(peace be upon him) says, “The Gabriel came and asked toplace this verse in this place of this surah”. The Holy Prophet(peace be upon him) had appointed 42 stenos for the purposeof giving dictation of the Qur‘an. “The whole of the Qurànwas in the written form in the Prophet`s period but was notbound in a single volume.” During the days of the Prophet(peace be upon him) all the surahs had been separately com-piled. The first Caliph Abu Bakar (R A) simply made all thesurahs together and got bound in one volume.(Suyuti:Itqan.v.I,p.83) The People were at liberty to read the Qur‘anaccording to their own dialects but they started writing italso in their dialects.

Recently we witnessed the exoneration ofGeorge Zimmerman from the trial in whichhe was accused of murdering TrayvonMartin in Sanford, Florida. The foundationof his defense was that he felt threatenedby Martin. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground”law makes it acceptable to use deadly forceto protect oneself if one feels threatened,

and one may choose to use that deadly force in public even iftheir might be another way to avoid the conflict. Some feelthat his exoneration was a travesty of justice and that the ju-rors allowed Zimmerman to get away with murder. The flaw,however, may not have been ultimately because the prosecu-tion failed in presenting its case. Nor may it have been becauseof poor judgment of the jurors. And while race was most likelya factor, that, too, may not have been the determining cause.Underlying the decision of the jurors was the law itself.Zimmerman may have committed an act that was legal accord-ing to Florida law, and the travesty may have indeed been notthe actions per se but the law itself. Zimmerman had no obli-gation to flee. He had no obligation to back down. I myselfbelieve that the very law that allowed Zimmerman to take theseactions legally is itself immoral. In the Jewish religion we havea legal system known as halakhah, a system of law based onthe foundations of the Torah. Hassan Basri (RA) relates that once he hap-pened to be in the Grand Mosque of Basra(Iraq) and saw a gathering of some of thecompanions of the Holy Prophet (SAW).

They were discussing the piety and other characteristics ofAbu Bakr (RA) and Umar (RA). One of the companions, AhnafBin Qais Tamimi (RA) stated that Umar (RA) sent us to Iraqwith a delegation. Allaah (SWT) Blessed us with various victo-ries in Iraq and Persia. We got a hold of some fine white cloth-ing from Persia and starting wearing them. After a successfulmission, we went back to Madina and paid a visit to KhalifaUmar (RA). He looked at us, then turned his face away and didnot speak with us. The other companions of the Holy Prophet(SAW) with us were very astounded by this behavior. We thenpaid a visit to his son Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) and told himabout this hurtful incident. Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) advisedthem that Ameer ul Mo’mineen Umar (RA) was upset withthem because they wore such clothing that was never worn bythe Holy Prophet (SAW) and Abu Bakr (RA). He does not liketo deviate from the followings of these two extraordinary per-sonalities. As soon we heard this, we went back to our homes,took the fine Persian clothing off and wore the simple dailyclothing we were used to. We went back to visit with SayyadnaUmar (RA).

There is a saying by the Rasul (ProphetMuhammad s.a.w.) that our parents are ei-ther our heaven or hell. What this Islamicquotation simply means is that the way wetreat or regard our parents will dictatewhether we’ll be guaranteed entry to heaven or to be tossedinto the bottomless pit (hell).Now Muslims must remember that respect for parents shouldnot be limited to any age. We must not feel that we are tooyoung or old to honour them, for they’re the ones who bear usand face the full brunt of our upbringing which they regard asa labour of love.To truly understand the position of parents in Islam, the fol-lowing points must be borne in mind:•obey them even if they are non-Muslims•attend to them when they are sick•meet their needs even when they become old•avoid abusing them physically and verbally•forgive them when they do wrong•bury them as early as possible upon their death according toIslamic rites•say prayers for them while they’re alive and when they havedeparted from this world•avoid hurting their feelings•duty to parents is preferred to Nafl prayers•service to parents is superior to Jihad•when we’re kind to our parents, our children will reciprocatethe same to us Continued on Page 34, Inshaa Allaah

Please understand thatexcluding others who are yourbrothers and sisters in Islam isnot only wrong, it’sUNISLAMIC too. You are sittingin a Masjid, it is your responsi-bility to reach out to others evenif they are shy and do not ap-proach you first. Islam is aboutembracing all races and cultures.We are all one in the eyes of Al-lah and in the eyes of Islam.Please then do not allow your-self to be guided by the “mis-guided” who believe in cliquesand groupings- they are not act-ing in the true spirit of Islam andthey are certainly not doingDAWAH a favor by excludingcertain people and embracingsome selected ones. I am a Pa-kistani and now make a con-scious effort to talk to just abouteveryone in masjid…people fromany country, any nationality andpeople of any color. As long asthey are Muslims, their national-ity doesn’t matter. I do it nowsimply because not doing thiswould be against the core mes-sage of Islam. Didn’t the Quransay, “And hold fast, all together,by the rope which Allah(stretches out for you), and benot divided among yourselves;”[Al Qur’an 3:103]

Next day, my father packed me, Yousufand my mom into a car full of other strangers. At the borderwe joined one of the many caravans that were being smuggledacross the border. The Eid is coming, and yes to be followedby my wedding.

