Welcome to the illustrious start of Paper Mill Playhouse’s 2017–2018 season, and we begin with a bang—the world premiere of The Honeymooners!

Book writers Dusty Kay and Bill Nuss, composer Stephen Weiner, and lyricist Peter Mills have breathed fresh life into the beloved characters of Ralph and Alice Kramden and Ed and Trixie Norton, true icons from the Golden Age of television—not simply rehashing old teleplays on the stage, but inventing an ingenious storyline in the best American musical comedy tradition. Tony Award–winning director John Rando ramps up the fun with his clever staging, showcasing a stellar cast of comic pros as well as the talents of lauded Broadway designers, a consummate music team, and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Joshua Bergasse’s splashy production numbers. We think you’ll have a blast!

A bit of TV history. The Honeymooners began life in 1951 as a recurring sketch on Jackie Gleason’s live Cavalcade of Stars on the DuMont Network and the following year moved with the host to CBS and the new Jackie Gleason Show. Over the next few seasons the popular skits grew to the length of whole episodes of the variety show, and so in October 1955 The Honeymooners became its own weekly half-hour sitcom. The memorably madcap cast included Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Audrey Meadows, and Joyce Randolph. (Pert Kelton had originated the part of Alice but was a victim of Hollywood blacklisting by 1952; Elaine Stritch was the first to play Trixie, appearing in just one sketch.) The series ran 39 complete episodes through September 1956. The Jackie Gleason Show then returned, and the sketches soon were brought back as part of the revived variety show, continuing sporadically even after its cancellation in 1970 in various incarnations (including hour-long specials and musicalizations) as late as 1978. What a lifespan— and these characters are still as funny as when they debuted sixty-six years ago!

Stay tuned for the rest of our incredible season. Up next, we revive Annie, a favorite for all generations, in a new production directed by Mark S. Hoebee and choreographed by JoAnn M. Hunter (Oliver!, Grease). Winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score, this hallmark of the canon is a celebration of family and the hope for a better tomorrow, and it’s not to be missed.

We are proud to finish off with three more new works, including the East Coast premiere of The Outsider, a riotous—and nonpartisan—satirical send-up of politics and politicians. It is hands-down one of the funniest plays we have come across in years! The world-premiere musical The Sting, based on the classic Oscar-winning best film, is a gritty, suspenseful musical caper to fire up the springtime, written by the Tony-winning creators of Urinetown, directed by John Rando, and choreographed by Tony winner Warren Carlyle (After Midnight, Hello, Dolly! ). Then Half Time receives its East Coast premiere at Paper Mill, directed and choreographed by the incomparable Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, On Your Feet!, The Full Monty). Boasting a powerhouse cast including Georgia Engel, Lillias White, André De Shields, and more stars to be announced, this new musical about not acting your age is based on the true New Jersey story of an unlikely senior citizen dance team that wows the crowd at the basketball halftime show, and it’s full of surprises!

The best way to see these hits is to become a season subscriber. Inquire at the box office, call 973.379.3717, or visit our newly redesigned website at PaperMill.org today.

Finally, please join us in thanking our season sponsor, Investors Bank, as well as the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation for its support of this premiere production. Enjoy The Honeymooners . . . and away we go!

Paper Mill Playhouse received the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award.

PROTECTING THE WILDEST JUNGLES ON THE PLANET.

MAIN STREET. PRESCHOOL. THE PLAYGROUND. The environment isn’t

just some far off place. It’s the lawn under our feet, the food on

our plate, and the air we breathe. To learn more, go to NRDC.org.

And help protect the jungle creatures in your backyard.

Because the environment is everywhere.
