Homebound Ministers Needed

The rich tradition of the celebration of Eucharist has always included prayers for the sick and the homebound. In fact, the original intention for a Tabernacle was to hold the Eucharist that was to be brought to those who cannot be at the main celebration.

Here at the Basilica of Saint Josaphat, we are committed to bringing our Lord in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar to our brothers and sisters who are homebound, hospitalized or in facilities of care.

Monday, February 4 • Start Time and Locations Below Do you have some time to spare? It only takes an hour or two to prepare the meal or to serve the meal provided by the caring and generous parishioners of Saint Josaphat. Come help with one or all of the following:

3:00PM Prepare food for delivery to the meal site and help with kitchen clean-up.

Come and See – The Gospel of Luke

The workbook is titled Come and See: The Gospel of Luke, published by Emmaus Press. It is available from Amazon (and other venues) in paperback and in e-book format. “TODAY THIS PASSAGE IS FULFILLED IN YOUR HEARING” Today’s Gospel marks the beginning of Jesus’ preaching ministry following his forty days in the desert. Filled with the power of the Spirit, Jesus entered the synagogue of his hometown, unrolled the scroll, read from the prophet Isaiah, then declared, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). The people, seeing only the carpenter’s son, demanded, “Prove it!” When he refused, things turned ugly. But, miracle of miracles, when they were about to push him off the cliff, he “passed through the midst of them and went away” (Luke 4:30).

If we try to live our faith, at some point we will be challenged to speak the hard truth and do the hard task, and suffer the uncomfortable consequences. Will God really stand by us in our anguish? Can we muster enough trust to “walk our talk” and not worry too much about the outcome?

“I HAVE MADE YOU A FORTIFIED CITY” Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the few church leaders who stood in opposition to Hitler, was executed by the Nazis for speaking truth to power. His good friend told of his peacefulness and joy while awaiting his death. Like Jesus and Jeremiah, he proclaimed the truth in the face of opposition. Like Jesus and Jeremiah, he died in the process. Like Jesus and Jeremiah, his influence was greater after his death.

So let us dare to live a bit more dangerously, trusting that, like Jeremiah, we will hear God’s assurance and support: “It is I this day / who have made you a fortified city, / a pillar of iron, a wall of brass” (Jeremiah 1:18). Or like the psalmist, perhaps we will find refuge and hope and our mouths will be filled with praise.

Paul reminds us of the only three things that really matter: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is what drove Jesus, Jeremiah, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer to the top of the cliff. If we dare to follow their example, then maybe it won’t make that much difference one way or the other how we get down.

Today’s Gospel is one of tension and contradiction. We enter the scene at the local synagogue. It is near the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry, and he has returned home to Nazareth for a short while. There, in the midst of the men who watched

him grow up and who played with him as a boy in the dusty streets, Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah. The response is understandably mixed. “All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, ‘Isn’t this the son of Joseph?’”

Jesus reminds them – none too gently – of the Israelites’ rejection of the prophets throughout history. Not only did the people ignore Elijah and Elisha, but they worked miracles among the pagans instead. Then comes the rage. “They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.”

No one likes to be reminded of their own faults. In the deeply religious Jewish society, nobody wanted to be the unfaithful one. Jesus exposes the sins of the community, and it drives them not to conversion, but to rage. We can consider our own time. How often, when someone is contracted, do they quickly resort to anger, name-calling, and undermining the reputation of the other? How quickly we want to destroy! This Sunday, we ought to consider our own lives. Do we listen to the prophetic voices around us, even when they threaten to upturn our expectations? If we hear something difficult, something that reminds us of our own sin, do we accept the opportunity to prayerfully ponder? If we allow ourselves to be open to the prophetic voices in our own lives, we’ll notice that God speaks through the unexpected, if we have ears to hear it.

Volunteers Needed Can you spare a couple hours a month and take an older adult to a medical appointment or the grocery store? Interfaith SSR has an immediate need for more volunteer drivers. You always have at least one week’s notice and you can always say no to any request. And if you are helping someone with groceries, you can do it whenever you want! All we ask is that you say yes once or twice a month. All clients live in the southeast area of Milwaukee County and most appointments and grocery stores are in the same area.