As I sit to reflect and againhave the privilege to submitanother article to Al-Hikmat,I am keenly aware that myMuslim brothers and sistersare now nearing the end ofRamadan, and when this ar-ticle appears, many devoutMuslims will be involved inthat most sacred annual pil-grimage to Mecca—TheHajj. PILGRIMAGE, what afabulous experience for de-vout believers. Our Jewishbrothers and sisters celebratethree sacred pilgrimagefeasts each year: Passover,Shavuot and Sukkot. As pro-fessor of World Religion, Ifind it intriguing that eachmajor religion has integrated

this concept and practice of Sa-cred Pilgrimage within thepractice of the faithful. As aChristian, and priest within theEpiscopal Church, I am keenlyaware of our own long historyof pilgrimage. As the earlyChristian Church began to dis-tinguish itself from specificJewish traditions, they too in-stituted the practice of pilgrim-age. As the Church grew, andexpanded its geographicalboundaries, there developed thecustom of returning to the HolyLand and walking the WAY oftheir founder-Jesus the Christ.This later became known asThe Way of the Cross.

I find it interesting that aunique art form which onefinds in most Mainline Chris-tian Churches was developedand usually lines the sides ofmany such churches. We re-fer to this as The Stations ofthe Cross. When I was little,every Friday in my church,people had the opportunity tocome and participate in TheStations of the Cross. Therewould actually be a proces-sion (Pilgrimage) through thechurch, with the Priest lead-ing, along with altar serversand the faithful behind. Wewould stop at each Stationof the Cross (There are 14)and recall the founder’s Wayof the Cross. There wouldbe time for prayer and re-flection at each station, andthen we would move on tothe next. Some Christianhomes even have a replica-tion of the Stations of theCross positioned in a SacredSpace, and families will joinin prayer to remember theFounder’s own Pilgrimagethat is commemorated onGood Friday of Holy Week.There is something wonder-ful about the concept of pil-grimage. I wonder if per-haps it is because we are allPilgrims here on earth. Letus truly remember our roots,that no matter where our pil-grimage may have led us to-day, we have all come fromthe One True God and eachof us continues our Journeyhere on earth. May we re-spect and love each other asPilgrims along the way.

We bonded and rebonded with eachother during Iftar and dinner. Weworked together as a team despitedifferences of race, nationality,color, language, status or position.Many masajids had Iftar and dinnerdaily and this was the focus eachday, to cooperate with each other,to help share a plate, prepare a meal,offer a drink, and clean up after din-ner. Not everyone was able tophysically help out, but everyone’sgood will and humble intention todo good was apparent. There werefrequent times when frustration setin, or we may have gotten into littlesquabbles, because it is not easy tobe with 300- 400 people every dayand avoid “knocking of heads”.Despite that, our effort and empha-sis to humble ourselves and to carryout the day with an elevated senseof calm, patience and the objectiveto abstain from sinful acts and ex-hibit our best behavior and mannersto our friends, family, co-workers

and the people we came into con-tact with; was our main focus andintention. We tried our best not toengage in backbiting, slandering,negativity, getting upset, we movedour focus away from TV and elec-tronic habits and used that time toengage in the worship of Allah(SWT). How merciful is Allah(SWT) to give us this opportunityto try to reduce/remove our sins bystaying away from all these worldlyand sinful actions and deeds. Helocked the devils away to help usprove to ourselves that we have thewillpower to do it. Allah (SWT) hasdesigned Ramadan for this purpose,to elevate us to a higher spiritual level,to refocus on all the good charac-teristics that are innately inherent inus, to make the right choices, to becharitable to each other, to help thosewho are less fortunate, to rekindleour ties with each other, to let gooff grudges, envy, jealousy and tostrive for unity, brotherhood and sis-terhood. When we list all the intan-gible, immaterial negative deeds thatwe get caught up in and misuse ourenergies over, it seems so petty andmeaningless.

To avoid confusion the thirdCaliph ‘Uthman (R A) pre-pared numerous copies of thegovernment copy of theQuràn prepared by Abu Bakarand sent those to all the prov-inces. He forbade the peopleto write the Quràn in the dia-lects other than that of theQureish. (Salih al-Jazairi:Tibyan fi Mabahith al-Quràn,p.44) None of the other DivineBooks was written in the lifetime of the prophet to whomit was revealed. The Old Tes-tament and the New Testamentwere compiled much after thetime of Moses and the Christ.This fact is clearly mentionedin the Bible itself. “So Moses,according to the will of the‘lord’ breathed his last inMua`b and was buried there;but no one knows his grave.(The Old Testament, p.201)This means that the Old Tes-tament was compiled at thetime when even the grave ofMoses had disappeared. Thisis written in the Old Testamentitself. Similarly the New Tes-tament was written by the suc-cessors of the companions ofthe Christ. This fact is againwritten in the New Testamentitself: “As many have takenupon themselves to recordwhat has been transmitted tous by the companions, I havealso considered it proper to en-quire, scrutinize and write inarranged form.”(The NewTestament,p.51) The Vedasare claimed to be the oldest Di-vine books.

