Meal plans vary based on our students’ dining needs andpreferences. “Meals” or “blocks” include an entrée,side(s) and beverage, and provide students with theflexibility of dining when and where they want. Plans vary in “meals” available per semester along with an assigned amount of flexible spending dollars. Students may use their “meals” over the course of the semester.

Places to Eat

Dining options are available to students throughout campus including in residential and academic buildings. Dining Services offers specialty and global cuisines, pizza and burgers, salads and smoothies, breakfast all-day, sushi and traditional fare along with Orthodox kosher, Halal and vegan and vegetarian options.

Selected eateries around campus serve vegan and vegetarian meals and foods that are free from glutenand the top eight major allergens.

TURNING TARTAN

TAR

TAN

Andrew Carnegie, one of the founders of Carnegie Mellon, was of Scottish origin. Our Scottish heritage is in the fabric of what we do and who we are. Our official school color is Tartan plaid — created at Andrew Carnegie’s request and manufactured in Scotland — which consists of blue, red, green and yellow. The Scottish Terrier is the official Carnegie Mellon mascot and now greets fans and community members at university events, where you may also see our Kiltie Marching Band, who dress in full Scottish regalia for all home football games.

Being a Carnegie Mellon Tartan is about more than our school colors and mascot. When you choose Carnegie Mellon, you’re joining a community that’s rich with tradition and culture.

We Value

Interdisciplinary Knowledge: With our educational philosophy focused on interdisciplinary knowledge, we develop world changers skilled in problem-solving, leadership and communication. Our students leave Carnegie Mellon equipped with the skills to impact society in a transformative way.

Collaboration: Carnegie Mellon is filled with passionate

students just as dedicated and motivated as you are. You’ll be surrounded by like-minded, hardworking students as you collaborate in the studio, on research projects, in the lab or in the classroom.

Diversity: Diversity is our strength, and by bringing together our different backgrounds and experiences, we can solve society’s biggest challenges. A diverse and inclusive community is the foundation for excellence in learning, research, creativity and human development. Throughout our campus there are examples of this commitment though initiatives such as the recent creation of our Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, robust multicultural student organizations, campus advocates and more.

Unleash Your Carnegie Mellon Pride!

Forever Plaid! When you enroll at Carnegie Mellon, you become a lifelong Tartan. You may spend 4+ years in Pittsburgh as a student, but you’ll spend your entire life as a Carnegie Mellon alum. Staying engaged is an expectation — as a student and as an alum — so wear your Tartan swag often, attend Carnegie Mellon events and and be proud of your alma mater!

Spring Carnival

Dating back to 1920, Spring Carnival is one of the oldest and most beloved campus traditions. Each April, students enjoy a fun-filled, four-day weekend — there are no classes the Friday of Carnival weekend. Beyond carnival rides, food and entertainment, the two main components of Carnival are Booth and Buggy.

Booth: Student organizations build one- or two-story carnival booths with a design and game in accordance with the overall Carnival theme. The booths are displayed on the midway where all Carnival-goers can enjoy them.

Buggy: Student organizations participate in a fierce competition of high-tech soapbox racers. Teams compete in a five-person relay race. The drivers (yes, there are actually people in there!) steer the buggies through the free-roll portion of the race. Buggies can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour!

Painting the Fence

Painting the Fence has been a longstanding Carnegie Mellon tradition.

Strict tradition dictates that the Fence can only be painted between midnight and sunrise and must be painted in its entirety. Only paintbrushes can be used to paint the Fence. And, if you don’t want your message to be painted over, the Fence must be guarded around the clock by someone.

The original wooden fence was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most painted object in the world.” In 1993, the original wooden fence collapsed under its own weight and was replaced with the concrete fence standing today. It’s estimated that there are four inches of paint currently on the Fence!

Financial AidFinancial aid is an important part of the admission process. At Carnegie Mellon, aid is awarded solely on the basis of financial need. In order to receive financial aid, you must submit the following documents:

• Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

• College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE

• 2017 federal tax returns and W-2 statements submitted via the Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC)

If your parents are divorced, separated or don’t share the same household, please follow these guidelines:

Your custodial, biological or adoptive parent (the parent with whom you reside most of the time during the 12 months prior to application) must file a FAFSA and CSS Profile.

Your noncustodial parent must complete a separate CSS Profile using their own login credentials.

If you submitted all of the required documents by the February 15 deadline, you should receive your financial aid notification within a few days of your decision letter. If you haven’t yet submitted all of your documents, the Office of Admission won’t be able to give you a finalized financial aid package until we’ve received and reviewed all of the required documentation.
