It is difficult to comprehend that we have less than 9 weeks left of school this year and I did read somewhere on Monday that it was only 10 weeks until Christmas Day – where did that go? I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday break and enjoyed some time catching up with family and friends. This is the time for students to take the opportunity to reflect on their last term and set themselves some goals for improvement for this term - they may be goals around learning and grades, goals for improving behaviour and the way they get along with others, goals around organisation and their mindset for learning, OR a combination of both!! Whatever they are, let's make Term 4 a successful, productive and positive one! Our year 12 students are in the throes of completing assignments and preparing for exams and we wish them all the best for the coming weeks, after which they can relax and celebrate the end of their secondary schooling. Staffing We are currently in the process of looking at positions to be advertised for next year – we have advertised an English/HASS position, a Student Wellbeing position and a Community Library position so far. We then look at what contract positions will be required. It is important that we know (as best we can) what our student numbers are. Currently we have been contacted by a few families about their children leaving next year, however, we are aware of rumours about other students. If your child will not be attending Cowell Area School in 2019, please contact either myself, Colleen Peters or the front office to let us know so that we can continue our planning. Kindy Transition We are excited to have next year’s Reception students starting their Transition visits next week with Mrs Curtis and Ms Matthews. The students will be split into two groups and visiting us on either Monday or Wednesday. We look forward to them joining us and hope they enjoy the time they spend in the classroom with our current Receptions. Year 10/11 Careers trip Our Year 10 and 11 students are currently in Adelaide on their Careers camp with Ms Wight and Mr Solly. They will have the opportunity to visit universities and other places of further education, places of employment that cover a variety of career pathways and also enjoy some leisure time at Adelaide venues. So far everything is going well and we look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return. Student Experiences Two of our students – Rhys Turner and Jordan Lewis were involved in some exciting learning experiences during the holidays and I had the opportunity to catch up with them earlier this week to see how they went. Rhys attended the Space Squad programme in Canberra in the October Holidays, where he spent 5 days learning about space, meeting scientists, engineers, physicists, astronomers and Astrophysicists, who are working on NASA missions. FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM When he arrived they went to a place called Bush Capitol Lodge where they were split into 5 groups that had a space theme. Rhys was in the group called Gemini. Each day they went off to do different things but the best experience was attending a lecture on Aerodynamics given by one of the scientists. Rhys learnt about heat resistance and why the space shuttle is called the ‘flying brick’. It impacted on him so much, that he would like to look into a career in construction/ engineering in relation to space craft. He undertook activities like launching rockets and learning how to use Pythagoras’ Theorem to work out the distance travelled and is keen to apply to return to another camp in the future. Jordan Lewis has been following her love of theatre and performance and spent the first week of the holidays in Adelaide rehearsing from 9:00am- 4:00pm for a performance of Fame the Musical JR put on by the YMCA at the Parks Theatre. In the second week of the holidays she had 3 days of performing which she enjoyed tremendously but was also exhausting work. The best part of the whole experience was that she was able to connect with so many other people who share her love of performing. She learnt that you need to be really focussed when performing and that it is a lot harder than it looks – backstage is absolutely hectic! Trying to remember lines, choreography, staging and cues requires a great deal of energy and commitment. Mr Rogers and I were fortunate to be in Adelaide at the time of the performance and attended one of the shows. We enjoyed the production very much, were impressed with the talent of the cast and were impressed with the energy and passion Jordan put into her performance. Jordan has been travelling to and fro from Adelaide auditioning and rehearsing, and will continue to do so into next year, whilst attending a boot camp in January. Well done to both Rhys and Jordan – we are very proud of the way that you have pursued your areas of interest and hope you continue to grow and learn from your experiences. This month’s

Book Club

Offering ....

Amy’s husband Hugh says he isn’t leaving her. He still loves her, he’s just taking a break from their marriage, their children and, most of all, from their life together. Six months to lose himself in south-east Asia. And there is nothing Amy can say or do about it.

Yes, it’s a mid-life crisis, but let’s be clear: a break isn’t a break up – yet . . . However, for Amy it’s enough to send her along with her extended family of gossips, misfits and troublemakers teetering over the edge.

For a lot can happen in six-months. When Hugh returns if he returns, will he be the same man she married? And will Amy be the same woman?

Because if Hugh is on a break from their marriage, then isn’t she?

The Break isn’t a story about falling in love but about staying in love. It is Marian Keyes at her funniest, wisest and brilliant best.

Book club forms have been sent home this week for our last book club for the year. We will not be holding a Book Fair this year so if you need so Christmas ideas then don’t forget to check out this Issue.

Orders can be made online through the Loop App or through the Loop section on Scholastic’s website. Alternatively orders can be dropped off to the library by recess Friday 26th October.

If you’d rather keep your order a SECRET then please let us know and we’ll make sure any gifts are put away for your collection only.