In Jewish law, a person doesnot have free reign to take anypossible action to protect one-self. In Judaism one must fol-low the least violent option toprotect yourself. In manyAmerican states there is a lawcalled “Your Home is YourCastle.” In those states it islegal to use deadly forceagainst an intruder in yourhome even if you are relativelysure that person does NOThave a gun. Jewish law doesnot make the same provision.In Jewish law, even if some-one breaks into your home, ifyou can slip out the back doorand run away you MUST takethat option. If you CAN es-cape and you don’t and insteadkill the intruder, you are guiltyof murder even if it happensin your own home. Judaismdoes allow deadly force ifthat’s the only way you canprotect yourself or another in-nocent person from someonewho wants to commit a crime.Whether you are inside or out-side, if the only way you canprotect yourself or an inno-cent person is by killing theperson trying to commit thecrime, then it is not only ac-ceptable but obligatory to usethe force necessary to protectthe innocent person, even ifthat means killing the criminal.But if there is ANY OTHERWAY to protect yourself or aninnocent person without kill-ing the criminal then youMUST take that other option.George Zimmerman did notneed to confront TrayvonMartin. The police advised himto back off and let themhandle it. If Zimmerman hadcome before a Jewish courthe would have been foundguilty, because he would havehad plenty of opportunities toavoid confrontation.

In the camp, there is no wa-ter, no sanitation, and no elec-tricity. My friend Um Ahmeddied in September. My mom,Yousuf and I, with many othergirls, were taken to a house inthe city, far from our camp.We knew that something waswrong. Men came out of thathouse and took selected girlswith them. We were horrified,and somehow managed to es-cape. I believe that presenceof an infant was not attractiveto them. Yousuf saved us. Af-ter this incident, my mom de-cided to get me married ASAP.It was for my own protection.What have we done to deservethis? Oh Allah, where are you?Oh Allah, please help us.Please help us. Don’tlook at the darkness of thenight – focus on the bright-ness of the morning! We arepromised success! Take cour-age from Allah’s words and re-member the hadith about posi-tive thinking: How we thinkof Allah is how Allah will blessus. If we think positivelyabout Allah and His power andmercy and control, then Allahwill deal with us in that way.Allah knows our problems andunderstands us better than weunderstand ourselves. A person must be healthy and physically fit. If oneis disabled by old age or a disease that is incurable or is un-able to perform Hajj for some other similar reason, he may, ifhe is financially capable, assign someone else to perform Hajjon his behalf and at his expense. One must possess the nec-essary provision and also the requisite means of journey. Nec-essary provision here means that the intending pilgrim musthave sufficient supplies for himself as well as for his familythat he leaves behind. These supplies include sufficient andadequate clothing, housing, means of traveling. Means of trav-eling imply that which enables him to go to Hajj and comeback, whether it is by land, by sea, or by air.Qur’aan Ch. 3 Vs. 97:Allah says in the Qur’aan: “Pilgrimagethereto is a duty men owe to Allah - thosewho can afford the journey.”NOTE: Children who have the ability should do the Hajj forparents, who do not have the health or wealth to perform theHajj-or for parents who have passed away.HADITH: Hazrat Ibn ‘Abbas narrates that a woman fromthe tribe of Johainah came to the Prophet (peace be uponhim) and said: “My mother had vowed to perform Hajj butshe died before fulfilling her vow, should I perform Hajj onher behalf? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Yes,perform Hajj on her behalf. Would you not pay off any debtsyour mother might have left behind upon her death? Pay offwhat you owe to Allah, for He is most deserving of settle-ment of His debt.” (Bukhaari)

Islam has a principle similar toJudaism. Certainly I am noexpert on the details of Islamiclaw. But I do know that theQuran affirms that God is op-posed to those who commitaggression and use excessiveforce. It also, of course, al-lows self-defense, but doesnot allow a use of dispropor-tionate violence. And it evenaffirms that God will pay spe-cial attention to the personwho exercises restraint andpatience in response to expe-riencing a wrong. I cannotexplain all of the details ofMuslim law, and I have noability to determine what thosewho understand Muslim lawwould say in regards to theTrayvon Martin case. What Ido know is that Judaism andIslam both teach restraint inresponse to violence and to becautious in implementing vio-lence even when such violenceis understandable. The tragedyof the death of Trayvon Mar-tin was absolutely an injusticein our society. But the great-est injustice was perpetratedby the law itself that permit-ted such a killing to be legal.May we all learn from thishorrible lesson and work tobringing peace within all of ourcommunities, by establishinga true justice of all of our citi-zens and cooperation to eradi-cate the poison of hatred thatstill remains within us. Andinstead, let us bring the lightof peace which is the true lightof God to all people.
