Celebrating Alleluia! This time last year we were all quarantined in our homes. The only way we were able to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection was virtually on TV or the internet. We have many reasons to celebrate with alleluias this year.
The Collect for Easter Sunday Mass sums it up well. “O God, who on this day through your Only Begotten Son, have conquered death and unlocked for us the path to eternity, grant, we pray, that we who keep the solemnity of the Lord’s Resurrection may, through the renewal brought by your Spirit, rise up in the light of life.” Jesus has conquered death, alleluia! He has unlocked the path to eternity for us, alleluia! We can rise up in the light of life, alleluia!
St. Luke tells us in the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, referring to Jesus, “that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.” St. Paul reminds the Corinthians in our Second Reading, “When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.” Alleluia, this is more good news for us!
The Apostles were not rejoicing early that first Easter morning. They were grief stricken. They didn’t know what to do. Mary of Magdalene got up early that morning, probably because she hadn’t been able to sleep. She needed to properly anoint Christ’s body as they couldn’t do it on Friday when he died due to the Sabbath. She saw that the stone in front of his burial tomb was rolled away. (She didn’t know how she was going to move it anyway.) She ran to get Peter and John. They didn’t know what had happened. The Gospel tells us that John saw and believed. Slowly they started to remember the things Jesus had been telling them to prepare them for this.
We have the benefit of over 2,000 years of believers sharing their faith with us about the Resurrection. We should still be shouting “Alleluia he is risen, he has truly risen indeed, alleluia!” Do we take this most wonderful gift for granted? Do we really appreciate what Jesus has done for us? We are Easter people. Let us act as Easter people. The Easter season lasts for 50 days. Let us recognize and be grateful for all the alleluia moments (and people) in our lives and celebrate our alleluias instead of grumbling about what we don’t have or can’t do.

ALÉGRENSE Y REGOCÍJENSE Durante los primeros tres o cuatro siglos del cristianismo, si se le preguntaba a un cristiano el nombre de las fiestas de la Iglesia, su respuesta habría sido una mirada de sorpresa porque había una sola fiesta: la Resurrección del Señor. Cada domingo era una celebración de la gran fiesta. A pesar de que nuestro calendario tiene ahora muchas fiestas hermosas y santas, continuamente debemos ser llamados de nuevo al hecho de que todas estas fiestas existen a causa de la fiesta del paso (Pascua) de Cristo de la muerte a la vida. El Salmo de hoy proclama este mensaje así: “Este es el día”. No es uno de muchos días, pero es el día de todos los días, el que da a todos los demás su origen, propósito, significado y destino. Escuchen con atención el discurso de Pedro en Hechos recordando la Pasión, las palabras del apóstol Pablo y al recuento que hacen María Magdalena, Juan y Pedro al encontrar la tumba vacía, y oirán las obras maravillosas que Dios ha hecho para nosotros en Cristo. ¡Alégrense y regocíjense! REJOICE AND BE GLAD During the first three or four centuries of Christianity, if you asked a Christian to name the feast days of the church, your answer would have been a puzzled stare, for there was only one feast: the Resurrection of the Lord. Every Sunday was a feast celebrating the one great feast. Even though our calendar now has many beautiful and holy feasts, we must continually be called back to the fact that all these other feasts exist because of the feast of Christ’s passover from death to life. The psalm today proclaims this message well: “This is the day.” It is not one of many days, but it is the day of all days, the one that gives all the others their origin, purpose, meaning, and destiny. Listen carefully to Peter’s speech in Acts with its recollection of the Passion, to the words of the apostle Paul, and to the account of Mary Magdalene, John, and Peter finding the empty tomb, and you will hear the many wonderful works that God has done for us through Christ. ¡Celebrando el Aleluya!
En esta época del año pasado, todos fuimos puestos en cuarentena en nuestros hogares. La única forma en que pudimos celebrar la resurrección del Señor fue virtualmente en la televisión o en Internet. Tenemos muchos motivos para celebrar con aleluyas este año. La colecta para la misa del domingo de Pascua lo resume bien. “Oh Dios, que en este día por tu Hijo Unigénito, has vencido a la muerte y nos has abierto el camino a la eternidad, concédenos, te rogamos, que los que guardamos la solemnidad de la Resurrección del Señor podamos, a través de la renovación traída por tu Espíritu, levántate a la luz de la vida ". Jesús ha vencido a la muerte, ¡aleluya! Nos ha abierto el camino a la eternidad, ¡aleluya! Podemos levantarnos a la luz de la vida, ¡aleluya! St. Lucas nos dice en la Primera Lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, refiriéndose a Jesús, "que todo aquel que crea en él, recibirá el perdón de los pecados por medio de su nombre". San Pablo recuerda a los Corintios en nuestra Segunda Lectura: "Cuando Cristo tu vida aparezca, entonces tú también aparecerás con él en gloria". ¡Aleluya, estas son más buenas noticias para nosotros! Los apóstoles no se regocijaban temprano esa primera mañana de Pascua. Estaban abatidos por el dolor. No sabían qué hacer. María de la Magdalena se levantó temprano esa mañana, probablemente porque no había podido dormir. Necesitaba ungir adecuadamente el cuerpo de Cristo, ya que no podían hacerlo el viernes cuando murió debido al Sabbat. Vio que la piedra frente a su tumba funeraria había sido quitada. (De todos modos, no sabía cómo la iba a mover). Corrió a buscar a Pedro y a Juan. No sabían lo que había sucedido. El evangelio nos dice que Juan vio y creyó. Lentamente empezaron a recordar las cosas que Jesús les había estado diciendo para prepararlos para esto. Tenemos el beneficio de más de 2,000 años de creyentes que comparten su fe con nosotros acerca de la Resurrección. Deberíamos seguir gritando "¡Aleluya ha resucitado, realmente ha resucitado, aleluya!" ¿Damos por sentado este maravilloso regalo? ¿Realmente apreciamos lo que Jesús ha hecho por nosotros? Somos gente de Pascua. Actuemos como pueblo pascual. La temporada de Pascua tiene una duración de 50 días. Reconozcamos y seamos agradecidos por todos los momentos de aleluya (y personas) en nuestras vidas y celebremos nuestros aleluyas en lugar de quejarnos por lo que no tenemos o no podemos hacer.
